Print  . . .  spinning beachball

I already posted a similar question a few weeks agao, but I’m doing so again in hopes that someone may be able to suggest a work around or fix.
We used to use AW to keep track of invoices for our magazine -- it worked well even though some files were over 200 pages long (each page being a separate invoice.) Since Apple has now abandoned AW, and since we started to experience some issues, we switched our invoices to Pages. But its so frustrating because I get the spinning beachball every time I print a section of a long Pages document.
We have a long Pages file that we use to keep track of invoices. Every page is a separate invoice. I have a new IMac (20 inch, 2.4 Ghz and I Gig of ram). Pages opens and runs fairly fast, but when I try to print, I get the spinning beachball for 20 - 30 -40 seconds or so every time. This is VERY frustrating!!
An earlier reply advised that Pages is designed to load load an entire document when you hit the ‘print’ command, not just the pages that you want to have print. This makes no sense to me and it is what is causing all the problems.
On top of this, in AW you could create a new document and tell the program to start the first page at another page other that page 1 (say #200 for example.) Even though Pages ‘replaced’ AW, you cannot do this. Again, this makes no sense to me.
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance for your time.

Hello
The program was not modified since your first question.
So, there is no reason for a new behavior.
Pages is slow. My guess is that this is due to the way it treats XML.
As we are users trying to help other users we can't change that.
_Go to "Provide Pages Feedback" in the "Pages" menu_, describe what you wish.
Then, cross your fingers, and wait _at least_ for iWork'09
It seems that Apple never understood what we where doing with AppleWorks and designed iWork for a size of documents smaller than the one we are accustomed to.

  • Spinning beachball of death won't go away, iTunes always crashing

I've been having problems with my MacBook since updating to iTunes 8.2.1 a couple of weeks ago. After updating iTunes would hang on the spinning beachball and crash constantly- the application was totally unusable. I removed iTunes, reinstalled it and rebuilt my library. After that iTunes worked most of the time, but occasionally would get hung up on the beachball.
Over the past couple of days it's gotten much worse. I'm unable to have both iTunes and Firefox (or iTunes and any other application) open at the same time- I get the spinning beachball and have to force quit everything. It usually takes several minutes for the force quit command to actually work. Today I downloaded a show from the iTunes store and iTunes crashed halfway through. I was able to re-open iTunes and get the show downloaded, but when I tried to open iTunes again several hours later I got a message saying something about how there was a problem and that my iTunes library has been renamed as damaged.
I removed and reinstalled iTunes again and now iTunes won't open at all. I don't know how to move forward at this point. I ran disk utility to check the permissions and there were a number of problems, but no matter how many times I click repair permissions they reappear. (Permissions differ on "System/Library/Components/AudioCodecs.component/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .) It's the same permissions issue over and over. I don't know how to fix this.
Does anyone have suggestions on what steps I can take? Right now my computer is very frustrating to use because I'm not able to use more than one application at once, and I'm not sure if this is because of the problems I've been having with iTunes, or if it's something else altogether. Has anyone been able to successfully resolve their issues with iTunes?

  • One possible reason for the spinning beachball with versions 10.0.2 trying to play/see anything

    Hi there.
I discovered today what is the reason for the strange problem I've been having with FCP X from 10.0.2+. The problem was that I just couldn't use it: I couldn't see any media in the canvas/preview pane, no matter if it was video, jpgs, psds, whatever. Trying to use or reproduce a project was just more of the same: a spinning beachball forever. At some point, from time to time, the black from the preview pane changes to a checkboard, but that was all.
    This happened in 10.0.3, 10.0.4 and 10.0.5.
I tried everything, removing the events, projects, and so on. The only thing that worked was to create a new user in my machine and use FCPX there. Everything seems to work fine there. I did that yesterday at 3am. Today I saw that the colors were off in that user, and I remembered that the calibration is not setup at the system level, but for each user, so went on to change the profile to use the one I did for my screen (I have my screens calibrated frequently). Voilá, now FCPX doesn't work anymore on the new user. The only change was the profile, so I went to System Preferences, selected the old (default) profile, and now FCPX works fine.
I don't know if the problem is my profile (I created it with ColorEyes DisplayPro, I don't have anything else right now to try to create a new one) or if the issue is with FCPX itself, as I have only had problems with FCPX related to the profile. In any case, the issue is now identified in my case, and even if I don't like to work in a non-calibrated screen, that will have to do for now.
I will try some other calibration software and see if the results are the same, but I thought of sharing my findings here in case someone is still having this issue.
Tomorrow that the 5770 arrives for my Mac Pro 1,1 I'll try to run it, also with the calibrated screen, and see what happens.
    HTH,
    Rodrigo

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean with "the profile is downstream from ColorSync"?
I'm willing to accept that there is something wrong with the way ColorEyes DisplayPro is making the profile, although if the OS loads it and uses it and doesn't complain at all - nor any other app I use - I don't see why FCP should have issues with it. But I'm willing to try some other app to create the profile for the screen and will do as soon as I can get my hands on some other.
Between lines, hopefully I'm wrong, but I read you are telling me that FCP doesn't support having a "typical" monitor calibration, usual in printing/photography/etc workflows, but only supports calibrated output through broadcast monitors, using third party hardware? And that in the Color screen settings I must not use any "user generated" screen profile?

  • When I try to open a file with TextEdit, I get the spinning beachball and the file takes almost a minute to open.

When I try to open a file with TextEdit, I get the spinning beachball and the file takes almost a minute to open. When I just start TextEdit everything is fine. Also when I log on with another account TextEdit works like a charm, even when opening an existing file.
What I have done so far:
    checked permissions in Disk Utility
    validated all fonts
    deleted all canon printer drivers
    deleted all preferences
Nothing has helped. Mail shows the same behavior as TextEdit. What else can I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Late 2008 Macbook Pro - Spinning Beachball - Why?

Over the last few months I've noticed a rapid decline in the performance of my macbook pro. I've used it to produce music on it without issues so it should still be quite a capable machine. At first I thought it might be my new WD 750Gb scorpio black hard drive but I've since reverted back to my original factory hard drive and the problem is the same. I have been using CCC rather than doing a fresh install so I don't know whether doing a fresh install will help. When I first started out I have leopard - is Lion or Mountain Lion (which I currently run) more processor intensive? I get this spinning beachball often when I'm not doing anything particularly heavy on the cpu. When opening apps and sometimes they don't respond and when I click launchpad sometimes the icons are blank until it has time to visually update them. Ableton often takes up to 5 mins to open but its usually about a minute or so these days. I've reparied all permissions, verified hard drives, reset my PRAM & SMC and tried 2 different hard drives. The battery is on 'replace now' and I notice it may be swollen as sometimes it intereferes with my trackpad functioning (clicking). My 250GB hard drive has about 40gb free on it too as I tried deleting things to free it up. The decline of the battery may coincide with the decline in performance but I can't say for sure if they are related.
I know my laptop is old now but it was working prefectly not that long ago. Is there any kind of log or screenshot I could post to give you more information to help?
    2.8Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1066 MHz DDR3 RAM -
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
    OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.4
    Thanks,
    Pete

My 250GB hard drive has about 40gb free
Empty the trash in the Dock as well as iPhoto’s trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).  Or transfer/move them all to a photo/movie storage site like ImageShack and Photobucket, 2 of the most popular  FREE  storage sites.
Get rid of all your video & music files you no longer view and/or listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.  Or transfer them all to a FREE video/movies and/or music storage site.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!  Better yet, download this FREE software called Find File.  This app puts Spotlight to shame (works w/Mountain Lion).
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs. Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or the system requirements for iCloud to store their "stuff.”
Dropbox is a free storage utility to check out.
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.   There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a *FREE* utility called Monolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

    Mac Performance Guide
    Slimming your hard drive
Rule of thumb: You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left.
    =======================
The battery is on 'replace now' and I notice it may be swollen as sometimes it intereferes with my trackpad functioning (clicking).
You should not be using your computer until the battery is replaced.  If it is indeed swollen and/or leaking, it will cause serious internal damage.
    Have you tried the following?
    Mountain Lion Recovery
Boot up from your computer by holding down the command+r keys.  This will take you to the recovery drive.
Select Disk Utility & hit Return.
In Disk Utility select the HD on the left & click on Repair Disk (bottom right).

  • USB External Drive Access and Spinning Beachball Crash

Over the last month that I have had my MacBook, the machine has experienced five spinning beachball crashes forcing me to manually power it down. First, the application I'm using freezes with the spinning beachball. Then, progressively other apps on the machine also lock up, where cmd-opt-esc and Dock-based force quitting do not respond. Eventually, the whole machine locks up, forcing me to hold down the power button to reboot.
I have been trying to figure out the pattern. It has happened once in OpenOffice.org, three times in TeXShop and once in Safari. I think the pattern across the five episodes is that the machine was trying to access my external USB hard drive to save a file (saving an already-open document in OpenOffice.org and TeXShop and printing a web page to a PDF document in Safari).
The drive is a Lacie 60GB USB drive, formatted AppleHFS, MacOS extended (journaled). Verification with the Disk Utility checks out fine, and I have in fact recently reformatted it to make sure.
I think the crashing problem is also related to this Console message, which recurs periodically:
    Jul 3 10:26:21 MK-MBCD kernel[0]: jnl: flushing fs disk buffer returned 0x5
I use the drive with my iMac G5 as well, where I have experienced no similar problems.
I would appreciate any feedback on how to troubleshoot this problem.
MacBook Core Duo / iMac G5 (iSight)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Thank you for your reply!
The Lacie drive did come with a second USB cable to provide additional power. I don't know how you feel about those as opposed to power adaptors to provide additional power. The USB power cable is at my work, so I will have to wait until I go in to grab it and try.
For now, I've done what Lacie support told me to do. From my description they suspected data corruption. So, I have reformatted the drive. In the process, I have turned off the journaling on the drive. That appears to have at least stopped the repeated console message about journaling failure.
Have you heard if MacBooks' USB ports are more underpowered than PowerBook G4s'? I use the same Lacie drive with my PowerBook with no additional power without any problems until I got the MacBook...
Thank you again for your help!

  • Spinning Beachball FIXED in iTunes 7.7.1

Congratulations Apple, iPod Touch spinning beachball issue when connecting to iTunes 7.7.1 has now been fixed, no more waiting 2-3mins for iTunes to recognise the Touch.

I had a problem with my iPod Video 60GB being updated when I updated to iTunes 7 and it got worse (had to wait a very long time for it to update my iPod if it ever did) when I updated to iTunes 7.0.1.8. Then I was advised that iTunes shouldn't have installed with the 'old iPod updaters' still installed, but it did. So I uninstalled the 'old iPod updaters' via 'Add and Remove Programs' in control panel. When I rebooted iTunes said the iPod software was missing and instructed me to re-install iTunes. After the re-install everything runs great. Presently, I only have iTunes 7.0.1.8, Apple Software Update on my computer and version 1.2 on my iPod.

  • Logic pro 9.1.8 won't load and I get spinning beachball of death

I have ML that is up to date and logic studio 9.1.8. When I try to run 9.1.8 (1700.67) (64-bit) I get to a splash screen that says "Searching for Audio Unit plug-ins (Apple:AUNetReceive).....and I have the spinning beachball of the death. I have to use force quit the app.
I have looked at a few threads and can't find my answer. Should I trash permissions or reload the app after I get rid of it using app cleaner?
OR is this a simple fix?
    Thanks in advance.
I haven't tried to open it on my MBP, but I assume I will get the same result.

Sorry to state the obvious (?) but you are not Updating/Upgrading.
You are DOWN grading if you are going from 9.1.8 to 9.0.2
If you want to downgrade, likely you will need to ERASE, and reinstall Logic.

  • My G4 keeps giving me a spinning beachball

I have a G4 tower running 10.4 something.  I can't get in to see which 10.4 because everytime I do anything the spinning beachball kicks in.  When it times out, the very next time I do anything it kicks in again.  I am attempting to install the OS again, but for some reason my external DVD drive isn't showing on the desktop.  I have tried ejecting the system disc several times and putting it back in again, but the computer won't recognize it.  I attempted to restart from the external drive, and a file with a ? on it was on the screen rather than the regular icon.
Is there any other way to get the system re-installed, or is there something else I can do to get rid of the spinning beachball?  I am using this computer as a back up to my laptop, and recently when my video card went bad on my laptop I discovered that my desktop G4 didn't work either.  I hated being without a computer for any length of time and I need to get the G4 up and running as a true backup.
FYI, I also have a smallish extra internal drive that does not have a system on it.  As I recall, I couldn't get them daisy-chained when I installed the extra internal drive.  I just use it as backup for my data.
Any ideas, besides dumping this computer and getting another (I have NO money)!!
    Thanks in advance,
    Carole

    >Apparently there are quite a few issues with this "slave" srive.  Could that be what is causing my apparently intermittant issues?
Indeed it can. Open Console in Applications>Utilities, any repeating errors?
    >Any ideas on how to get it to boot from (or restart from) the iPod?
Is this a USB or Firewire iPod? G4s cannot normally boot OSX from USB, only FW.
    >OOPS!!  I marked the wrong one "Correct Answer"!!
I like getting points here, (only about 1 in a 100 do so at times), but I hate undeserved points!
    >When I rebooted my G4 normally, it still didn't "see" the DVD external drive.
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAA36VPRAM/
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)

  • HT2506 I use Preview to edit photos, and would like to know if there are any Preview updates in the works. I find there is a problem with Preview crashing, or taking a very long time to "catch up" (spinning beachball of death) while I'm editing.

I use Preview to edit photos, and would like to know if there are any updates to this program in the works. It seems Apple is constantly updating its software, except for Preview. I find it crashes all too often, and also takes forever to "catch up" with me (as in spinning beachball of death) when I'm editing a lrge amount of photos. Yes, I know I should be using Photoshop or somesuch, but it's just too **** confusing, and I don't have the time to figure it out. Thanks!!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Since upgrade to 10.5.8, frequent temporary hangs (spinning beachball)

    Good day!
Since updating to 10.8.5 on my MacBook Pro (15" unibody design), I'm encountering frequent visits (every 5 to 10 minutes) by the spinning beachball which last for 30 seconds or so.
At first I thought something might be slurping up all the processor power, but Activity Monitor isn't showing anything. The one thing I haven't checked yet is whether it still happens if I'm not connected via AirPort. The incidents do not appear to be limited to apps using the Internet.
    Any great ideas? Thanks!

Been having the same issues happening on the same machine as you. I did this yesterday, and so far so good.
    1. Restart in safe mode (Hold down shift key when you hear the chime)
    2. Under Applications > Utilities > Disk Utilities, select your hard drive on the left column, and click "Repair Permissions"
    3. Once done, restart
It's been a day since I've done this, and no beachballs yet (fingers crossed)

  • Spinning Beachball of Death . . . why did I have to Force Quit ???

    Folks:
Last week I had an episode of multiple recurring "application not
responding" errors while trying to select and scroll down through a couple
hundred pages of text in a manuscript of approx. 1.8 MB in size in my word processor, Mellel. As I scrolled down about half way the spinning beachball started spinning and the scrolling process became slow, sluggish, and then unresponsive . . . . I force quit and repeated another 2x to no different response. Finally did "select all" to whole doc and then had to go in to the few pages that I had originally not wanted to select and change them to back to what I wanted . . . a little bit "bassakwards" but I got it done the old fashioned way. Now, when I attempt to "save edits" as I'm going thru my doc the beachball will spin for different periods of time. This is mostly an all text doc with just two (2) photos that have been "inserted" into the doc--seems like the photo's are smaller files than the original, and about 250 pp.
So, the question is is mr Mel (Mellel) trying to tell me something about my system; is this perchance a sign that Macinto II (the 2nd HD in the iBook) is coming close to its ultimate demise? A few years back I began having "issues" with mr Mel that eventually were shown to be signs of the end of Macinto I (named after the famous Seminole Indian chief who fought the US Army to a draw in the Everglades). I had just run the Apple Hardware test just a few days before this
recent episode all happened and it seemed to be OK. But it has been mentioned
here that mr Mel is "processor intensive" and could be just testing the limits
of my 2nd HD??? OR is the test over and all that is left is the funeral pyre for
    Macinto II??
Would essentially a 2MB Mellel file be too large for my 933 MHz G4 iBook
    with 640 MB DDR SDRAM running Mellel 2.2.7 (build b9) on 10.4.11 . . . to handle
even if it was totally in fighting condition?? Or is the probably 3 year old HD
being brought to expiration by having to deal with running the features that are
brought to the table by mr Mel??
    Thanks for any thoughts,
    eep

Word processors typically load a large portion of a file into RAM for editing. When more of the document is needed it pages out the unneeded portion and reads more of the document into RAM. So in practice no document is too large. None of your "surmises" would seem to make sense.
A more likely scenario is disk corruption or file corruption assuming the hard drive isn't failing. Continued forced shutdown of the computer is a sure fire way to corrupt a hard drive if not cause it fatal damage.
    I suggest reading the following:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. CloneTool Hatchery (Shareware)
    12. Clone X (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.

  • What's with the spinning beachball in iTunes recently? Is it just us?

Since sometime in June (2009), I've noticed strangeness in my iTunes - mainly on my home computer, an Intel iMac G5 (purchased Dec 2008) with iTunes music stored on a Firewire 800 external hard drive (SimpleTech 1TB). We have two iPod Classics (120 GB) set up for manual syncing and almost anytime we drag and drop music from iTunes to the iPods, the beachball will spin from 20 seconds up to probably a minute. The music library is about 250 GB, which I guess is pretty large but we never noticed anything until recently. It's extremely frustrating. I know that sometime recently I had to force quit while iTunes was waiting to receive Genius info - it was hung up for almost a half hour and I figured I would just start from scratch, but that didn't seem to make a difference... I'm still spending lots of time waiting for the spinning beach ball to stop... Any ideas?

OK. So I figured out that I can start up using my Leopard install disc and than run Disk Utility>Disk Repair. (Unplugged all peripherals to be safe.) The result: It says my HD is fine.
Which brings me back to square one. I'm having one primary problem that's maddening. If I drag and drop songs from iTunes 8.2 to my iPod Classic 120GB (set for manual sync), I am greeted with a spinning beachball for some amount of time - typically 30 seconds to a couple of minutes. Strange.
This has never happened before and I'm pretty OCD about keeping my 250GB-ish iTunes library clean and organized. The only third party app I'm using is iVolume 2. I'm not sure what to do except wait and see if a future update will fix this. Anyone else having a similar problem?

  • Spinning beachball on login/authentication, but only when connected

Since installing a new router (Linksys WRTP54G) and Airport Express (in WDS mode), I get the spinning beachball of death when logging in after sleep, switching users, or authenticating on a wireless iBook G4 (OS X.3.9). I've waited for many minutes, but the beachball doesn't go away. If I turn off Airport, everything works fine. I don't have this problem on my other wireless laptop (Powerbook G4).
Below is an excerpt from the iBook system log in case it's helpful.
Thanks in advance for any help.

You might have to update your Airports Firmware and

Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't updated my OS, but I did update the Airport Express firmware (to v6.3). Unfortunately, I still get the spinning beach ball.
    Any other thoughts?

  • Spinning beachball of death issues

I have 2,250+ cards in my address book along with 9 groups - I'm starting to notice the spinning beachball of death occurring for a second or so at a time every time I edit an entry, search or move entries into groups.
It occurs no matter how many other apps are running. Am I reaching som ekind of threshold or is there another issue I need to investigating?
Thanks in advance for your time.

Another user with a similar problem has tried some things that indicates this could be a system-wide issue that has nothing to do with the actual contents of the Address Book database. You may want to try some of the things I’ve suggested there in case any of them work for you:
