Print to PDF from illustrator CS3

CS3: In the Print dialog box, with Adobe PDF 8.0, I select the Printer Setup dialog box. Under the Layout pulldown menu I have PDF Options (settings) and Printer Features. Then select the print button to Save to File and name with the option to browse where you want the file.
The Problem:
Since I installed CS4, the PDF Options is no longer available in CS3 and Save to File does not come up, can not rename and no option to direct file. The pdf file does show up on the desktop. This is happening on 2 machines. Both running Mac OS 10.4.11. One is Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel and the other a Power Mac G5 dual. I have CS2 loaded as well on each of these.
A third PowerMac G5 Dual which is using Adobe PDF 7.0 has the pdf options, renames and can direct, but the files get stopped in the Printer List (CS3). Starting Job again does not work. This happened also after installing CS4.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Zuc,
The problem is the lousy version CS4 that conflicts with the Lousy version CS3. I believe you have to uninstall Lousy version CS3 to make Lousy version CS4 work (or vise-versa).
But you are not alone, PC users have the same experience (they are using the same lousy software):

So you have to choose which version is less harmful. Is sad that Adobe is not longer reliable with new technology. Please let me know when CS4 gets an update. Thank you!

I can't print to PDF from Illustrator CS3

I have been using CS3 for a while now, but the last two jobs I have attempted to print to PDF with have failed. I get the message, "Can't Print the Illustration" and then the following error message:

There's either an offending object or a corrupt font.
You can try these:
1. first make a copy of the file.
2. Select All/Convert text to outlines and make PDF. Does that work?
3. If not, start a new file. Copy and paste each item individually to the new file and try to make a pdf each time. You will soon work out the offending item.

Have you tried File>Scripts>SaveDocsAsPDF? There should be a folder of sample scripts installed in your AICS3 folder and a folder of documentation which contains an Illustrator AppleScript Reference which has examples.

Printing to PDF from Illustrator CS4

Hi,
I have been having serious issues with Illustrator CS4, working on my files and then at the end going to print to PDF and the message reads; "can't print the illustration" ... It is happening even if I have a blank document containing nothing. Could someone please shed some light on this, as I am working on such large files and the 'save to pdf' is not really a great option as it barely reduces the file size.

If you don't tell us about your system and your fonts and all that stuff and what you are doing then there is no way of seeing what is going wrong being as vague as is humanly possible is not helpful.
Tell us about the OS your application fonts, telling us what is important and not important is not a good idea if you do not understand what is going on.
For instance Mylenium's posting suggestion it is not necessary to save to print to pdf because Illustrator is native to pdf. It means you can open an Illustrator file in Acrobat no need to even save it as a pdf unless someone requests it. Or if you turn off the pdf compatibility option.
So if you tell us what information you like and don't like or what information you want us to know and not know we can't help.
By the way even if the you do not use fonts in a document there still may be a problem with the fonts and font cache, even if that does not make sense to you.

Unexpected results, when creating a pdf from Illustrator (cs3)

A customer has supplied a 'print ready' pdf, created in Illustrator [cs3]. The file contains grey text [20% black], but when they have printed to pdf [using acrobat 8], the breakdown of the 'grey' changes in colour to a cmyk value [45,36,35,1) instead of 0,0,0,20 as originally created in Illustrator.
I've replicated the customers error from scratch, and have found that, when you save [save-as] the file as a pdf [using acrobat 8 settings] and resulting pdf is correct = 20% black.
These errors where generated using a pc platform. We also tried to reproduce the error on our Mac's, but the Mac system didn't generate any issues.
Does anyone know why illustrator would produce [using the same native file] two different results when producing pdf's? We've check all colour management, etc. and still can't figure out why this is happening.

I have heard of this issue, but trying to remember is an issue by itself. lol. Seams to me there is an option for true blacks 0,0,0,? and cmy blacks ?,?,?,0. I am almost positive there are a few threads on this forum about this.

Export to pdf vs. print to pdf, from InDesign CS3

We are using Indesign CS3 on Windows XP. We are creating documents for offset printing, with 300dpi photos placed in the document. We are finding that when we "EXPORT" to pdf, and choose a "high quality print", the pdf is fine. However, if we 'print to pdf' and choose "high quality print", the photos in our pdf are more pixellated, and appear to be 150 dpi or lower resolution. Is this a problem with CS3? Does it make any difference how the tiff files have been placed, or sized, in InDesign? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

In the print dialog, when printing to PDF, under the graphics panel, make sure you change the default value of "Optimized Subsampling" to "all" for the "Send Image Data" field.

Can't print from Acrobat. Can't print a simple box in an new document. Any ideas?

White Lines on Live Traced Artwork in PDF from Illustrator CS3

Hi, I've recently been using the Live Trace feature in Adobe Illustrator CS3 on my artwork so that my artwork becomes a vector image instead of a raster (I'm told it's better for Web because it works better with varying resolutions - doesn't become pixelated). For my live trace, I use a custom preset: ADJUSTMENTS- Mode: Color Threshold: 128 (grayed out) Palette: Automatic Max Colors: 256 Output to Swatches: OFF Blur: 0 px Resample: 600 px Fills: ON <grayed out> Strokes: OFF (grayed out) TRACE SETTINGS- Max Stroke Weight: 10 px (grayed out) Min Stroke Length: 20 px (grayed out) Path Fitting: 1 px Minimum Area: 1 px Corner Angle: 1 Ignore White: OFF VIEW- Raster: No Image Vector Tracing Result The preview info, located under the dialogue bubble with the i states: Paths: 4894 Anchors: (no number) Colors: 148 Areas: 4822 Image PPI: 200 I don't know if that helps anyone, but that's just the preset I've used to get a sharper, almost fully preserved vector version of my raster image. When I want to convert it to a PDF file using the File > Save As... > Save as type: PDF with the following preset: Adobe PDF Preset: Illustrator Default Standard: None Compatibility: Acrobat 8 (PDF 1.7) Then, my image as viewed in the Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional has several white lines, outlining areas of color. When I was working on the original raster image in Photoshop CS3, the cream/white area was done with the Ellipse Tool, using Bevel and Emboss in the Blending Options. The same goes for the yellow area, which was done with the Line Tool. The red area was done manually, with the Brush Tool, Smudge, Blur, Burn, etc. I'm telling you guys just about everything I've done leading up to this issue. But, if there's something you need to know more, I'll try to figure out what I could've possibly done wrong to get this result.

I too get this result when using LiveTrace. My simple solution to this problem was to just place a solid color shape behind that section of the trace where it occurs that is the same color as the trace. Simple...but it worked.

Save PDF from Illustrator CS3 with no bleed

I was wondering if anyone knows how to save an Illustrator file to a pdf so that there is no margin or bleed. Basically, I want no white space to surround my content. Any ideas?

Your second statement indicates you
i do
want bleed (artwork extends past trim size so that you have a borderless end-product).
I'm going to assume the second statement more correctly represents what you want.
Either...
1. Adjust your artboard size so that your artwork extends beyond (or coincides exactly with*) the perimeter; or
2. Draw a rectangle to your desired trim dimensions and use Object | Crop Area | Make.
Then, save as PDF.
{I based this on AI 12 (CS2), so details may differ.}
*OK for screen PDF creation, but not recommended for press output. Bleed ensures your final piece is borderless even with slight trimming inaccuracy.

When I try to print from Illustrator CS3 the program unexpectedly quits. I don't get anything happening other than the spinning ball and the quit message.

Is this because the application is so outdated?

Thanks for your help Monika. Yes, the printer is is supported by the system. The printer is about 2 months old and the driver were installed then. I called Canon support and they said it sounded like a problem with Illustrator. I can print the same file by saving it as a pdf and printing from Acrobat Pro, so it seems to be a problem with Illustrator. If I try to print the pdf from Illustrator it will quit.

Printing to PDF from AI makes Random Thicken Lines

This is my first time ever posting because after seaching this forum over and over...I can't find my answer.
Problem: I am working on an AI file created in CS3 that contains linework from AutoCad 2008. I did not import this linework because I didn't feel like redoing all the lineweights, instead I just printed a pdf from AutoCad and opened it into Illustrator. All of that worked very well.
The problem arises when I want to save as a pdf or print to pdf from Illustrator once my drawing is done. Some of the linework that originated in AutoCad is randomly thickened in the middle. So a segment of the line that has a stroke of .48pt when printed shows up like the middle of the line segment has bulged out to 6pt stroke. Very random lines all over the drawing.
I have looked for inconsistancy in both the Cad file and AI file to determine what could be making these lines "bubble" in the middle.
I will post the Ai file and pdf if it helps...I am desperate for a solution as this problem is super bizarre and really slowing me down. Has anyone had this problem and has a solution?

General Acrobat Problem Steps
If you are having problems creating a PDF, there are two steps you should do FIRST
Go to the appropriate vendor web site and apply all updates to the program you are using (several recent messages have concerned problems with MS Office conversion, with the response that different versions of Office have different BUGS that must be fixed by a download from Microsoft - and MS Office products are not the only ones which may, from time to time, need to be updated to work properly)
Apply all updates IN NUMBER ORDER

How to export or print PDF from Illustrator with crop and reg marks?

Hi all,
I realise this is probably a very obvious question, but I've just upgraded from CS3 to CS5.5, and I'm tearing my hair out with the loss of Adobe PDF printer driver. I've looked on forums and can't find this question - prob. so obvious that no one else has asked it.
Can't seem to export as PDF from Illustrator ,only 'save as'. This doesn't give me my crop marks. I've tried putting in crop marks - Effects/Crop Marks - but this places the marks outside my trim, at the edges of my background image, which comes out 2mm all round for bleed purposes.
How can I set crop marks to denote the dimensions of the page size, regardless of how much crap I've got spilling out over the edges for bleed?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can turn on crop & trim marsk when doing a save as to PDF. But turn on some bleed values greater than 0 (not as in my screenshot) or you will not get any bleed of your artwork, just the marks then.

Printer dialogue box hangs when printing from Illustrator cs3

OK... I'm not sure if this is Illustrator related or mac related, but it only happens from Illustrator. In our office we have an iMac (white,flat) running Tiger (OSX 10.4.11). Whenever we try to print from Illustrator CS3 the preint goes through to the printer immediately and prints, but the actual Illustrator spooling bar/printer dialogue box remains. The only way is to wait for about half an hour for the bar to finish or force quit the application and restart (even though it does not show as "not responding" in the Force Quit window.
Now I've tried reinstalling Illustrator. I've run disk warrior. Tried the fsck command on startup. our technical outsources tell us it might be a memory problem, but I'm not tsure as this only happens in Illustrator and no other programs.... any ideas?

I fixed it! After searching I found a workaround:

Print to PDF in Illustrator running Leopard OS

i cannot print to a PDF file (as opposed to saving to PDF) from Illustrator now that i have upgraded my operating system to Leopard. any suggestions?

using Illustrator CS3 and running Leopard 10.5.6. the only option available in the print dialogue for a printer is "Adobe Postscript File". all drivers appear to be present, but even selecting a printer will only allow me to save to a postscript file. when i was running Tiger OS, i was able to print direct to PDF; that option has disappeared.
