Print to PDF questions

I have two questions. I have Acrobat 7 running on 10.5.2 on a new MBP.
1. I can no longer successfully select the Adobe printer from the printer pop-u[p menu in the print dialog box. If I do, things seem to proceed, but the printer immediately goes to pause and will not resume. This is not a major problem, as the PDF button appears at the bottom left and that will save the file to PDF. But I am curious as to why the Adobe "virtual" printer no longer works.
2. Previously, when using the PDF button, I could edit the menu and save PDFs to a folder of my choice. Now, when I select "edit the menu" and then hit the "+" button, I get the appropriate dialog box but cannot select a folder. I can open folders, but cannot select them as the "save to" folder. Any help here would be appreciated.

Some things that used to work in Tiger no longer work in Leopard. I suspect that Adobe did not rush to fix it because there is built-in way to generate PDF files already.

The Edit Menu feature is not designed to select a folder to save your PDF files into. It is so you can select an Automator workflow script to process your PDF file. That's how it handles such tasks as Mail PDF and Save PDF to iPhoto. You could create an Automator script to save a PDF to a particular folder, but in my experience, once you save a PDF to a folder, it becomes the default folder automatically until you select a different one.

  • Printing to pdf question CS5.5 Windows

    I am on a PC - Windows 7 using CS5.5.
    - I have created a piece and printed to a pdf.
    - When the person on the other end prints out the margins are all off. I realize and pointed out they are using an office printer, not a high end printer. The print out seems to be proportionately reduced towards the middle\center.
    - They will have their job done at a Kinko's and I have assured them the Kinko's printer is probably all right and will adjust. I called Kinkos and asked if it needed a specific pdf profile and they said "No."
    - I have sent screen shots of the layout showing measure mark every 1/8 of an inch (placed viewable lines on the layout) so they could see how all is measured properly vis-a-vis InDesign.
    - I checked and there is zero bleed and gutter (guter doesn't apply in this case but made sure anyway).
QUESTION - Is there anything else I can do\try or can it be the printers we are using.
Thanks for any illumination you can give me.

Although you didn't ask about this specifically, your original post mentions that you printed to a PDF. My assumption is that you were saying that you created the PDF file by printing to the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance.
Be aware that Adobe absolutely recommends that PDF from InDesign be created by using the export function instead of the printing to the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance or in any other way creating PDF via distillation of PostScript. Direct PDF export from InDesign (and the equivalent save as PDF from Illustrator and Photoshop) yields the most accurate and reliable PDF. The PostScript produced by Adobe applications is optimized for direct printing, not for PDF creation and is often very device dependent. Live transparency and color management is effectively lost and fonts are not optimized. There are other problems and issues as well. Please keep this in mind when creating PDF in the future.
Adobe does provide PDF generation capabilities as part of Acrobat via the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance as a “method of last resorts” to provide PDF creation services for applications for which there is no other or better way of PDF production.

  • Adobe print and PDF question

    Hi,
    In Adobe I managed to:
    1) print via the spooler my sfp documents
    2) grab the PDF and send them in a email
However I would like to have a combination of both. It now looks like when I set the GETPDF to 'X' it only creates the PDF string (Scenario2) and NOT spool to the printer.
Anybody an idea? I looked into the archiving as well but am lost..
    Thanks!
    Frans

As per my experience you cannot have both. You need to use a FM with parameters and call this FM twice with different expected result (first print, next get PDF). Otto

  • Print to PDF 9.0 - NOT working QuarkXpress

I recently got a new iMac and also purchased the CS4 Design Premium Suite (including Acrobat 9.0) and QuarkXpress 8. I am having trouble "printing to PDF" in QuarkXpress. I tried printing to PDF in other programs, like Word, Excel, etc., and they all work fine. But when I try to create a PDF from Quark, no file appears. I am able to open the print dialog box while it's saving, and it all looks fine... the file pops up in the progress list, opens distiller, and disappears from the progress box. When I view the Completed Jobs, the file even shows up there. But when I go to the destination I chose when saving the PDF, nothing shows up. I tried typing my chosen file name in the search spot of my Finder, and no PDF of that name is located anywhere in my system.
I AM able to File > Export Layout as PDF, and the PDF shows up. But that is an annoying and slower method, and doesn't allow me to save my PDF presets of choice. Plus, it leaves a stupid .log file along with the pdf file that it creates, which clutters up my folders.
I just want to do want I've always done, which is Command+P, and choose "Adobe PDF" as my printer, and get a PDF.
Interestingly, I still have my old laptop, and I installed the new version of QuarkXpress on it, but kept the old CS3 applications (i.e. Acrobat 8.0). And I have no trouble printing to PDF on it. So the only differences are 1) the version of Adobe, and 2) the operating systems.... my new computer has Leopard, and the older laptop has Tiger.
I've tried uninstalling Adobe Acrobat and re-installing it from the disk. But no difference! PLEASE someone help!
    Thanks! Carrie

  • Print to PDF; Print to Compressed PDF; Print to Web Receipts menu, MISSING

I have been trying for several days now to restore printer prefs for a HP Officejet 7410.
Under Mac OS 10.5, and after reinstalling HP software and drivers from www.hp.com, the drop down menu for PDF option is missing entirely! As a work around... have tried 'file > save as', then choose pdf option. (This option only works in a very limited number of programs! I have gotten accustomed to 'printing to pdf' for archiving and password protecting key docs, and emails, et al; and therefore would like to regain this essential feature.
Question is, are others having this same problem with other printers, or have I missed some critical step in setting up my printer? (I already deleted all printers , then created a new printer profile from the print&fax menu under system preferences).
Any thoughts or useful observations, are Greatly Appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Geoff

    John.
    +Thanks for reply.+
Re: +What steps have you taken to restore printer prefs?+
Originally installed Leopard (OS 10.5) using the *'UPGRADE to MAC OS'* selection.
Went to system preferences > deleted all printers. Clicked "+" button to add HP 7400 Series printer via bonjour. Added other virtual printers (FaxSTF). HP 7410 Printer dialog box was still missing "print to PDF" feature, and other features, so downloaded and installed current software and drivers for HP Officejet 7410. Again deleted all printers from 'Print & Fax' dialog box of System Preferences. Added printers Officejet 7400 Series ; and Officejet 7400 Series FAX.
Still have no "print to pdf" functions; can not use HP color rendering technology, only colorsync is available. Control over ink density, color temperature, and other previous print dialog choices are all MISSING IN ACTION.
I have rebooted from a cloned external HD using prior OS (10.4.10) all printer features function properly. So have concluded that Leopard is not 'prime-time' ready as far as many third party printers. Don't know when either HP will update it's drivers, or when Apple will create a update for devise drivers. Imagine there'll be some finger pointing for source of problem between HP & Apple. Guess will be returning to OS 10.4.10 until these bugs are ironed out.
If you have any other thoughts or suggestions, please drop me a note.
    Thanks,
    Geoff

My iMac is connected to a Brother printer. I have Snow Leopard 10.7.3 As of yesterday, when I try to print a PDF it prints as a blank black page. Does anyone know how to correct this so that the PDF will print as I see it on screen?

If you are running Mac OS X 10.7.3 then you have Lion installed, not Snow Leopard. It's probably not important to this discussion, but something you should be aware of.
What application are you printing the PDF files from? Have you tried opening the PDF file using the Preview application that can be found in the Applications folder? Does the issue still occur? Have you tried other PDF files from a different source?
Another poster in the following discussion thread reported that this method resolved their black blank PDF issue when viewing (and presumably printing) PDF files from Safari.

There's a solution if you want to see the PDF inside Safari's window :
Go to the folder : Your Hard Drive / Library / Internet Plug-ins.
If you see a file with PDF in its name drag it to the trash.
Quit and restart Safari to test with a PDF.
If it works you can empty the trash.

  • When I make a Book in Aperture and print a PDF proof version, all the modified photos (marked with Badges) are totally distorted.  What is causing this? All other - non-modified photos - appear to be fine.

When I make a Book using Aperture 3 and print a PDF proof version, all images that have been modified within Aperture are distorted in PDF form.  All other images appear ok.

As if only the corrected layer would have remained on the photos.
So the geometry of the pictures is correct - they are not skewed or something? Only the colors and intensities are wrong?
. Only in printing when it is converted to PDF file some photos are unrecognizable.
Is it the printed pdf or the pdf viewed on the screen? If it is the printed copy you need to fix your print settings.
Does Aperture give a warning, that the high resolution images are not available?
We had some cases of books not being able to be printed, and that was due to a broken reference to the original files. Only the book could not access the originals, all other parts of Aperture could. To check for this, try to add one more adjustment to one of the images in question. Is it possible? Are the edits reflected correctly in the pdf of the book?
We were shooting with 3 cameras, Lumix5 shooting RAW, Cannon 100 shooting JPEG and SONY alfa850 shooting RAW.
Have you tried to reprocess the raw of the edited images? (Photos > Reprocess Raw)
Also try, to remove one of the images from the book and to add it again. That usually helps, if Aperture has lost the connection to the originals used in the book.
If you no have done so already, repair (and if necessary rebuild) the Aperture library.

  • Can't print to pdf from Word - Stumped Applecare & Microsoft level 2

This is a challenge question that has stumped the Applecare level 2 and the Microsoft Office level 2 support people. I'm hoping someone out there can help me.
This is different from the other postings about printing to a pdf. I am able to print to a pdf or to the printer from TextEditor, and I can print from Acrobat, Safari, Mail, etc. The problem is only associated with Mcrosoft Office 2004.
    Here's the scenario:
I had a Mac G4 and got a new MacBook Pro (10.4.9). I ported everything from my old computer to my new computer. My old computer had Microsoft Office v: X. Once I had the new computer up and running, I went to open one of my existing Word documents. When I double-clicked on the Word document on my new computer, I assumed it would open in Office v: X as usual, but the new computer had the Office 2004 Test Drive loaded, and the file opened in the TestDrive. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to print from the file>print dialog box since then. I ended up buying Office 2004, thinking it was time to upgrade, but the fully loaded version has the same problem.
I suspect that the TestDrive irreversibly toggled some switch in some embedded print function file and that the new software installation is not addressing that file.
I called Microsoft and spent 2 hours on the phone with them, and they could not solve the problem. They did acknowledge that the TestDrive takes over as the default and that the TestDrive version cannot print. With the Microsoft people on the phone, I uninstalled all versions of office and removed the preference files, in addition to attempting other things, but that didn't do it. (If I set up another account with administrator rights, the problem exists in the new account as well.)
Keep in mind that I can print when using the icon in the toolbar at the top of the screen, but I cannot get the file>print dialog box to print to the printer or to a pdf. The whole box seems to be disabled. In the end, Microsoft couldn't help and suggested that there was a conflict with the Preview program which enables the print to pdf function. (I made Preview the default program for opening pdf's, instead of Acrobat, but that didn't help either.)
Next, I was on the phone with Applecare (almost an hour with level 2) and they suggested some of the same things. They also suggested removing Office with Appzapper and reinstalling. Appzapper did remove more files than the Microsoft people told me to, but still no dice.
Applecare said an archive install could potentially correct what the TestDrive did, but it would also put all my files in jeopardy if the process ran amok.
I have not yet tried removing Office 2004 and going back to Office v:X, but if nothing else works I can try that next. I'd really like to make it work with Office 2004 though.
In case you're wondering, my printer is connected to the computer directly by the printer cable. The printer is a HP Laserjet 1200, and I updated the drivers as part of the process of trying to solve the problem. I know the printer is old, but it worked well with my G4 and Office v:X. I have also loaded all the latest Microsoft Office and Apple updates for the Office software and the computer.
Let me know if you have any suggestions, and thanks for your help!

Do you get the dialog to come up and then the buttons don't work? Is that what "disabled" means? If so, removing the Xerox plugins could help:

If this is not the case, could you provide more description on what disabled means?

  • How can I set up a share virtual printer on my macbook to print to pdf from my iPhone 5 or iPad?

I've never had the occassion to use a virtual printer setup but I've seen where other people have when they need to print to pdf and have no printer available where they are.  So, my question is really a spin off of that type of situation, except I have a printer, I just don't want to print.  I want to save from my iPad or iPhone to my MacBook's hard drive in pdf format.  From what I've seen online, I would imagine it involves setting up a virtual printer on the MacBook that I can set up as a shared printer, but there are so many conflicting responses on setting up a virtual printer and most of them are for older.  Does anyone have any experience with setting up a similar virtual printer in Maverick?
For completeness, I'll add system info:
MackBook 5.2 Core 2 Duo 2 GHz upgraded with 4 GB DDR2 RAM and Maverick OS
Obviously the virtual printer needs to support iPrint.

If I can not set up a second Contacts folder, does anybody have an alternative way of having contact information that a person could see the information from an Outlook Format available for viewing?

  • How can I print a pdf in the actual size with a page border?

How can I print a pdf in the actual size with a page border? (2 pages per sheet preferred)
I usually print pdfs of books at a copy shop and they turn out fine.
The problem comes when I try to print the same books at home.
I use Adobe Acrobat X with the same settings: "multiple pages per sheet" (2x1) and page border. But the pages are slightly shrunken when printed. I think this is because my printer can't print as closely to the margins. Still, two pages should be able to fit on one sheet in actual size. Are there any layout settings that I can play with to find a better fit, besides portrait and landscape?
If I select page scaling "none," I'm able to print the pdf in actual size, one page per sheet. But there's no option to add a page border.

I have a test with some questions (multiple choice, FIB, matching, etc). I have just one button to submit all the answers, and after submiting the student can see his score and review the test to know where he failed. He can't answer again. However, he can change the answer multiple times before submiting.
"if i turn on success/failure captions the student will see them while answering" - before submitting
"if i turn them off he wont know what's the right answer" - after submitting
My results page is the default. I didn't use any variable. When i go to the results page after reviewing the test all the entry boxes are "wrong".

  • I can not print a pdf file that was sent in an email.  I get the error message that adobe could not

I can not print a pdf file that was sent in an email.  I get an adobe error message that it can not print with an ok to check and when i do I get another adobe error message that says I did not select a page to print. I have downloaded the latest adobe download.  I forwarded the email to my husband and he printed the document just fine.

This first question which comes to mind is how do you display the pdf file in the browser?
For this the browser uses a plug in (e.g. adobe reader) which already has the ability to print the pdf file. Depending on the version of your plug in, printing is started differently.
