Print to video HDV to SD widescreen

I need to print to video (to DVCam tape) my HDV project that was edited frame size 1440X1080 to SD widescreen. When I play out the timeline it is SD letterbox. I am a little confused with this, will it not be 16:9? The HDV thing is somewhat new to me.
After I exported the project to tape, I went to log and capture and it clearly is now SD 720X480 letter boxed. Is it even possible to export 16:9 or anamorphic? Can you tell I am a little lost?
I would appreciate any help with this.
Thanks

Export your sequence to a quicktime file, retaining the HDV sequence settings. Open the resulting quicktime file in compressor, and export using a 16:9 anamorphic SD setting of your choice. Re-import that file into FCP, set up a new sequence to match the 16:9 SD file, and print to DVcam.

  • Print to video HDV not working

I'm having problems with printing my HDV project to the camera.
On a DV project it works, but when I open my HDV project I cannot choose any external video options,
I can log and capture, but not the other way.
I read that the edit to tape function does not work in HDV, but printing to video should.
    Just don't know how
    Maybe someone can help me
    Thank you!

If it's a sony camera involved, select the "Easy Setup" that matches the sequence setting... like 1080i for example, and see if this doesn't clear things up. Make sure the camera is in VTR mode as well. If it's not a Sony camera check the settings it uses here: http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/resources/devicelist.php

  • Print To Video HDV dropping out

When I try to print to video from the computer to a Sony HDV 1080i deck it goes and conforms all the video then I start the process and it works fine until a certain spot and will go to black then back on again etc.
I've tried this a few times and at the same spot will get the problem so I checked to make sure it wasn't the tape, I threw away the rendered files and re-rendered them again. I even saved the project to a quicktime movie which played back looks fine. I tried to use the quicktime file and it stops at the same place everytime.
    Any suggestions?
I even went and rendered all of my sequences, mixed down the audio etc.
    thanks in advance!
Just recently went from FCP 5.1.2 to 5.1.4 I did another project last week and the print to video worked out fine I was wondering if this was a bug in 5.1.4?
    Using FCP 5.1.4

conforming and decoding the mpeg2 HDV stream seems to be the hardest thing for the computer to do. Enough RAM, and a beefy video card will help. I think it's a miracle every time I can get a batch of HDV clips to sucessfully capture. Cutting doesn't go too bad, but I have found outputting native HDV to be nearly impossible.
We had about 3 hours worth of 10-15 minute segments to output, and it took close to 3 weeks of constant effort, outputting one sequence at a time. It would black out, stop playing back, freeze up, put all kind of breaks in the timecode even if you pre-stripe the tape. And all the while it would never, ever alert or abort on dropped frames, timcode breaks, etc.
One of the big problems was rendered material. I used a page peel transition (I know, I know, it was a video cookbook, gimme a break) in the HDV segments. I took the time to set up each one with an image for the "back" of the page from the context of the segment. Rendered playback from the timeline looked fine, but as soon as I went to tape, the background of each peel would display whatever image I had most recently applied - all of them - but only on output. I wound up having to replace the backgound of each one one at a time, export each transition as a self-contained movie, bring it back in as clips and re-sync it with the surrounding media. Luckily there were only about 150 of them to do. All this I started doing after the first solid week of failed output attempts. Even then, any rendered material in my sequences would trigger the dreaded dropouts, freeze frames, skips, and substituted rendered material. So after another couple days of attempts, I wound up exporting self-contained movies of every minute of my output, re-editing them back into sequences, and so finally I was able to output to tape in 10-minute chunks, and it only took 5 or 10 tries for each one. The only reason I really needed to go to tape in the first place was because I found impossible to transcode the HDV to SD mpeg for DVD without field artifacts, and abysmally unacceptible quality. So I recaptured the HDV as DV using the deck's downconvert, which seemed to be the only thing it could do well.
I believe that a faster computer with more RAM and a better video card would have made a big difference. Newer versions of FCP have probably solved a lot of the issues I had with the rendered material. Even so, there are aspects of the long-GOP, mpeg-2 stream aspects of HDV and the way that it negatively affects timecode, deck control, and capture and output, that make the format my last choice for professional editing.
For your situation, I'd recommend exporting a self-contained movie, maybe even try AIC, although it'll have to reconform back down to HDV for FW HDV output. Try all your various Mac voodoo steps before starting output - trash prefs, repair permissions, power-cycle everything. You can borrow my feathered headdress and tortoise-shell rattle if you want.
Sorry I couldn't provide a more definitive answer for you...

  • Sony Z1 Print to video HDV problems

I researched several post on this topic and still can't get this to work. Here's my situation. I have imported and edited my HDV footage in the HDV easy set up in FCP 5. I now want to record this HDV sequence (in HDV format) back to a Sony Master tape using my Z1. I am working in a PAL environment and have dbl checked all my settings on the camera and within FCP and I still can't get the video to output. I just get a blue screen on my camera monitor. Can the Sony Z1 even record back to tape in HDV format? When I have the IN/OUT Rec setting set to HDV, REC MODE is greyed out. Only when I have this set to DV or Auto is the REC MODE open to changes. I have my camera set to VCR and the settings are these on the camera:
IN/OUT Rec: VCR HDV/DV is set to HDV (Thats what I want to record in, yes?)
    REC MODE: Greyed out
    Component is 1080i (Pal)
    iLink is set to off
A/V to D/V Out is off
Final Cut Pro settings: (Audio Video Settings)
Summary Tab: Sequence Preset is: HDV-1080i50
    Capture Preset is HDV
    Device Control: Sony Firewire
    AV Device Tab:
    Playback Output Video: NONE
    Audio: Default
"Different Output for Edit to tape/print to video" Certain settings are greyed out. On this it depends on what my camera is set to in the IN/OUT Rec setting.
Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Been trying to get this to work for days.

  • Can Print to Video HDV sequence

Hello, I am trying to export an HDV sequence to a miniDV tape for broadcast. I am using a Sony GV-HD700 tape deck. I am using Print to Video and it just wont work. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I am having this same problem, and need help urgently. Does anyone know how to resolve this? I can control the deck through FCP and the FireWire cable, and can even initiate automatic recording from FCP, but once it starts playing the content the deck freezes and does not actually record anything.

  • Print to Video HDV

Hello All. So about 6 mos ago I successfully printed video back to my XHA1, since then I haven't been able to connect my XHA1 to FCP at all. I have no problem getting the HV20 to mount. I have tried pretty much every possible set-up and still no luck with the A1. I am trying to print to video and can get neither camera to operate correctly. I have searched the boards and nothing seems to work. LIke I said I have tried so many different configurations w/o success. Does anyone have a tried and true way to print HDV 24F footage back to either a Canon A1 or HV20. Your help would be very appreciated. Thank you.
    Jeremy

Well I stumbled on the answer to my problem, maybe someone else might learn from my mistake. When creating my storyline, I created the sequence with DV settings. All the resulting work was then in DV and it apparently will not convert to HDV without significant loss. My solution was to Easy Setup with HD and AIC 1080i60 then create the new sequence. I imported all my clips into the new sequence timeline. When I go to print to file now, the camera automatically starts to record with transcoding to HDV appearing while the video is copying back to the Tape. Just a newbie mistake but maybe someone else wont make the same mistake.

  • Print to video HDV Sony Z1

    Hi
I am having a problem printing to video. I have my finished sequence and my camera in VCR mode - I have checked with log and capture for communication and I can control the camera fine. The camera acknowledges HDV/DV in and I don't have any playback selected. In the print to video it is set up for HDV1080 50i as is the camera so off we go, ticking the box for automatic starting - I print to video and it says conforming HDV video for about 18 minutes (5 minute sequence). When it gets to having done this (it seems to go through this twice) and all there is to do is press OK, it plays back full screen on the mac but nothing happens on the deck. A fresh tape is in there and the tab is out - what have I done wrong?
    Any suggestions appreciated

Like many before, am struggling with print to video of HDV material captured as HDV 1080i60 to a Sony HDR-HC1 camera. Just can't figure out what settings to use, only get the darn blue screen. Have tried several settings, but no success. Does anyone know the trick? Thanks!

  • Print to video / HDV sequence

I am about to export a hdv sequence to my z1.
I have to make a master tape for broadcasting.
I normally export my commercial hdv work to mpeg2 and make a dvd....
To make a master tape for tv broadcast I need to make a dv camtape.
How do I create a dv cam master with the right 16;9 aspect ratio and the leat quality loss?
I understood that I can not use edit to tape. So print to video is my only option....
I thought of first rendering the hdv sequence to an appropriate format.
Which format should I choose. Is pro res an option?
    Any expert out there.
    Advice hightly appreciated.
    thnx
    xx
    Jane

I think what you should do is put the HDV sequence in a DV sequence, then after rendering just lay it out to tape. You could also send it to compressor for the tranfer, but don't think there's much difference if any, in quality. It should end up letterboxed.

  • Trouble printing to video HDV

We've changed the MacOS for 6.3 version and the final for 7.0 version. It's an Imac. When now I shoot to tape (sony HVR 1500) an HDV108050i sequence the stream brakes. It seems the flow is not continuous. The image distort, go out, go in, TC jump. ( with DVpal sequence I've no problem). Has somebody any idea of what's it's happening. Before in the same machine we had no problem.
    Thanks

It sounds like you don't have a working connection between FCE and your camera. Your cam is recording blank material to tape, that's why you're seeing timecode on the camera's LCD.
Make sure FCE and your camera 'see' each other via their firewire connection. You may need to do View > Video Out > Refresh Video Devices in FCE.
Make sure your camera is set to DV IN (not having this set is a common error), make sure it's in VTR mode and set to Record. You should be able to see your sequence play on the camera's LCD screen whether you are recording to camera or not. Also, you may need to manually begin recording on your camera before you click File > Print to Video > OK in FCE.

  • Hdv print to video not working

    Hi,
I am trying to print to video an HDV sequence, at HDV quality but neither my Macbook Pro nor G5 will see my Sony HVR10P or Canon XHA1. It is true that Final Cut Supports output to HDV decks using Print to Video yes? I can see the HDV Firewire 1440 setting in the External Video menu but it is greyed out.
On both the Camera and Deck I've tried all the different settings to get an HDV input signal, but to no avail. I'm also not getting a DV signal to tape using print to video. I can get the still image of the current frame though.
From what I've read this is supposed to be possible... does anyone have any suggestions? Going a bit nuts here after a couple of days,
    thanks,
    sam

Finally I've cracked it. There are a host of alternative HDV firewire setting in the Audio Video Settings. I was using the Sony HDV firewire setting which it defaulted to after recognising the Sony HDR10P deck. After trying HDV Firewire Basic and NDF to Print to Video there was no warning window "incompatible device" or "this sequence is not copmpatible with HDV Print to Video". It played through with a 2 second delay. However it wasn't stable - a large glitch at the beginning of the recording and no audio came through. Then tweaked to HDV Firewire 25fps Basic and it kept coming up with "run out of memory" just after conforming. It seems it IS possible but my systems are having teething problems and I should upgrade to FCP 6 - hopefully memory issues will be resolved there.
    Thanks..

  • HDV Print to Video

Have read all threads for the last year on this, and have not been able to Print to Video. It starts fine, transfers via FW to my Sony FX-1. After about 2-4 min. it starts freezing for a split second, then jumps forward, only to freeze again every few seconds. If I have mirror on desktop on, the video on the desktop does NOT freeze, but plays normal. I have no problems capturing hdv video. Here is a list of the things I have tried.
    1. Deleted FCP preferences, and rebooted.
    2. Shut off energy saver and screen saver.
    3. Tried both FW connections and disconnected ALL other FW (400 & 800) devices.
    4. Tried different FW cables and 3 different cameras.
    5. Exported the project out as a single QT HDV file and imported that to the timeline.
    6. Mixdown audio. The timeline and all setting are 1440x1080 hdv & 1080i60.
    7. The single QT HDV file is saved on an internal SATA drive with >200 GBs free, not with FCP, OSX
I would be willing to try any suggestions. Thanks for any help.

About the only thing left to do is a total rebuild of your startup disk I'd think... HDV isn't my favorite format... but if you HAVE To print back to tape, you've not much of a choice than to edit with it natively. Hey, if you've not done this in a while, it's time to do so in any event. I do it at least every few months with my own systems, and also at the school I teach at part time, there's about 70 FCP stations. We do it every semester and it serves us extremely well. Stable systems each with about 10 or so Users on each... no crashing, and all works as advertised.
FWIW... few need to record back to HDV for any reason... It's not a deliverable format for broadcast in most all instances, and it was intended to be a consumer format... see the original press release from Sony on this years ago... so running it in a Pro NLE like FCP isn't going to be a flawless thing. I'll wager that iMovie does it better! (Though I've never tried it myself) Most pros deliver HDCAM if going to broadcast, and we don't edit HDV natively. Instead, we capture it as ProRes, then use a card like a Kona 3 or an IoHD to turn it into uncompressed HD for delivery.
If after a totally clean installation of the system startup disk still prevents you to print to video with HDV, I'd suggest you fill out a feedback form in the FCP menu. Apple's FCP team reads and logs every single one of these I'm quite sure. They don't read these forums in fact much. They are for user to user discussion.
    Hope this helps you.

  • HDV Print to Video - Video Doesn't Display or Record on Camera

I am editing HDV 1080i60 on FCP 5.1.3 and when I try to Print to Video, the camera screen displays "HDV in" and "i.LINK" but remains blue and does not allow me to press the record button. However, with the same camera (HDR-HC1) and using Final Cut Express I am able to print to video (although this is annoying because it has to convert to Apple Intermediate Codec).
Has anyone else had a similar problem?

OK, I have discovered the problem, and it's a doozy.
Her HDV sequence was set for 1280 X 1080, HDV 1080 Compressor, rather than 1440 X 1080. We have no clue how that happened, but it did.
Here's what I had her do last night when she was creating it: She changed the Easy Setup to HDV 1080i60, then created a new sequence. Then she went to the original DVCPRO HD sequence and did a Command-C to copy, then back to the new HDV 1080i60 sequence and Command-V to paste.
This morning, after I discovered the 1280 problem, I did the exact same steps and the new sequence was 1440 X 1080 HDV. I called her and had her do the exact same thing again, and now that new sequence is 1440 X 1080 HDV.
She is now rendering and conforming. I had her make sure ALL of the render bars were checked in Sequence > Render All, and that she chose Both audio and video. This should do it.
Now, the really tough part. I've got to re-read the thread and choose only two Helpful posts. Why can't we have as many as we need??????

  • HDV Print to Video, My Settings

I've seen several posts here about problems getting Print To Video to work with HDV. I just did this and the results were great. So, at the risk of being redundant, I'm going to post what I did.
Camera: Sony FX1, captured using the camera over Firewire.
Captured into FCP using Easy Setup HDV 1080i60
All the footage was nighttime fast action sports.
In the sequence I slowed almost all the footage down to 33.33%, with Frame Blending turned on.
    No dissolves, all simple cuts.
No other filters, motion, overlays, graphics, etc.
    Sony FX1 Menu Settings:
    IN/OUT REC
    VCR HDV/DV > AUTO
    REC MODE > SP
    COMPONENT > 1080i/48Oi
    iLINK CONV > OFF
    TV TYPE > 16:9
    A/V TO D/V OUT > OFF
Final Cut Pro Settings: (as viewed from MENU>FINAL CUT PRO>AUDIO VIDEO SETTINGS...
    Summary Tab
    Sequence Preset: HDV - 1080i60
    Capture Preset: HDV
    Device Control: Sony HDV Firewire
    Video Playback: None
    Audio Playback: None
    Sequence Presets Tab
    HDV - 1080i60
    Capture Presets Tab

    Device Control Tab
    Sony HDV Firewire
    A/V Devices Tab
    Playback Output
    Video: None
    Audio: Default
"CHECKED" Different Output for Edit to Tape/Print to Video
    Video: HDV (1440 x 1080) 30 fps
    "CHECKED" Mirror on Desktop
    Audio: Default
"NOT CHECKED" Do not show External A/V ...
"NOT CHECKED" Do no show warning ...
Before you Print To Video, make sure you have the Sequence in the Timeline selected. Otherwise you might get an error message. Also, make sure the Camera has a tape and its sitting at the spot you want to print to. (FCP will control the camera)
    Then I choose: MENU>FILE>PRINT TO VIDEO ...
    Leader: Nothing checked here
Media: Print In to Out (which was set on the Timeline) nothing else checked
    Trailer: "CHECKED" Black 5 seconds
    "CHECKED" Automatically Start Recording
After you click OK, your sequence will most likely go through a Conforming process, which conforms the sequence as required for HDV. (different from a render) Then the screen will go black, and you can click OK, FCP will cue up the camera, put it in record mode and start the print. (export)
One note: I thought I had also checked MENU>VIEW>EXTERNAL VIDEO>ALL FRAMES. However, when I was done, I checked this menu again and it was set to OFF. So, to be honest I don't know if I did check it and it went back to off, or it was not in fact checked. (lots of messing around prior to getting it to work, sorry)

wish I could get it to work consistantly for my GR-HD1 from JVC. terrible that one of the first cameras on the market isn't fully supported by FCP5.
I have to fiddle around endlessly to get the camera recognised. Usually in Camera mode and then quickly switch the Cam back to VCR mode after FCP recognizes it.
The people at the Sony Store here in San Francisco are so rude and ignorant that I will die before buying a camera from them. I went in to buy 3 cameras for my company a month ago and couldn't get any service. The only one paying attention to me was the security guard who kept coming over to tell me that I couldn't touch the camera in the display. I asked the sales staff I finally got to help me a question about the HDV cameras, and he just dissappeared. Never to return. Eff them.
I will stick to JVC even if it means changing my shop over to PCs. Which has been happening a lot around me lately. Video production people fed up with Apple refusing to support equipement. PC software is fully compliant to the entire spectrum of video out there. The blessings of being an open format I guess.
But, I love my G5 and would miss it.

  • *** HDV print to video stutters and never gets going.

I'm working in HDV and trying to print my project to video and am having absolutely no success. I've checked and my camera IS connected. I conformed to HDV before choosing file>print to video and then DID to the latter.
When I press record on my camera and return on the keyboard it looks like it starts going, but the minute my sequence starts playing the time on the camera starts and stops and nothing gets printed to the tape.
Can anyone suggest what to do here? I really need to print this project back to tape.......
    Thanks in advance!

I would say yes set the camera to HDV recording, and many times the ilink setting is not set to HDV so the signal is coming to the camera in HDV but the camera is set to and looking for DV.
You control the ilink/firewire port manually on the Z1, however any changes must be made while the FW cable is disconnected.
Try this, turn off the camera, disconnect the FW cable, turn on the camera in VTR mode, open the menu to Rec In/Out, find i-link conv and set to OFF for HDV (or ON for DV), then back out of the menu and turn off the camera and connect the FW cable, and turn it back on. By turning off the camera it will insure safe FW connections so there is not possibility of shorting this port.
These step will properly set the deck up to receive HDV.
    Good Luck
    Z1
