Printer and scanner calibration

Hi,
I have a DTP94 colorimeter (AKA Monaco XR Pro), a Canon iP1600 printer and an Epson Perfection 4990 Photo scanner (with built-in slide/negative scanner). What do I need to buy, in terms of hardware and software, to calibrate the printer and scanner?
S.
EDIT: I also have the latest ColorEyes Display Pro software demo installed. Does this apply at all?

Monaco's EZColor software, supplied with the DTP94, actually offers scanner and printer profiling, but only in versions 2.50 upwards
I hadn't mentioned that one because I knew it was no longer for sale. I think it was dropped a couple of years ago.
I'm trying to find someone who may profile these devices for me for a small fee, though this is also proving difficult...
I have the equipment and software to do that. The only real issue creating printer profiles long distance is making sure the targets get printed correctly. Depending on the printer drivers, and sometimes the printer itself, it sometimes isn't even possible.
or (in one very surprising case) don't profile their equipment at all
That is very surprising. I'd sure like to know how they can get any kind of consistent and accurate color between monitor/printer/camera/scanner.
Most places though don't waste time trying to profile digital cameras for a couple of reasons. One is that it's the rare camera (usually only on the very high end) that will take an untagged image. No profile embedded, like Adobe RGB; no defined white point color, nada. Necessary to create a profile. RAW is untagged, but then when you open such a file in Photoshop; say from a Nikon D700, you have to choose a color space to tag it with while opening the image from the RAW plug-in to the PS interface.
The other reason is that profiles are very specific to the method used to create them. Say you profile your monitor. Then you change the brightness or contrast controls. Your profile is now useless since the monitor is no longer at the settings used to create the profile. With a digital camera, if you create an accurate profile, it's only good as long as you never move the camera, change the lens or zoom setting, or move any of the lighting. As soon as you do, you invalidate the profile.
Here's another option. Much better than the ColorMunki to do your monitor and printer profiles. Not as inexpensive as the ColorMunki, but not empty your pockets expensive like an i1iSis/ProfileMaker 5 or Monaco Profiler bundle. X-Rite's i1Xtreme. The only drawback is that you have to choose an i1 spectrophotometer with or without a UV cut filter. It's fixed in the main unit depending on which one you buy and can't be changed. I mention this because having the UV filter is necessary to create printer profiles that will produce correct color output by cutting the UV brighteners in many papers. Colors tend to come out odd otherwise. As far as a monitor, different people at X-Rite have told me two different things. One said you should have a non UV cut unit for monitors. The other said it doesn't make any difference.
The other drawback to the i1 Pro (XTreme) bundle is that there is still no scanner profiling in it.

Read the user manual that came w/the printer/scanner, contact Epson to see if you need to update your scanner drivers to work in Mavericks also check Software Update.  Check out the following links:

  • Best printer and scanner for a MBP?

Seeking recommendations for a printer and scanner for a MB Pro.

Check for ones that say they are Macintosh or OS X compatible, which will be almost all of them.
Cannon and Epson tend to deliver Apple support better than HP.  I have had new HP printers and scanners that were supported on Windows but not on Macs.  I had to return the scanner.  I have also had external HP disk drives that worked on Windows but not Macs.
The rest is personal choice.  Less expensive printers tend to print more slowly.  I prefer printers with wireless connections.  Most have that these days.

  • Mac compatible mobile printer and scanner

We have a macbook pro and macbook air and need a good mobile printer and scanner while traveling.  any suggestions?

For travel printer you can't beat the Canon Pixma IP100. However a printer-scanner combo you might look at HP envy series. The scanner makes the unit much bigger.

  • MP460 Canon printer and scanner   : Cannot communicate with scanner.

Impossible to scan with a MP460 Canon printer/scanner. Always same message : Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off. Check status. Scanner driver will be closed. 155.0.0.
I click 'ok' then i have the message Scan failed.
Found a post about the same problem with the MP470 model.
Did what is told in this post (installation of new scanner driver from the Canon site) But always the same problem. Who could help ??
    Thanks

    Hi Pahu
Many thanks for your quick and relevant answer.
Are your sure I have to look in the software section of the profiler ?? I don't find anything about scanner or printer in this section. I see the MP Navigator, which is the soft I use for scanning.
In the hardware section, I only see an entry for the printer and the driver is the 5.8.3 version.
Although the driver I installed yesterday stands in a file named 'mp460osxsd12131ej7.dmg' (thus for me should be the 12.13.1 version)
Oops I see now that my post is not in the correct forum, since my MacBook is in 10.5.8, not in 10.6
    Thanks for your help !!

  • Will my printer and scanner work with the new intel mac?

My first post.. so I hope i am in the right place! (was in wrong place last attempt!)
I want to buy the new intel...but I would like to know for sure if it will work with my scanner and printer.
Printer is Epson Stylus Photo 2100 and the scanner is Microtek ScanMaker 4900.
I have emailed both Epson and Microtek... phoned Epson.. and I still do not know the answer.
    The responses were
"At this point in time with have been given no information on whether our printer drivers will work or not....".
"Yes it will work with OSX 10.4"
"As you know this new intel chip has just hit the market. This particular configuration is in the alpha stage of testing. As of now there has not been any reports or customer correspondence of any concerns."
I have been scanning these posts and it seems that only the operating system is relevant? If anyone could help I would appreciate it. I am finally able to replace my old, old, well loved G4 but am worried I will make the wrong decision.

Thanks all for the helpful comments. I am getting closer to going out and buying the intel. As for the Canon printer... its not really an option for me, since the Epson cost me more than the computer will! But I will keep it in mind for the future. And do you think this applies to digital cameras as well Tomzo? I have been considering buying my first digital.. and thought the pentax might be best, since it apparently can use the lenses from my film camera.
Thanks again all..I will keep checking the apple site list and the web sites as suggested by you.

  • Printer and scanner sharing with Windows 7

    Hi there,
I have an iMac running the latest OS which my Canon printer is connected to.
When I work from home I have to use my work PC which is now running the RC version of Windows 7. Does anyone know if and how I can share my printer? The printer is currently connected to my iMac, but I could attach it to my Time Capsule if need be.
Would I need Bonjour for Windows? I used to use this when I was running Vista, but you had to run it as an XP application, and even then it was pretty unreliable.
I'd also like to be able to somehow share my scanner across both computers.
Both the scanner and the printer work under Windows 7 with a direct wired connection, so it's just a case of using them across a home network...
    Thanks

Go to "System Preferences/Security/Firewall" and change settings to: "Set access to specific services and applications". "File Sharing" and "Printer sharing" were already present for me, I don't know how to get them if they are not, and I don't know what the ramifications for security are. I can now see Windows computers and printers.

  • Canon MP460 printer, copier and scanner to iMAC but the scanner doesn't work.  How do I get it to work?

I have a Canon MP460 connected to my iMAC however I am unable to scan.  I can print perfectly and would like the scan capability to work.  How do I get the scan to work?

It is impossible to assist you without knowing what version of OS X is installed on your computer. However if you are using OS X Lion 10.7.x or Snow Leopard 10.6.x please look at Printer and scanner software for Snow Leopard & Lion to see if your device is supported for scanning. If it is then try using Apple's Image Capture software, you will find that in the Applications folder.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE complete your profile. It's easy to do, just click Your Stuff in the upper right of this page, then click Profile and fill in the pertinent information.

  • Finally upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6; what should I do about drivers for photo printer and Nikon slide scanner?

Finally upgrading to 10.6 from 10.5.8. What do I need to do about drivers for my epson photo printer and nikon slide scanner? May be going all the way to 10.8.

I suggest you determine if compatible drivers are available either in the OS X drivers package or directly from the manufacturer. The following has a link for application compatibility. You can check this, too:
OS X- Printer and scanner software available for download
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The price is $29.00 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
If you need to purchase Lion contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps - App compatibility and feature support for OS X & iOS.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.

  • HP Instructions for Printing and Scanning Under Snow Leopard

HP has posted instructions for Snow Leopard users for printing, faxing, and scanning on HP printers.
While the scan button (and installed HP printer management software) may no longer work on the printer, you can still scan if you go through the Preview or Image Capture programs on your Mac to access the scanner.
I tried it on my HP Officejet Pro 8500 wireless printer that was unable to scan after upgrading to Snow Leopard, and it worked.
HP has posted the printer instructions for Snow Leopard at: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01846935&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en &product=1153481
Hope this helps some of you. It worked for me.

You can download VueScan as a trial without paying for it unless you want to.
As for enabling scanning with Image Capture you need the proper driver. As a start I would ask HP's tech support if they can help you get it working. Apple does not write any printer or scanner drivers. They are provided by HP or other printer manufacturers. Apple packages them for distribution with OS X. It's quite possible that the current scanner driver for your model isn't compatible with SL.
If you understand modern technology then you have to appreciate the fact that most things become obsolete within months. This is certainly true of computers and their peripherals. Software developers cannot keep up the pace with the hardware. A two year old printer has been obsolete for more than a year already. Unless HP still sells and manufactures that model, they tend to lose interest with them. SL only arrived in October 2009 which is after your model was released. So HP needed to provide compatible drivers. If they have then perhaps the problem with yours is related to something else, but I don't know what that would be beyond completely uninstalling all the HP software then letting the OS figure out what to install. SL automatically discovered both my printer and scanner, then installed the drivers for each.

  • I have a HP 6310 Printer and I am having problems with it. It has started printing only portions. Of

    Hello
My HP 6210 is not printing properly. It appears to be a software problem not an ink cartridge problem. It will print parts of a document and skip other parts, leaving a document that looks as if some sections were left out purposely. The color of pictures is real screwed up. Overall, it prints in a light blue print.

Forget about HP software, it's in your best interest to totally uninstall it and use the tools available in OS X. The best place to get started is:
