Print quality difference between iphoto and aperture...?

when ordering books, is there a print quality difference between using iPhoto and Aperture? or are they sent to the same lab?
it's possible i may have some setting wrong, but when i order a book using iphoto, i never really feel the quality is that great. it's good, i just feel it could be a lot better. the print quality sort of reminds me of newsprint, albeit high quality newsprint. similar sized prints made at home on my basic 3-in-1 printer look better.
thanks...

Previews are what you view on your display. When you import a photo into Aperture (and I'm pretty sure iPhoto as well), your computer automatically generates a preview for quick viewing. The original images are stored in your library, but it is the preview that you see.
In Aperture, you are able to set the size and quality of these previews. When sharing photos between Aperture and iPhoto, the process is as follows:
Let's say that your images are stored in Aperture, but you also want to be able to view them in iPhoto without taking up too much room on your hard drive. Essentially, if you were to import the originals into iPhoto as well, you would be storing two exact, yet separate copies of the same image on your hard drive. As you are aware, with large images (whether JPEG's, and especially RAW) this would put quite a tax on your storage capacity after not too long.
So, you have your images in one or the other (in this case Aperture), but you want to play around with them in iPhoto. What you can do, is open iPhoto, go to the File menu and then select, Show Aperture Library. This will open a window with all of the contents of your Aperture Library. You can then drag any images you want into iPhoto . The only thing is, you are not dragging the original JPEG's, but rather, the previews of those images. If you have those previews set to a lower quality (again for capacity concerns), you will only have lower quality and lower detailed images in iPhoto. These images might not be ideal, or even suitable for printing high quality prints. The previews that you generate in Aperture though can be adjusted to be extremely high quality with no size limits.
My thinking was that since you mentioned Aperture, it sounded like you had experience with working with it and with ordering a photo book through Aperture. I guess you were saying that you ordered via iPhoto, weren't happy with the quality and were wondering if Aperture created books were better.
Anyway, if this is the case, I cannot answer that for you. I have never ordered a book through Aperture. If the quality of your images is good, you should be able to get a decent product no matter where you order it from. There is not doubt that the materials used and the print shop that does the work makes a difference, but if your images are good, you should still get a decent product through iPhoto. Perhaps iPhoto isn't the way to go though if you have had poor experiences with them.
If you haven't used Aperture yet, I would highly recommend it though aside from the photo book aspect of this thread. It is a stellar product.
I hope this helps.

  • Difference between iPhoto and Aperture and photo storage

I'm thinking about upgrading from iPhoto to Aperture but I'm a little confused about the differences in the way photo edits are handled. The iPhoto to Aperture page says that Aperture stores photo changes in one photo rather than duplicating them, therefore taking up less space. BUT they also use a unified shared library. So how is it possible for Aperture to handle edits differently if the library is now shared between the two applications?

Aperture may save you some space if you choose not to generate previews, but then you won't be able to integrate with other apps.
As Terence Devlin says. But being able to manage the Previews is quite a space saver. In Aperture you can selectively generate previews only for the photos that you want to share with other applications, and you can specify the size and quality of the previews you want. iPhoto on the other hand will always create previews for all photos, and all in very high quality. In Aperture I delete previews for redundant photos and keep the previews only for my highest ratest photos that I am likely to share with other applications and want to use as a screensaver or slideshow.
If you share your photo library between Aperture and iPhoto and edit a photo in iPhoto, then iPhoto will add a preview for this photo, even if you disabled previews in Aperture.

  • Identified faces not merging between iphoto and aperture

I've been using both iphoto and aperture programs interchangeably to organize my photos and assumed that the work I was doing in one program was updating the other.  Most of the work has been merged between the programs, but I noticed today that the faces I've identified in one program has not merged to the other and I can't figure out how to get them to merge that information   I have almost 11,000 photos and it's taking me a huge amount of time to identify faces - definitely don't want to do it twice.  Any ideas out there?

Yes, it's enabled in aperture, thank you.  I've identified faces in both programs, but the ones I've id'd in iphoto are only showing for that person in iphoto.  If I look at the same person (face) in aperture, different photos show (just the ones I've identified while I was using aperture identify faces).  I thoiught they would merge and update back and forth, but they haven't.

  • Major differences between ACR and Aperture in red channel

    Hi!
I did some printing a couple of days ago and the result was really not acceptable. At first we thought it was the printer and then the process of saving the files from tiff mac to tiff pc. After that we hade a look at the channels and the findings explained exactly why we got the result. After that I decided to compare ACR with Aperture and here are the differences in the Red channel. Camera is Canon EOS 350D, ISO 200. The image is 25% zoom. I don't know if it is possible to post images but a link is perhaps good enough.
    http://www.d.kth.se/~vendelin/ap-acr.jpg
Do you have any ideas why Aperture gives me this result? If this is what I can expect from Aperture I'm afraid I'll have to use another raw converter for printing and that is a shame. The Image look fine in RGB but Red is destroyed and the printer in this case uses the red channel I'm told.
    kind regards,
    Edvard

Obviously that would be one way of doing it but
digging after every file in the aperture lib, opening
them in ACR, saving as tiff 16, importing to aperture
    is a to painful process.
If you have to do it for every image it would be annoying, but if you don't often have blown out color channels it would not be too bad...
I actually use Aperture myself by importing TIFFs because my camera is not supported in Aperture directly.
As you pointed out the dark
area is in fact not dark grey but black. No
information there what so ever. Is this a common
problem with aperture? Has anyone else experienced
this or is this image an extreme example?
I'm not sure why that would be, that's a different issue. I have not seen anything like that as Aperture seems to recover as much detail as any other converter.
Are you sure there is no detail there, if you raise exposure some? ACR is set by default to automatically change adjustments, you may want to try auto-level or something like it.
    <...>
Is this really a problem with Core Images or is it an
Aperture problem? Correct me if I'm wrong but
aperture uses the same RAW converter as iPhoto does,
in other words Core Images framework? I see why Apple
want Aperture, iPhoto and other to use their raw
converter that's built into the operating system but
when the performance is lacking perhaps the Aperture
team should consider to build one for them selves?
    <..>
You are thinking about it backwards. What Apple is doing is to spend resources producing a pro level converter, which then every part of the system (including iPhoto) can use. If Aperture were going to build thier own RAW processor then why would you not want iPhoto to be able to use it as well?
And in fact that's pretty much what happened, before Aperture came out OS X RAW conversion was pretty mediocre. But after Aperture Apple spent a lot of resources improving RAW conversion and it's far better now - whcih also benefits iPhoto.
Is there any form of modified RAW converter for OS X
I could use to replace the one shipping default? I
would do anything in order to keep using aperture for
    prints also.
Sorry, there's no way to swap out the OS decoder.

  • Quality Difference Between Source and Program Monitors

    Hi,
Hopefully somebody might be able to shed some light on my problem... I am working with a QT file in PP CS5 which is an animation created in AE CS5.
    File Details:
    Type: QuickTime Movie
    File Size: 507.4 MB
    Image Size: 1920 x 1080
    Pixel Depth: 24
    Frame Rate: 25.00
    Total Duration: 00:01:00:00
Average Data Rate: 8.5 MB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0
Now when I view the footage in my Source with window (at 100%) it looks nice and crisp, bright and vibrant. When I view it in the Program monitor (at 100%), at both pre and post render stages the footage looks jagged, pixelated and much less vibrant, I've also noticed a slight colour shift as well.
I'm pretty new to PP CS5 - sorry if this is something really obvious or basic that I have overlooked!, but hopefully someone can help me out!
    Many Thanks,
    Neil.

    Neil,
The Source Monitor is a simple player (as is the tiny player window in the Project Panel), and plays directly from the AV file on the HDD, where the Program Monitor is displaying from the Timeline, and takes into consideration any decompression, any Effects, etc.. There are also several settings in the Program Monitor, that can affect the display, such as Quality (try on Highest), and whether one is displaying 1/2, 1/4, etc. Resolution. What are all of the settings in your Program Monitor.
Also, what form of MPE do you have enabled, and what is the make/model of your video card? At the same time, you might want to list your video driver number/date.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Do you feel a quality difference between PC and ipod?

When you play music on very good headphones... eg. sennheiser HD series... do you feel a big difference between playing a 128 or 256 kbps file on PC versus on ipod? I think I do, but I may be imagining it, or it may just be because of equalizer settings. Thanks!

While some have managed to hack things so that they can install OS X on a PC, the results have been not very reliable. Generally OS X has many part that do not function properly.
It doesn't work well because the Mac hardware itself is different from what is found in any other Intel-based computer. Even the CPU's & support chips are not off-the-shelf Intel parts but variants optimized for Macs that are not available to other computer makers or to DIY enthusiasts.
This is probably why for a time in 2007 the 'fastest Windows notebook on earth' was a MacBook Pro, as tested by PC World, a fact touted for a while in Apple TV ads. (It lost that title to a more conventional Wintel laptop about a month later, but the new champ cost over $5000, had "almost nonexistent" battery life, & weighs over 11 pounds, which should give you some idea of the advantages an Intel-Apple collaboration has over the competition.)

  • Difference between iPhotos and "Pictures"

Can someone explain why some pictures show up in Pictures and iPhotos and which ones I should keep?

Photos only go into iPhoto if you import them. It could be that ImageCapture, the program that interfaces with your camera behind the scenes, is set to put the images it downloads into Pictures and not iPhoto.
Somewhere along the line you set that behaviour.
What are you using to take your pictures, and where do you want them to go?

Are there any differences in viewing quality between using iDVD or DVD pro?

What I need to know if it is a dramatic different in quality that I should use DVD Pro instead of iDVD.
If you want a DRAMATIC improvement in quality, shoot sharp, high quality content like Hollywood (usually on film) and have it compressed by high quality hardware encoders.
There is a good reason Hollywood DVDs look better than iDVD/DVD Studio Pro DVDs.

  • Printed color difference between Pages and Adobe InDesign.

    Dear members:
I have created documents in Pages that I later decided to re-create in InDesign.
One problem I noticed is the fact that colors printed on paper don't look the same. I basically copied the RGB values used in Pages for the different colors and used these same values in InDesign. Although on screen colors look the same, on paper they look quite different. In case this information is important I am using an Epson printer model R1800.
    Any ideas ?
Thank you again for your help.

  • Odd size difference between iPhoto and Finder

I've just noticed something rather odd. In finder my iPhoto Library is calculated at 94.43GB, and yet when i look in the bottom left info window it says 61GB - i've ensured that I have looked at the library as a whole and have emptied trash, but i'm still left with a 30+GB differential.
    Anyone got any thoughts?

    Nothing odd about it.
The iPhoto Window reports the resulting size of a folder if you exported into it, all the current images, in their current version.
The Library in the Finder reports the size of the package: All those originals, all those modified photos, the database files, thumbnails, faces thumbnails, caches and various other support files.

  • Whats the Diffrence between Iphoto and Aperture?

I know Aperture has a lot of better editing/organizing techniques but Is that all? Or is there a main reason people get Aperture that I'm not sure of? (and even in Editing how much better is it exactly?)
    Thanks
Sorry I might be a bit of a nuisance But i was just curious.

  • Image quality difference between timeline- and clip monitors

I've just captured dv into fcp4.5 and got surprised that I got the unrendered red line indication in the timeline when dragging it down from the clip monitor.
However, I rendered it but in timeline viewer the quality was bad like it was a field error. Contures were uneven etc.
The video in clip monitor has perfect quality.
I wish to find out a solution with this to learn something from it, rather than just re-install FCP wich normally puts things right.
    Big thanks for advice /Erik
    G4 1.2   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1.8GB RAM

Thanx Jim, the compression was for some reason changed to none, now I changed it back to DV-PAL.
I suppose this compression doesn't affect the final export?
If I'd export with the DV-PAL compression (Ialways export with none) would that degenerate the video again or just read in the same trax so to speak?

  • Quality difference between Windows and Mac

    Well, that's the problem:
The same song, (Skull and Crossbones by Klaus Badelt), played under my Mac partition or under my Windows partition is sounding different.
I thought the speakers were broken, but it's not that. Under the Mac iTunes, it sounds horrible, it's distorted and compressed. Equalizer is set the same (Classical), the file is the same, same machine, same application (iTunes 7.6.2), everything is the same. Except the library size. Under Mac it's 13.4 GB, under Widnows only a 100 MB...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Neither version of iTunes will make jewel cases.

  • Missing photos in both iPhoto and Aperture

I recently upgraded to Aperture 3.1.2 and transferred all my photos from iPhoto 8.1.2. In total I transferred about 15000 photos from my iPhoto library. I noticed some photos were missing in Aperture. After opening iPhoto again, some photos were missing there (although the thumbnail was present). I tried restoring my iPhoto library but that did not restore the photos. I BELIEVE between iPhoto and Aperture I have all my photos but I can't be entirely sure. Does anyone have anyone out there have any ideas of what I can try? I already rebuilt my iPhoto library and that just helped identify what photos I am missing in iPhoto.

This definitely sounds like and iPhoto and/or backup problem.
How was the backup done? If it was with TM (or another incremental backup program) did you check an earlier backup?
If you restored the iPhoto library from backup and the images were still missing I'm afraid there isn't much that you can do.

  • IPhoto and Aperture sharing a library

I want to use Aperture 3 while my wife uses iPhoto on the same computer. We have a gazillion photos in the library and I want both programs to be able to access the same photos. I've imported the iphoto library to Aperture and everything's fine.
The question is: when I import new photos into the library (via iphoto), will both programs recognize the new imports, or do I need to constantly re-import the library into Aperture for it to recognize new additions to the library?

The relationship between iPhoto and Aperture is not dynamic. Updates to one library are not available to the other.
So, yes, if you add to the iPhoto Library you will also need to add to the Aperture Library, and vice versa.
If you use a Referenced Library in iPhoto (which I do not recommend) and Referenced masters in Aperture then you might be able to automate the process somewhat with Automator and a watched folder system.
For updating Aperture with new imports to iPhoto you can drag the new Events over to Aperture using the File -> Import -> Show iPhoto Browser command. Note that this will always mean Managed Masters.
