Print File Name in footer CUPS?

So I'm ocd and have been selling a bunch of stuff on ebay lately and want to get the shipping proccess as as simple as possible.  So my idea is to print the shipping label to a pdf file with the name of the item sold as the filename and then mass print the pdfs with the filename somewhere on the page, so that when it's time to ship i don't have to triple check to make sure that the shipping label corresponds with the right item.  Is this at all possible with cups? EDIT: I see that I can customize a banner file but i don't see an option for filename.  I see an option for job id etc but nothing for filename.  So does that mean it's impossible?

Okay, so you create some initial source file that contains the data you want to print. Then you convert this source file to pdf via the CUPS print-to-pdf feature. How do you create the initial source file?
Right now I can see two ways of getting the file name into the document.
Most office suits should be able to do what you want. With libre office (I tested it with lowriter) you can just hit ctrl+F2 and add the file name (and a lot of other things); it should be updated automatically for you if you change the file name. Don't forget to save the file!
Also, libre office can export to pdf directly. If you have libre office installed you might give it a try.
If you use plain text files, you might add some place holder somewhere and have it replaced by sed (or you could simply append the name at the end). Since you want to work with the pdf files in the end you can write a script that replaces the place holder with the file name and then generates the pdf for you.
I'm trying to make this simpler not more complicated. To print to pdf you just go file>print>print to file>select pdf>type in name you want for file.  I don't want to go editing the file I just would like the name of the file to be included on the document.    Sure I could go write it out but the printer is in another room and i'd prefer not to make a million trips back and forth

    When I print, a last page is printed with a summary of document printed - file name, directory, ... Just got Windows 8. Is this something I can stop? Waste of paper and ink!!

    Hi RebeccaQ,
    Generally speaking, a summary page, document summary or document properties page is often generated based on a setting in the software application being used as opposed to the printer driver or menu setting.  For example, in MS Word you can select to print this page with each printed document.  In this case, depending on your version of Word, you can enable/disable the feature often in "Word Options", "Display", "Printing Options", "Print Document Properties".
    Does this help?  If not, which printer model and software application is being used when the summary is printed?

  • Printing FILE NAME and DATE PRINTED?

    when i was on a mac i used to be able to have a default in the printer dialog so that every page printed showed the file name and the data printed. i would like to do this in the mac but i am guessing that this has to be done in either the specialized software dialog box or perhaps in a mac dialog box?
    in any event, can anyone help me figure out where i might find a place to do this? i haveadobe acrobat but i wold also like to do it in something like Preview as well.

    if i have documents coming that i print for a project and these are quite naturally coming from different software it i have no way now of being able to FIND this file in my computer when i am looking at it.
    Consider using Find from the File menu or Spotlight to search for the document. In one of your previous posts, you stated that you name documents with a date and name. Then perhaps search for the name. Also, with your method of naming documents, if the document is a letter, wouldn't the date on the letter and the person to whom the letter is addressed to give clues to the filename and thus finding it on your computer?
    this is a major organizational issue over here and customizing a template for all my various software should be unnecessary IMHO.
    I do not know how many documents you deal with but I do know that there a many organizations that deal with billions of documents. In addition, if you share documents with others or others with you, there is not a filenaming method that works for everyone. People adapt to each other. A date in a filename could have several forms such as month-date-year or year-month-date, two digits or four digits for year and so on and so forth.
    Are you saying it IS necessary to have this dual file type that has a Pages document which then prints a PDF?
    No. Please re-read  what I wrote and the Pages Help Center articles.
    also, is there in fact a way to save a PDF back out as a Pages document?
    Yes, re-read what I wrote (that which you quoted).
    "Acrobat has the capability to save a PDF in other formats such as Microsoft Word, which can be opened in Pages. That said IMO, a separate Pages document for each "custom" letter/report would not be necessary."
    alternatively i guess i could create a Pages TEMPLATE - that has a DATE in the header that automatically updates .../but/ i am realizing that this has the unfortunate consequence of having the DATE updated if i open the Pages document again
    But that is what you stated you wanted because
    ...and try to remember to SAVE AS this document with another name with the original FILE NAME but a NEW DATE. this does not always work and sometimes i write over the original accidentally.
    anyway, maybe the answer here is to create a Template for any new document type and simply use this template any time i need to create a PDF and then not save or delete the original Pages document but this seems a bit hairy and dangerous in terms of possibly losing a file if i forget to print to PDF or something.
    You have redundant backups, yes?
    It seems that your understanding of a template is different from what it actually is, its purpose and its use. If you have not already done so, try using one of the included Pages templates to create a document that you would reuse to get a better understanding of how it works and to help determine your workflow. What you wrote in the last post seems to be a lot of what ifs but not hands on experience with the software itself. My response was based on my experience of using many types of software and in particular to your questions, Pages and Acrobat. Perhaps you will find better responses in the Pages forum and for Acrobat there is a forum at the Adobe web site.
    is there a lock file functionality in Pages in Mountain Lion or was this in Lion?!
    Perhaps reviewing the tutorials for Pages or searching with Google would  help answer many of your questions.

  • Printing file name with Preview

    can anyone help me find out if there is a way to print the name of a file when printing out of Preview?
    i sometimes print one page or even a number of files to a page and would like to try and see if there is a way to put the file name next to the image or under the printed file.
    TIA for any help

    Sounds like a problem with your printer. Check your printer's manual for help or contact HP tech support.

  • Printing file name on document.

    I want to print the name of the file when I print out a document. Instead of writing out the file name on each document, can't I just choose some preferance to do this for me?

    In the Print dialog box, select "Marks and Bleed" in the left column, then select "Page Information"
    This will print the document title, date and time of printout at the top of the document but if your document is 8.5x11 and you print it on an 8.5x11 piece of paper, then this information will not make it on your printed page.

  • Printing file names of specified folder

    I feel like this is an incredibly simple question, so I'm a little embarassed to ask, but I've never used automator before. How do I set it up to print just the file names inside a specified folder?

    If you're saving this as a Plug-in for the Finder, then the steps would be Get Folder Contents >New Text File > Print Finder Items. There's a more in-depth tutorial here that uses a slightly different method (new text document) which doesn't print automatically.

  • How do I get the file name to print up closer to a horizontal photo?

    Kind of a nit-picking question, but here goes anyway:
    I use Lightroom's Print module to create contact sheets (three rows by three columns). I check the "Photo Info" check box and select "Filename" to have the file names printed with each photo. When the photo is shot vertically, the file name prints at the lower edge of the photo, as you would expect. However, when the photo is shot horizontally, the file name still prints down in the same place where it would print if the photo were vertical. That can be confusing because if the next photo down on the sheet is vertical, a file name can end up being much closer to the vertical photo below it--to which it is completely unrelated--than to the horizontal photo above it, to which it actually refers.
    Is there any way to get Lightroom to print file names closer to horizontal photos?

    Thanks to both of you for your speedy responses. Making all the shots horizontal or vertical (i. e., unchecking the "Rotate to Fit" box on the right) is not what I want. Increasing the vertical spacing is a possibility, but that'll make the vertical shots smaller. There's a program called "ImageBuddy" which does exactly what I want LIghtroom to do in this instance: print the filenames of only the horizontal shots higher and therefore closer to the photos to which they refer. It's quite cheap, but I'd rather not use Lightroom for everything else and ImageBuddy just for contact sheets, so if anybody knows of a way to do what I want to do within Lightroom, please do clue me in.

    I have the code to read from a file but my problem is how to prompt the user for the file name at run time.

    I have read through some of the tutorials that you have directed me too and they are very useful, thank you. however there are still a few things that i am not clear about. I am using net beans 5.0 I have placed a text file named Results.txt into the project at the root so the program can view it.
    When I use the code that you provided me with, does it matter where the file is, or will it look through everywhere on the hard drive to find a match?
    This code compiles but at run time it comes up with this error
    run-single:
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: NamedFile
    Exception in thread "main"
    Java Result: 1
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 3 seconds)

        String  fileName;

        Scanner scan = new Scanner( file );
        while( scan.hasNextInt() )   // is there more data to process?
          num = scan.nextInt();
          square = num * num ;
          System.out.println("The square of " + num + " is " + square);
    }his is the code that i used. It is the same as the code you posted for me (on chapter 23 I/O using Scanner and PrintStream) Sorry im just really stuck on this!!
