Print to video vs. edit to tape

what is the preferred format? i've been using print to video
but i hear edit to tape is a lot better.
did a search but not much came up.
any comments?

Print to video just outputs the timeline to tape...to possibility of timecode lock. It preps the cut then prompts you to press record.
Edit to Tape gives deck control. And it allows for locking the deck to output to your timelines timecode...with the show starting at hour 1;00;00;00.

  • HV20 and Print to Video or Edit to Tape?

Has anyone figured out the workflow for final cut pro and getting video back out to tape using
    "print to video"
    or
    "edit to tape"
with "edit to tape" I get an "unable to initialize" error where it tells me to check the audio/video settings.
    with "print to video"
I'm using the record/pause function from page 71 of the manual, but the hv20 doesn't see to see a signal. Also the playback on the mac is interesting. it's in the middle of the screen, and not showing the full resolution..
basically I'm just trying to dub an hdv tape.
    thanks!
    -Josh

ok, the only things listed in the audio/video settings are the ntsc and pal firewire devices.
when I try to set it to hdv 1080i60 firewire basic, I get the error:
unable to locate the following external devices:
    HDV (1440 x 1080) 60i
but the camera is both connected... and on. Is there a reason it would see the camera as an SD device instead of a HD device?

  • Print to video vs edit to tape - which to use?

I'm new to FCP. I want to output to a tape that has not been entirely blacked or striped. Should I use Edit to Tape assemble edit? Or will Print to Video work?

Thanks. I just read the user manual PDF and think that is the way I am going to go. I want to start at 01:00:00;00 and be frame accurate.

  • Edited on MacPro, needs to Write Video to Edit-to-Tape on PowerMac G5?

Anyone else run into this issue?
I edit programs for broadcast on my MacPro at home (same version & settings as Final Cut software on systems at the office). Everything right up through rendering is done on my home system.
I bring it in via G-raid(firewire800) to one of the office systems with decks for printing, both of which are PowerMac G5s.
Open project - timelines look/play rendered as they did when I finished them at home.
Edit to Tape - after I drag/drop the sequence to Insert in the Edit-to-Tape window, Final Cut then proceeds to "write video" for at least 45 minutes as if it's re-rendering the entire sequence.
Through a TON of elimination & troubleshooting, we discovered this error is consistent when our other MacPro in the office gets the same result when an edited/rendered sequence from it is brought over to the G5s.
    What are your thoughts?

I have often found that the rendering FCP needs to do just before an Edit to Tape to be very inconstient. I wonder if it could be writing the render to a different drive on the MacPro other that the G-Raid. I also wonder if it might be rendering to RAM for output.... I've never heard of this so it's just a theory. Do you do a Sequence > Render Only > Mixdown? Might try that. Also do a forum search for "Edit to Tape" as there are many topics on the subject.
    And welcome to the forum.

  • Print to Video "beep" also on tape

    Hi,
I'm using final cut express and I have captured some movies without any problem to my harddisk. Now I made a compilation and want it to print to video (using the menu option "Print to Video". When I do that, my camcorder records the sound and the image. That's oke. The problem is that a continous beep is also being recorded. My ToneLevel is -60dB.
Questions: How can I "Print to Video" without that annoying beep ?
    I'm using FCE4, on OSX10.5 and a MacBook, 2Gb, capturing on a DV camera.
    Thanks,
    Rokesh

The Command+R worked on the Sequence.
I tried to "print to video" an imported DV file (so no sequence, but directly).
Thanks for all the help. I finally got it working.
First I created a sequence, than dragged the movie on it, then Command +R, then print to video.

  • Print to Video Does not Work

I am running Final Cut pro 5. I am trying to send my time line to a mindv deck using print to video. I have a monitor hooked up to the deck to watch what is being recorded. I set my in and out points in the time line and and select print to video from the menu. I do not have any of the boxes checked, because i have black and color bars already in my time line. I select in/out and hit ok. The screen goes black and my video shows up in the middle playing, but nothing shows up on my monitor and when i watch the tape that i am recording to, there is nothing on there as well. The device control is working, because I can capture footage off of the deck, but it seems to not be getting a signal when I am trying to print to tape. I have also tried edit to tape, and I press record on the deck after setting up the sequence and then I play the sequence, and nothing is still recorded onto the tape. For both edit to tape and print to tape, everything is working, but nothing is being recorded onto the tape. I have also tried hooking up my sony camera to be used to record, but that doesn't work either. Any help would be great thanks!
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Make sure the deck has it's input selection set to firewire for starters...
I'm not clear if this is part of the problem, but FCP 5.0.4 will run better in Tiger.
But if you can see external video, you should also be able to print to video or edit to tape... if you can't then keep troubleshooting your Firewire connection... got a different cable to try? Can you capture video OK?

  • Printing to video error

I am using the latest version of Final Cut Pro. Whenever I finish a video, I print it back to a DV so I have an original. It continues to play on the computer and I do not see any errors when it plays on the computer. However, sometimes on the DV, the audio cuts out and sometimes both audio and video cuts out, but then comes back. Sometimes both audio and video come backa and sometimes only video.

Rebecca, would you mind elaborating on your hardware setup? You list your machine as a G4 - does that mean PowerMac, PowerBook, iMac, eMac, iBook?
Where does your media reside? (internal drive? external drive?) Please speak on how large - and how full - your media drive(s) is/are as well. What else - if anything - is on your FireWire bus? (how many hard drives? any other devices [like an iSight or an iPod]?)
Also, how are you getting back to tape? Print To Video? Edit To Tape? Or are you simply outputting from Timeline?
Are the two dropped frame warning in your User Preferences - 'Report dropped frames during playback' and 'Abort ETT/PTV on dropped frames' - checked? (If not, try a Print To Video with the warnings enabled.)
While I think this is some type of hardware issue - since you're not getting errors from within FCP - but if it is an FCP issue, speak on the contents of this sequence - any nested sequences, or large still images, or 44.1khz audio files that could cause drop outs like that?

  • Print to Video Error msg: audio and vide devices may not match

When I attempt to print to video (using a Sony DV deck that has werved me well for years) I receive the message:
"The selected audio and video devices may not match:
    -Apple FireWire NTSC (720 X 480)
Please verify that the audio and video outputs are externally routed to the intended device(s).
    Do you want to proceed?"
I tried proceeding, and the video images output to the tape but without a sound track.
What to do? I must deliver a tape to my client!
I recently did a software update to 10.4.6. Could that be part of the problem?
Of did some setting change somewhere without my knowing it, and I need to reset it, if so what?
    Thanks in advance

    Hello!
Thank you for this. I did check the audio playback settings and it was NOT set to audio follows video. I then CHANGED it as you have kindly instructed. The audio video settings box you mention was NOT checked, so I didn't need to do anything there.
I then tried o launch Print to Video (not Edit to Tape) and sadly, the same error message occurred. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
I am running FCP 4.5, recently upgraded to OS 10.4.6
    Thanks in advance.
    Hey Pamela,
Have you been monitoring externally this whole time?
If you have, and you've been getting external audio
and video, then this is probably a case of a
    setting being off somewhere.
First, check your View > Audio Playback
setting. It should be set to Audio follows
    Video.
Second, press Option-Command-Q to bring up the
Audio/Video Settings dialog. Click on the right-most
tab (A/V Devices) then confirm that the box for 'Use
Different output for Edit To Tape/Print To Video' is
    not checked.
And please confirm that you're doing a Print to Video
and not an Edit To Tape. I ask because the only time
that I can remember getting this message is when I've
tried to do an Edit To Tape and didn't drag the
correct sequence from the browser (if I remember
correctly, I accidently dragged a sequence that was
    also open in timeline).

  • Help with timecode and video freeze during Print to Video

This has happened twice in last couple months. Timeline is usually around 22 - 23 minutes. At some point during playback to HDV deck using Print to Video via FireWire, the timecode freezes and so does the video for approx. 2-3 seconds, then resumes on 2-3 seconds later in the timeline. Everything is still in perfect sync. Playing back the timeline on computer reveals nothing. Please, does anyone have any suggestions at all??

You should be mixing down the audio before you record to tape, try that if you haven't done it first...
If that fails, export a self contained QuickTime movie, then see if it doesn't print to video or edit to tape better.
Use the fastest drive you have for the QT movie's playback, and it should be something other than your startup disk.

  • Having trouble with audio edit to tape, print to video ok

Hi all, please go easy on me, this is my first post.
I am having difficulty getting audio on to tape via 'edit to tape'.
The hardware is blackmagic decklink extreme, feeding component video and analoge audio to a UVW-1800P.
I can do a print to video on a crash record and the audio works that way, but edit to tape does not.
I have tried both deck link and built in audio in the audio settings and the FCP a/v settings, seperate and ganged output settings, I have set the insert settings to 2 channel Sony, reloaded the decklink drivers.
The irritating thing is the audio is there whilst cutting, but as soon as I try edit to tape there is complete silence. The important thing is that it worked a few weeks back but does not now, it must be a setting?
Thanks in advance for your help.
This machine I am working with this week is an Intel MacPro running FCP 5.1.2 and Mac OS 10.4.8

    G5 Dual 2GHz-Blackmagic Decklink Pro, G3 with Sonnet G4 upgrade   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I had this same problem and this resolved it for me:
-Go to your "Settings" icon and click on the "General" tab.
-About 2/3 way down the page you will see "Use side switch to:" - make sure "mute" is checked rather than "lock rotation."
-Then make sure the side switch, located next to the volume toggle switch on the side of your ipad, is moved to the right (no red dot showing).
My audio worked fine in embedded videos after I did those two things.  Hope it works for you.

  • Which is higher quality, edit to tape or print to video on digital betacam?

Which is gives higher quality results, edit to tape or print to video on digital betacam?

They should be the same quality.
Edit to tape will allow you control over making sure your program starts at 01:00:00;00.
Neither will send your timecode from the timeline. Edit to tape allows you to assemble your program starting at an in point set on your tape.

I am not really sure how to set the camera in this VTR mode... I have tried in the settings to set it in webcam mode... and I have tried without... and I dont have a button or setting called VTR, only a *PLAY' option or a 'FILMØ option....
My A/V settings are FireWire PAL and DA PAL 48khz ... however have no ide what that means or if these should be changed...?

    OS 10.4.11
I use the version FCP 2
Please help me out, I am really without any good suggestions how to proceed!

You're going to have to use a dvd authoring program. Burning the seq to a dvd qill just create a qt movie on a dvd data disc. It won't create a dvd video disc that plays in a dvd player.
Export from fcp a QT movie, current settings, self-contained. Use Anamorphicizer (http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Video/Anamorphicizer.shtml) to make imovie recognise it as 16:9. Then import that file to idvd.
Or you can drop your 16:9 sequence into a new 4:3 sequence to letterbox it, then you can do the export as above but skip the anamorphicizer step.
It's better to use compressor on the original 16:9 sequence and then use dvdsp to author, but if you've never used dvdsp it's a big program to get your head round.
    The export can be done in two ways;
    1. Export from fcp using 'export using compressor'.
    2. Export a QT ref/self-contained movie and import that into compressor.
    3. Export a QT movie and import it direct into DVDSP.
The second option will take longer initially (if you use the self-contained option) but will then allow compressor to work in the background, the first option will tie up fcp for the duration of the encode.
Once in compressor use one of the 16:9 dvd presets, depending on the duration of the movie and the quality you want. Don't try to adjust the settings. If your movie is 31 mins just use the shortest option (i think it's 60min) and make sure you select the m2v video and ac3 audio options. If you just select the mpeg 2 video you'll only get video, as you've discovered.
Open dvdsp and create your opening menu and a video track, import the movie file, add it to the video track, and then add the audio to the track as well. Then add any chapter submenus you may want.

  • Edited AVCHD, burned as a blue ray. Is a print to video possible ?

As far as I understand AVCHD from my Panasonic TM300, via log and transfer is decoded to apple codec. Then I work on those files. After editing I can export to quick time movie and then (using for example toast) burn it as a blue ray disc.
    All good so far ?
Do I have a full HD (1920x1080) blue ray disc ?
Second question is: what is the way to save my work for future ?
Before Panasonic TM300 I was using Sony HDR HC3 and after editing I was just printing to video which means printing to mini DV tape using this camera. If I clear my hard drive I always had a copy of edited movie in HD on the tape.
Now I have Panasonic TM300 which record in avchd. Can put edited video back to camera using print to video option ? Will it code that video back to Mpeg4 and upload that to camera hard drive ? or it only works with a tape and I need to use old camera to back up my edited video.
    thanks

Yes, with a 20 minutes limit and fixed predesigned menus from toast. The resulting BR DVD will play fine in Sony PS3. I don't know about other BR players.

    No, 1280X720 only.

No print to tape operation with AVCHD.
As HC3 is HDV, theorically it should print to tape after a conforming process transcoding AIC to HDV, but I never try it. Be prepare for looooong processing time (6 to 8 time the lenght of sequence).

  • Video Level Shift During Edit To Tape

I have a program that was originated in 720p-24 using the Panasonic HDX-200. During the color correction process, I adjusted the output video levels and saturation. I also added the 'Broadcast Safe' clamping filter. When I play the video back in the suite, everything's legal.
But when I edit to tape... the video levels are back up above 100 IRE. Am I missing a setting somewhere?
