Print Text File in NW 3.12?
I have to admit some ignorance regarding NetWare printing, so my
apologies in advance...
I work for a document management company, and am trying to find a
solution for a customer running a fairly archaic, DOS 6.22-based
application that utilizes a NetWare 3.12 server for file and print
services. My need is to retrieve print output from their application,
in the form of a text file, and then reprocess it for automated faxing
through a fax server device.
My problem is this: their application seems to print directly to a
printer by defining what it calls a "network port" (which seems to map
to a spooler, 0 through 5) or LPT1, and by referencing a printer
definition. As far as I can tell, the files that are deposited in the
print queue are byte streams, i.e., they're not human-readable (they
have extra characters that I'm assuming are control characters). They
therefore aren't usable by my print distribution software.
I've tried using CAPTURE to send to a text file, but the application
seems to conflict with the command. If I set CAPTURE, then start the
application and send a job to LPT1, the application returns an error
that the printer is unavailable. Upon exiting the application the port
is no longer being captured (although I've tried all of the options I
can think of to keep it so). Oddly enough, the application does
successfully print a text file to LPT2 (for a barcode printer), which
is CAPTUREd via a command in the system autoexec.bat. This is done a
different part of the application.
If anyone can help me figure out a way to generate a text file in this
environment, or to work with the print file that's currently being sent
to the queue (e.g, can it be translated somehow to a simple text file?),
that would be much, much appreciated. This customer is in a tight spot,
with an unsupported application that they can't presently afford to
upgrade. My solution would save them enough money over time to replace
the system.
Again, thanks in advance for any help!

If the Dos app has no print drivers included, then indeed it is relying
on NW and PRINTDEF/PRINTCON to do the formatting stuff. That must have
already been set up for it to be successfully printing now, it's just a
matter of adding a definition that doesn't do anything to the print text.
>In fact, given my ignorance of the NetWare environment, I'm not sure
how the term "driver" even applies, unless it would refer to the
printer definition.
I was referring to a driver within the Dos app, nothing to do with
NetWare. For instance Word Perfect for Dos came with Dos drivers for all
sorts of printers, one of which was a generic text driver.
>I wonder: is there a setting in PRINTDEF that could be changed for one
of the printer configs that would influence the output? Or, would
PRINTCON apply in this environment?
Not supplied, AFAICS, but either one of the simpler print drivers
supplied such as Diablo will do, or you'd need to set one up. Hopefully
http://www.novell.com/documentation/...a/fm19724.html
will help you enough as it's been too long since I did it to remember
the details.

hello, i have 80 text files (docx). the finder preview works great and i can open them in pages.
I need to batch print them from finder:
I select all the documents > drag on printer's icon> printer puts them in queue ( after an on the fly pdf conversion) ad starts printing.
BUT
i need the filename printed on each page ( in hearder or footer) , not only the regular text content.
Do you know if there is a workaround?
thank you

Print text file to client side printer
Hi all,
I have a character mode report which will print to a client side dot matrix printer in 6i. After converted to 10g, we cannot print to the client side printer (because we don't want to map so many print queue from the AS).
So, I try to generate the report to a text file, then use webutil to transfer the txt file to the client PC, and then use Client_HOST to call the window PRINT command to print the text file to the client side printer.
I have test this is successful, however, when I try to do the same thing to a report with Vietnam character, then it is not.
The print request is sent to the printer, but the printer have no response.
But that file can be print successfully if I open in Notepad and then print manually.
I try to use window TYPE command and COPY command, but still have no luck.
Can anyone give me some suggestions for this....
Thanks!Qiu (guest) wrote:

Are u using Run_Product function in the when button pressed,
then u can specify the format in which u want the output, option
available are HTML and PDF, report server runs the report on the
server and sends the output to the client machine. On the client
machine u have to open the file and print it. I cannot print the
report itself on the client machine.
Try.

Print text file with labview 2011 and windows 7
I am having some strange problem, hope someone out there knows the solution.
We have a labview program running under windows xp, the program runs some test and print label from a local label printer. Last week, I have to upgrade the computer to windows 7 and all the sudden the printer will not print any more.
The print vi is very simple. I am using the report function and I am attaching the diagram of that vi below.
If I use windows notepad to open that small text file, I can print fine. This means the printer driver itself is OK. However, if I print the same text file through Labview printing vi, from the printer's task list, I can see it does not recognize the char. From the attached png file, the top one is the task from notepad, it shows 2 pages and the bottom one is from the labview, it becomes 33 pages.
For the printer part, I use Generic / Text Only printer driver which comes from windows itself. And I am aslo attaching a sample of the text file, there are quite a lot of special char, it is for print bar code. When I tried to use labview print text vi to print general text from my computer to a regular printer, the vi works. So it seems Labview print can not handle the special char? Although it worked many years under windows XP in the past.
Welcome to any suggestions!
Thanks

When I print from notepad, everything just goes by default. This is a label printer, so I never need to specify printing parameter such as size, orientation, etc in the past
Famous last words go something like this: "...never had to do that before." Maybe you have to do that now. It's worth at least comparing the defaults settings for bothe generic drivers. It could save you a lot of headache if you notice something different.

i am not using 10.6.7. But try to reset the printing system.
01. go to system preference --> Print
02. Press the control button and Click the printer (This will pop another window)
03. reset the printing system. (this is common system to fix printing issues, but i am not sure if this works with 10.6.7, but try !)
if this not working, perhaps you need to update your printing driver

How to print a text file using Java
How can I print a text file using Java without converting the output to an image format. Is there anyway I can send the characters in the text file as it is for a print job? I did get a listing doing this ... but that converted the text to an image format before printing....
THanks,.Hi I had to write a print api from scratch, and I did not convert the output to image. Go and read up on the following code. I know there is a Tutorial on Sun about the differant sections of the snippet.
private void printReport()
Frame tempFrame = new Frame(getName());
PrintJob printerJob = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getPrintJob(tempFrame, "Liesltext", null);
Graphics g = printerJob.getGraphics();
//I wrote the method below for calculations
printBasics(g);
g.dispose();
printerJob.end();
}This alone wont print it you have to do all the calculations in the printBasics method. And as I said I wrote this from scratch and all I did was research first the tutorial and the white papers

How to print the data in a seperate page / text file
Hi Experts,
I have created WD program which fetches data from R/3 using RFC. I am using following statement for printing the results:
wdComponentAPI.getMessageManager().reportSuccess("The value is " + value);
I am running the code for 20,000 rows. The results are printed on the same IE page. However it becomes difficult to see the results. I want to get the output printed in any of the following ways:
Option 1
1) There should be a link in WD program. When the user willl click on the link other IE page should get open and results should be printed in this page.
Option 2
2) The ouput should be written in a text file and user can store the file in local machine.
Please help me.
Regards,
GaryJust create a function in your WD application that writes these lines (in loop; pass array of strings to the function) on a text file and saved as a web resource object then have it available for download by the user. Simple as that.
Search for WD tutorials that involves downloads and using the web resouce object in WD applications.
This guide should provide you a good feel through the entire approach: /people/bertram.ganz/blog/2007/05/25/new-web-dynpro-java-tutorials--uploading-and-downloading-files-in-sap-netweaver-70 -
How to print a text file with long lines?
I am trying to print a text file which contains many long lines. I find that the long lines are truncated on the printouts. How do I wrap up these long lines? Could you give me some examples?
Thank you very much!Here's an example. The "\n" makes anything after it go to the next line. I hope this helps. Look at the Private void getTable() section.

How to send a text file to a printer?
Hi, I'm in dark on how to send a text file to a printer through Java Stored Procedure.
Here are what I tried so far (OS: win 2000, Oracle: 817 or 9i2):
1, Enable DOS command in Java Stored Proc. and try to send PRINT command there:
public static String Run(String Command){
try{
Runtime.getRuntime().exec(Command);
System.out.println("Command: " + Command);
return("0");
catch (Exception e){
System.out.println("Error running command: " + Command +
"\n" + e.getMessage());
return(e.getMessage());
public static void main(String args[]){
if (args.length == 1)
Run("print /D:\\\\enterprise\\john " + args[0]);
else System.out.println("Usage: java OSCommand filename");
PL/SQL wrapper:
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION OSCommand_Run(p1 IN VARCHAR2) RETURN VARCHAR2 AUTHID CURRENT_USER AS LANGUAGE JAVA NAME 'OSCommand.Run(java.lang.String) return java.lang.String';
SQL command:
//print /D:\\machine\printer test.txt
I loaded the Java Stored Procedure into SYSDBS account, it failed silently, even though piece of code works fine in external JVM.
2, Use filePrinter:
public static String print(String printString) {
try{
String printerUNC = "\\\\machine\\printer";
FileWriter fw = new FileWriter(printerUNC);
PrintWriter pw = new PrintWriter(fw);
pw.println(printString);
fw.close();
return "OK";
}catch(Exception e){
e.printStackTrace();
return "Exception: " + e.getMessage();
public static void main(String[] args) {
try{
String printerUNC = "\\\\machine\\printer";
String printString = "Hello World";
FileWriter fw = new FileWriter(printerUNC);
PrintWriter pw = new PrintWriter(fw);
pw.println(printString);
fw.close();
}catch(Exception e){e.printStackTrace();}
I loaded it into SYSDBS too, and tried with this:
SQL> select MY_PRINT.PRINT('HELLO from Oracle') from dual;
MY_PRINT.PRINT('HELLOFROMORACLE')
Exception: No such file or directory
SQL> show user
USER is "SYS"
It works in external JVM too.
What's wrong with this?
Thanks for any help in advance,

Thanks for your response!
I put the java code in SYS, 'cause I assume that account has max privilege. If the test is successful, I will move that to some user schema and then to deal with those privilege settings... But I'm unlucky.
I checked Ask Tom, this is what I got from http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/ask/f?p=4950:8:1619723::NO::F4950_P8_DISPLAYID,F4950_P8_CRITERIA:38012348052,%7Bprinter%7D:
... Print file from PL/SQL ...
If you are using Oracle8i, release 8.1 -- much can be done with Java. java
would be able to print directly from the server.
Looks like using Java to print out file is better than PL/SQL. But there's no more hint there! And, no new question can be asked there today either...
I'm wondering whether we can create a socket to a printer and send the characters there directly... Anyone has experience on this?
Thanks for all the help in advance,

Issue : Read a text file and print the same
Hi, My requirement is to read a text file and print it the same way.
import java.io.BufferedReader;
import java.io.FileReader;
public class CatFile {
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception
FileReader file = new FileReader("D:/Test/Allfiles.txt");
BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(file);
String text = "";
String line = reader.readLine();
while (line != null)
text += line;
line = reader.readLine();
System.out.println(text);
The text file i used contains
A
B
C
but my output is ABC.
What change should be made to print it the same way in the txt file ?Hi EJP,
I modified the code based on your suggestion and now its working as expected. Thanks
Modified code :
import java.io.BufferedReader;
import java.io.FileReader;
public class CatFile {
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception
FileReader file = new FileReader("D:/Test/Allfiles.txt");
BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(file);
String text = "";
String line = reader.readLine();
while (line != null)
System.out.println(line);
line = reader.readLine();
text += line;

Printing the First 14 Characters of Every Line in a Text File
My text file looks like the following:
1111097116274, H0101C58F8110C005, 1, 16:48:03
1111097116274, H0100058F8110C006, 2, 16:48:10
1111097116274, H00F0458F8110C006, 3, 16:48:12I want my java program to print the first 14 characters of every line. Here's what I have:
import java.awt.*;
import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
import java.io.*;
public class Read {
public static void main( String args[] ) {
try {
BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("aFile.txt"));
String line;;
/*String tagid;*/
while ((line = in.readLine()) != null) {
char[] tagid = line.toCharArray();
line.getChars(0, 14, tagid, 0);
System.out.println(tagid);
in.close();
} catch (IOException e) {
JOptionPane.showMessageDialog( null, "Error" );
System.exit(0);
Instead of printing the first 14 characters of every line to output, it prints the whole text file.
Any ideas of what's wrong?
Thanks.Well, that's the thing with a highly tuned, precision engine like your mind, JosAH. Adding a little alchohol to the fuel mix provides a performance boost, but as the alcohol/fuel ration increases, the performance improvement peaks and then degrades, until the performance is actually reduced. Now, I understand that in the case of the magic Grolsch, this performance curve is shifted farther to the right (graphed with Grolsch count as the independent variable, and performance improvement as the dependent variable), but it still occurs.
I recommend nitrous oxide. You may need to get your piston heads hardened, though.

Print report into TEXT file format
How am I going to produce a text file report from report builder?
-- I want all the layout header, page number, time as preview windows.
-- I use charactor mode to build the report, then use option "generate to file - delimited".(but the layout was messy)
-- After save the file, the layout is totally different from preview window.
How can I overcome this problem. Thank you for helping.hello Tan Chin Chye,
if you create your report in character mode, then if you pass/set parameter mode to character, then you can create text file by supplying values for parameters destype (file), desformat (selected printer file - you may customize some for yourself - number of characters per line, number of lines pre page, some control sequences ...) and desname (name of file to create). not sure about creating such file from previewer, but you can try print and then print to file option ... in character mode this should produce plain text ...
