Print Booklet PDF resolution settings

I have a question in regards to the pdf settings when I go to print a booklet in indesign.
I go to print the booklet, and go into the pdf printer settings dialog box, there is no option to select low, medium, or high resolution or to optimize.
When I print my booklet, even if my resolution on the bitmaps in the indesign document are high, like 300, the print booklet (pdf settings) automatically reduces the quality of the bitmaps.
I have researched and used the help menu and cannot find any way around this or to change these printer settings for pdfs. This is only an issue with the print booklet options.
Any information or inquiries would be greatly appreciated.
Danielle

I'm not sure where you are looking. To set up the PDF printer you need to go beyond the print setup dialog one more level to get to the driver detup (on Mac that's a button called printer setup, I think, and on windows it's a button at the bottom of the dialog called setup). The sequence is Print Booklet > Print Settings (whcih takes you esentially to the standard print dialog where you set page size and orientation, etc) > Setup (or Printer Setup) to pen the PDF Printer options. You need to pick a preset from thje dropdown labeled Default or go into the driver and choose new settings by clicking edit.

  • Weird Error Printing Booklet (PDF)

    Please, can anyone help me?
I've always used the Print Booklet function and it always worked fine.
One day i opened a file that was made on Windows, on the Mac at work and when tried to Print Booklet, it printed on InDesign and then it went to Acrobat PDF Printer... it showed all the process and it said it was done, but no file appeared....
After hours and hours of research on Internet and trying to change settings to see if it finally worked, i got nothing.
Then one time when the printer was printing the file, i paused it. When I did this, the file showed up... incomplete, but it showed up... If I let the printer print until the end, nothing shows up. Weird and bizarre....
Does anyone ever had the same problem??
    Please help!

  • Print booklet: pdf option?

Hi, I'm using Adobe CC InDesign and I'm trying to "print" (save) a booklet but I only have the post script option and I want to save it as pdf to print it later.
    What can I do? Thanks

Unless you use Windows or an older version of OS X, and have an older version of Acrobat Pro that installed the PDF printer (see InDesignSecrets » Blog Archive » Acrobat’s Adobe PDF Printer Replaced in Snow Leopard ) you don't have a print to PDF option available. You'll have to print to Postscript, then distill.

  • Setting compression and resolution in Print Booklet

I'm testing Print Booklet for InDesign CS6 on Windows XP, using Acrobat 8.
I can't find the settings for compression (none) and resolution (288ppi) in the InDesign
    dialogue.
I can set these parameters directly in the parameter list for the 'printer' Adobe PDF,
but these actual settings are not honored. Especially I'm getting always JPEGs instead
    of no compression.
These are the most important windows:
    Sorry for intermediate confusion.

Peter, according to your post #3 one might assume that Print Booklet is
working as expected, if the operator follows some simple rules.
No, it doesn't, but I agree to your statement
Print Booklet to PDF isn't really a recommended workflow
I've updated CS6 for the newest state, it's now ID 8.01.
There are a couple of problems, using Print Booklet for 'printing' as PDF:
    a) Settings for Resolution and Compression cannot be found in InDesign dialogues.
External settings in the 'printer' Adobe PDF are ignored.
    b) Some Encapsulated PostScript components are considered as buggy, though
Export to PDF without Print Booklet for the same pages is flawless, and furtheron
these components themselves are correctly interpreted by other programs
        (MathType, Photoshop, PSAlter...).
    This is the error log:
    %%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
    %%[Page: 1]%%
    %%[Page: 2]%%
%%[ Error: typecheck; OffendingCommand: makefont ]%%
    Stack:
    [448.0 0.0 0.0 -448.0 0.0 0.0]
    -file-
    -mark-
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
Obviously, Print Booklet uses the somewhat outdated workflow via PostScript
and Distiller. This is not generally wrong (worked pretty good with PageMaker),
    but here it fails.
Now a few words about IDImposer, which I had tested:
This program creates an imposed version of an InDesign file by generating one PDF
for each page. These pages should be uncompressed and not downsampled, which
is unnecessary for InBooklet SE, where we have only links to already existing
components. The new ID doc contains one PDF per page in the imposed page structure.
Therefore nothing is editable by InDesign. The following Export to PDF leads normally
to correct documents with working Links for URLs (garbled in just one case).
This is obviously not an optimal substitute for InBooklet SE.
    Thanks for the discussion.

  • How to make a 'printready' booklet pdf?

    InDesign CS6
Sorry in advance for any incorrect terminology :-)
I have a *thick* booklet to be printed -- has about 3mm creep.
No idea if printing company will be able to use the source files (or know how) to deal with this.
    Now...
I have my print-ready PDF (each page separate), but want to provide them with a print-ready 'booklet' pdf.
If I use File > Print Booklet and send to Adobe PDF 'printer', I can get what I want, but it's not print-ready.
*Is* there a way to get a print-ready booklet PDF???
    Thanks.

    Why? I don't know :-)
When I compare the documents (single page 'export' vs booklet-spreads 'print booklet') at 800%, the images on the 'export' are crisp. The images on the booklet are seriously pixellated/unreadable.
If it *is* possible to get print-ready, I'd love to!
This is what I'm doing - any help is greatly appreciated.:
    File > Print Booklet.
    Displayed settings:
    Printer: Adobe PDF
    Booklet type: 2-up Saddle Stitch
    Creep: 3mm
Margins: Automatically Adjust to Fit Marks and Bleeds
    Print Blank Printer Spreads
    Click Print Settings:
    General:
    Print Preset: [Custom]
    Printer: Adobe PDF

  • What PDF export settings to use for highest possible resolution printing?

I use indesign to create a roughly 68-page marketing booklet. The document is landscape and setup to print on 8.5" x 11" as a landscape book with facing-pages. I upload a PDF to a professional printing company to print a full bleed booklet. The book usually includes roughly 15, full-page, high resolution images as well as numerous other high resolution images throughout so it is important that the resolution is as high as possible and the images come out clean when printed.
On my old computer, I had a custom PDF export preset that I used to produced hi-res, print quality pdf's that were approximately 528MB in size.  I recently got a new computer and I lost that old Preset...  Now, when I use the "high quality print" default setting, the file size is about 74MB, much lower than what the documents used to be. I have played around with some of the settings, but I still cannot get the files to come out near as large as they used to be.
Is this an Indesign doument setup issue, or an export issue?  What settings should I use in order to produce the largest, highest-quality, highest-resolution PDF possible?
Thanks for an input and guidance!

The size in mb is pretty much irrelevant and is going to vary with the number of pages and the type and quantity of graphical content.
The HQ Print preset downsamples  raster art to 300 ppi if it's over 450, and uses jpeg compression to reduce file size. This is usually more than adequate for commercial printing. For fine art printed at a 200 lpi screen you might want to change the downsampling to 350 or 400 ppi and use zip compression (lossless) or no compression at all. I suspect your custom preset used no compression, and might not even have downsampled, but there's no advantage to sending more image data than the RIP needs to process the image.

  • Can't print booklet to PDF?

I am using InDesign CS5 (7.0.3) on Mac OSX 10.6.8.
I've created a short 12-page document, 5.5"x8.5", and I want to print it 2-up so it will fit on letter-size paper that I can fold and staple. Simple, right?
I can't figure out how to print it as a PDF.
I go to "print booklet" and the options are either to print to my printer, or to print to "PostScript File," which I select and I end up with a .ps file.
Then I open Acrobat Distiller and drag the file to the window, where it is turned into a PDF file.
BUT...the resulting PDF file has all the text printed portrait instead of landscape, and most of it is cut off. Not what I wanted.
I've been through every dialogue box I can find, and I don't see any settings to change the orientation of the page for the .ps or .pdf file. The print preview looks perfect.
How do I fix this? Thank you!

Some articles I've read give me instructions on where to put my PPD file, but not on how to obtain a PPD file (I've searched my computer and the web with no luck). Either I'm clueless (definitely a possibility) or the instructions are lacking.
The article to which you linked told you pretty clearly where you could find that PPD, assuming that you have installed Acrobat 9 at some point in the past.
If you do not have Acrobat 9 installed, then why don't you search Google for "ADPDF9.PPD"? It's the second link. And, because you ask us to spell it out: you'll want to right-click on the link and choose Save Link As, and make sure you save it with that name - ADPDF9.PPD.
However, given the length of the document (it's really short), then I have another suggestion for you - do it manually. No, seriously! I'm assuming that your source document is already at the "letter-half" page size. What you can do is:
    1) Fold up some paper so that you have a 12-page booklet. Write page numbers so you know which panel goes where, when you...
    2) Unfold that paper. See, now you can see exactly what is going on under the hood!
    3) Make a new, empty portrait-orientation letter-size InDesign document.
    4) Using your handy key that you made in steps 1 and 2, place your letter-half content-having InDesign file into your empty InDesign file. (Yes, you can place ID file 1 into ID file 2 and it will behave like an image.)
This feels like a lot of work, but it's work that will not simply vanish the next time that somebody at Adobe or Apple decides to change the way that PDFs or printers work. Also, you'll get a better understanding of what goes on during imposition, and you'll have easily editable files. Make changes to the source file, update the links in your target booklet INDD, and you're ready to go!

  • Why does "Print Booklet" from Indesign CS5.5 only create low res pdf? How do I get High Res for Offs

Long time ID user in Agency. Created a simple 4 page brochure in CS5.5 ID. Facing pages for cust size 11x17 half fold document.
Generating the pdf for Press and HQ Print renders a nice high res document, but the print booklet feature only produces a skinny low res version. Tried to mess with the printer settings, but the result is the same with a skinny low res document.
I didn't want to recreate the brochure as a two page manually imposed as I like the option of being able to add more pages in increments of four of course. Plus it's just silly to do that when ID is supposed to handle it for me.
I worked around it this time by printing to .ps output then distilling, and then splitting the document so printer could have a "front" and "back" 11x17. But this seems kludged big time. This has to be a bug unless I am missing something.

You probably never changed the default settings in the PDF printer properties. In the print booklet dialog, click the Print Settings button, then the Setup button at the bottom of the Print Dialog that pops up, choose the PDF printer and click on Preferences. Reset the default reset the default settings to the ones you really want to use, or reset them in Windows... Control Panel > Devices and Printers... Double-click the PDF printer, then from the print queue dialog, Printer > Properties... General tab and clcik the Preferences button.

  • Security set to allow high resolution printing but pdf won't print

We create a large number of pdf files to send out to
clients, etc. We have been using security on all pdf's being sent out, however, some clients are having issues printing these pdf files even though our security settings are set to allow high resolution printing. Any one have any ideas why? I cannot duplicate the issue for whatever reason, the files still print for me.

I discover I am suddenly having a similar problem as well.
I have recently migrated to a new Intel iMac/Leopard, I'm on a network and trying to print to a Tektronix/Xerox 7700 laser printer. I can print anything other kind of document on that printer as long as it is not a PDF.
When I open the printer window it says the job has been stopped. I choose the job and tell it to "resume" at which point the printer pauses itself. Once it flashed a window that said Operation Not Possible - client-error-something-something and then closed before I could see what the last two words were.
I am currently using Adobe Reader 6.0. I would love to be able to try to print out of 7.0 but there seem to be continual download problems in the form of constant connection failures. I also have Acrobat 6.0 STD - can't print out of either one.

  • Print Booklet fails to create PDF

    Greetings all,
I've encountered a frustrating glitch in Print Booklet that doesn't seem to be mentioned in these forums or elsewhere on the web.
I regularly use Print Booklet to create imposed PDF files with the following workflow:
    Click File > Print Booklet...
    Click Print Settings...
    Select Adobe PDF 9.0 Printer
    Click Printer...
Check PDF settings, change as required
    Click Print
    Enter file name details
    Click Save
Click OK in print settings dialogue box
Click Print in Print Booklet dialogue box
Wait for PDF to be created.
Most of the time this works fine but all of a sudden the PDF file has failed to be created. No error messages appear - nothing happens at all. The usual PDF progress bars appear in InDesign as it processes each page, but then nothing.
I've had this happen in another similar document but thought it was a corruption in the particular InDesign file and have just ignored it up until now.
The current document is a 24 page colour catalogue and contains many hi rez images. I wonder if the size of the document has exceeded some kind of memory requirement somewhere?
I've been able to use Print Booklet to create a PDF of the first 20 pages, or the last 20, but not the entire document.
The only difference in the document since it last worked correctly is that a few more images have been added and some more text, but no extra pages.
I'm using InDesign CS3 and Acrobat 9 Pro on a MacBook Pro with 4Gb RAM running Mac OS X 10.5.
    Any suggestions much appreciated!

  • Print Booklet - OS X - PS to PDF with Preview, and a mysterious line?

    Hi,
I'm preparing something for print, and I've run into a couple of questions I'd love some advice on.
The printshop wants the A5 booklet as a A4+bleed PDF, so I'm producing 'Print Booklet' to a Postscript with the PDF PPD and using Apple's Preview to convert to PDF. Is Preview's conversion going to cause me any problems, for example any unwanted compression/other unpleasant surprises?
Upon conversion Preview is showing a hairline white gap between the now combined first and last page (see image below). In the original document the purple-ness extends beyond the 3mm bleed on the respective edge of both pages. I was wondering if anyone might have an idea why this would be the case?
    Thanks in advance,
    James

Hi, Your problem may be the creep setting. Set it to 0.  Also, I often encounter white hairlines (object boxes)  that come & go depending on the zoom setting. I've learned to trust they do not print at the print shop.
I have a questions to add to this.....
I just upgraded from SC2 to SC6 and swtiched from PC to Mac OS Lion (10.7). I'm having trouble with print booklet settings - I'd like to set to device independent, but it  won't seem to output on anything other than letter size; the settings to change paper size on device independent is greyed out). It will only print on letter size, meaning I only get the even pages of the booklet spreads. I too am a control freak and like to make sure everything is lined up perfectly before sending off to printer. I can get it to work if I use my home printer ppd (whimpy inkjet), but feel uncomfortable having it be dependent on that ppd as opposed to the professional printer ppd.
Our former printer imposed the pages from a pdf file... but our current printer wants it in booklet.
    Thanks -

  • Image quality problem when Printing Booklet to PDF

    Hi!
I've searched the entire web trying to find a working solution for my problem but I wasn't able to find anything...
I've created a A5 vertical page document in InDesign CS6, filled with High-Quality photographs. I now want to print it as a booklet (to a PDF file) so I can save it and print it in a professional establishment.
The problem is, when I do this, the image quality turns out terrible...
I've checked my Print Settings and I can't find anything wrong...
Setup - A4 horizontally, and Graphics - Images - Send Data - is set to All.
Is there anything else I can do/try? What can I be doing wrong?
Here is an image of my print settings:
When I export the document normally to PDF the image quality is fine, but it doesn't have the booklet layout which I need, it just exports single A5 pages one after the other. If I try to print this pdf as a booklet in Adobe Reader the same thing happens to the images, they loose quality.
    Please help!!
    Thanks : )

Hi! Thank you for your quick and helpful answer.
There's definetly something wrong with the PDF printer properties... It was on standard default, as you said... but it still didn't work when I changed it to press quality (also tried high-quality print), changed the dpi's and other few settings on the advanced preferences
My solution was to download a free-trial of a professional pdf editor/creator (Soda PDF) and print it to that program... but, of course, this is not a long-term solution...
I'll try and see if I can find any help in changing the settings to get the best quality in printing of the adobe acrobat program.
    Thanks!
p.s: I think I meant to say "graphic press" when I wrote professional establishment, I'm not sure how you say it in English.

  • Trouble printing booklet to PDF

I'm using InDesign CS6 on Mac OS 10.6.8. I'm new to Id so any help would be appreciated.
I've created a 20 page booklet (2-up Saddle Stitch; letter-Half V), and when I choose File/Print Booklet, it looks correct in the preview pane, but no matter how I tweak the printer settings the PDF doesn't come out with the proper spread orientation.  Instead, it's forced onto a single page, portrait view and, of course, half of the right side of the spread is chopped off. The pages are properly imposed, but just turned the wrong way.
Because the PDF print option doesn't show up on the printer list, I've been creating a .ps file and converting it to PDF with Adobe Distiller v10. I've tried selecting landscape in the printer settings but as soon as I change the output to postscript, many setting options become grayed-out, and my previously selected setting doesn't get applied.  I also tried just exporting to PDF from Id, but it doesn't seem to give an option for a page imposition.
I've been searching for two days for a solution, but so far nothing seems to effect the final PDF layout. Please help!
    Inés

You can also try a script...
Dave Saunders wrote tow of them that work quite well for simple two-up, no bleed files. The first is at http://pdsassoc.com/downloads/Buildbooklet.zip and as far as I( know still works as recently as CS6, but cannot handle crossovers at the spine. For those you can try Dave's CS3 Booklet Script
The first script shuffles the pages in a new file, and you need to export with the Spreads box checked when you are done. The scond works by placing the original pages into a new file with pages wide enough to hold two of the originals, so you export that with Spreads unchecked.

  • Problem printing booklet to Postscript file to PDF (Mac)

I am running Mac OSX 10.7.5 and InDesign CC 9.2.1
I am trying to export a booklet to a PDF so I can send it to another machine to print.  I am going to File> Print Booklet and I am printing to a PostScript file. I am then opening it up in Preview and the orientation of the file is messed up.  Below are some screenshots.
So in File>Print Booklet> Preview it shows that I am perfectly inside the guidelines.  Notice it is in landscape mode.
Then I export it to a .ps file and open it up in Preview (note: I have also tried Acrobat IX Pro). And the file is messed up and in portrait mode.
From what I can tell it looks like InDesign is exporting the file in portrait instead of landscape but I can't change it in the InDesign Print Booklet settings because it is greyed out.
Any recommendations on how to fix this problem? Or workarounds so that I can export a booklet to a PDF?  I need to export it in 2-up saddle stitch mode, so I need page 1 to be next to page 12 and so on.
    Thank you for the help!

You need to download and install the ADPDF9.PPD printer description and use it instead of Device Independent.

  • How do I save an 11x17 spread pdf with bleeds via print booklet (paginated) so I can send to FedEx to print?

I used to be able to Print Booklet and change the print setting to Save as postscript and Distill it but when I do that now the pages get cropped so they are no longer 12x18.

On the other hand ... the next time you do this, you might want to check out one of the imposition plug-ins for InDesign. I work for Sterling Computing, the maker of IDImposer, so that would be my choice, of course!
    Comparing the two alternatives:
    The PostScript-Distiller approach:
"I added a new Document Preset for oversize (File >Print Presets >Define...  make a new one this size:17.5833  11.5833)
Make sure your bleeds are already set (.125)
    File > Print Booklet
Select the Print Preset you just made
    click Print Settings...
Select the Print Preset you just made (yes, again)
    Printer: PostScript File
    PPD: Adobe PDF 9.0
    OK
    Print
    Save the .ps file
Open it with Distiller or Adobe Acrobat Pro
    Output to PDF"
Elapsed time: anywhere from 5 minutes to days or even weeks
    Chance of errors: moderate
    Ease of use: poor
Quality: flattened transparency, loss of managed color
    Vintage: late 1980's
    vs
    The IDImposer approach:
Verify that your Bleeds are set the way you want them, in File > Document Setup... > More Options
    Window > Extensions > IDImposer
    In IDImposer:
Set the imposition type (Saddle Stitch, probably) and desired Sheet size (18 x 12) in the IDImposer dialog
Click the "Impose" button, and watch the screen flash for a minute or so
Optional: Inspect the results in InDesign. Maybe do a quick proof print.
Export to PDF (from InDesign): File > Export... > Adobe PDF (print)
Elapsed time: typically under 2 minutes, for a 16 page booklet
    Quality: excellent
