Printer for my MacBook

I am currently using a MacBook, brand new in May, for my college education but I need to get a printer for it. I print out a lot of pictures so I'm thinking about an inkjet. However I have a catch, my kids/husband are still running on the ole' Dell (GAG!!) so this printer has got to be compatible with both. I'm looking at an HP inkjet all in one. My question then is will my MacBook work with the HP? Does anyone know?

Snow Leopard printer compatibility is listed here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669
Check the manufacturer in question for drivers compatible with your version of Windows. Yes there are HP compatible printers. But not all are.

    Hey!
I am "that guy" that got my hp deskjet 5850 working at home.
Question for you... Do you have the printer connected directly (USB) to your iMac or do you have it connected to a home network?
Choosing the type of Network Printing, wired or wireless
If you want to print wirelessly from any machine within range, you should connect the printer to a switch/router. This could either be by physical network cable, or wireless to the switch/router.
If you choose the network cable connection, installation goes a bit quicker.
If you want to set up everything wireless, you still need to use a USB or network cable to setup the printer, then you can unplug the network cable and it should connect to the network using DHCP like your MacBook.
Wireless Network Printing (Access Point, Router)
This hp photosmart has some instructions on how to get started:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01659524&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us &product=3418707&lang=en
Step 1. Print a test page to get the Network Settings for the printer
(see the above link for step 1) - kinda simple
Step 2. Get the info for you wireless network.
*First: SSID* you need to know what the Wireless Network is called (SSID)
*Second: Login for Router*, its good to know how to log into your router by typing in its IP address in a browser, typically the IP address is 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1 or something along those lines.
*Third: Security* Is your network encrypted WEP/WPA with a passcode/password? Are you filtering by Machine Access Code (MAC) address for each wireless machine?
No security at all? Its up to you
Step 3. Install the hp driver for Mac OS X, on you iMac... later you need it for your MacBook too.
    Download this driver:
HP Photosmart Full Feature Software and Drivers - Mac OS X v10.4 and v10.5
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software10/COL23697/mp-61314-1/HPInstaller_PSC4500v9.8.dmg
(again, take a look at the Installation link at the top for how to install the driver)
If you noticed with the install, when you try to CONNECT TO THE PRINTER, THROUGH THE NETWORK you will get an error first... then you have to use the USB cable with your iMac, and then finish the setup.
Now the printer is setup to work wirelessly, it should find the Router each time you turn it on, and connect after 1-2 minutes. (it needs to obtain an IP address first using DHCP, which should be the default)
You can try it with the iMac first to see if it works, then install the driver on your MacBook and connect to the Printer Through the Network... and this time it should find it without connecting a USB cable or anything else.
IF THIS DOESNT WORK, SELL IT ON EBAY AND BUY SOMETHING ELSE

  • How do I find a driver for a Dell 1320c Colour Laser Printer for a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.9.2

How do I find a printer driver for a Dell 1320c Color Laser Printer for use on a MacBook Pro running Mavericks OSX 10.9.2?

Ask Dell who made the printer and what model is it. Then you can see if there is a matching driver provided with OS X or that can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

Mac 101: Printing (OS X Lion)
    Important:
Your OS X Lion system will either have the necessary printing software already installed, or it will automatically download and install software when the printer is connected or configured. Do not install software that came with the printer as it may be out of date, and do not connect the printer to your Mac yet. Follow the instructions that came with the printer to unpack, install ink or toner, and insert paper.  Finally, use the instructions in this article to connect the printer to your Mac.
The procedures are identical for Mountain Lion.

  • How do i download kodak software for a 5200 printer for a macbook pro

I'm a new MacBook Pro user and have a Kodak 5200 wireless printer.  Where can I find the driver software and how do I download it? (Kodak don't seem to be a trusted supplier for Apple purposes).
    Thanks in anticipation of help.

You need drivers and firmware. To open them you simply command click and say yes or change this setting to allow downloads from anyone to open without pressing command.

  • New printer for OS9 macbook?

    Hi
My dad still uses OS9, and is not minded to move to OSX: "It's taken me long enough to learn this to start changing now.". Between you and me, I'm quite happy to let the status quo persist (anything for a quiet life)... and to be fair, he can do most of what he needs quite happily on OS9.
But we hit an issue yesterday that I could use advice on: his old Epson printer has given up the ghost. Is it possible to buy a cheap inkjet that will work in OS9? He's using a G3 iBook.

    Steven,
Check each of the big three manufacturers sites (Epson, HP and Canon) in your country to find a suitable model. There aren't really that many "current" models from each manufacturer. Obviously, if you just need a printer, you should avoid the multifunctionals, it's hard enough to get some of these working in OSX.
One caveat, I scanned their sites looking for a new printer / scanner, to replace the still perfectly functioning HP DeskJet 970 and Epson Perfection 1200, just to get a bit more speed and features. I thoroughly checked each devices specifications - and found a handful (sorry can't remember which) that support OS9.1 and above, one even supported OS8.6 - looking for Ethernet, multiple ink tanks, TWAIN support, OSX 10.3 support, etc, etc. I ended up with a Canon multfunctional, but I'm afraid to say all the new printers scanners I looked at when I got to the store are pretty cheap and nasty compared to my 10 year old kit. Just make sure your dad is prepared for this.
Just one other issue, that may not affect you, for the savings in desk space with a top-of-the-range multifunctional, you pay extremely heavily on quality of printing and scanning. A $500 multifunctional equates to about a $50 printer and a $50 scanner.
Someone told me this about a year ago, now I found out for myself.

  • What drivers do I need for a dell V515w AIO printer on my MacBook Pro OX S 10.7.2

What drivers do I need for a Dell V515w all in one printer for my MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.2 ????

Uh, tough call, you'll have to check what is used with a PC, drivers or driver+software.
If driver+software then that's a problem as they likely won't write one for OS X.
If drivers you can install these open source one and hopefully it might work,  Dell and Apple don't get along so you likely won't see Dell drivers installed by Apple in OS X like they do for others.

  • Need a printer for MacBook Pro - ideas?

I need a printer for my MacBook Pro. I want to be able to copy, print, scan and fax, and I want wireless capabilities. Considering an Epson Workforce 845 that had a good review on cnet. Any input would be appreciated.
    Cassandra

I just ordered the HP C410a from Amazon.
It was rated very high on the list of Consumer Reports tested printers.
The Epson Workforce 845 was not tested, But the Workforce 840 and 835 were 2/3's down the list of approx.54 all-in-ones. They only rated fair at most of the printers functions. They had a $1.00 more per month ink cost then the HP. The HP, I linked, was rated very good to excellent on all it's function tests and placed 4 from the top of the list.
Interesting to me, out of the 54 printers not many had a fax function!
How can you say you are an all-in-one when you only scan, copy and print? I know faxing is less used these days but I still need it on occasion.

  • Reliable, Affordable Printer for Macbook Pro w/ Retina??

I apologize ahead of time if this is being posted in the wrong place, but i'm looking for advice on getting a good printer for my Macbook Pro w/ Retina. I currently have an old Dell 1320c and although it setup fine and prints correctly the toner is now printing in gray and the lack of proper driver support makes troubleshooting the printer very difficult. In light of my recent printer troubles I decided to come here for some printer suggestions. As far as price range, I would like to spend no more than $150 for a new printer but if jumping up to $200 or something close greatly improves the quality, i'm open to more suggestions. This printer would only be used by myself at home and strictly for school assignments like word documents, powerpoints w/ pictures, etc. nothing too intense. I would not be printing actual photos and I don't think I need the speed of a laser printer to be honest. I would like a printer with GOOD support, meaning I can easily replace cartridges and not have to worry about replacing my printer for at least 2 years. Dell cartridges were pretty expensive and a lot of people had the same gray output problem that I experienced before the printer even reached 1000 prints. Regardless, this baby lasted me a good 4-5 years before giving me real trouble so I'm hoping a decent printer won't be hard to find.
My main concern is compatibility! I want a printer that is fully compatible with my macbook pro and allows me to utilize their menu services, easily access printer menus, check ink, etc. After that I just want something reliable and consistent with good product support. I will be using the printer every week during school to print notes and assignments, but not photographs and no need for a scanner. I'm not sure what other information to include but I hope I covered enough to give you guys an idea of what im looking for. Ive had trouble with DELL products in general so maybe just a different brand suggestion would be helpful but thanks ahead of time!
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I don't mind wireless vs. usb as long as theres not much price difference. Also it might be worth noting that the macbook I have has no CD drive so I would want a printer that I can set up without a CD drive, thanks!

I don't have a specific recommendation, but if at all possible you should choose an AirPrint-enabled printer from the (possibly incomplete) list in the linked support article. It will need no software or configuration, and will work with iOS devices.

  • How to choose an air printer for OS Mountain Lion 10.8.3

I am needing a printer for my macbook pro. Would like a multi-function laser printer that will print wirelessly. In reading the reviews on the Apple site, most of them are bad and talk about not working with the operating system. I will be using it for printing shipping and mailing labels, and general use printing. Does anyone have a printer that they would recommend? Your help is appreciated.

My old Brother printer has churned out 60,000 pages and is still going strong. And it has worked without problems on every OS version since 10.4. That model is no longer being sold, but i would recommend the Brother brand without reservation.

You will need to install an App like Print Central on the iPad to try to print to the printer. It will allow you to print to most printers. Check with their support folks if you need more info.
