Printer icon stays in dock even with auto quit enabled

The printer icon remains in the dock when printing is finished, even with the auto quit option checked.
I am using an HP deskjet 5650. This behavior has only recently started. How do I make the icon go away automatically? I've checked and unchecked the option and have restarted - nothing seems to make a difference.

This problem has been bugging me since last year when I got my MacBook with Leopard pre-installed. I kept waiting and waiting for Apple to fix this "bug" with various updates but they never did. Finally, a Discussions member named pcmike provided the answer in another thread (which has since been archived, and thus I'm not replying in that thread).
pcmike's solution worked for me and is a lot easier than resetting the printing system and re-adding printers as has been suggested in this and other threads.
The solution is to not have the printer queue set to show completed print jobs. If the printer queue is set to show completed jobs when print jobs are finished, then the queue can't "auto quit" because the user would not see the list of those jobs. In other words, the printer queue stays open because it's "waiting" to show the user the list of completed jobs. Thus, it can't quit.
In my printer queue, I went to the Jobs menu and selected Hide Completed Jobs. Once I did this, the queue quit and the printer icon disappeared from the Dock just as I expected.
This solution seems obvious to me now, but it never occurred to me why the printer icon would not go away. I realize now that this wasn't a bug after all. Thanks, pcmike!

  • How to stop printer icon staying in dock everytime i print

    hi all
basically i want to know to stop how to stop printer icon staying in dock everytime i print
whenever i print it stays there, and doesnt disspear everytime automatically

When you print your next document, right click or control click on the printer icon in the Dock. This will provide you with a menu of options. One of them is Auto Quit. Select it. Quit the printer queue and then print another document. The printer "app" will now quit after a successful print.
    Hope this helps.

  • Printer icon appearance on dock

I just converted from PC to iMac. Is there a way for me to have a printer icon show in my dock? Now when I want to scan a document I must open system preferences & click on scan. I'm looking for a shortcut.
    Thanks.

You don't need a printer icon on the Dock. To print the simple command from any app is Command P or if you want to use the mouse it's under the File menu just like a PC. However to scan, all Macs come with an app called Image Capture (look in the Applications folder) and you can simple drag that to the Dock and launch Image Capture that way. Another shortcut is to click Command Spacebar (this opens Spotlight) and type Image Capture or the name of any app or file you want to open.

I have a problem with iphoto (have a mac book pro): the icon in the dock appears with a question mark, and the application is gone!!! Can someone tell what's going on? Yesterday I had the same problem with itunes: I downloaded the last version (it's free), but I cannot do the same with iphoto, and more important: I need to know what is happening!!! Please help me!

Applications should not disappear all by themselves.
If they are then that coud indicate serious problems with your hard drive.
Backup everything up as quickly as possible.
Using Disk Utility verify your system disk.

  • I accidentally removed/deleted the Printer icon from my dock - how can I get it back?

I accidentally removed/deleted the Printer icon from my dock - how can I get it back?  I've tried dragging and dropping from the Print window - no luck.  I tried to drag from the Systems folder - no luck.   IOS 10.9.4

Well I have always had a printer icon in the Dock, launched or not launched (as in the screen shot below,) right next to the scan icon. Neither of which are launched at the present time.
What happens if you run a print job, control click the printer icon>Options>Keep in Dock

    Hi robfromkinglake west,
Try and isolate the issue.  Check if it's only with this drive.
Check the drive with Disk Utility

I've never seen a drive take 20 minutes to mount.

How to get slideshow to Pause and restart with auto play enabled? Happening in all slideshow do not restart once one photo is selected

I agree cwclark, I was going to ask the exact same thing, and yes, the only way to 'restart' the auto play is to reload the page which is frustrating to say the least. Every other site I've seen with this kind of 'auto-play' slide show still auto-plays even after clicking the 'next' or 'previous' buttons. Adobe, you need to get a fix for this ASAP

  • Why is there a question mark over a printer icon on my dock?

I have just installed a new printer on my computer.  I also have another printer installed along with this one.  I put this new printer's icon on my dock.  Now my old printer icon is showing a question mark over it.  I set my new printer to be the default printer.  Didn't know if that was the problem, so reset the default printer to be my old printer, but icon stayed.  Reset new printer to default and then turned on the old printer.  Question mark still there.  Set old printer to default and tuned on the old printer.  Set old printer to scan to see if setting it up to use it would do something.  Question mark still there.  I am stumped.  Anyone know why this is happening?  It just bugs me that it won't go away.

Noticed in the print summary that the printer icon had a pause symbol over it even though there was no print job listed that could be deleted.  Then got brilliant idea - took icon off of dock and dragged a new icon to dock - voila!! question mark gone!!  Crazy.  Anyway thanks for your thoughts as it led me to try this.

  • Why Won't Mail Icon Stay in Dock Where I Place It?

on Mac G5 Power PC 10.5.8. My Mail icon keeps moving to the right most position on my dock (dock is at bottom of screen) and will only stay in dock while the Mail application is open. When I close Mail, the icon completely disappears. I want my Mail icon to appear on the left side of the dock. When I drag mail icon to left, after a few seconds it automatically moves to the right end (next to the left side of the separator in the dock).
I would appreciate some help. Happened only after I updated to 10.5.8. Thank you. Dale (see my other dock-related issue with my Intel iMac - also after I updated to 10.5.8).

I did exactly as you described, locating the plist file and moving it from Library/Preferences to the desktop. I logged out, logged back in, and Mail started on the left side of my Dock and then promptly shot to the right. It is now to the left of a Google quick search box, an Applications Folder, a Documents folder, and a Downloads folder. I want the mail icon on the left side of my screen. How can I ensure that?

  • Printer Icon not in dock when printing - cannot access queue

Suddenly no printer icon is in the dock when printing.
In case of an error, I cannot access the problem.
    I cannot access the queue.
What's more: the printer just printed an image - but not the image that I commanded to print.
It was the image that I printed a week ago - he just printed it again.
I cannot find the printer utility in "scan and print".
How can I make the printer utility appear?

    Problem solved.
Suddenly the button "printer cue" was there - which was absent until now.
I dragged the print queue window to the dock, and to make sure it stays there I added it through "keep in dock" to the dock.

  • Printer icon not in dock when printing

Since upgrading to Moutain Lion my printer icon had disappeared from the dock during printing. Previously it would show in dock when I was printing, Now nothing. Still able to print without issue and can see queue by going into System preferences. Do not see a place to make it appea again? Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance

I should have mentioned that I already tried removing then adding the printer with no success. I see the printer under system preferences and it is printing normally. Just have no icon appearing in dock when in process of actually printing a page. So since I attach to it wirelessly, I am always concerned it is not printing when I want to. So it means I have to open up System preferences>Printer Queue to make sure it is printing. Would love to get the automatic icon in the dock back in place

  • How to get rid of printer icon on the dock ?

I have noticed that when I print a document, an icon for my printer appears on the dock. Unlike in the Tiger OS, this icon remains on the dock after printing is completed, taking up precious dock real estate. This occurs for both my Brother and Canon printers.
Is there a pref setting that I can make to have the printer utility close automatically after printing is completed so its icon doesn't remain on the dock? Thanks.

Control-click on the printer Dock icon and select Auto Quit.
    Regards.

  • How do I get my Cannon MG 5300 PRINTER ICON ONTO THE DOCK?

I accidently removed the ICON from the DOCK. Now I cannot find a way to get it back.
Also, I have Cannon Applications under Cannon Utilities, including the Solution Menu which the tech didn't think I needed to load. But I seem unable to set the paper to print photos, etc. So should I load the Solutions Manual so I have access to the applications?

system preferences - print and scan - you'll see your printer on the left side - click it and drag it to your dock.

  • Icons stay in dock / Dock out of sync

    Hi,
this one has been bugging me for many many months now (and as such is clearly not related to ML). Not sure if it was there with Snow Leopard as well but I already had it with Lion.
Things start going wrong on my MBP after several hours to days after a reboot. As far as I can tell it only happens after putting the MBP to sleep and waking it up but not always. The problem then is that the dock is out of sync. Newly opened programs are not being shown in the dock. Applications that are open and shown in the dock remain in the dock when closed. When I then click the corresponding icon in the dock the icon disappears. The only solution I have found to the problem so far is a reboot after which the problem is gone immediately (until it starts happening again several sleep/power on cycles later).
I am using Hyperdock and Totalfinder. Not sure if this is related. Has anyone here seen a similiar behaviour?
    Kind regards,
       JP

I checked their website and the only reference I found was it works with "10.6+", but maybe you're right.
Off topic, if you like TotalFinder you should try this, it's incredible:
    http://cocoatech.com/pathfinder/
Back to business though. If you just want to knock this out, I'd make a new account really quick, log into it, and see how the dock behaves with no additional software running. If it works, great, we know it's the third party stuff. If it doesn't, we look into something else. Just delete the account afterwards.
And make sure you don't enable the stuff on the other account.
Also, delete the sleep image. Might help, I've had weird bugs fixed with it. When your computer goes to sleep it saves the contents of RAM on the hard drive to restore from. You know how sometimes when you open it up you get the grey screen with the bars filling up as your computer comes back on? That's what it's loading from. It might not do anything but you did mention it happening after it comes back from sleep.
    1. Open a (normal) finder window.
    2. Hit Command+Shift+G to open a popup where you can enter a location.
    3. Paste in "/private/var/vm/" without the quotes, hit enter.
    4. It should load a folder with a file called "sleepimage" and a few "swapfile" files.
    5. Delete the sleepimage one, but nothing else. If you drag it to trash, make sure to empty the trash.
