Print Library - resolution dropped

Once upon a time the resolution of album art when using Print > Album listing was quite good.  I don't print a paper copy, that would be wasteful, but sending it to a PDF distiller would result in a very nice looking file with clean, sharp album art.
With some latest version of iTunes (couldn't say exactly when this changed), printing an Album listing looks wretched.  The text and iTunes-supplied graphics are fine, but the album art looks horrible.  I have even tried printing one page direct from iTunes to an Epson R1800, looks as bad as the PDF output.  Tweaked all my PDF settings (Press Quality with Optimize For Fast Web View turned off), no change.
So at some point iTunes started sending rotten resolution to the printer.
All my album art (with a couple of exceptions) looks fantastic in iTunes.  I can scale Cover Flow quite large and they still look pretty good (and yes, I understand the difference between screen and print resolution).  Most of the album art I found myself via image search or other websites - I try to stay around 600x600 dpi.  So a 1.5" square tile on an Album listing printout should look fantastic.
What happened?  I have old PDFs of old libraries that look great.  Are those days over?  Paperless society or not, I'd still like to be able to get a nice-looking PDF.

What format are these reports? If you are suing JDK 6, check out the java.awt.Desktop class. It uses your OS's supported functions to do options such as print, browse, mail, open, edit, etc.

  • Image resolution drops from Illustrator to Photoshop

    Hello. I have an .ai with an image in it. After transfer to photoshop (by copying, or by saving the file as either .ai or .pdf and placing it in photoshop), the image resolutions seems to drop significantly (to about a third), telling by eyesight (is there a way to determine the resolution of an image (a pixel graphic) within illustrator?). Does anyone know why, and what to do about it? (Reason is that I need to get rid of the background, of which I don't know how to in ai.)
    Thanks

    It sounds like you are doing this backwards.  Usually you remove the background in the image in PS and Place the image in Illustrator which is transparent to begin with ( i.e., no background unless you give it one ).  If you must do it your way, just "Export" the file out of Illustrator into PS as high res.  But, you can give your Ai file a document resolution ( File > Print > Output resolution ) of 2540 dpi and the Raster resolution at 300ppi.  Copying it to PS will only give you PS's default res.

  • Question about printing and resolution

    Hello
    I am trying out a trial version of PE13 and am attempting to come to terms with printing and resolution.
    I have also read this informative tutorial here:
    How Image Resolution Affects Print Quality - Photoshop Tutorial
    This is the image I would like to print:
    In the tutorial referred to above, the author states that when printing, 300 resolution is best and not the 79.3 px/inch that I have. When I change that 79.3 to 300, the image of Marilyn becomes tiny, so my question is how can I have an image that would neatly fit onto A4 photo paper maybe with a 1" white border around it (meaning the image size would be 8" x 6") while retaining a 300 resolution?
    Am I going about this the right way, aren't I?
    Many thanks.
    Steve

    Steve,
    The most important thing about resolution is the dimension in pixels.
    Your original is 433 x  653 pixels. Just good enough to display on a normal laptop.
    With A4 format at 300 ppi, you'd need:
    21 / 2.54 * 300 = 2480 pixels wide
    29.7 / 2.54 * 300 = 3507 pixel high.
    Any image editor won't be able to add the missing resolution, but the solution is to let the editor guess the missing pixels by interpolation methods.
    You won't get more details than those present in the original file, but you'll get a smoother, non 'pixelated' image.
    In the Elements editor, you have to check the 'resample' checkbox to be able to keep the outpur size while increasing the ppi to 300.

  • Is there any way to stop the print screen from dropping down on top of the page to be printed.  Can the print screen be moved?

    Is there a way to stop the print screen from dropping down on top of the page to be printed.  Can the print screen be moved?  When the print screen drops down, it covers the page and the info needed to create the file.  Thank you

    You will find that this is application dependent.  Most Apple applications such as Safari and Mail will use the "sheet" type of dialog boxes that you are referring.  There is no way for the user to change that behavior.  Other, non-Apple, applications like Firefox use a "modal" dialog box for printing etc.  The modal boxes can be moved around so you can see the page behind.

  • Office 7500A E910 prints high resolution document in 1/4 size

    I am trying to print a 25 Mb A4-size document full of pictures in a 300 dpi resolution from Adobe photoshop (PC-version)  to my newly aquired Officejet 7500A Wide format networked printer. The documents prints to another printer (HP 2800 laserjet) without any problems. With the 7500A, it prints successfully when I print with the below normal quality selected in the paper/quality print choice, but when I choose normal or best quality, the document is scaled down to the upper quarter corner of the A4 paper I print to.
    I have tried to print to high quality hp papers (eg. the HP premium plus paper) without any difference shown. I am using color printing. The original I am printing from is black/white-pictures, however, but I assume this is not the reason?
    If I print from Photoshop to a high quality pdf-file, then print that at 600 dpi to my officejet 7500A, the file prints ok. The resulting pdf file is 4,5 Mb, can file size be the issue?
    Since I bought this printer to print high resolution photographs in a large format, I really hope someone can help me...

  • High resolution PDF still generates low resolution drop shadows?

    I have created a series of print ads in InDesign CS5.5 to be run in magazines, and at the bottom of the page is the company's logo, with a drop shadow applied to it within InDesign. Nothing strange there. Upon exporting the PDF, I use the Press Quality settings which by default are made to create 300 dpi PDFs. The only changes I make in the settings is adding bleed and crop marks, I don't change anything that could affect the resolution or transparency settings. But still, the magazine's print-technician always replies that the shadows in my document have a low resolution.
    Up until now I have told him to not worry and run it anyway, and the results have been fine - I haven't noticed any problems with the quality of the print in the magazine. But it really annoys me that I keep getting these error messages - I want to create perfect PDFs! Why on earth are my shadows ending up as low resolution images?
    The only thing I can imagine might be a sign of an issue is under the Advanced-tab in my Export-settings. The Transparency Flattener section (which I, to be honest, am not quite sure what it is) is set to medium resolution, and is greyed out - meaning I can't change it to high resolution. Could this be what is causing it? And if so, how do I fix it?

    I don't spend a lot of time with Acrobat's preflight, but it looks like it assumes what the flattener preset will be at output even though it could be anything.
    The default Press Quality preset exports live transparency with the flattener grayed out as Medium and it looks like Acrobat preflight considers that even though nothing has been flattened yet. So, here I've made a 3" sqaure box and exported it with Press Quality and prefilght tells me it's roughly 200ppi (which by the way is plenty for a dropshadow):
    If I change the preset to High (set the Compatibility to 1.3, which lets you set the flattener to High, then reset compatibility to 1.4):
    Then Acrobat's preflight tells me the shadow will have more resolution:

  • Printing library or playlists

    Each time I try to print my library or certain playlists, I-Tunes completely quits and I'm reverted back to the Win Desktop. Any ideas? I have 500Mb of ram. There are ~ 3700 songs in my library.

    Open iTunes, go to File>Print and choose either Song Listing or Album listing, whichever suits your requirements best. You can also use the Theme drop down menu to include different options.

  • Resolution drops when using type effect over image

    Using a type effect over an image causes the resolution to drop below acceptable levels (211 dpi). The client has used a glow effect around text to knock back the image for better legibility. The image is 300 dpi, the text box is transparent with an outer glow effect. I matched the effect with a drop shadow using white but the problem still happens. I've increased the resolution of the image to 600 dpi, same problem. My transparency flattener presets: Raster / Vector Balance 100, Line art and text resolution 2400ppi, Gradient and mesh resolution 400ppi. Downsampling for PDF export is off. Printing postscript doesn't solve the problem. I've solved the issue by recreating the effect in Photoshop and turning the effect in InDesign off. This is in CS6, but I've opened the file in CC 2014 and have the same problem. Anyone have a solution?
    Thanks!

    The problem is within the digital file that's exported or postscripted to our PDF workflow. Preflighting in InDesign indicates no problems but the exported PDF in Acrobat shows the problem. Prinergy and Printready both fail the refine as our lowest acceptable limit is 280dpi. The PDF looks fine, the problem will be when the (offshore) printer preflights the PDF and sees the resolution problem. The issue is with the InDesign effect reducing the resolution - only in the area under the text box. All the images, text etc are CMYK. If I turn off the effect the PDF is all good.

  • Print Button on Drop-Down window

    Hello,
    our internal customer wants to be able to print topics from a
    drop-down window.
    This worked well with "RoboHelp for Word" and WinHelp output,
    but I fail to add the same functionality in a "Robohelp for HTML"
    (R 7) project with HTML Help (CHM) output. In fact the
    functionality seems to work (Topic is printed correctly), but in
    the window I immediately get a browser message that the content
    cannot be diplayed (topic disappears). The same is true for the
    "Copy" function (content is copied to windows clipboard but error
    message appears in the window). For the "Close" function the HTML
    help is minimized to the bottom tray. I added the following snippet
    <table x-use-null-cells style="background-color: #808080;
    width: 100%; height: 50px; border-style: 0;"
    height=50 width=100% bgcolor=#808080>
    <tr><td><implicit_p>
    <input type=submit name=button1 value=Print
    onClick="window.print();">
    <input type=submit name=button3 value=Copy
    onClick="javascript:CopiedTxt =
    ocument.body.createTextRange();CopiedTxt.execCommand('Copy')">
    <input type=submit name=button2 value=Close
    onClick="window.blur()">
    </td></tr>
    </table>
    What's wrong? Unfortunately I'm not fluent in Javascript :-(
    Regards, Pinkepunk

    Hi, Pete,
    Thanks for answering.
    > document.body.createTextRange();"
    The 'd' got lost when I formatted the post the forum.
    >onClick="hhctrl.Click()"
    HHCTRL does not seem to be know object in my project.
    The problem is not connected with the topic content. I
    created a test project from scratch with just two topics and the
    snippet in it: Same problem. The error page has the following
    address (right click):
    res://C:\WINNT\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm#mk:@MSITStore:C:\Apps\Test\Test%20Buttons \TestSnippets\!SSL!\Microsoft_HTML_Help\TestSnippets.chm::/DropDown.htm?button2=Schlie%DFe n
    It seems that the page name is confusing RoboHelp:
    Schlie%DFen refers to the German "Schließen" which includes a
    special character.

  • Book print quality, resolution, presets, etc...

    I just ordered my first book from Apple and was overall disappointed by the quality. Colors and contrast a bit cheap, apparent loss of resolution, some banding in the sky, etc... Nothing like what i get with my home printer (canon 9900).
    So i looked a bit more into the issue and wondered whether, among other things, there was not an issue with the Output PDF file. I tried comparing a picture at full magnification between aperture (from the original Raw file) and preview (from the Output PDF file) and i could indeed notice a huge difference in resolution, which was much lower on the PDF.
    Then i asked myself whereas there could be something to tune with the export presets. On the preset list (on the right of the export preset window), the "JPEG - Fit within 1024x1024" was indeed highlighted, with a DPI of 72 and quality of 8... So i created a "PDF Book" preset, with Jpeg - Original size, max quality (12) and set DPI at 300. And "selected" it...
    I recreated the PDF file, and much to my excitement, size moved from 150 Megs to 250 Megs. But deception quickly took over as a close look at a picture within the new PDF showed a similar loss of resolution, with color and micro-contrast having slightly shifted compared to first PDF.
    Final test, to be sure that i was not comparing tomatoes and, well.. apples, i created a jpeg file from the raw file with that same "PDF book" preset. And in Preview it looked just like the Raw in aperture, much better apparent resolution when viewed at full size than what i got from the PDF.
    Sorry for having been a bit longish, hope ur still with me
    Here are my comments/questions :
    - As for the comments, i concur with other previous posts on the erratic character of the apple book output. I would not at that stage recommend it to anyone who has a need beyond sharing vacation or party pics with friends or family. For reference, this book was ordered in Japan.
    - Now my test leaves me with as many questions as answers. Something i found out (maybe i was not the first one but i could not find previous post on the topic) is that Export preset settings do have an influence over the Output PDF. But still i could not get where i wanted to...
    - So my dearest wish today would be to have someone to tell me how i can have the same quality (apparent resolution, etc...) in the pics embedded in the PDF as the one i get when i export a file from aperture into a full size/full quality jpeg.
    Otherwise, you can't even use the cool book edition tool of Aperture, and you are just back to going into Adobe illustrator directly...
    Thanks for your comments and answers.
    YM

    I've only printed "mini" books from Apple, and was actually pretty pleased at overall look, the res...the color and tonal matching, was surprisingly accurate as it was on screen in the book preview. But the mini books are really tiny, so resolution flaws, I would think, would be masked. I don't think I yet trust printing in a bigger size with Apple. Actually, I can't figure out how to, in Aperture, get a paper back, like the mini, at a larger page size. It doesn't seem to have that option. I won't buy iphoto 8 just to do that. I'll just go to Asuka or some other printer. But was wondering if I'm missing settings in Aperture.

  • Secondary Monitor Resolution Dropped with Mavericks

    After installing Mavericks (should have waited) my second monitor resolution has suddently dropped. It still claims to be 1080p but it is clearly not the same resolution as it was before and has been reduced.
    So annoying.
    Any ideas?

    Hi there,
    the same for me too. I'm using an external monitor from NEC with a native resulition of 1920 x 1200.
    The monitor is connected to a mac mini server from mid 2011 via HDMI.
    In OSX 10.8 the OS automatically selected 1080p as the best resolution which was not correct but I could choose it manually from the list of scaled solutions.
    In Mavericks the native solution of 1920 x 1200 has gone from the list. Only 1080p and 1080i are listed.
    This is very annoying.
    But:
    If I activate my apple tv as a second screen (new feature in Mavericks) all resolutions that disappeared with Mavericks are here again and working fine including 1920 x 1200. As soon as I disable the second screen feature the resolutions fade away...
    I just downloaded a command line tool for switching the resolution manually. This works until the machine is rebooted...
    Any tips / hints?

  • Printing Library

    Presently, I can get Itunes for Windows to print the album library only two ways:
    1 - By album title and artist.
    2 - By album title, artist and track list.
    Question - Is there a way to print the library by artist then album title?
    I.E. It would be so much easier to look up an artist's name and see what albums by that artist are owned ( I have 486).
    NCPlater's Asking.

    In the Print command, choose Album Listing and then set the dropdown to "List of Albums." This prints the albums sorted by artist, which sounds like what you want.
