Print dialog weirdness

When I print an image (File->Print Image...) I adjust the Printer Settings using using the dialog you get when pressing the "Printer Settings" button. I pick a preset (that is a printer driver settings preset, not an Aperture Printer Settings Preset) that reflects my choice of paper, switches off in-printer color profiles, say, something like "premium glossy".
When clicking "done" on the printer settings dialog, Aperture seems to think for a few seconds (print dialog is unresponsive), and when I hit the "Printer Settings" button again, the Preset has changed back to "Standard" (with the wrong paper choice, the wrong color profile option, etc.). I change it back to "premium glossy", but to no avail (Aperture keeps changing it back).
Finally I decide that maybe deep down inside Aperture remembers that I wanted the "premium glossy" setting, and print. But sure enough, the print looks terrible, with ink bleeding out at the edges which makes me think the printer had no idea what type of paper it was printing on.
Anyone else noticed this? I believe this used to work for me. Perhaps a 10.4.8 thing? Aperture 1.5.0 on my Mac Book Pro and Aperture 1.5.1 on my Dual PowerPC G5 behave in exactly the same way. Both machines have 10.4.8. I'm printing to an EPSON Stylus Photo 2200.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Dirk.
MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Tom, firstlaunch,
even though I think there is still a bug in the system, your comments led me to a workaround - thanks!!
Whether or not I make a new Aperture Printing Preset, the presets under "Printer Settings..." always get switched back to "Standard": I make a new Aperture preset, call it "glossy", pick a preset under "printer settings" that has that paper, click "Done", click "Save" in the Aperture Printer Dialog. When I click "Printer Settings" again, it has switched it back to "Standard", even though the Aperture "glossy" printing preset is still selected!
Anyway, here's the good news - I make a new Aperture preset, call it "glossy". I go to "printer settings", and switch the settings of the "Standard" printer preset to use glossy paper, and whatever else I want to change. I hit "Done", and "Save" in the Aperture Print Dialog. Now, whenever I select the "glossy" Aperture preset, the "Standard" printer preset has the glossy paper etc. selected. When I select another Aperture presets (like Sample Single Image Preset), again, the "Standard" printer preset is selected, but now it has different settings (plain paper, etc).
Weird, but I think it'll work. Thanks again!
Dirk.

  • Printer dialog page doesn't give me landscape/portrait Orientation option

    When I try to print something, and bring up the printer dialog window, I no longer have the option of swapping between landscape and portrait.
    I used to be able to hit command-P, then select Layout, where I was given a choice between Orientation: a graphic up for Portrait and sideways for Layout.  I would also get a small print preview window where I could see each page formatted.
    Now all I get it is a small icon with the digit 1 where the preview used to be, and no Orientation option.  Layout Direction is there, as are other options, but not that one.  And now things only print in Landscape; I can't change print jobs to Portrait.
    I deleted (really renamed) my ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.print.PrintingPrefs.plist file, and then restarted my application, as I saw that as a suggestion in a different thread, alas no joy.
    Background: I'm running Mavericks OS 10.9.1.  I have an old Macbook on the same OS level; it works on that machine.  The screen is failing on the old one so I'm trying to get the new one up & running.  When I bought this new one I tried to clone it using Time Machine but that failed (very long story) so I had to manually copy over User and Library directories to get this one going.  I'm guessing something didn't get copied over right, but regardless I should be able to select this as an option on any print.
    To make matters more confusing, it didn't work on ANY app at first, but as I've poked around on it tonight (3-4 hours) it started working on some apps but not others.  I have no idea why.  Weird.
    I really need help; I'm desparate!
    Thanks.

    So your observations and especially your last question was a very good one.
    I checked the old laptop (where it was working) and the print dialog boxes appear to be consistent across machines, but different across applications.  In Safari I do get something closer to what you have, in Firefox (and other apps) it's what I showed.  I could have sworn they all acted the same, I thought that pop-up window was OS-generated, but maybe not.
    You're on to something here.  I'm checking how it works with File -> Page Setup now.  It looks like they moved the Orientation option over there rather than in the print dialog box ... depending on exactly what application it is.  That seems to be the case in Firefox at least.
    I've got a number of apps to run through and check, and it's real late so I'll have to finish my checking tomorrow.  But this is hopeful.  My tax software is where I first noticed it (IRS forms get truncated when you print them landscape, sigh) but you may have pointed me in the right direction.
    Confirmation later, but even so thanks for now!

  • Acrobat 9 Mac Print dialog freezes

    I haven't been able to print from Acrobat 9 Pro for Mac for about many months. I can open the Print dialog box and change settings, but as soon as I click the Print button, Acrobat freezes and I have to force quit. (More accurately, the Print dialog box can be dragged around, but even if I switch to a different app, like the Finder, the Print dialog box stays open -- Print button no longer flashing. Nothing prints, and the dialog box cannot close until I force quit.)
    Even worse, it happens when I print a PDF from Safari, too! It's been driving me crazy, and I've tried a ton of different troubleshooting techniques.
    Currently using 9.2.0 on Mac OS 10.5.8. Not sure when the problem started, but I've done a number of Acrobat and OS updates since then, always hoping that one will fix it. No luck.
    I thought it was the free version of Font ExplorerX from linotype that I've been using far, far too long. When I quit that, it seemed to work once... but now even without that running it's crashing. So perhaps it was a fluke.
    Also, sometimes it works if I hit the Print button really quickly after the dialog box opens. That's even weirder.
    Yes, I have removed the printer driver and reinstalled.
    Frustrated. (I usually just open the pdf in Preview and print, or place it in InDesign and print. But sometimes, like today when I have to print a contract with digital signatures, only Acrobat will do.)
    Sigh,

    One thing I've learned since OSX 10.2 is that Mac is finicky about printer drivers too.
    I had a Lexmark and it would freeze all the time after I switched to Panther. It was a discontinued model so when I moved up to 10.3 there were no new drivers. The old ones installed OK but they would cause it to freeze up and if it did print, it took about ten minutes to get through a page of text.
    I got a new printer and one tht had current drivers available for Mac and the problem was solved.
    It seems we fight a never-ending battle with hardware and software racing to stay ahead of each other.
    Yes I've owned three printers since owning my first Mac an SE 30 I started out with a Apple ImagewriterII (made C-Itoch).  I had to switch when I bought a 7100/66 which used the PowerPC processor instead of the 68030 processors. Then I had a HP DJ 650cse which used a Black Cartridge only. No color. I had to change again When I bought my G4-500. I am still using it today. Its the best printer I've had so far. I fear when I buy a new Intel Mac, and comes with X.6 (Snow Leopard) I will have to swap again. I've seen the new HP DeskJets and the won't last as long this one.  They look like cheap toys and (gulp!) they use heads built like in epson not the Cartridges.  The Cartridges were more expensive. But each time you bought one you got a new set of print heads. No longer.

  • Photoshop CS5 print dialog

    I am trying to print with my new 27" imac i7 (G5 forced upgrade), Snow Leopard, Epson 4000, Epson Driver 8.19 and Pshop CS5 and having a weird thing occur. In the past (CS4 on G5) I have always gone into the Pshop print dialog box and shrunk the image and repositioned it to run sequential test, same sheet before I make the larger print version. The old G5 would send the image to the printer the epson 4000 would load the paper move it the the correct location print the small area and spit out the paper. Now I send, it the printer loads the paper and as if you are printing the whole sheet image the head moves the entire width and length of the sheet but only lays down ink to where I designated in the dialog box. So the test takes as long as a full size print. Any ideas whats up?
    Thanks
    Bob Barry

    No, no presets but you can record the settings in an action. The action can record printer, printer settings and color management settings.

  • Print dialog box wont go away...

    Weird print stuff? Every time I print the print dialog box stays on the screen?
    It can be moved but none of the buttons do anything. And the print boxes will stack up as many times as you print.
    Driver issue? since OS X 10.6?

    HI,
    If the printer icon is still in the Dock, click that icon, then click: Quit.
    if that doesnt work, open Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities). Select My Processes from the pop up menu on the right. Search for your printer under Process Name, then click the red Quit Process button.
    If that doesn't help, go to...
    ~/Library/Preferences and locate the preference file associated with your printer, it will read something like this. Preference files can become corrupted. The next time you print, your Mac will create a new print pref file for you.
    com.nameofprinter.plist (I assume they're HP's according to your prior posts).
    Move that file to the Trash and restart your Mac.

  • Adobe PS CS3 has major flaws in Print Dialog. Beware!

    System Specs:
    OSX Leopard 10.5.2
    MacPro 3.2ghz with 32GB of ram 1.5GB Video
    Epson 11880 Printer
    Samsung XL20 LED monitors calibrated using EyeOne Pro 6500k 2.2 and 120c/d
    I have been trying to build a custom profile for my new Epson 11880. However, my results have been unsuccessful. All my prints came out super dark. The color is all off except for the grey scale.
    After talking to Epson for hours I found out that the new Beta driver for the printers have a problem, so rolled back to v3.89. This fixed all printer problems. So printer is fine now. This also applies to the Epson 3800.
    Spoke to Apple about their color management and Leopard issues? No fault found on the OS.
    Ran a test using preview, iPhoto, EyeOneMatch, Photoshop CS, and CS3. I couldn't find my CS2 disk so I didn't get a chance to test that. preview, iPhoto, CS, and EyeOneMatch all came out with same results when printing a 9.18 target without PCM. However, CS3 printed the image dark and off color with the exact same settings. Problem has been persistent and I would like to conclude that CS3 needs to fix this bug in their software. It is ridiculous to be printing using another software because CS3 can't do a simple task as print.

    viewing conditions are fine.
    I have the whole room outfitted with GTI D50 lights. What can I say I am anal. No matter where you stand the light will hit 5000k. I change the bulbs out every 1500 hours although they tell me I can wait until 2000 hours.
    My monitor is also calibrated properly. I am using the Samsung XL20 and XL30 monitors, which surpass the Eizo or any other LCD's on the market. I've owned the Eizo, NEC, Artisan, and any other monitors you can name. I also made sure my Spectrometer is fine and it is.
    When printing targets with the setting set to NO Color Management in Photoshop it should yield the same results as the other applications. The only thing you are technically utilizing then is the printer driver and dialog box. Yes the printer dialog is always same and set properly also. PCM is set to no color management. I've tested this with other applications and it is CS3 that is giving me all the problems.

  • Print Dialog doesn't retain settings

    I am using kPrintActionCmdBoss to print several times from the same document (different layers each time). I want to put up the print dialog the first time, and then keep the user's settings for the subsequent prints. I can see that the settings are remembered by the document:
    IDocument* iDoc = Utils<ILayoutUIUtils>()->GetFrontDocument();
    InterfacePtr<IPrintData> docPrintData(iDoc->GetDocWorkSpace(), UseDefaultIID());
    bool16 debug1 = docPrintData->GetPrintBlankPages();
    debug1 is kTrue if I ticked the 'Print Blank Pages' box in the dialog.
    I try setting the print command's print data:
    InterfacePtr<ICommand> printActionCmd(CmdUtils::CreateCommand(kPrintActionCmdBoss));
    InterfacePtr<IPrintCmdData> printActionCmdData(printActionCmd, UseDefaultIID());
    printActionCmdData->SetPrintData(docPrintData);
    but the print command seems to pay no attention to the settings.
    Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Charles

    I also wonder why there is no "print preview" option in the Firefox print dialog box. I don't want a "workaround"—I simply want a print preview option the same way every other Mac application provides it in the print dialog box.
    Where did this go??

    I am using below code to print a pdf file. And the same code working fine when i am using with simple java class. and if i am using the same code with my jsf backing bean action method it was not working.

    printJob.setPageable(book);

    printJob.print();
    When i am calling my action method (method contains above code) it was creating pdf file and writing the data init success fully but when i have not used "if(printJob.printDialog())" it was printing document directely successfully but when i am calling "if(printJob.printDialog())" it was not opening print dialog box and it was showing me like process is going on and it was not proceeding further
    what's the problem
    Please help me.
    Thanks In advance,

    Hi Kavi,
    just have a look into the driver-program. I'm pretty sure someone has programmed a loop.
    IF it is a NAST-driver program, check if your specific user has a printer SU03. That sounds a lot like this mistake

  • Print dialog options in case sensitive file system

    Since changing the file system running Lion and Mountain Lion from Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled), certain features in print dialogs have disappeared.
    Particularly the option to print notes with slides in Microsoft Powerpoint are gone. Also, when choosing to print only 1 (or more, but not all) of multiple pages in Microsoft Word, the printer will nevertheless print all pages.
    This problem occurs on printers of different brands, i.e. HP, Lexmark, Brother.
    I was able to determine this problem by reproducing the issue on a cleanly installed Macbook Pro with OS X 10.8 formatted as Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) vs a cleanly installed Macbook Pro with OS X 10.8 formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), not Case-sensitive.
    Has anyone else had the same problem and maybe a solution?

    I just fixed this on my Mac. It is a bug in Microsoft Office... the Printer Dialog Extension (PDE) for Powerpoint is located in a directory named "Plugins", but PowerPoint is looking for it in "PlugIns". This obviously does not work in a case-sensitive filesystem.
    Here are the steps to fix the issue:

    I am in the initial stages of figuring out how to use Aperture (v1.5). I am currently trying to make a 5x7 print of a photo.
    In the print dialog, "Scale to" 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 size options are greyed out (only "fit image" and "fill entire page" are available).
    I've tried searching through the forums, but to no avail...
    Thanks!

    Click the Arrange button on the toolbar and select the desired option.

  • Printing a report and using the print dialog for it

    i already have the print dialog vi from NI. I am using the normal report generation toolkit for printing reports. But I want to give the user an option to choose the number of pages and landscape/portrait options. But how do I integrate the 2 so that before printing the user can select these features.

    There is an activeX control that will set these settings. It is called IAS Helper COM Component 1.0 Type Library. It operates the Windows printer configuration program. Since another company wrote the code, I do not have the resources to help you use the control, but the attached example program should get you started.

  • "Quality and Media" not displaying in Print dialog.

    I am using Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on a Macbook Pro with a Canon MB5220 Multifunction printer over WiFi. I have installed the Canon Drivers and can print to the printer but the "Quality and Media" menu choice does not display in the print dialog so I can't set any of the quality settings or the color settings for the printer.
    I installed and re-installed the drivers. Tried with several applications such as TextEdit and preview. Only menu choices are Layout, Color Matching, Paper Handling, Cover Page, Scheduler.
    Is there anything that would keep Quality and Media from dispaying?

    It's not just the Quality & Media menu that appears to be missing. There are three other Canon menus you should see like below;
    These menu items are supported by the plugins bundle installed in /Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter/PDEs, which supports a number of Canon inkjet printers. Since reinstalling the driver for the MG5220 has not helped then I would try a reset of the printing system and then adding the printer again. To reset the printing system, open Print & Fax, move the mouse over the Printers list and Control-click. The reset popup will appear. Select it and authenticate if prompted and then restart the Mac. Please note that this action will remove all printer and scanner queues from Print & Fax, but not the associated drivers so just the queues will need to be added again.
    If this action does not resolve the problem then try running the Canon Driver Update v2.6.

  • Print html file without seeing a print dialog box

    i need to script an action that would allow a user to print a sparcly formated html file to a printer while bypassing the normal print dialog box.
    the unix lpr command seems like it might work, but the man page only mentions PS and txt files.
    Ultimately i'd want to trigger the print action from a php script, but it could be a folder action also.
    Does anyone have any suggestions or point me in the right direction.

    lp is the right command to use but you may need to convert the html file in PDF format before printing it. Just test it. Also type man lp to see more options.
    enscript is a nice utility that may help you. man enscript for more.

  • How to print specific pages of a pdf from a vb 2013 program using a print dialog

    Hi.  I am using the acrobat sdk to display pdfs from within a vb 2013 program, because the pdfs are large and we have developed indexes on certain columns.  The indexes are stored in SQL tables.  My program has a search window which allows the user to search for a value and displays all the pages on which this value appears in the indexed column in a listbox.  By double-clicking on the desired value in the listbox, the user can go to the selected page and column.  However, the user also needs to be able to highlight one or more of the pages in the listbox and print these pages.  I could do this silently using AcroExchAVDoc.PrintPages, but the user also needs to have a print dialog displayed in order to possibly select a watermark to be printed on the pages.  I also need to default the orientation of the pages depending on the document.
    I have reviewed the sdk documentation and also searched in Google and on this site but have not found a way to do this.  Does anyone have a suggestion?  Thanks for any help you can provide.
    Mary

    Hi.
    I did try using the printParams feature and it worked, but since I need to be able to print sets of non-consecutive pages,  I end up having to bring up the print dialogue multiple times and have the user set watermarks each time.
    I decided to just create a new pdf in a temp directory containing the selected pages and open this document in a new window.  This works well and allows them to use the print button on the window to print, bringing up the print dialogue just once.  However, since I need to open the document in a way that shows the print button, I am using OpenInWindowEx, with AV_DOC_VIEW, and the option PDUseBookmarks or PDUseThumbs, rather than PDUseNone.  This displays a toolbar which also includes icons for creating a new pdf, deleting pages, etc.  I do not really want to include these icons on the toolbar.  Is there a way to remove unwanted icons from the toolbar, or make them invisible?
    Hope this makes sense.  Thanks for your help.
    Mary
