Print to network printer on Headless Unix box

Hi
I have written an app which prints an image on the default printer of a headless unix box.
I have been told that if I which to extend my app to print my document to a named network printer, I will need to get additional software. Is this true?

I think you want PrinterJob.lookupPrintServices. Find the PrintService you want and create a PrinterJob from that.

How do I set up my HP psc2175xi all in one printer for wireless printing or network printing?
I am changing the set up of my home computer to add another computer.
I would like to go wireless from my computers to the hub and wired from the hub to my
printer. I do not think this printer can do that since it does not have the ports to connect to a router hub, I think.
I am rather new to this way of setting up, so any help would be nice.

You could get a wireless router that supports USB printers, but these only support printing, not scanning.  You could just go buy a new wireless printer since your printer is pretty old, anyway.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Error When Printing on Network Printer

I am trying to connect to a windows network printer through my MacBook Air. I can connect to the printer via the windows network and can send documents to print.
The document goes through to print but at the last second it says there is an error.
When looking on the network windows computer, in which the printer is installed, I can see the document has gone through to print using the printer dialogue box for microsoft, but it details there is an error and the document doesn't print.
It seems that they are connected but there is still an error.
Both Windows and Mac computers are up to date currently and the printer is a HP Deskjet F4180.
    Appreciate any help.

The problem is that HP wrote their driver(s) to only use the comm protocol they wanted to support. In your case, bonjour via USB (&/or Wifi?).
You need a different driver - that can use all the standard comm protocols available in OS X, like Windows printing.
(remember that I don't have your printer to test this)
Try the 3-part driver set hpijs from here (it says for 10.8, but others say it works with 10.9):

  • PLEASE HELP:printing to network printer from MacBook to PC

    Greetings,
I have a desktop running XP with a HP PSC 1210 attached by USB. Last week I upgraded from an old Windows laptop to a shiny new MacBook. Love it but can't print through the wireless network.
    I have:
Followed the ifelix guide and was able to see the printer though the network and add it.
Followed the ifelic guide for troubleshooting and installed the unix tcp/ip printing component of windows. Still no printing.
Installed both the hpisj and esp drivers and added printers on the MacBook selecting each of one of these driver. No printing.
    What happens:
The print job becomes active then finishes on the MacBook. It is then sent through the network where it appears as a print job in the queue with the status as 'printing' and then it just sits there and does nothing never going away and doesn't allow other jobs to print after it.
I also tried travelling over 100 kilometers this weekend to the Apple store in Toronto and spoke with a Genius at the Genius bar who, without even trying said that some printers just won't work. When I asked him which printers definitely would work, he had no idea. His only suggestions was to turn print sharing off on the Mac side. Not exactly worth the 3 hours of driving.
So, while I love my MacBook, I have actually lost a much used function that I had on my old crummy laptop; a function that will be dearly missed.
Please, if anyone has any suggestions, I would be greatly appreciative. If I need to provide any more details, let me know.

The link you gave is for printing from Classic programs on the same Mac. To print from another Mac running OS 9.2:
    1) On the server (with printer attached) enable print sharing both in Sharing prefs and in Print & Fax prefs.
    2) again on OS X (server), in Printer Setup highlight the Deskjet and click Show Info and find and write down the queue name. Also find the server IP address in Network Prefs and write it down.
    3) On the OS 9 computer, find Apple Printer Utility (usually in Apple Extras) and start it. Create an LPR/LPD printer and enter the IP address and queue name where asked for.
    4) Important - For printer model, choose an Apple Color LaserWriter xx as the PPD/model. This entire setup assumes a postscript printer. The good news is that OS X expects to receive postscript input and it translates that for the Deskjet.
PS, it is possible that the HP driver you installed on OS9 could work, in which case you don't need to follow the above postscript procedure. Instead, in Chooser on OS 9, select the appletalk driver for your deskjet and if the printer attached to the server shows up, select it (right side of Chooser) and it may then work. I haven't got an older deskjet to try, so I don't know if it'll work.

  • Can't print to network printer

I can’t print to my network printer.  Network Magic shows that the printer is ‘online’, however, when I try to print from Windows, the ‘Print’ dialog box shows the status as ‘Error - Offline’.  The printer’s display window shows the printer as ‘Ready’.

    Hi aquaman53,
The problem is that the Router has changed the IP Address of the Lexmark Network Printer. You need to use Static IP Addresses so the IP Address does not change.
I don't know if the DI-524 Router allows one to assign Devices / Computers to Static IP Addresses. I know that you can with the DIR-655 Router.

  • CUPS not printing to network printer.Printer visible to avahi and cups

Hey. Printing seemed to be working fine last time I checked (which, granted, was a while ago...I don't print that much). I have a networked Canon MG4100 class printer. Avahi sees the printer just fine, as does cups (I can add and modify the printer without any troubles). However when I try to print, it starts printing but then the Cups interface notifies me 'Unable to locate printer "canon.local".'
    1. The printer works fine from a windows laptop
    2. I reset the printer and the wireless router it's attached to

I'll look into that when I get a chance. I'm just using the Gutenprint drivers. They were working fine up until recently...I just don't know at what point because I rarely print! I'm a little leery of adding the printer with a static IP address, because it's not a static IP setup...I know it should stay the same for the most part, but I thought that's why we used Avahi...to get away from having to know the IP address!
    Thanks for the input!

  • Cannot print to network printer

Can anyone else print to network printers on build 9879?
I can detect and install my network printers just fine. At the end of the install I checked the box to print a test page. The page disappeared from the print queue, but never printed. I try to send another text page and I get an error
"Test page failed to print. Would you like to view the print troubleshooter for assistance?"
Of course the troubleshooter doesn't find anything. There are no errors in the Windows event logs. I have tried two different printers both of which work fine from any other computers on the same network. They are both HP printers. One is an HP OfficeJet
Pro 8610 and the other is an HP Color Laserjet M451dn. Both have drivers included in Windows 10.

    Hi DS62,
Please download the latest driver file from official website:
HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer Drivers

Please Note: Since the website is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.
Or you can add driver manually:
    Alex Zhao
    TechNet Community Support
    Just my 2cents worth.
With that link from Alex you still need to choose the Windows version.
I guess the newest one is Windows 8.1 and the correct architecture ie 32 bit or 64 bit.
    Regards,
    Richard
What did you break today ? on second thoughts don't tell me, let me guess.

  • Acrobat XI: Printing to networked printer fails without error message

    I'm using Windows 8 Professional.
When I use Acrobat XI Professional or Reader XI to print to a networked printer, Acrobat and Reader throw up the Progress dialog, showing the document is getting spooled. However, nothing appears in my printer's status window and nothing gets printed. There are no error messages.
When I use Windows 8 Pro's Reader app to print to the networked printer, it works just fine.
I thus have a workaround, so not all is lost.
However, how do I diagnose why only the Adobe applications on my computer can't use the networked printer?
    -- Tim
    Timothy J. McGowan

    Thanks for the advice.
The problem is not solved.  This is what i have tried.
    Attempt 1.
Log-in as Administrator via  "CRTL-ALT-DEL" twice at the Welcome window.
"Repair" Adobe Acrobat XI Pro installation.
    Same failure as described earlier.
    Attempt 2.
Log-in as Administrator via  "CRTL-ALT-DEL" twice at the Welcome window.
    Uninstall Acro XI Pro.
    Run :  acrobat_ittools_cleaner_p1_040612.zip
Log of "cleaner" shows deletion of very many, but ot all, Registry Acro-associated keys.
At end of uninstall and cleaner processes, re-start machine.
Log-in again as Administrator via  "CRTL-ALT-DEL" twice at the Welcome window.
Disable Norton 360 and Webroot Secure Anywhere prior to Acro XI Pro installation.
Re-install Acro XI Pro (this time, for "Default" choice, as opposed to "Complete" in previous installs.)
Outcome:  NO Adobe PDF printer.  HOWEVER, both during the "Repair" and re-install processes, a message did flash: "Creating the Adobe PDF Printer".
Both Repair and re-install:  The Adobe PDF printer is not listed under "Manufacturer" when "Add Printer" is executed (see image below).
Proceeding via "Have Disk", C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 11.0\Acrobat\Xtras\AdobePDF\AdobePDF.inf,  yields the failure to install the driver previously described, for all ten (10) instance of the Adobe PDF Converter options.
    Thanks for any insights.

  • Problem printing to networked printer

I have a strange printing problem:
    13" unibody MacBook running OS X 10.6.3
Dell dimension desktop PC running Win XP Home Edition (SP3)
Wireless LAN connecting the two computers above via Time Capsule wireless base station.
Canon Pixma MP540 printer connected to PC via USB.
Printer set up on PC as shared and visible to MacBook over wireless LAN.
Printing from PC to printer OK.
Printing from MacBook to printer places job in print queue on PC but status never changes from 'spooling' and print job never completes.
If I connect the printer directly to the MacBook via USB it prints with no problems. I can also then see the printer as a network printer from the PC and successfully print to it from there.
Can anyone suggest why the job never completes when the printer is attached to the PC?
    Thanks, Ian

I'm having the exact same problem! It's so annoying

  • Pages will not print via network printer

I have purchased and installe Pages and Numbers and neither one will print to my network printer. I have been using my DeskJet 970 on my network without trouble.
I can print from other apps installed on my iPad via this same printer.
In support of printing I have purchased Print-N-Share as well as PrintCentral Pro. I have also install wePrint on my desktop.
When I open Pages and attempt to print I am asked to select a printer. The message that comes up is that no Airprint printers were found. It totally ignores my wePrint server app which connects Print-N-Share and PrintCentral Pro.
I have already requested a reinstatement to my account for $9.99 which Apple has thus far ignored.
Has anyone experience this or found a solution to this problem.

Hi All printers are different. I suggest you contact the printer manufacture. Do you have the installation disc that came with the printer?? Try installing the printer on all computers that do not work?? Also unplug the printer for 20 seconds. Some times I have to unplug my HP to get it to work wireless. It's kind a like rebooting your PC

  • Basic tiger server printing to network printer issues - HELP :)

Hi everyone, Im after some help as im running out of ideas, here is my basic setup: (sorry i have rambled on a bit
current 192.168.0.x network that has ADSL, PC's HP Laserjet 5Si network printer.
Connected to that is my Tiger server with 2 lan ports, one is connected to that network and the other connected to a switch where I run all my macs - the server is a basic file and software update server.
macs connected to the server get a 192.168.2.x address and can access the internet and each other etc - all is happy.
now - I had my personal macbook pro connected directly to the first network to access the printer, works fine and fairly quickly but was unable to access the server (i imagine because the server thinks i was from the big bad internet from the .0.x range
once i connected to the other network served by the mac server i could access all the files fine but printing would not work, so i thought I would have the server access the printer as it has access to both networks and just share it to the local macs.
well when i add it and put in the 192.168.0.71 address it connects and loads the GIMP HP5si driver, but when it tried to print it takes up to 5 mins to show that its finished, but only sometimes does the printer actually fire up, and the times it did it never printed the whole page...
The only thing i can think of is that the server is trying to print to the .0.x address'ed printer but using the .2.x address range, possibly confusing the systems.., im not too familiar with all the firewall/NAT settings ,i think i have everything turned off, but its still not working..
If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated, im not sure what else to do.
    Thank you for your time

This sounds more like a protocol or a driver issue rather than an addressing issue. Which protocol is being used to connect to the printer? You mention the GIMP driver gets loaded, which I read that it's an automatic function rather than you having to manually browse to the driver.
Also, I would look at trying the Gutenprint drivers from Sourceforge rather than the included GIMP-Print.
The other thing would be to check the cups error log on the server. It could give some clues as to why the spool file is taking so long.

  • Printing to network printer from OS 9.2 to OS 10.4

I have an HP Deskjet 810c connected to my Mac running OS 10.4 and want to print from my other Mac running OS 9.2. Both Macs have drivers installed.
The computers are networked via a Linksys cabled router.
I tried doing what Apples suggests in their 10.4 help area (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh660.html) but it still doesn't work.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  • Trouble Printing to Network Printer via Remote Desktop Connection

    Specs:
    Macbook Pro, early 2013,
    Mavericks (10.9.2),
Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection v.8.0.5 (latest),
Connecting to Windows Server 2008 standard
Printer, HP LaserJet P2035n, connected via the network
When on the Mac connected to the server, the printers from the Mac are redirected so you're supposed to be able to print from Remote Desktop to the HP printer.  However, when you select something to print, the job goes to the print and keeps printing over and over and over again until you cancel the print job, which it usually allows you to do, or turn off the printer, which you have to do when it won't let you cancel the job.
Any advice on how to get the printer connection running normally?

What you haven't told us is what method you use to connect/setup the printer on Windows. There are two ways - Bonjour for Windows (free software from Apple), and TCP/IP raw port 9100. If you have a problem using one, try the other.

  • Can't print to network printer after application is built

All computers are Windows 2000, LabVIEW 5.1.1. While the application is run from Labview, printing to a network printer works fine(using the Easy Text Report.vi). The application was then made into an exe using the application builder. The development system was removed from the computer and network printing still works ok. When the exe is installed on a different computer (along with AccessHW and CVIRTE5.5) network printing does not work from the application. Other programs on this computer can do network printing.
It appears the development system has installed some files that are retained even after the development system is removed. What am I missing.
