"Print & Fax" preference pane is GONE!!!

I have been having trouble printing to my USB connected printer on my Imac from my G4 powerbook.
In looking into the problem, I have noticed that the "print & fax" preference pane in System Preferences is missing on both computers. I have a strange feeling that this is why my wireless shared printed has ceased.
Has anyone else had this problem or know of a way to get the Print & Fax pane back??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Shea

Ok...I tried your suggestions below, but upon restart, the preference pane STILL is not shown in System Preferences. I checked in the HD/System/Library/PreferencePane folder and I don't even see the Print & Fax prefPane listed among all the others...
Any other suggestions??
Shea,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Quit System Preferences if it's running and trash the
following file:
Macintosh
HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Caches/com.apple.prefere
ncepanes.cache
Log out/in or restart and try the Print & Fax
Preference Pane.

  • Managed Printers Don't Appear in Printer & Fax Preference Pane

Something curious to ponder. I've had this issue for a while now (though it's not a huge problem), where I have a managed Mac (managed via Mac OS X Server 10.6.8) that doesn't display the printers that have been added to a computer list via Workgroup Manager in the Mac's Printer & Fax preference pane. The printers do appear in CUPS (127.0.0.1:631), and the computer prints fine to the available printers, but they just don't appear in the preference pane. I've attached some screen shots for clarification.
    Computer list in Workgroup Manager
(even with the Only show managed printers option unchecked, nothing shows up in Printer & Fax)
    CUPS page on managed Mac
(All printers show up fine here)
    Print & Fax Preference Pane
(Printers don't show up here, why not?)
    Print dialog box in Safari
    (Printers show up here)
    Any ideas?

What happens if you start some type of sharing on the "problem" computer - iTunes Library sharing, File Sharing, or Screen Sharing - can the other 3 see what has been shared?

  • Can't add a printer in Print & Fax preference

I was having trouble with my printer resource for my HP Laserjet 6MP, which had been working fine until this week.  In print preferences, I deleted the printer, and another one for good measure.  When I went to add new printer, there were no printers to choose from.  I reset the printer resource (many times!) restarted the computer (many times!) turned off  and on the printer a few times,  tried everything again, but still no printers to choose from.
I downloaded the printer resource from this website, http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907and tried everything again, all the steps I tried before.  Still no luck.
I think the Print & Fax preference might be trashed.  How do I replace that?
I should add that I am not using the printer on a network, but directly from my USB.  I am networked only through wifi to my internet modem.  I know 10.6.8 sometimes has network connectivity issues with printers, but I'm not sure that's the cause of this, as I have been on 10.6.8 for awhile.
Thanks in advance for any advice.  You rock!

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 and restart your computer.

Reinstall is overkill.  (This isn't MS Windows, right?)
    From:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15721474#15721474
    Open: Mac HD/System/Library/Core Services/Directory Utility
Click the lock to authenticate changes
    Click on Directory Editor
Click to highlight any extra Guest accounts ("Guest1" "Guest2" etc.)
Delete them with the button, leaving only the standard "Guest" account.
    Reboot
If symptom persists or Disk Utility is crashing, consider this fix:
Copy "PlatformHardwareManagement.framework" from another (working) machine and place it in the same directory on your own upgraded machine.  (File also available on Snow Leopard OS 10.6 Macs.
    OR
Use the program "Pacifist" to open the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Install DVD (10.6)
Manually pull out the PlatformHardwareManagement.framework and replace the copy on the hard disk.

  • Print&fax preference disappeared

I no longer have a preference pane called FAX/Print in System Preferences.
    I have repaired permissions
    Any ideas
    Thanks

You can download the update from Apple support: http://support.apple.com/downloads/
It is the 10.5.6 Combo update. If something went bad with your update, that may be a good idea in any case.
You should check your disk with Disk Utility before doing this. You should check permissions and verify the disk.

  • Can't open print & fax preferences, can't print

I know I've read about this problem before, but I can't seem to find the thread. I'm a total novice when it comes to terminal, but I don't even know where to start. Whenever I try to print, or even open print & fax, I just get the spinning wheel. I'm using Leopard on a 17" MBP, and I'm set up on a network with several printers (I can't even open the individual printers...everything related to printers or printing just freezes!!)
    Any help is much appreciated!

I think I have bigger problems here...
I think you may be right.
    Have you installed anything recently?
Open up Console.app and see if there are any messages that repeat regarding the crashes.
How much free space do you have on the disk?
You can get into the CUPS web config through http://localhost:631
I couldn't find anything like "Reset Printing System," but you can view the error logs (which you can do from Console.app), and edit the Configuration file. There is a button to use the Default configuration, but I don't know what that will accomplish. Might be the last ditch effort before reinstall.
EDIT: From About the Reset Printing System feature:
What does Reset Printing System do?
Deletes all printer queues and jobs.
Resets all printer settings to their default by deleting configuration files.
Performs a permissions check on the /tmp directory.
    1) Can do that from CUPS interface
    2) Noted above
    3) They should be rwxr-xr-x root:admin

  • "Accounts" preference pane icon gone after 10.5.2 update

This weekend I realized that the Accounts preference pane icon is now missing from my system preferences. I checked my system/library/preferencepanes folder and the accounts.prefpane file is indeed not there. My login information is working fine; I just have no way to change any user information now. I have a feeling the 10.5.2 update has something to do with this.
Has anyone else noticed missing preference pane icons in their system preferences lately? Anyone know how to get the Accounts.prefPane back? Any help would be much appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
That's odd. You may be able to repair this with the 10.5.2 Combo Update.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Run Verify Disk in Disk Utility before update and Repair Permissions after.

  • Wireless printer fax

    Hi Guys and Gals,
I have a macbook pro and a HP Office jet 6700 print/scanner/fax. I want to be able to have a document on my computer and fax it to someone without having to print it and then fax it manually. I thought I had it hooked up property but it keeps saying looking for fax. The wireless printer and scanner works perfect. Please help me if what I want to do is even possible or if there is something I shoudl try that Im missing here.
    Thanks,
    Darcy

Are you just trying to use the fax or trying to install it? The fax should have a seperate driver for that model.
So you need to go to print and fax preference pane and press the + sign to add the Fax as if it is a completely different machine from your scanner/printer.

  • Preferences Pane interaction

I want to create a preference pane interaction with the command line tools.
I want to start and stop the apache and mysql server on preference pane, but i don´t no how to implemment this iteraction.
Any ideias how to do this?
    Tanks for any help.

    Hello Carolyn,
Thought I'd let you know what has transpired since we last conversed.
Using TechTools Pro's suggestion about plugging my keyboard directly into the USB of my Mac Pro, instead of the monitor USB, I was able to use the "option" key to select my Mac Pro hard disk to start up and it worked fine. So the hard disk is OK, it's the system printer "fax & printer" and "sharing" preferences that are messed up.
So I posted my question again in the Printing Topic forum (should have done that in the first place) and received a suggestion on how to reset the printing & fax preferences. (You open system preferences, put mouse over printing & fax icon, hold control and click on the icon, which should bring up a reset option.)
I haven't done this yet, because I am at work. But if it works, I will certainly let you and other readers of this thread know.
Thank you again for being so supportive and for your archive/install suggestions, which I still may have to use.
    Best,
    Shelley

  • Print & Fax prefs & any and all print commands unresponsive

    Hi all,
Newb here. I have a 17" mbp running Leopard 10.5.2. I'm networked to a Konica Printer at work and I sent a very large job across. The job was incorrect so I canceled it. That's when the trouble started. Now I can't even open the print dialog in ANY program, nor can I open "print & fax" preferences in sys prefs.
I've opened the activity monitor and cupsd is just devouring my cpu. I've tried to kill it and restart it in terminal, but honestly, I'm don't really know what I'm doing, nor what the core problem is. Any help is appreciated...is there any more info that you need from me to help troubleshoot?
    Thank you!

    Hi John,
Thanks for your suggestions. Just so you know, I'm not a "console & terminal" guy. I'm willing to try any of your suggestions, but you're going to have to walk me thru...
Opened console and there seems to be a constant stream of "cupsd" errors. Every 10sec actually.
    Here's the system log entry:
"Dec 28 09:10:46 MacPro com.apple.launchd[1] (org.cups.cupsd[86732]): Job appears to have crashed: Segmentation fault
Dec 28 09:10:46 MacPro com.apple.launchd[1] (org.cups.cupsd): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
    Dec 28 09:10:46 MacPro com.apple.ReportCrash.Root[86731]: 2010-12-28 09:10:46.278 ReportCrash[86731:2f03] Saved crash report for cupsd[86732] version ??? (???) to /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/cupsd2010-12-28-091046localhost.crash"
If you'd like to see the entire Diagnostic report, let me know.
    What would you suggest now?

  • Print & Fax Pane in System Preferences will not open

Hey, Folks, Anybody had this problem?
I am running 10.3.9 and I can't get the Print & Fax pane to open in System Preferences. All of the other panes will open. Does anyone know a fix or workaround for this problem? I would like to set up faxing from my computer which is an iMac flat-panel @ 800mgh.
    Thanking you in advance,
    Gerry Harpole
    iMac flat-panel   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Dan,
I do not believe or advocate that moving plist files to another user will solve plist corruption. Knowing that the problem is limited to a single user should eliminate your OS installation concerns.
Checking Console for clues, and Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption, by Dr. Smoke would be my next recommendation.
I would also recommend that you check out Font Management in Mac OS X Tiger and Panther, by Kurt Lang.

  • System Preferences hangs at "Loading Print & Fax..."

    Hi,
I tried to load a Canon printer driver for the ir1023. After the install it required a restart. The Mac Pro never fully turned off, so I was stuck having to do a manual shut down with the power button. I am sure this messed everything up.
When I logged back on System Preferences hangs at "Loading Print & Fax..." when I click the icon. So I deleted the printing preferences, from my preferences folder and still nothing.
I ran the canon installer and that ran successfully, but did not remedy the problem. No Mac programs will print, Photoshop will not launch and Text Edit won't quit.
I ran Disk permissions from the Leopard disk, still no improvement.
Any ideas on how to fix my printing woes without a reinstall?
And I was having some hardware issues with my Time Machine drive - so I had no backup to fall back on.
    Thanks!

I would run the UFR2 driver installer again, but when it shows Easy Install at the Installation Type pane, change the menu to Uninstall. This should remove all the UFR2 files, most of which are copied to ./Library/Printers/Canon/UFR2.
With the Canon files removed, try to open the Print & Fax pane again. If it still fails to load, you could try opening the CUPS web page (http://127.0.0.1:631). From here you can select the printer list and job list and possibly remove any existing printers or jobs that are in the system. Ideally we would like to reset the printing system, but I don't think we can do this from the web page or from Terminal - we need the GUI of Print & Fax.
Will do some more reading and get back to you....

  • Just installed 10.6.4. Now clicking on Print&Fax crashes system preferences

    Hi all,
Just installed Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and then couldn't print from my Kodak EasyShare 5300 printer. I installed updated software and firmware from Kodak. Still can't print and when I click on Print & Fax in system preferences it crashes system preferences. (Other system preferences options don't make it crash.)
I've repaired permissions and I've unplugged USB and power to printer and replugged and restarted computer and still no luck.
Help! Thanks so much, guys. You're an awesome bunch of folks who have been so helpful in the past. Hoping you can advise me here.

Tried that and it still crashed System Preferences when I clicked on Printer&Fax. But thanks for replying! Still looking for solutions. I know it's tough when I'm asking at the start of a holiday weekend!

  • System Preference: Print & Fax missing

    Hello.
When I go to System Preferences > Internet & Network...
My Print & Fax icon is missing. I can't select and default my installed printers.
How do I retrieve this icon?
    Thanks

It's an easy fix. Just delete the preferences file and open System Preferences to create a new one:
    1. Quit System Preferences.
    2. Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
    3. Choose Go > Go To Folder.
    4. Type: ~/Library/Caches
    5. Click Go.
    6. Locate this file: "com.apple.preferencepanes.cache"
    7. Drag it to the Trash.
    8. Open System Preferences.
