Printer for college dorm

I need some advice on a good quality printer for a college dorm room
My daughter will be going off to college and is bringing her new MBP with her.
You know the dorms are not very big so the size of the printer is key.  Also she will mostly be printing documents.
Thanks for all your help
Have a nice day

Any will do. Check for Mac comparability first of course, like those from Dell might not work.
HP, Epson, Compaq etc., should work fine. Just make sure if it's  all-in-one to install the latest drivers from their website, not from the included disk as it's usually outdated.
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still

  • Printer for college student

I have a freshman in college who called me yesterday saying she's in need of a printer in her dorm. Going to the Union just doesn't cut it.
Any suggestions for a "college quality"-type printer?
(It's only been two weeks but the college keeps costing more and more!)

    Hi RCM..
When I bought my MacBook I got my printer free, tho usually I believe they run around $100.00. Its an HP Photosmart C4280 All In One. I was skeptical because even tho the price was right, I work my printer HARD. It prints, scans and copys. It is compact (good for small spaces) yet doesn't sacrafice on size or quality. Color and Black and White, of course. Paper tray is on the bottom and it slides in and out so as not to get in the way. Copier and Scanner are on top. It's great. Oh! And loading the ink cartridges is reeeal easy. And since school is just starting, maybe they have another deal going! Hope this helps.

  • Decent printer mac air for college

Have child going off to college wants printer for dorm room.  Most review of wireless printers are bad, anyone with good experience re small wireless printer danka

Frankly you would be better off advising them to simply use the printer(s) available on campus or going to Fedex/Kinko's or similar places.  The cost of ink replacements is ridiculous and it's highly unlikely they actually need a printer.

  • Best back up for college lap top

We currently have 3 mac computers all connected to external hard drives for the time machine use only. We just purchased a macbook pro for my daughter for college in the fall and are curious on the best back up source for that. The apple consultant sold us the "mobile me" software and told her she can back up most all her needed files on the mobile me account and that would be good. I, being older and having lost valuable info in the past, am not convinced that mobile me is the absolute best thing she can do. Would there be a reason to not connect a laptop to an external "time machine" type drive once a day and use the mobile me account for school files as well?
Additionally would there be a reason to use a smaller "mini" type drive that requires no additional power or would we want a standard A/C plugged in back up drive. Currently we are using all g-technology back up drives and have never had a problem with any of their operation or the time machine operation when we needed to fix a "human" error! I like the small mini type drives, but if it's used basically as a back up for the entire machine anyhow, would it be more beneficial or just simply smaller. I did note that there does not appear to be a kensington lock slot on most of the smaller drives and she is worried about locking things up in her soon to be dorm room.
All you help is very appreciated and please ask me anything if I rambled and didn't make sense!
    thanks!

Whether MobileMe is good backup for your daughter is all relative. Off-site backup is the best kind of backup you can have, so in that respect, MobileMe is good. However, there are some major drawbacks. First, it's slow. A large backup might need to run overnight. Second, space is very tight. You've only got 20 GB to share between all MobileMe features (mailboxes, backups, web site, iDisk storage, etc), and since it's shared, you won't want to fill all 20 GB up with backups. My user folder is 51+ GB. Third, you have to use the Backup app, downloaded from the MobileMe iDisk, to perform backups to MobileMe. Backup kinda stinks. There are far better backup apps out there... Backup is just not one I can recommend relying on.
Now, if your daughter's data fits fine and she can schedule large backups for times when it won't get in the way, MobileMe might be a good part of a backup strategy. Keep in mind that she needs to have a couple different backups at a minimum before ditching MobileMe outright.
Another option would be Time Machine with any drive you like. Since she's worried about things getting stolen, maybe make sure she's got a long USB or Firewire cable and can lock the drive up in a drawer or closet while it is still connected to her machine. Or look into a second online backup, like Carbonite.

  • Printer for my MacBook

I am currently using a MacBook, brand new in May, for my college education but I need to get a printer for it. I print out a lot of pictures so I'm thinking about an inkjet. However I have a catch, my kids/husband are still running on the ole' Dell (GAG!!) so this printer has got to be compatible with both. I'm looking at an HP inkjet all in one. My question then is will my MacBook work with the HP? Does anyone know?

Snow Leopard printer compatibility is listed here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669
Check the manufacturer in question for drivers compatible with your version of Windows. Yes there are HP compatible printers. But not all are.

  • Internet Solution for college students?

    Hello everyone,
I am a college student at Navarro and I am looking for an internet solution that caters to pretty specific needs. I will give some general ideas of what I think the ideal plan would be, and anyone who knows a plan that contains some of or all of those aspects please let me know!
:.>No contract - (most likely prepay). This is important because I would only be using it during resident times.
:.>Cost effective - Would like to see a plan from $15-30. The lower the better, I usually have about $200 left over after a semester.
:.>Tolerable speeds - I do not need 15mb speeds, but I average 28kb/s on the college wireless internet. This is not fast enough to have a reliable connection or to stream video for online classes. (720 students to 1 15 mb dsl connection).
:.>Router options - I would most likely want to purchase the router straight up if it is pre-pay / no contract, so if I change dorms etc. there is no hassle. Wireless might be nice, might not be.
I move a lot of data over a connection, so using a phone as a modem won't work. The buildings here are pretty dense, so satelite / wireless signals are weak and unstable at best. It is in a college dorm, so no new wires would be able to be run to the room; existing connections are phone and cable.
Thank you for reading my post! I am looking forward to ideas and suggestions to help improve my situation! It can be very frustrating taking 5 minutes to get into college email, or several hours for larger windows updates and whatnot!

    Hi Mcnpenfold,
Is Verizon in your area? If so private message me so that I can get more details.  I would like to see what plans are available in your area.  If you live on campus does the school allow students to get their own Internet services?  Thank you for your interest in Verizon services.

  • 11 or 13inch air for college?

I am going to college for engineering, most likely mechanical, at Duke. My question is should I get the 11inch macbook air (2.0Ghz i7, 8gb ram, and 256 SSD) or the 13inch macbook air with the same specs (I am leaning towards the 11 inch). The price difference is $50.  I will have a desktop monitor (20-25 inches) and an external hard drive that I can connect the laptop to while in my dorm. I will be using it for Logic pro and maybe some light gamming. But I think its primary use will be note taking in class and writing papers (I don’t really know because I haven’t started yet). There are computer labs with top of the line iMacs that I can use for any hardware intensive programs like CAD. I will have to be able to use some windows programs, I can get windows xp free or windows 7 ultimate for $15 through Duke, is bootcamp the best solution or is a virtual machine better? (Secondary question not as important)
    Recap:
    Desktop monitor in dorm
    External hard drive in dorm
    Light gamming
    Some logic Pro
    Portability is important
Durability is important too (not sure if they differ in durability)
    Some windows programs needed
Is screen size going to be a major issue?
Please excuse my grammar, I have no aspirations of becoming an English major.
I also apologize if this question has been asked elsewhere or if I am rambling.
By any chance can someone compare the strength and speed of this laptop to a 2008 iMac with a 3.06Ghz Intel core 2 duo and 4gb of 800Mhz DDR2 SDRAM? (If not it doesn't really matter)

Have you played on both? Which do you like better?
As others have said, the question really comes down to screen size (while away from that external monitor) and battery life. If you don't mind the smaller screen, and you can do with 5 hours (relatively speaking) compared to 7 hours battery (relatively spreaking) then don't be afraid to go with the 11". Not only is it incredibly light--which means less weighing you down as you haul that bookbag from class to class, not only is it incredibly small--which means it can fit on very small desktops in class rooms, and give you more room on a tabletop for your books and papers--but it that lightness/slimness also translates to being able to slip it in and out of bags faster; you save time packing and unpacking, and have more room in the bag for other things.
In the end, play on both and go with the one you fall in love with, as both can be configured similarly (do go for 8g RAM), and, thus, can be pretty much the same in performance. Which means what matters is which computer you are going to enjoy working on.
And do let us know which you pick. Either one is a great computer for college.

  • MBP GOOD FOR  COLLEGE?

Will be buying a laptop for college and wonder if MBP or a PC would do me better. I will be running typical applications; internet, word, and the like. I have always used pc but am curious about all the buzz for apple lately and I will definately spend the money if I know its a better investment.
I see some online concerns about performance. I definately had issues with performance with pc's. They would get slow as ****. Is this evident on mbp? Should I load up on ram and get the 2.16 processor?
I am looking for speed and reliability. I was also curious...am i reading correctly when people say they are running apple os and microsoft os at the same time?
Happy to pay the money if the switch to apple is truly worth it in the long run.
Any advice would be greatly appriciated...Thank you in advance.

There are two things I would consider, having used a ThinkPad in college and now owning a MBP for work and going to med school next month.
First, how do you plan to use the laptop? The MBP is rather large compared to the tiny pullout desks in lecture halls and rooms. It also runs rather hot and probably not a good idea to use on the lap. It's also a bit heavy for an ultra-portable. The MacBook is smaller, but still heavy. As an undergrad, I brought my ThinkPad to class every day but never did I take notes with it, rather I used it to keep myself entertained. So, if you don't plan on using a notebook in class, the MBP is a good desktop replacement for the dorm or apartment.
Second, what major are you, what apps will you need? Make sure apps you may need will run on a Mac if you get a Mac. I was a bio major and didn't need anything beyond Word and Powerpoint. Both run great under Windows, but the Mac versions are strange (and I almost hate them in comparison, while others love Mac Office). Until Microsoft releases the next version of Office that will run natively on a Mac, using Office on a Mac under Rosetta is rather slow.
You can use Parallels to run Windows within OSX or use BootCamp to run Windows on the MBP. The latter isn't very convenient. I use the former to run some molecular modeling and database software on occasion an it works well. I don't know that it would satisfy me if I had to use it regularly. In other words, don't count on either feature to make up for needing a Windows PC.
Anyway, if you're just going to be running Office and internet, I'd get a MacBook, and perhaps use the remaining $5-800 and get a 20, 23, or 24" widescreen LCD (cheaper from someone other than Apple) for the dorm or apartment, which would make a nice little setup.

  • Can I install windows 7 on a potable Hard Drive using boot camp? or any other way to do so?? need help for college please

I need to use windows in order to use Visual C++ for college but I don't have enough space in my internal Hard Drive so I want to install windows 7using boot camp or any other method on a portable hard drive and boot from it.
Please help I need it as soon as possible for school. Thanks

You can't boot Windows natively except on internal drives.
You can use a VM and put the VM image (VHD) anywhere any drive you want.
You are way too low on disk space, seriously so. And no room - even Windows and Mac OS should be warning and balking already.
"emulator" is an old-school term, even true, running a Guest OS under Mac's as a virtual machine, shared resources (RAM, processor) is easier but not the same performance level as running natively.

  • I need to buy a new MB for college! I'm thinking of getting a 13" MBA w/ the external DVD/CDROM drive and portable/external/whatever it's called memory. Where should I buy, Best Buy or Apple Store?

So basically a BB employee told me that instead of giving me the apple giftcard (one that would given to me for the back-to-school deal at apple) they would discount that off. Also, she says that their insurance policy (instead of apple care) would replace my macbook "then and there" if anything were to happen to it. Sounds too good to be true since I've had MANY MANY troubles with BB when I bought my first and only white MB 4 years ago. They were horrible. But she said the policy has changed since then and that people come in to exchange MBs daily. Can anyone help me! :3 Thank you <3
ALSO, (sorry for being a pain) is the MBA a good choice if I'm getting an external/portable hardrive as well as a DVD/CD-ROM drive? I need a MB for college stuff: writing papers, projects, presentations, other general college stuff. MBA doesn't have moving parts, which is a huge plus since I am not careful with my things, and will probably drop my MB a million times.

MacBook Air is a perfect choice for a college student. I have used a MBA as my only machine for several years now and am a professional in the advertising industry. I write a lot, do some (little) graphics work, code, and create presentations and videos. It's more than capable.
I have an external CDRW/DVDRW but I got mine from Amazon it's not Apple-branded. It works great but was a fraction of the cost. Also if you buy the Air from Amazon you can get free shipping and pay no sales tax, which may come out to less than getting the educational discount. However, if you qualify for both the $100 gift card and the educational discount you'll probably come out better getting it at Apple.

  • PO print for fax/email transmission

    Folks,
Have a generic query. How would you print the POs that were transmitted by FAX or EMAIL without adding a new message type?
The users in Prod. system have access to ME23N alone. If the message type was set as print, then no issues as they could go ahead and just reprint it.
However for the POs set as FAX/PRINT, the print icon does not appear.
What is the way out then?
Have tried with SP01, but could not get the PO print.
How is the spool no. found for a given PO. I checked in the processing logs for the messages, it said 'No processing log exists'.

  • Excise invoice Print for multiple invoices

    Hi All ,
i have developed a z smartform and attached to standard tcode J1IP o/p type J1I0 . The o/p is comming fine when i select one excise no after excecuting tcode J1IP But if selected multiple invoices by checking the checkbox and press print preview or print
button each time it is giving print preview/print diaog. i.e i need to execute print for first invoice and again i have to come back and again it will ask print prview/print dialog for second like wise n times for n no of selected documents .
my requirement is like when i execute tcode J1Ip and when i select multiple invoice i should get only one print preview or print dialog for all documents . how to achieve this

    HI friend,
    Its simple.
Put all the invoices in a single loop. I think you will be calling the smartform function module for each and every invoice. Don't do like that. Just collect all the invoices in the final table first and after that display the invoices.
I think you can understand what i am saying.
Please try and let me know if you have any queries i will help you.
    Thanks,
    Sri Hari

  • SSRS & Report Viewer control - Show the print button and fire print for multi page report in Mozilla & Chrome

I have reports in SSRS. I am using remote reports. Reports have multiple pages.
In IE, the print button displays, but in Firefox and Chrome, it does not display.
Below links shows how to display the print button for mozilla and chrome. These solutions only fire the print for the
current page in the report viewer-

I need to be able to issue a print command for all
pages in one go from the reportviewer.

    Hello,
The common workaround about print button on ReportViewer control for non-IE browsers is add ActiveX print control or create Print function. It has pros and cons.
I am not good at programming. But you can try to disable page breaks by setting InteractiveHeight to 0 so that the report will rendering in single page with Report Viewer control.

  • How do I get multiple lines to print for a blank text field so that it can be filled in by hand?

I have to design forms that are fillable electronically and by hand.  The problem that I am running in to is supplying multiple lines that will print for people that are hand filling the form.  I have tried to add an image of lines behind the text field, but these would get in the way when the form was filled in electronically.
    I am using LiveCycle Designer ES2 v. 9.0 on a Windows machine.
    Thanks.

    Ok.
    Take a textfield
Go to Object | Allow multiple lines
Go to Layout | Height | activate "Expand to fit"
    Go to the initialize-Event or readyform (You have to change the _ for your textfield)     this.rawValue = "___________\n___________\n___________";
    Go to the enter-Event   this.rawValue = null;
    Go to the exit-Event
              if(this.rawValue == null)
                    this.rawValue = "___________\n___________\n___________";
              }else{}
With this solution you can simulate the same as pattern see above.
I hope this is helpfull for you,
    Mandy

  • Condition records- setting printer for multiple vendors at the same time

    Hi all,
I have maintained condition record for POs for Key combination of Doc type,Purch Org and vendors. Now for a particular doc type and P.Org , I have around 50 vendors. I need to change the printer for all these 50 vendors to 'printerx'.Is it possible? I tried selecting multiple vendors at a time and changed the printer but its not working.

    Hi Saurav ,
You can achieve this through SCAT transaction.
For running SCAT take the help of ABAP team.
I hope u might be having the list in the form of text file.
If not , download the same from NACH table.
