Printed document page number cross-references

Is it possible to export webhelp to Printed Document - MS
Word with page numbers taking the place of hyperlinks? Must the
page numbers be added after the printed document is created?
If so, can the InsertPagRefs macro insert page numbers across
a multifile document?
I anticipate exporting to printed documents consisting of
multiple files with pictures inserted by reference. I need
cross-reference page numbers that look like internal page
references.
If a master document is not recommended for a large manual,
how is a large manual to be handled? I intend not to use Word as a
base for single sourcing and to create RD fields and files for an
*input* document. I intend to use webhelp as the single source so I
can use RH 7 conditional text and mutiple TOCs to produce multiple
documents and document formats!

No but you can easily add them afterwards. There is a macro
on my site that does exactly that.

Your refer to a "large manual". How big is "large"?

Sorry for the slow reply, I needed to check with someone
about a macro they had but it is not one that will do what you
    want.
Is page numbering a requirement or do you would you be happy
with working links? If working links would be sufficient, there is
a macro on my site under Print Issues but it relies on the string
for the link being exactly the same as the string for the target.

  • Hyperlinks to page number cross-refs, etc.

I'm considering whether to upgrade to RH 7 or a different
product. When generating WebHelp to printed doc, can RH 7
standalone convert hyperlinks to page number cross-refs? Requires
    setup or automatic?
I'm assuming that RH 7 requires generating printed doc to
Word. Right? By any chance can it convert directly to PDF with the
same output result as to Word?
In RH 7 is the Generate Printed Doc much improved, and in
    which ways, from RH 5?
    Thanks.

    D'oh! My bad!
I thought what was being referred to was "out of the box" behavior of X5 with no special macros applied.
    Perhaps I'm remembering it wrong.
I always defer to anything print related to Peter. And I really must get used to the fact he's really not asleep in England at 12:11 AM now but is wide awake in Colorado!

  • On Yosemite how do I get Pages to print the page number on every page, not just on alternate ones?

I  only changed from Windows to an iMac earlier this year (now on Yosemite), but cannot get Pages to print the page number on every page;  it seems only to do it on alternate pages.

    Jeff,
I do NOT understand your positive attitude. If someone has a problem with Numbers in Yosemite, you tell them to resurrect a pre-Yosemite version of Numbers.
The VIEW LAYOUT command is basic and critical to Numbers; how could Apple over-look such an important function in Yosemite ... ???

  • Printing by page number

    Hi,
I'm working on a book, divided into five sections. For ease of manipulation, the sections are all separate documents, but the page numbers in each section start relative to the book as a whole, i.e., the first page in section two is '53'. So far so good, and the document as a whole transferred with no difficulty from Appleworks. In Appleworks if I wanted to then print, for editing say, pages 58 through 61, I would choose print in the file menu, fill in 58 and 61, and the appropriate pages would print. Pages, however, seems to insist on numbering the printed pages starting at page one in each section (document), so to print 58 to 61, say, I would fill in 6 - 9. This is awkward and Appleworks seemed better in this regard, am I missing something?
    Thanks for any help,
    Ray

I apologize, I never got the described behavior.
I inserted the string "Page # " in the footer
then I used the "Insert page number" feature.
When I print a selected range of pages, say 20 thru 25, I get the correct "Page #20, Page #21, Page #22, Page #23, Page #24, Page #25" at the bottom of the pages.
Of course, during the print task, the driver "tell me" that it is printing page 1, page 2 … but I am able to understand that it means "I'm printing the 1st asked page, the 2nd …"

  • Is there any way to print document pages according to their master?

I have a large document with multiple master pages in use. At different instances I often need to print only document pages that are "A" Master, "B" master, etc. Is there any way to do this, rather than entering the page numbers manually?

Might be scriptable. Ask over in InDesign Scripting

  • Officejet Pro 8620 cannot print without page number, date and time stamps

I have just bought this printer and spent a few days trying to get to grips with it. I managed to solve one problem when I could not access the printing preferences by reinstalling the driver.  I cannot remove the print page number and date and time stamps from a print. Please help!

I have managed to solve this by changing page settings. These were oddly reset when the printer was installed.

  • How to print logical page number in TOC of report

My report has three sections - header, main, trailer.
after each group break in the main section the page number is saved using the srw.get_page_num(pageNum).
this records are used to build the toc in the trailer section.
Problem: srw.get_page_num delivers only the logical pagenum of the section,
means if the header section spans more than one page (for example 2), the main section starts at physical pagenum 3.
If I don't know how many pages my header contains I never have the real page number in my toc, beacuse i have to add the number of "header pages" to the saved pagenum of the main section to compute the "physical pagenum".
Is there a possibility to save the physical pagenum in the header section (in a trigger) ?

Thats my huge problem - i can not calculate the number of pages
nor in the main section neither in the header section.
The problem is not to know how many pages are in the trailor section.
I have to know, how many pages are in the header section without to start multiple the report.
If I have this number i can add it to the "logical" page number" of the main section to get the physical page number of the report.
the page numbers of the main section are available.

  • Printing Document Page Numbers in Pages '09

    Hello again my friends;
With Peter's help I got my document numbered correctly (with i,ii,iii etc in first section) and (1,2,3 etc in second section).
Now I can't seem to get them print out on each page, both sets of numbers are located in the footer of each pages respectively.
    Any suggestions?

Sounds like your printer doesn't print to the edge of the paper and you have the Footer in the non-printing area.
To test the extent of your printable area, cover the entire page with a box filled with grey and print that.
Tom solve your footer problem raise it up from the bottom of the page into the printable area.

  • Cross-references in a different document

We have used FrameMaker for years (currently Version 7.1). We are in the process of switching to InDesign (CS5).
One current project is a print catalog where I put each section in a different document. One of the sections is a list of book titles. Another section is an index of authors and books by each author, with a page number cross-referencing each title with its entry in the title section.
In FrameMaker, when I open the author document, I can update all the references at once by pointing to the title document.
I don't see an easy way to do this in InDesign. Is it possible to update all cross-references at once?
Furthermore, in researching the problem on the Internet, I came across multiple comments that suggested that it's not a good idea to use cross-references across multiple documents in InDesign. Is this true, or was it only a problem in previous versions of InDesign?
    Thanks for the help!

I think you should head over to the scripting forum and ask over there. Dave Saunders has just finished a huge project with thousnads of cross-refs to external docs and he might have some scripting ideas that would help you.

  • Cross-references go to facing page when PDF'd

Is there a workaround for this?  Mac, CS5.5.  (I also have CS6 but still can't get the file to open!!)
I have a large book file, with facing pages.  Cross-references throughout, exporting to PDF via PDF (Print) to get separate pages rather than spreads.
The resulting bookmarks are all correct, but the cross-references go to what would be the right hand page instead of the noted page.  So, if the cross-reference is supposed to go to left page 84, it actually goes to right page 85.  That works fine if the PDF is viewed in 2-up view, or exported as full spreads, but not in single page view.
Is there a solution?  Or is it fixed in CS6?

Yes. There are five in one book. All the page links lead to pages in documents within the book.
The Contents page is in one InDesign document. It has links in it to pages within the other four InDesign documents.
Currently, clicking on the links in the exported PDF of the book takes you to page 1 - except for links to pages within the same InDesign document, and one link on the Contents page which leads to the correct page (that link is set up in the same way as the others).
EDIT: BTW - I will be leaving work in about 30 minutes, so I won't be able to try out any fixes until tomorrow, about 10am (London, UK).
UPDATE: When I checked the broken hyperlinks in Acrobat Professional, all of the page links that led to the cover were set to go to page 0. But in the InDesign document, they're all set to go to the correct page.

  • How to print page number in Pages

Please help. I have inserted the page number in my document and I see it the print preview, but when I print it just doesn´t print the page number.

It sounds like you have the page number too close to the edge of the paper and your printer simply does not print to the edge.
Test how much of the page your printer prints, by covering a page with a colored object from edge to edge and seeing how much is clipped off.

  • Display cross-references' linked documents filename in the xref panel

Our company creates technical manuals consisting of five chapters, all named the same, except with a different prefix. For example the "ABC Widget" manual has an introduction chapter named "ABC 1 - Introduction", a safety chapter named "ABC 2 - Safety", etc. Many times I re-use documents for creating subsequent manuals using the "Save As" command. So the "ABC 1 - Introduction" chapter would be saved as "EFG 1 - Introduction" for the "EFG Widget" book. For all the internal xrefs it saves a whole lot of time since all of the xrefs are preserved. But for cross-document references it creates a problem. For example, if the "ABC 1 - Introduction" chapter has a xref to "ABC 2 - Safety", when I save the Introduction chapter as "EFG 1 - Introduction" it will still retain the xref to "ABC 2 - Safety".
Right now, the only way to see if there are xrefs pointing to latent docs, is to check each one manually. If the xref panel displayed a column indicating the filename of the linked documents, I would be able to tell at a glance if that xref was pointing to the wrong document.
    Thank you.

    Hi Van,
I fear, I expressed myself not very clear. I try again.
We have DITA structured documents. However, lastest status often was saved in the FM document. The xml documents often are not representing the final status.
When I open the FM8 document in FM9 everything looks pretty good.
But: When I want to save the document as xml with FM9, I'm getting errors regarding the cross references.
The cross references which were created in FM8 - doesn't matter, if a valid xml document or a FM document - always look the same.
(BTW: I don't think that in structured documents cross references always refer to elemts with a unique ID.)
example from xml which was created with FM8:
    <xref href = "#id08B4A0R30E9" type = "fm:Chapter">"..."</xref>
the only difference in the FM document is that the element is called fm-xref there, as it's not an external url.
in FM9 those cross references are totally different.
example from xml which was created in FM9:
    <xref href = "#id08B4A0R30E9" class = "- topic/xref">"..."</xref>
When saving the FM documents with the cross references from the first example as xml in FM9 (we don't have FM8 anymore), I get an error that the attribute type is not defined.
When having a xml document that was last changed with FM8 and opening/ saving this with FM9, there is no error.
At the moment I do not know how to solve this issue.
And also I'm not sure weather the same problem might accour again with change from FM9 to FM10 or else.
It is a great effort to make new cross references just because we upgraded from FM8 to FM9. (And of course always at most inconvienent time.)
As we are thinking of upgrading to FM10, it would be good to know before, if there are any similar issues to expect.
Or if there is an fix for FM9 or FM10 to avoid this at all.
    Regards,
    Anna
