Print sharing Ubuntu & Mac OS X

Hello everyone!
I need some help from the experts! I have an hp LaserJet connected to a PC running Ubuntu. Printer works with the PC, and I just made it available to the network. Then I went to a Mac and tried to reach it via CUPS, but probably I'm skipping a step somewhere. I'm trying to reach it with the IP address of the ubuntu computer and pointing to port 631. However it can not reach the server. It's says access is denied.
Can someone please tell me what is missing and whether I should change the cups.conf file in both computers?
Thanks!
MiniMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Thank you Greg,
Unfortunately I don't habe a KDE printer wizard, so I went to modify the cupsd.conf according to two sources that I found on the web:
http://linuxprinting.org/~till/printing-tutorial/tut.html
However, whenever I do that change, the printer stops working on Ubuntu, and of course then it is not recognized by the Mac neither. That happens irrespectivly whether I restart the CUPS daemon or not.
Anyway, with the original cups.conf it works just fine for the ubuntu... But I'm not able to see it on the Mac.
I'm really confused now, I don't understand why the changes in the cups.conf prevents the local machine to recognize the printer.
Thanks again!

  • How to create print sharing for Mac and PC computers

Hello~ I hope someone can answer these questions... Thanks!
We are a small design office. We have trouble printing recently after we upgrade our Mac OSX v10.4.
    We have:
2 PC computers (Window XP Home Edition)
    1 Power Mac G4
    1 Power Mac G5
    1 PowerBook G4
1 Epson Stylus Pro 4000 large format printer
    1 hp laserjet 3030 fax/copier/printer
We used to transfer the PC files to the server and print from Mac. We were able to print with 'shared printer' if one Mac computer is connected to the printer. After we upgraded 1 Power Mac G4 to OSX v10.4, we can no longer use the 'shared printer' for the other Mac computers. We cannot find the printer under 'shared printer' in the Adobe application, such as Illustrator and Photoshop.
We would like to set up the print sharing system that both Mac and PC computers can send files to the prints without putting files to the server or switching the printers. Can anyone help please? Many thanks!

There are a couple of disadvantages with formatting a
disk as FAT32. Firstly, there is a limit on the file
size for FAT32. I think it like 2 GB so if you
capturing video the results will probably not fit
into this file limit. Secondly FAT32 will not be
bootable. I alway clone my system to a backup disk as
bootable. That way if anything goes wrong with my
system, I can just boot from my backup disk and fix
    it.
The problem with doing this though is that the drive will not be usable with Windows (which was in the original posting) unless you use the third party MacDrive software on the PC.

  • Windows xp printer sharing to Mac OS 10.6.7

    Hello everyone?
Im mac newbie. My small office network have 2 computer. 1 computer is a windows XP and another one is macbook. My network solution is wireless. I'm installing and configure canon mf4680 printer on my windows xp computer. Then sharing and I wanna add printer on my macbook. I was following this guide
    http://macs.about.com/od/macwindows/ss/sharewinprinter.htm
all installation and configure succesfully done, but im printing on macbook i recieved error code. This error is printer driver error -50 etc, sorry im missed.
Pls help me guys how can install sharing printer on my macbook?
    Pls apologize my english skill

Unfortunately it is not possible to use the Canon MF series from a Mac when the printer is being shared by Windows. This is due to limitations of Canon's UFR2 driver for OS X.
But if your wireless router has an Ethernet port then you would be able to print from the Mac and from Windows if the MF4680 Ethernet port was connected to the Ethernet port of the wireless router. All the printer will require is an IP address, which the router can assign automatically (DHCP). If your wireless router does have an Ethernet port and you need information on how to set the MF4680 to DHCP then please reply.

  • Problems with file/print sharing between macs

I just recently created a network between my mac pro and my imac. I discovered that the only way that I could share files/printers between the two is if I shut off the firewall on both machines. If I let the firewall 'allow only essential services ie, file and printer sharing, the machines would see each other and the printers, but would not allow either to connect. Any suggestions?

    Thanks a lot Frank.
The firewall has always been disabled, since I baught my iBook.
There's two issues, the irc app and the videocam app.
Guess the videoapp is an easier issue. The port is 2000-2002
The irc application is I think a little more complicated, it has two settings in the prefs file (the app is IRCLE):
    1. In the DCC prefs I flagged the "ADSL, Airport, IPNetRouter and have flagged the auto configure for the Public IP Number (151.51.138.131).
    2. There is also a Firewall prefs. I haven't done anything with this. There's an areal called "Ident Settings (OS X only)". There one can flag the "Run Ident on a different port than the usual 113" If one flags that, then you can choose the port (it says it must to be 1024 or greater). "Note: you may need to change your firewall rules to make ident work this way, redirect incoming ident data for TCP port 133 to the port set above"
    Does this make any sense?
    Thanks a lot again, really,
    Emmanuel

  • Connect Macbook to printer shared on Mac from a different subnet

I have 2 printers shared from a Mac Mini (OS C 10.8.4) and I need to setup a Mac on a different subnet to use them.  The Mini already has shared folders that I can access from either location.  The printer only shows up when I am on the same subnet as the Mini.

    Read about Bonjour sharing:

It will help us to give better answers if we know the printer models.

  • Printer Sharing with Mac on a Windows dominated network

    Hey guys,
So basically, for the past few weeks I've been trying to get my printer connected through the network so I can print wirelessly. Basically, from my research, I need to get my Mac connected on the "homegroup" of the Windows network. However, when I try to connect, it asks me for a username and password. My computer doesn't have a password -- and I don't want to put one because it's a shared computer. Is there a default password? Or am I forced to put a password on that computer?

If a Windows computer was sharing the printer that you want to connect to, then this would be the correct action to take. But if the printer is networked, either wired or wireless, and not shared by a Windows computer then you could connect your Mac directly to the printer if you connect to the same network.
As for the "homegroup" this is a WIndows only setup introduced with Vista. Your Mac cannot connect to a homegroup. So do mean workgroup?

When you want to connect to a Windows shared printer you will get prompted to enter a Windows username and password before you see the shared printer. So you do not enter your Mac user details. Have you been provided with a Windows account you can use?

  • HP printer shared between Mac & PC

After searching the forums I am having to post.
I have a Deskjet 5550 connected to the mac.
I cannot get the printer to print from the PC.
I know they see each other as I am able to access the PC files from my MAC.
I am in the process of making the switch so if you wouldn't mind dummy up any suggestions.
I must be missing a major step??

Major step - on the PC, use a color postscript driver (Apple Color LaserWriter is good). This sends postscript from PC to Mac - the Mac print queue expects postscript input.

  • Windows - Mac Printer Sharing???

I have a perfectly working HP Photosmart 7150 connected to my Windows XP PC. I also have a wireless network running through my house. I have enabled Printer Sharing and other Windows XP (and Vista) Laptops can print to it wirelessly. How do I do this for my new Macbook?
If I connect it via USB cable, the Macbook instantly recognizes it and printing is immediately possible. I do not know why this is not happening wirelessly....? It can't even detect the HP Photosmart Printer over the wireless network. "Printer Sharing" is ticked in the Sharing Preferences in my Mac. The printer is not in "Print and Fax" nor does it show up when I click the + sign.
Help me, please. If you need any other details, please ask.
HP says HP Photosmart 7150 drivers are pre-installed in Tiger. However, the model name is not listed when I have to choose Make and Model. Why? How can I fix this?

Shawn, please do some reading here in the forum.
The Photosmart driver doesn't show up for network printing because it was written for USB only.

  • Printing to a Mac shared printer from windows 8

How can I print to a Mac shared printer (OS: 10.8.2) from my Windows 8 PC which is using the same Apple network?
    Matthias

I have tried using Bonjour on for Windows on Win8 however while it finds the printer and can add it no problem whenever a job is sent to the printer a blank page is printed. The Win8 machine can print to the printer fine if directly connected and the same driver is used when printing via Bonjour so one can only assume it's a "communications" issue between the Win8 machine and my Mac Pro which is sharing the printer.

  • Is it possible to print on a mac to a shared printer on a Windows desktop?

I have my windows XP desktop connected to a new HP printer which prints fine. I have my DSL internet connection split by using a router and on one port I connect it to my Airport express. The internet on both machines works fine. However, can I print from my powerbook to the printer that is connected to my Windows XP desktop? Note that the powerbook is connected to the network wirelessly via Airport Express which in turn is connected to my wired router. Thanks

    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

The short answer is yes. You must share the printer on the XP desktop and then add the printer on your powerbook in System Prefs->Print & Fax->Set up printers->Add and from the drop down list select Windows Printing. Rendezvous may work as well. I'm currently doing this on my network. I assume you can access files on your pc from the powerbook with the current setup. This doesn't have much to do with printer sharing other than providing verification the powerbook and pc can talk to each other.

  • Printer Sharing from a PC to Mac

I have a PC set up with a printer and would like to share it over Ethernet LAN to a PowerMac G4 and iBook G4, I've tried setting the PC side of things to share the printer but the Mac can't find it.
The PC is also sharing it's Internet connection over the LAN.

I don't think I've gotten Printer Sharing AND Internet Sharing to work together, but haven
t tried in a year or so...
Might go to Apple>Downloads and try Bonjour For Windows... pretty good at advertising services available... as well as opening the proper Ports for things.

  • Printer shared from my Mac is not seen from a PC using Bonjour for Windows

I am going nuts here, hope someone can help.
I have a Canon multi-function printer (MP830) attached via USB to a Mac G4 (with Mac OS X Tiger). At one time, I had it set so a Windows 2000 PC could print to it but deinstalled it after some printing issues, and have been unable to get to working again. The machines are connected together via a Netgear router. As far as I know, everything is the same as it was before, yet I cannot get it to work as it did.
    - The printer works fine from the Mac.
    - If I connect the printer to the PC, it works fine.
    - On the PC, using Bonjour for Windows, I cannot see the printer attached to the Mac but I can see, and print to, an Epson printer that is attached to a different Mac.
    - And from the second Mac, I am able to see -- but not successfully print to -- the Canon printer. The print job stays in the queue of the second Mac and says "Unable to connect to SAMBA host, will retry... Error: Connection failed with error."
    - I have tried:
-- de-installing and re-installing Bonjour for Windows and the Canon print drivers on the PC
-- and have de-installed and re-installed the Canon drivers on the Mac
-- I have removed and re-added the Canon printer on the Mac. Printer Sharing is on, and this printer is checked in the Sharing box.
    Any suggestions?

Thank you. Those are beautifully written procedures.
Looks like it's a network issue. I reach the step, "Adding a printer using the wizard":
You must enter the following URL, you must use the Queue Name you noted down earlier
    http://<IP address of Mac>:631/printers/Queue Name
    which I do, entering
    http://192.168.0.4:631/printers/MP830
and I get the following error:
"Could not connect to the printer. You either entered a printer name that was incorrect or the specified printer is no longer connected to the server."
    And then I am toast!
Using the other procedure, I simply don't see the Mac's printers in the Bonjour Wizard's "Browse for Bonjour Printers" window.
Not sure where to go from here -- any ideas?
The Mac's IP (set via DHCP) is 192.168.0.4, subnet mask 255.255.255.0. The PC is 192.168.0.5, I can't find the subnet mask.
Pretty sure it's a network config issue, especially isnce I can Bonjour to my other Mac.
    TIA...

  • Printer sharing stopped working on two macs

Sonos support i, n diagnosing a problem on my primary iMac , asked me shorten my system name on the iMac that controls my HP printer. I did  that. As a result, the printer sharing on my Mac Air ceased to work.Sure enough, the Mac Air was looking for the old IMac name. So I changed the " system name" for shared printing on the Mac Air. But that doesn't seem to restore shared printing. Anyone got ideas on what else I have to do ?

I recommend deleting your existing printer from System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, and adding it again. Better yet is to "reset the printing system" as described here: Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system
After you do that you will need to add the printer again according to the instructions here:

  • WindowsXP printing on a Mac shared printer

Hi. I've seen a lot of posts on a Mac printing to a Windows printer, but not the other way around.
My wife has brought home a windows laptop and she wants to print on our Mac network. I have an iMac set up as a printer/music server with a laser printer connected to it. the iMac is running 10.3.9.
The driver for the printer is built in to XP, but when I try to add the printer, the XP machine doesn't see the shared printer.
On my iMac print server, I have printer sharing on, and Windows file sharing is on too. My Macs have no trouble seeing the printer. It is on an ethernet network, and I've tried entering the IP address of the print server with no luck.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mark

  • Printing to a printer shared on a PC from a Mac

I have a PC running Windows XP Pro connected to a home network.
I am trying to print to a Canon S530D printer shared on that PC.
I can see the printer in the printer setup utility on my Mac but I don't know what to choose as the printer model, generic doesn't work. It seems windows needs to use specific drivers to print to, as when you connect to this printer from other PCs it installs the drivers from the one hosting the printer.
Moving the printer onto the Mac isn't an option.
Any advise is extremely helpful to me.

Even though the printer is attached to the PC, the Mac is the one sending the print commands, so the Mac drivers must be installed on your iMac for it to print.
I learned how to do this with the help of iFelix and Joel Shoemaker on their excellent websites.
If the Canon drivers found HERE do not work, try the open-source drivers. There is a great page HERE that helped me with my HP printer.
