Print to File:  Removing white border

I have a lot of issues going on here.  I'm sure that a lot of my problems are a result of my lack of understanding of file size and print resolution.  I'm a newbie to printing with Lightroom, and, to be frank, a newbie to printing in general because I've never understood the terminology and technical aspects.  (Reading articles about dpi, ppi, image size, and resolution is a VERY difficult undertaking.  There is conflicting information, and it's hard to find someone who can explain it in easy to understand terms.)
I print at Costco, and I use their printer settings.  As far as I can tell, the only way to embed the printer profile in an image is to print to file.  What I would prefer is to save my image as a .jpg and upload it to Costco.
When I set up a photo for print to file, Lightroom places a white border around it because it's trying to arrange my photo on the printer paper.  Even when I change the Print Job to print to .jpg, it does this.  The only way to get around this is to check "custom file dimension" under print job, and then select a size.  Then, under layout, I'm able to set the margins to zero and the cell sizes to the dimensions of the photo I'm going to print.
I notice that when I use a custom file dimenstion, the size of the image changes.  If I choose 8 x 10, it chooses a file size about the same as the original image (8mb).  If I'm printing a poster, 20 x 30, it creates a huge 27mb file.  At first, I thought I could just use ratios, such as 2 x 3, but it seems like that would shrink the photo down to such a small extent that it would be pixelly.
And how is all this affected by resolution?  If I choose 300 ppi how is that affected by whether an image is printed 5 x 7, 8 x 10, or 20 x 30.
Before using lighroom, I simply croppoed a photo, added the printer profile, saved it, and uploaded it.  I do not understand why Lightroom is making me choose the paper size.

How you are getting rid of the border is pretty much the way to do it -- you can save this layout as a preset for next time.  However, as far as printing to JPEG for printing at a service, I just use the regular export dialogue.  Unless you are printing 8x10s with some custom layout of multiple files (e.g., you could print a number of little wallet-size photos, and then cut them out yourself) and don't need the features the print module gives you, this is just easier. But exporting a JPEG from the regular export makes borderless print-ready images if you select the right options.
DPI/PPI can be a confusing subject, but there are tools on the internet that allow you to calculate the number of pixels you need to clearly print at certain sizes.  Honestly, for most of us not doing fine prints (and given you are sending these to Costco, I'm assuming this is not the case) just do 240 or 300 for 4x6s and 5x7s, increase this to 600 for 8x10 and similar sizes, and go to 1200 or 2400 when you step up to the really large sizes. Remember, the larger the print, the further back you stand to get the whole thing, so at some point resolution becomes less important.
You can probably export at less than 100% quality and get very good results.  There is an article out there that discusses JPEG quality and file size in Lr, which is different than Photoshop. The upshot is that you get very good results at around the 85-90% range.  This, of course, depends on the information in the image.  You also want to strip most of the metadata from the file. This can account for a large amount of room in the file.
Find out if your service expects sRGB or can accept AdobeRGB (surprisingly, a lot of photo kiosk prefer AdobeRGB) and then you can get your colours closer to what you expect.
Ideally, you want to export at the size you expect to print at. Lr will optimize the sharpening and so on based on the target file dimensions along with the resolution, and you will just get better, sharper results. You will want to crop to the right ratios, too, so that the target dimension makes sense. Lr will never try to distort your image to fit certain dimensions, so some creative sampling will occur, otherwise.
Lr is actually one of the easiest apps I've ever used for getting images print-ready.  Between the sharpening, the white and black points (because blow-outs in print look terrible) and so on, it is easy to get pretty good results as amateur.  You do have to decide the dimensions and resolution, though, in order for Lr to make the right choices when rendering the final JPEG.

  • Removing White Border

Hey, I'm new to Elements 10 and am experiencing my first real problem.  I have a fun printer that allows me to print photos onto photo paper and I was experimenting with a couple photos.  My problem: They are printing with an annoying white border and I cannot figure out how to get rid of it.  If anyone could please shed some light onto this matter, I would greatly appreciate it.  Thanks.

To add to Mark's post, not all printers will print borderless, so check the documentation. If your printer is ok for borderless, follow these steps:
Go to File>print in Editor. I never print from the Organizer.
In the dialog that comes up, go to #2 Printer Settings
Click on change settings, then advanced settings
    Tick the box for Borderless
Under #3 for Paper type, be sure to select the borderless option for your size paper stock
Crop the picture to the dimensions of the paper stock before you send it to the printer.

  • Remove white border around TOC

Hello all, I have set a black background to the HTML page, playback controls and TOC. Yet Captivate draws a white border line 1px wide around the TOC. Is there any way to remove this?

    Hi Robert,
I can understand how it feels when something is translated entirely different than what the feature is supposed to do.
    This says it....
"For example the new function that moves the recording area following the mouse movement has been translated into a term that describes the balancing of stereo sound."

  • Removing white border when publishing in web

    Hi
There seems to be a default white border around the web
published version of my CAL metarial. See below

How do I remove it so the CAL material is flush against the

Set the margin and padding on the body tag of the html page
    to 0. You can
do this directly in the tag or with CSS.

  • SWF file with white border

    Hi
I'm trying to import an SWF file (with associated movie and captioning) into Acrobat Pro 9.
I'm placing it using a URL from my server.
The video places fine but I'm getting a white border top and bottom of the file. This is a problem as there is a coloured background to the Acrobat file I'm trying to place the movie.
The white border doesn't exist when I view the file in Flash.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Andy

    Andy:
Have you checked the properties of the imported file. Control-Click on the file with the Video Tool and a fly-out menu will appear where you can bring up it's properties. You should be able to see if a border is set there.

  • Remove white border of Dock windows/replace graphics

Hi, thanks for your time. As you can see on this image, I successfully replaced the Dock background images in Macintosh HD > System > Library > CoreServices > Dock with my own simplified graphics and reloaded the Dock with Terminal: killal Dock.
I would like to now replace the image files that create the white border in the Menu windows of the Dock. (How) can I do this? I already created the replacement files, seen listed in the screenshot.

Is it even possible to do this? I replaced the image files but it still looks the same. Is there a similar killall command for the Terminal to do this as with the Dock background?

  • How do I stop my printer from leaving a white border on photos

Why does my printer leave a white border on my pictures?  I did not select the photo paper "with tab".
What can I do to change this??

    Hi,
Does the photo paper that you're using have a tab attached? If it does, the paper would have a dotted tear away line somewhere close to the edge of one side.
If you're using photo paper with a tab, you'll need to feed the paper in an orientatuin such that you can tear off the tab, leaving you with a full photo.
If you don't have paper with a tab, then make sure that the paper is properly loaded into the photo tray.

  • Removing white border around applet in browser?

    Greetings All,
My applets are surrounded by a white border in Netscape and IE. Can I get rid of it so that the applet goes from edge to edge in the browser control? (Looks like default 5 pixel Hgap is in force, is this the case, and if so can it be overridden without access to the source code?)
    TIA,
    Dave.

Hi, Even when you assign 100% to width and height you will notice one black border around applet in case of IE5.0 When I go in to full srceen mode in IE 5.0 It should not show me scrollbars.
But because of this border scrollbar remains

  • Can't remove white border/line on left & top of Swiftweasel [Solved]

As the title states; I cannot remove this persistent white line/border thing at the top and left side of my Swiftweasel (Firefox) web browser. I know there must've been a post about this before but with such familiar/vague keyword combinations such as "white line border swiftweasel / firefox", etc, I couldn't find anything in the Forum or on Google except something to do with certain webpages (which in my case is on ALL pages). Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about:
(Swiftweasel is at the top of the screen, in case you couldn't tell. See the white line/border at top/left?)
I disabled all my extensions and Stylish styles and the white line/border on top & left side are still there. This was an issue on my previous Arch installation as well (not that it has anything to do with Arch itself) but I'm just saying that it's been an issue before for me. Any ideas?   It's just very annoying.
EDIT:  Solved: read my last post.

Thanks for the response. As far as renaming ~/.mozilla, it kept regenerating itself each time I opened Swiftweasel, so I moved ~/.sw35 to ~/.sw000 and then opened it and there was no white line. So I went through one by one installing my add-ons again and, even though I had disabled it and restarted earlier, it turns out that if I don't install "NumExt" it wont have the white line. That's so weird that it didn't do it earlier when I disabled it. Sad, though, since I really liked that extensions. Maybe I'll see if I can edit the file somehow.

  • Unwanted white border when printing to file on LR2

I have been using "print to file" on LR2 (mac) to export images for a website (the only way that I know to add the identity plate so that it is readable).
I always get a white border around the image.(In addition to the custom Inner stroke border that I can add myself) How do I get rid of the white border??
    Thanks,
    Nikos.

Nikos!!!! You should be out shooting not blabbering on internet fora ;-)
You;re using LR 2.0 b I think. Two ways: Set up a costum page size with zero margins in the Page setup and reduce the margins in the layout section to zero. Second way is to set custom file dimensions in the print job section and then set the margins in the page layout section to zero. You should also extend the cell size to the max and make sure you have enabled Zoom to fill and Rotate to fit.
    Cheers!

  • How do I get rid of the white border that prints on my pictures?

    Lightroom 2 - Windows 7 64-bit - Nikon D700
I have just downloaded my Lightroom software to my new computer which runs Windows 7.  I had lightroom on my old Vista computer and just had to change the border size to remove it from my pictures, however, for some reason it will not let me remove it anymore.  When I try to adjust the border size it states it cannot be smaller than .2.  Therefore, I have a white border around all my pictures I am printing.  HELP!  How do I get rid of this border.  Thank you so much for the help.

Make sure you select a borderless papersize in the page setup. That will allow Lightroom to set the margins to zero. Otherwise it sets it to the minumum value the printer tells Lightroom it can print at at the current print size. Your printer and driver need to support borderless printing for this to work.

  • Printing a .pdf with "boxed" sections appearing as "white" and showing a "white" border to the "box"

    Dear Community,
I have created a .pdf file from an email and then "boxed" sections of the document with a white border and a white fill, intending the recipient to be unable to see the text within the "box". However, when I print the document it appears as if the "boxed" sections did not exist. In other words, all the text in the email is printed. Can anyone help with a solution, please.

You cannot create pdf files or forms in Adobe Reader. If you used Acrobat, please repost in that forum.

  • Deskjet 3050 does only print JPG files in color - all other docs are only printed in black and white

    Dear All,
I have a problem with my Deskjet 3050 Printer. (USB connected with my laptop).
My printer won't print colored documents in color but only in black and white (except for JPG files (photos) which are printed in color.
Word documents or PDF files (for example) are always printed in black and white - even if these are in color.
Copying colored pages with my printer is no problem.
This works perfectly well. The printer is connected to my PC via USB.
The cartridges (color and black and white) are practically new and original HP cartridges.
Could the problem be related to the printer settings which I might have changed by accident.
Thanks in advance for your advise.

  • Cannot  print  pdf files  with  9.3.1, cannot remove patch

does anyone know how to fix msi problems ? updater says 9.3.1 is more functional than 9.4 what does that mean? does that mean I need to remove 9.3.1 in order to install 9.4 ?  All i want out of this is the ability to control what stays and want goes onto my hard drive and the ability to print PDF files like the product claims. I swear as my life advances I will not buy a product from a company that cannot support me with there standard issues of products . offering a free product that malfunctions is not my idea of building a trusting relationship. What's more disturbing is that I talked with Ganesh this morning on adobe chat and know i cannot even register with that email. Can anyone fix msi problems or is this just a runaround bad business practice of post WTO new world order ?  Thanks for letting me vent. Now about the msi problem...

Thanks for the advice, but I'm
already beyond that(go to add remove
programs and click remove). I did my backup and downloaded windows installer cleanup from http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html  After download when I ran the program to install it, the window that popped up was labled "Microsoft Office Update". When that disappeared I found Windows Installer Cleanup located in the All programs list in start. I clicked it and a window popped up about the size of task manager. I scrolled down and highlighted Adobe 9.3.1 and clicked remove and it removed it and the 9.3.1 unremovable update from the conrol panel. Then I went to Adobe.com , downloads and downloaded Adobe 9.4, installed it, and tested it by printing a PDF file.   Before I was scared to mess up my netbook and didn't want to deal with the hassle, but we all have our limits until we start to take these kind of risks into the unknown. sometimes, even though it's a burden to register to umpteen forums, it's that extra hassle that gets you over the edge. Please share this info. ohh yeah, NONE of this was done in safe mode.
