Print progress bar slow in Reader 8 and 9

We have several users who recently began having issues with printing to our Xerox network printers with Reader 8. This is happening with even one-page documents... the print dialog box will appear fine, but after clicking print, it sits at the progress bar and the program seems to hang for a minute + until it's done. Some of the things I've tried include:
-rebooted printer
-ran all windows updates
-upgraded to adobe 9
-tried several different print drivers (pcl, ps and global)
-tried all suggestions from knowledge base article:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=333091&sliceId=1
-toggled all options in advanced print options > font resource policy
-tested on several different machines, same issue
-tested with different printers, same issue
On one machine, I uninstalled Reader 8 and tried version 7, which seemed to work much better.
I was told this is just a bug related to an update in the newer versions that may be conflicting with our Xerox printer drivers.
I'm not sure if I want to revert everyone back to version 7, so if anyone has any other suggestions... it would be much appreciated!
Thanks

Can you post screen shots of the signature status from Reader 8 and Reader 9 so I can have a clear understanding of what you are experiencing?
Thanks
Steve

• HP 8600 Pro Print Progress Bar

Prior to buying my HP 8600 Pro I had a Lexmark X9575 which, when printing,  displayed a wonderful print progress bar dialog which showed what percentage of a page was printed and told you which page you were on e.g. page one of a four page document. Just wondered if the HP 8600 Pro had something like that.
If not, is it something HP might consider when updating the software in the future please?

Hi,
You are most welcome. As mentioned above, HP Photo Creations has many more options. I've played around with it but for just printing photos, like many people do, a simpler product is the way to go.
Regards.

• Printing Progress Bar

Is there a way to turn off the printing progress bar?  It takes too long to be able to continue working when the bar is being shown.

first I don't agree with you in declaring the dialog in the method print because this method is called for each page (notice that it takes page number as argument).
So, you may declare the dialog and progress bar explicitly and update the progress in each call to print (or even, you may update the progress more than once in each call as you see suitable),
then your problem may occur because you do the printing in the EventDispatchThread (this will happen if you performed printing in actionPerformed() of a button, for example)
The EventDispatchThread is responsible also for updating the UI, so, if you perform printing in it, it will be busy in printing and have no time to update your UI, when printing is finished and the EventDispatchThread can update the UI, you will surely have removed the dialog.
if this is your case, try to make the printing occur in another thread
like this
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
         new Thread()
                   public void run()
                        // do printing here
              }.start();
}

• No progress bar when using IE7 and innerHTML

hello;
when I use javascript to:
document.getElementById(
"my_shockwave_container_div").innerHTML = my_object_embed_string
the progress bar does not work but instead just sits there on
the screen blank, even though the .dcr does load and does begin
playing when downloaded;
if I simply place the object and embed tags into the HTML as
a simple html document would normally be, the progress bar works;
furthermore, the progress bar works on Mozilla and IE6
regardless of the method I use;
any thoughts??

• Acrobat Print Progress Bar

Anyone know where the print progress bar went in Acrobat? Is there a preference to turn it back on? Seems that Acrobat 8 does not have it anymore...Please shed some light!
Thanks in advance!
-Rich

Hi Jon,
Thanks for getting back. No, it's not spooling quickly, I am printing a hi-res PDF with lots of photos in it, and it goes to my print spooler and the only way I know it is finished is by looking at my print spooler. There is no progress bar indicating that the PDF is printing (or that Acrobat is doing anything - the only way to know that Acrobat is doing anything, is to open my print spooler dialog box.).
I would like to try to find a way, if there is one, to get that back without going back to Acrobat 7.
Do you get a progress bar?

HELLO, Hello, hello..........is there anybody out there................

• Itunes progress bar is not moving and music won't play. I also have no audio from my laptop at all. Any ideas? I am running windows 8.

Have had no previous problems with iTunes but for past two weeks my I tunes progress bar is not moving and music won't play.
I also have no audio from my laptop at all. Any ideas? I am running windows 8.

I'm having the same incredibly frustrating problem. I have 50-60 GBs of music and now literally ALL OF A SUDDEN most of my mp3s won't play in iTunes. Of the songs that do play, many of them sound garbled (almost as if you were listening to them underwater). As others have noted, the songs do in fact play properly in other media players (VLC, MPC, WMP, etc).
I feel like I've tried just about everything but I can't seem to fix the problem. Nor have I been able to find any viable solutions after hours of scouring the internet. Here is a list of the steps I've taken so far, in chronological order:
1. Closed/re-opened iTunes
2. Re-booted computer
3. Uninstalled/re-installed iTunes
4. Tried deleting songs from iTunes library and then re-adding them, but after dropping files into the library they don't show up at all, iTunes refuses to import them
5. Downgraded from iTunes 8 to iTunes 7
None of these things have helped at all and I am amazed that even after completely uninstalling iTunes 8 and then installing version 7 I'm still experiencing the same problem. And, on top of things, I've found that iTunes 7 is not recognizing the ID3 tags for many of the songs it does import.
My apologies for the length of this post. I just want to be specific and provide as much info as I can so that maybe we can find a solution to this thing.
So, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• Missing Print Progress Bar--bug or feature?

Since upgrading to Acrobat 8 Professional (v. 8.1.2) on a Mac Intel Quad-core running OS X 10.5.1, there is no progress bar when printing. I only know that printing is done by hovering over the "stoplight" buttons and noticing when they become responsive again. (The window itself does not become active until I click in it.) It's as if there *is* a progress bar window somewhere, but it's not visible, and it's not giving up "front window" status when it's done.
Has anyone else noticed this behavior? It's not affecting function, it's merely annoying. But with the radical redesign of the interface from Acrobat 7 to Acrobat 8, I can't tell if this is a bug or a feature. Any insight will be welcome.
Thanks,
David Reiffel

I am new to this problem, having recently upgraded to Intel Macs from Acrobat Pro 7. There is another issue that seems to have been missed both in this thread and the other one referenced by David above. When the progress bar is on-screen, there is also a cancel button. So now you have the situation where Acrobat is unable to report how far through a print job it is and you are also disallowed from cancelling the job without resorting to a Force Quit... Now, that's the sort of usability I'd pay good money for! The problem doesn't occur using a PowerMac G5, so the functionality is there, it just doesn't translate to the Intel platform. Adobe Reader 9 also prints without a progress bar, so it looks like the problem is here to stay unless a fuss is made and this becomes a 'known issue'
I've raised this as a case with Adobe customer care on 1 September but this hasn't been addressed as yet. I'll post any follow-up I get here.

• Help - Grey wheel with progress bar on start up and then Macbook Pro turns of.

So i recently bought a Macbook Pro 13 inch (the lower end). While doing my research i found the smartest thing to have a relatively fast macbook was to increase the ram. I bought http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148345 and installed it in my macbook pro. After starting up the macbook, i got to my login screen. However, everytime the computer would try to start up to my account, i would get a blue screen and then be brough back to my login page for the account. I assumed that the RAM was not fitted properly since my research indicated that it was most likely the problem. I re-installed the RAM sticks with more force but to no avail. Then i even switched the RAM sticks while installing to make sure that either one of my new RAM chips was not faulty but after a while, my MBP refuses to start up. I get the grey apple logo, with a spinning wheel and progress bar. The bar goes a quarter length before the laptop shuts off. I then put it in the original RAM sticks, but the same problem. Apple logo, spinning wheel, progress bar and then powers off. Any suggestions or thoughts as to what may have happened? Thank you!

Last night the electricity went out and my power surge protector was not working so my iMac just force shut downed.
So, when the electricity came back i turned on my Mac but it is *Stuck in the Startup/Boot Screen with a Grey Apple Logo,a Empty Progress Bar with stays for 1 or 2 minutes and a small Spinning Wheel which would Spin Forver! I Have tried the SMC and Pram reset but no use, i have also tried to insert my OS X Lion 10.7 Installation disk and it would not load if i hold the C Key in the Startup, I Have Managed to go to Disk Utility Through "Recovery HD"  but the Volume "Macintosh HD" is Greyed out and Unmounted and i cannot repair it. There are some files that i'd like to Recover if there is a way to fix it without deleting files.
**PLEASE HELP ME FIX THIS!**
Details about the iMac:
iMac 21.5 Inch i think from Mid 2010,
OS X Lion installed maybe 10.7.2 or 10.7.3 (im not sure)

• After a reset of settings on IPad2 it turns "on" but i only get to the logo screen with the progress bar under it. so it turns on to logo then to progress bar screen then off. and repeats over and over

Well as I said in the "question", I did a reset of the settings on my IPad2. however when it powered back on from resetting. it lets the the logo screen with the progress bar under it. The progress bar gets about 1/4 of an inch from the left then stops. After a few mins Ipad shuts off then turns on to the logo screen, then goes to the logo/progress bar screen, does whats said above, then off. That cycle just repeats over and over. Any help with this would be appreciated.

• MacBooc Air slow on reading and transferring file on a Windows NT network

I have McBook Air running OS 10.6.
I'm working in a company having a network and server managend by Windows NT.
Opening files on the server takes a long time.
Checking .pdf files take long time (seconds and seconds) to see the pre-view of the files. More time to open them.
I.e. using a PC windows based, tan take 1 sec; with my mac i need 10 secs. More bigger is the file, more is the difference.
a pdf file of 2 Mb takes 20 sec to show the preview only.
what can i do?

I like to add some additional information. I'm Running
Mac OS 10.6 in our company. The problem is that when we try to move a file from a Windows 2000 server to the new MacAir, the transfer speed is way to slow (350Kb/sec). I know that Macs running OS 9.x work just great accessing the Windows server, the speed is just like using a windows machine (this has been told to me from a friend).
The McAir is taking about 30 minutes to transfer a 100mb file.
Any possible solution?

• About progress bar and Photoshop

I have been reading a lot about how to make a progress bar in photoshop (scripting) and my conclusion is that it is not worthy. The only way to make a progress bar is by using Palette window but Photoshop does not support it. If we use a dialog window, since it is modal, it will freeze whatever your script is doing so, you cannot use it (how to track the progress of a script if the script is paused while the dialog is being shown?). Although Photoshop does not support Palette, there are two workarounds that would make it work and they are using either app.refresh() or waitForRedraw() (and undocumented function that seems to me to do exactly the same thing that app.refresh() does). But as the manual says, app.refresh() will slow down considerably your code. According to my experimentation, each time you call app-refresh(), your script will waste about 1 second (no matter how powerful your computer is). That is a lot of time! In practical terms, you would use app.refresh() only a few times so your progress bar could be refreshed only a few times during the whole duration of your script, still one second lost for each time you use it. In other words, there is no good way of making a progress bar in photoshop scripting.
My question is: am I right? Is there a way to code a progress bar in PS that would not delay the code unreasonably?

Since I wrote that post I've learnt that BridgeTalk is pretty sensitive - for instance to binary code: instead to let .toSource() functions that needs to go to the message, you'd better of wrapping them into a String literal.
True, AM is lightning fast compared to DOM! But I won't use BridgeTalk for a Palette if the Palette is needed just for a progress bar. Such a Palette will stay alive while your script does all the things it's supposed to do without the need of waitForRedraw().
In my snippets library I've found this one that might help:
* Create a progress window
* @param  {String}  title           = title
* @param  {String}  message         = message (updatable)
* @param  {Boolean} hasCancelButton = add a Cancel button (default: false)
* @usage          w = new createProgressWindow "Title", "Message", true
createProgressWindow = function(title, message, hasCancelButton) {
      var win;
      if (title == null) {
        title = "Work in progress";
      if (message == null) {
        message = "Please wait...";
      if (hasCancelButton == null) {
        hasCancelButton = false;
      win = new Window("palette", "" + title, undefined);
      win.bar = win.add("progressbar", {
        x: 20,
        y: 12,
        width: 300,
        height: 20
      }, 0, 100);
      win.stMessage = win.add("statictext", {
        x: 10,
        y: 36,
        width: 320,
        height: 20
      }, "" + message);
      win.stMessage.justify = 'center';
      if (hasCancelButton) {
        win.cancelButton = win.add('button', undefined, 'Cancel');
        win.cancelButton.onClick = function() {
          win.close();
          throw new Error('User canceled the pre-processing!');
      this.reset = function(message) {
        win.bar.value = 0;
        win.stMessage.text = message;
        return win.update();
      this.updateProgress = function(perc, message) {
        if (perc != null) {
          win.bar.value = perc;
        if (message != null) {
          win.stMessage.text = message;
        return win.update();
      this.close = function() {
        return win.close();
      win.center(win.parent);
      return win.show();

• Progress Bar and Errors on Startup

On startup I always have a progress bar while it is booting, It is like the Safe Mode one but Faster, sometimes.  Sometimes it goes very slow like the when I tried to repair my disk in safemode I booted my mac and it took like 20 minutes to turn on.  Sometimes on bootup I get a black screen untIil it is done.  I dont know why it does this, This is the Early 2012 Macbook Pro 15 inch.  I have bo warranty left and whenever I go to the Apple store they tell my a bunch of crap like its my fault then try to sell me a new computer so I cant get help from them.

Unless you are running Yosemite there should not be a progress bar during startup.

• ITunes store won't load. The progress bar freezes at about 50% and I get nothing but a white screen.

I'm running iTunes 10.5 beta 7 but this issue has been happening since I was running 9.  One day I clicked on a link for an app I saw on techcrunch and it pulled up in iTunes as being in the UK store.  I clicked ok and my iTunes hasn't worked since.  I can log into my account but can't access anything in the store or Ping.  I've googled this issue and found some similar sounding stories but none of the solutions have worked.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled, turned of the itunes store in parental settings and checked "except for iTunes U", I've uninstalled apple aplication suport and installed safari and every other option I have found and nothing has worked.
Sometimes if I let it sit long enough what looks like an unstyled version of the store comes up but is completely unusable.
Just to be clear, this has been happening since before I was running any beta software or OS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you gchin.
I emailed apple support and they got back to me, I did what he said and it's fixed! SOLUTION found- see below.
I said:
"I can't access the iTunes Store. When I click on it the progress bar stops at 50% and I'm left with a blank white screen (no error msg). I have uninstalled and reinstalled, run the iTunes diagnostics (it said all was ok), gone through all of the online help material and I've tried turning off my firewall. Nothing works. I can't sync my iphone either (stops on verifying iPhone so I think it's getting stuck on trying to contact the store). Plzz help."
They replied:
"Greetings from Apple iTunes Store Customer Support! I am ########.
