Print to Tape Question

I have my Canon ZR200 connected through firewire to my iMac. I have everything finished in my timeline and want to print it to tape. I try doing that by pressing the print to video option. It then goes into full screen and lets me know to press the okay button when I'm ready. I then tell it that I'm ready and the camera starts recording, but nothing really records to the tape. I see the stuff on the screen, but it's just not making it to the tape. Is there a setting I need to fix?

Maybe this thread will help.

  • Help !!!  Print to Tape question

I'm trying to print to tape to the UVW 1800.
The recorder is giving a "No reference" error message.

Specs of your G5? FCP version? Capture card? Do you have a black burst generator connected to the deck?
    Details man!

  • Printing to Tape

    Hi there
    Quick question...
Is there any way to get an accurate timecode from the timeline when printing to tape? ie so that the Printed tape and the Timeline have the same T/C
I am using FCP 6 and a Sony Z1E (HDV)
    Thanks

I will confirm with Jerry that you cannot get timeline timecode, or pre-striped timecode to HDV tape from FCP. The format does not allow it. The only way you can get your footage to HDV tape is to PRINT TO VIDEO, and that doesn't offer those options...and HDV needs to conform for a while too.
HDV is an acquisition format, not a deliverable one. Not with broadcast timecode anyway.

  • Minimum Mac G5 for HDV print to tape

    Hi all,
I've been trying to print to tape my first HDV timeline. The error message reads, "Unable to perform print to video operation for HDV as RT Extreme is not supported. Improved CPU Speed and/or RAM needed to enable RT Extreme and HDV Print to Video".
So my questions are, is there any way to turn off RT Extreme? Is my iMac G5 2.0 ghz, 512mb ram insufficient for this operation? Perhaps boosting the ram could eleviate this issue? Does anyone know the minimum Mac requirement for outputting from FCP5.
On a side note, I was able to export the clip, the reimport it into iMovie HD, but I am having an issue with a black bar on the left of the screen in iMovie which I have also posted on that board looking for answers....

Try turning on Safe in the RT settings in the top left corner of the Timeline Window.
    And render everything.

  • Can the Sony HDV A1p print to tape?

    Hi Guys,
I know there are may posts about HDV and printing to tape but I have not been able to find a specific answer to this question - can the A1p, the little sister of the Z1p, be used if you want to print to tape?
I plan to buy the Black Magic Intensity Pro (unless someone screams it's a bad idea) so hopefully a lot of the HDV issues will be side stepped but in the mean time...
Has anyone managed to PTT with the A1P? What settings did you use (camera/suite)? I am Pal 1050i if that makes any difference.
I just want to hear that one lone voice saying yes - I have done it.

No reply but I sorted it out. When you've got all your settings right (easy setup) and the plugs in the right slots and have refreshed the A/V devices and set the print to tape ready to go then it will only show the image in the camera viewfinder when you are actually recording (using record control in the play/edit mode.

  • FCE won't print to tape

This is one of the stranger problems I've seen; hopefully someone knows a solution!
FCE will capture fine, but it will not print to tape. The deck is recognized; it starts recording and everything, but no audio or video shows up. I've even tried a different deck and firewire cable.
I also tried sharing to the deck in imovie, but with the same results.
Is there a preference somewhere that would cause this?
    thanks so much!

You're connecting via firewire and not USB, correct? Have you ever successfully printed to tape using this deck? Do you have a camcorder you could try instead? That would help isolate the problem.

  • HVX200 Won't Print To Tape

I'm running FCP 5.1.3 on a MacBook Pro 17" with 2GB memory - my camera is HVX200. All went perfectly during shoot & edit. Now I can't print to tape.
I followed the helpful posts on hooking up cameras via firewire and got the camera to go as far as showing a still-image (from the canvas) on the LCD. This image changes whenever I stop the timeline (shows whatever frame I've got the timeline on but it doesn't move - the images are still-images only) The audio comes through - and records - perfectly. Camera won't record any images but records audio. The camera is set to MCR/VCR setting, using tape as media.
I removed the FCP preferences. I have Quicktime 7 installed. (Removed all receipts from QT.) I used disk utility to repair permissions.
My reason for print to tape: I have cinema screenings planned and want to project the film from a miniDV source instead of DVD because I think the quality (and reliability) would be better. [Any notes on this concept of mine would also be appreciated.]
By the way, as a test, I hooked the camera up to my PowerBook G4 with FC Express HD and the camera works perfectly as output device. I can print to tape there no problem. But the old computer can't run FCP 5.1.3 which is what I cut my movie on.
I cut the movie without the use of output device just the hard drives, my computer, and an Apple Cinema HD display. I have output successfully to DVD Studio Pro using Compressor.

Your cam settings HAVE to match your sequence
    settings.
If you have the cam set to anything native, as in
24pn or 30pn, nothing will stream over firewire.
You haven't indicated either settings: cam or FCP
    Need to know that.
Thanks for your reply... I'm getting closer to figuring it out. (I'm experimenting with camera settings now...)
I recorded the movie in 720 24pn. Does this mean I can't stream over DV - can't use the hvx200 as print-to-tape device?
My objective is to get image quality that will hold up when it's blown up to movie cinema screen size - the DVDs seem to show their compression when the image is big. Any suggestions on getting movie-house quality?
    Thanks!

  • Publishing to DVD from FCP instead of printing to Tape

How would I be able to put my finished timeline to a DVD from FCP rather than print to tape? as I am new to FCP?

Import > Video (locate your QT file)

  • Cant do anything with print to tape or recording from timeline! Need Help!

I have been trying to get my mac book pro to print to tape using a firewire and a jvc dv deck. when i go through the process and check to see if it actually did it, all i get is black screen with no sound. Then when i try to record straight from the timeline (like i use to do with Avid) i get the same result. Can someone help me out FCP is suppose to be able to do this but i guess not. All my software is up to date and i dont know why this is happening!

Is the JVC DV VTR set to the right input for Firewire? In FCP, look under the View and see how the output is set.

  • Print to Tape Troubles Info

Hi All, I just solved a print to video issue with the help of Joe at Apple support (thanks Joe for the tip on outputting to the HV20!) and a lot of futsing and trying many things. I thought I would share my discoveries in case any of you run into the same problem. I was trying to output a 20 minute HDV sequence to tape for a master HDV tape to give my clients. I couldn't play it out through the timeline because I am using a Canon HV20 camera to output to and it doesn't have a record button to manually start the record, so you have to have the computer tell the camera to start recording. Thus, I had to do print to video option. (This tip was thanks to Joe). But, each time I tried to print to tape the process of "conforming HDV video" would quit at about 10%, other times at something like 56%. I would get an error that read "The specified file is open and in use by this or another application." I had no other programs running and figured it was a render issue. So I rendered again and again before hitting the edit to video. Still the same issue. Finally, here's what seemed to work. I disabled the screensaver (just in case), I created a new sequence, I copied from the old sequence and pasted into the new, I rendered the timeline in sections completely, then I went to print to video, then I sat and prayed. It worked. I'm not sure what was going on, but these are the steps that finally got it to work. If any of you wiser than I in the ways of Final Cut have thoughts, they are welcome. I'm just happy that I finally succeeded and thought I would share in case someone like myself is out there struggling with this issue and wandering the streets muttering to themselves and having their loved ones begin discussing an intervention as was beginning to happen to me.

*Thanks for the thought, but that doesn't make sense to me*
Disabling spotlight for FCP scratch drives (or folders) is a common solution to this kind of problem...
It make sense because the "file is in use by another application" is usually an error that you get if spotlight is indexing files so it's spotlight that is using your file at the moment and it's normal that when you tried again you did not get any error... just because spotlight has ended indexing...
Do a search on the forum and you will find other threads about the same problem...
It's important to tell spotlight not to search your fcp scratch because you could get the same error in critical moments such as when FCP is doing an HDV conforming and sometimes it is possible to loose what was rendered until you got the error (so if you are at 99% after 2 hours waiting it is not a nice situation... don't you think?)...

  • HDV: Printing to Tape

I'm trying to print to tape from a HDV sequence and I get this error:
"The Specified file is open and in use by this or another application"
No other applications are open. I have rendered everything. No other clips or sequences are open. I have closed and re-opened FCP. I have trashed Preferences and restarted my computer. It seems everytime I try to Print to Video this error comes up at different percentage's of conforming video.
I have seen on other forums that people have had this error w/ trying to render. But I haven't found this error associated w/ any Printing to Video w/ HDV.
    Any Insight?
    Thanks,
    -B

In my search of this matter, I found this! (I have made this change and I'm trying to print to tape once more. I'll let ya know if it works)
    Error Message:
File Error: The specified file is open and in use by this or another application. (Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and Final Cut Pro)
    Translation:
If you are using Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and Final Cut Pro, this error message may pop up from time to time. Mac OS X has a feature called Spotlight that runs in the background, indexing the files on your system to improve file searches at a later time. This error message can occur if Spotlight is indexing a folder that contains files Final Cut Pro is rendering. When Final Cut Pro renders files, it caches (the process of temporarily storing data, often in a computer’s CPU, in a location other than the hard drive so you can access it much faster) data, which can cause the error message if Spotlight is indexing in the same location.
    Solution:
According to Apple, simply clicking OK solves the problem, but you can configure Spotlight so the error message doesn’t recur. In the Apple menu, select System Preferences. From the View menu, choose Spotlight and click the Privacy tab. Next, use the finder to open your Final Cut Pro Documents folder and drag the Render Files folder into Spotlight’s Prevent Spotlight From Searching These Locations area.

  • Cant print to tape

    I need help.
I have a dual 2.4 Mackbook pro running FCP 5.1.4. When I try to print to tape from the timeline, I get a black screen. I have audio, and whenever I park the playhead-that frame shows up on my dvx lcd. If I try to print to video-same thing. I record audio and a black screen. Once I stop, that frame shows up on the lcd. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
VIEW>Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
VIEW>Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • HDV print to tape? Help.

I can't seem to get my HDV sequence to print to tape. I am new to the whole HDV thing so bear with me. I am using a sony HVR-V1U.
    Sequence Settings:
    Frame size: 1440x1080
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD 1440 x 1080
Editing Time Base: 29.97 (can't Change)
    QT video Settings
    Compressor: HDV 1080p24
When I go to print to video it says: This sequence is not compatible with print to video.
    Thank you.

Well, all I can think of is, are you trying to print a whole sequence from your time line? If so, make sure the timeline window is activated, but nothing in the time line should be selected.
If you are trying to print just a portion of the time line, you can mark in and out points on the time line itself. Either way, the time line window should be the active one.
You shouldn't have to hit record on the camera; check the 'Start Recording Automatically' box in the Print to Video window.
Also, with the V1U in VCR mode, go in to the REC menu and see if the DV/HDV record in setting is set to AUTO. If it is, set it to HDV only.
Back in the Print to Video window, what happens for me is, I set everything up, and click OK. Then, the render/conform progress bar comes up for a minute; at the end of that, my Mac's screen goes black, and a dialog comes up saying everything is ready to go, and I should click OK to allow the Mac to start playing, and the camera to start recording. When I do that, the green dot and pause bars come up on the camera, which goes into standby mode; a couple of seconds later, the red record dot comes up, and it begins to record.
I don't know if I mentioned this before, but all other firewire cables should be disconnected from your Mac when you're doing this.
It sounds like you have the connection established, if you can see the color bars and slate on the camera LCD; maybe there is an issue with what you have selected in the timeline to play back.

  • 1080i print to tape - output cropped!

    Hi,
I have some 1080i footage and I've printed it to tape (Canon HV20). Now, when I view the tape version on my camcorder screen or my HD TV (via HDMI connector to camcorder) the image is cropped on the edges (no black edge, just seems like the image is zoomed in so I can't see the edges of the image). Is this normal? I was very surprised since I thought 1080i was just that: 1920 by 1080 pixels. I'm wondering if this is some weird effect of the AIC using this 1440 x 1080 amorphous pixels when FCE does the transcoding from AIC to HD for printing to tape???
I thought worrying about "TV Safe" was a thing of the past with HD since 1080 pixels is 1080 pixels. Has anyone else experienced this cropping of video when printing a 1080i project to HD tape?
    Thanks,
    Chad

I'll reply to myself! I found out that my Sharp HDTV is doing a bit of overscanning and indeed some of the image is cropped *by the TV*.
When I print 1080i footage to tape from FCE, and then reimport it back into FCE from the tape all of the image is seen in FCE. So, there is no real loss of the image edges. Thank goodness.
    Thanks,
    Mace

  • How do I print to tape in final cut pro x

I am using final cut pro x, and the previous version of final cut, I could print to tape. Im not sure on how to do this with the newest version, can someone help me please?

    Hello Randy,
This doesn't help you much now, but on the Matrox website it mentions that one of their devices will be able to print to tape from the FCPX timeline...it says "Coming Soon".   Hopefully this is sooner than later.
