Printer Ink cartridges differentiation

I have an HP Photosmart 7520 printer with the 5 ink cartridges; 564 photo and 564 black.   My "black ink" level is low, but my "light black ink" level is fine.  Which "black" cartridge needs to be replaced - the photo or the black? Thank you

Hi, There are 2 black cartridges and the narrow one is now called Photo ink cartridge, the wider one called Black ink cartridge. You can check ink levels to know which one, the empty cartridge will have a ! and you have to replace it. To check ink level please simply touch the dropplet symbolon the printer control panel. Regards.

  • Can I use Replacement Printer ink cartridges for HP officejet Pro 8610

I recently purchased an HP OfficeJet Pro 8610. I previously had an 8600. They both use the same ink cartridges. I had just installed some remanufactured 950 XL and 951 XL cartridges in the old printer and tried to use them in the new printer. Of course I got an error message that cartridges weren't HP but the printer would still work. I would like to know if I can use other remanufactured ink cartridges with the new printer or if there is some way for the printer to allow me to use other ink cartridges as the HP cartridges are way over priced for the consumers. I hope there is a person out there that is conservative like me and tries to find the best bargains on everything. Your solutions would be appreciated. I waited on HP Support Assistant for 10 minutes with a dialogue I would be connected to a technician in less than a minute. They must have been on break or some other excuse, so I thought I would try this instead. Blessings. John Richardson

    Hey @rockhoundjohn
Here's the thing, yes, you can refill your cartridges or use remanufactured cartridges, but you may run into problems.
QualityLogic, one of the world's foremost quality assurance organizations, tested the performance of HP inkjet print cartridges vs. remanufactured (refilled) brands. The results: original HP inkjet print cartridges far surpassed ink refills in both print quality and reliability.
Nearly one out of every six refilled ink cartridges tested was dead on arrival or failed prematurely
70% of refilled cartridges had some form of reliability problem
Count on HP original ink cartridges for consistent, worry-free printing. You may think you're saving money on remanufactured or refilled ink cartridges, but in the long run, the cost of wasted time, ink, and paper can more than make up the difference.  - Source
Most people think, 'well of course that is what HP or an HP representative would say', but I have done some research and found that many others have too. Here is a perfect example of somebody who does not work for HP in any way and basically is a customer advocate (in my opinion) ; Should you refill your printer’s ink cartridges? HP says no (of course) By Matthew Murray
I found the above article interesting and genuine.
My personal recommendation is to buy the HP XL cartridges as they are more cost efficient, and be mindful in the printer you choose when buying an inkjet. The 8610 was a good choice. The expected page yield of the HP 950XL High Yield Black Original Ink Cartridge is 2300 pages. The regular size cartridge page yield is 1000, still good but the XL is by far a better value. Some of the Photosmart printers or Deskjets are great for what they are intended for, but do not have as good of a cost per page.
HP's recommendation; Keep in mind that page yield is just one component of cost, and that factors such as quality, reliability, productivity, and efficiency affect cost as well. Products that work reliably will ultimately save you time and money. When you choose an inkjet printer, make sure you consider your individual printing needs.
    - Source
To summarize, again, yes you can refill the cartridges. The printer is not programmed to reject them. Sometimes the cartridges will not work and of course because they are non HP, HP would not be able to do anything to help. HP cartridges have a 2 year manufacture warranty; Limited Warranty for HP Ink Cartridges and Customer-Replaceable Printheads for HP Inkjet Supplies, this may give you comfort knowing HP stand behind their product.

  • Photosmart C4200 Printer - Ink Cartridges

    Hi all,
Perhaps a dumb question but I wanted to check.  I want to buy new ink cartridges for my Photosmart C4200. I have usually bought the standard 350/351 cartridges but was wondering if I can buy the 350XL & 351XL ones instead? Will they fit?
    Many thanks in advance!
    Darren

Thanks, but I tried both of those with no success.  Amazon.com has been helpful.

  • Used Printer Ink Cartridge Program

    Greetings;
I just purchased an HP Printer after having my Lexmark for quite a while. Lexmark has a Used Print Cartridge Return Program where they-after so many returns reward you with a free print cartridge, etc.
So, that is an incentive to send in the returns.
HP needs to come up with a program like that.
I saw the rewards for using the new cartridge and there is nothing that I would ever use. So, therefore is no incentive for me to return my used cartridges.

  • Hp oficejet printer ink cartridge 564xl comb pack

when i replace the 564xl comb pack can I just replace the black cartridge only?

    Hi @mpcannon,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I noticed that you are wondering if you can just replace the black cartridge only with your HP Officejet 4620. I am happy to answer this for you!
I would recommend to read through page 214 of your printer's user guide. Which I believe will have your answer.
I would also suggest reading this article, Ink Usage in Inkjet Printers.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 will not recognize changed ink cartridge

Replaced with just purchased new (out-of-the-box) Cyan XL ink cartridge as prompted but still received error message to replace cartridge.  Message will not change no matter that I tried:
    a. power printer off/on several times.
    b. removed/returned all  four ink cartridges
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

For everyone who has this problem with the 8500 rejecting known good ink cartridges.  I finally found a solution from a third party.
    (1)  Remove the ink cartridge that the printer is rejecting.  Look inside the printer ink cartridge well and see a small rectangular plastic button midway between the ink tube and the chip reader.  This plastic sensor is causing the printer to reject the cartridge.
    (2)  Look at the ink cartridge on the mating side of the plastic button and see a small rubber bulb in the end of the ink cartridge.  The pressure in this rubber bulb is supposed to push on the plastic button in the printer. But for various reasons it does not set the sensor to “off”.
    (3)  To correct the problem, place a small piece of stiff tape over the end of the ink cartridge to cover the rubber bulb.  DO NOT cover the ink tube or the sensor chip well.  The tape should be about three inches long and ¾ inch wide.  Use stiff tape like duct tape.  Not flexible table.  The objective is for the tape to increase the pressure the rubber bulb is supposed to impart on the plastic sensor button in the printer.
    (4)  Reinsert the ink cartridge in the printer. Problem solved 98% of the time.  If not, there is something wrong with the sensor switch inside the printer and this solution will not work.
    (5)  Good Luck.  Cheers!

  • Photosmart C6280 Ink Cartridges - CB284W vs C8775WN

I recently purchased ink cartridges for my Photosmart C6280 printer.  The new cartridges were CB284W but what came with my printer and what comes up when I search for ink for my printer is C8775WN.  Is there a difference?  When I asked the seller what the difference they said "those were starter cartridges", but didn't specify which ones they were talking about.  Please help!

  • New Ink Cartridge but can not print out/copy any document.

I have HP Printer Deskjet 1050. I've just bought 1 x Original HP Ink Cartridge Colour Black No.61 that can be used as well for my HP Deskjet 1050 (because I could't get No.802 Black Cartridge). I have pulled out the empty one and pushed the new one in until I heard snap sound (I've followed as what is in the instruction poster). Before my old Ink was empty, I was able to print either black or colour. Now, after I've got new one pushed in, I couldn't print nothing, even the alignment page doesn't automatically print out after all cartridges are pushed in and cartridge door was closed. My Black Ink warning light is blinking all the time. I can scan to my computer/laptop but can not print it out or make copy from the printer. This printer is not compatible for my laptop with OS Windows 8.1 (64-bit), but I was able to use my printer for printing thru my laptop by using HP AiO Printer Remote. Please help?

    Hi @KroebY,
Welcome to the HP support Forums! I see you have replaced the black cartridge on your HP Deskjet 1010, but it is not registering the new cartridge. You are unable to copy or print, you can make a scan. I notice you said your DJ 1010 was not compatible with the Windows 8.1 Operating system, there are full feature software and drivers available for your printer.

  • INSTALLED NEW INK CARTRIDGE and cancelled the alignment PRINT HEAD IS STUCK

    Greeting everyone
I just put a new color 57 HP ink cartridge  into my all in one 2210 printer & somehow I cancelled the alignment as it seemed not to be doing anything....and now it will not return the printer head and will do nothing.... how will I fix this?
this is just a printer problem as the printer was working fine before I changed the ink.  My Dell inspiron 580  wi PC is working fine and I have been printing direct from my computer to printer every day until my goof up...... intel core (TM) i5 CPU @3.20 GHz 64 bit  8.00 GB RAM

Hi - A couple of things to try:
    - Unplug the power from the back of the printer.
    - Open the top cover, and slide the carriage to the center.
    - Remove the cartridge and try reinstalling.  Make sure the ink cartridge snaps in and is firmly held by the carriage.
    - Plug the power cord back into the printer and power it on.
If that doesn't work, try repeating the steps above, but this time, remove the USB cable, which will completely isolate the printer and narrow down the issue.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can different contacts on the same brand of ink cartridge cause printer to print blank pages?

I have a  HP  office jet 6500 printer -  E709n model.   My operating system is Windows 7.  The printer requires one black cartridge and three different colored cartridges.  My black ran out (steaking, blank spots, etc.); the color cartridges were low, but not out.  I replaced the black cartridge with a new one.  When I did, the printer would not print at all - just blank sheets came out. After trying a few different things, I decided to put the old one back in.  I changed the document I was writing to green and it printed.  I thought this was odd so I decided to check the contacts.  The contacts or microchip on the old cartridge  looked completely different than on the new one.  So I decided to call hp tech service to see if they had changed the contact (microchip) design on their 920 ink cartridges and if that would make a difference.  An hour later after going through their usual steps - cleaning printouts and checking alignment which failed - they decided to send me another black ink cartridge.  Since I was talking to guys in India with heavy accents, it made it quite difficult.  They never answered my question about whether different contacts or microchips on the cartridges would make a difference.  It was chalked up as a faulty cartridge.   I returned it to Staples and purchased a new one.  I opened a new black cartridge, but its contacts looked just like the faulty one I threw away.  I decided to show it to a tech person there.  Two techs there had not seen anything like it.  They opened another black one which had the same style contacts so we concluded that hp had changed their contacts on their cartridges and maybe getting them all to match would work.  I picked up three color cartridges as well, but only checked one.  It had the new design.  When I arrived home, I quickly opened all cartridges and inserted them into the printer.  It still didn't print. So I checked all cartridges.  All had the same style connection or microchip except the yellow ink cartridge.  I couldn't believe it.  So do I take the yellow one back and try to open a package to find a matching connection or do the connection even matter.  The display is registering all cartridges as full, but I am still unable to print anything but blank paper.  I printed an alignment page and only color gets printed, no blank.  So please let me know if the difference in connectors makes any difference in whether things print.

There have been some changes in the contacts on the supplies, but this should not cause any issues in printing.
I would suggest you try the troubleshooting steps in this document.  If that does not resolve the issue then the post here may help.

  • How can I print using only the black ink cartridge?

I have a officejet 4620 that I need to know how to set up to have the option of using the black ink cartridge only. I rarely ever use color ink and I dont want $30 worth of color ink to dwindle away while printing pages that do not need any sort of quality printing. How can I change this setting? I have a Mac and there are hardly any options when trying to print anything.
    Thanks!

  • I can not print black and white only documents and I have a full black ink cartridge

I have been an loyal HP customer since the orginal laserjet in the early 90s and then many inkjets from HP after that.
I bought an HP 6600 All in one for the house and have only ever printed in black and white.
For some reason one of the color ink carts is empty after a few months of black and white only printing.   No problem - I only print in black and white - or so I thought.
Nothing I have been able to do (aside from buying a color cart I don't need) is able to tell the printer to not worry about color and only use the black and white cart.  Past inkjets from HP didn't have a problem with this.
Please tell me HP didn't do this on purpose and is going to trying and justify the need for me to buy any color carts if I never print in color.  HP - if you did and you are going to try and tell me you neeeded to do this for any reason then someone please sign me up for the class action lawsuit if you are an attorney looking for plaintiffs.
However, I am sure I am overlooking some simple setting on the 6600 to move past this annoyance.
    Thanks!

    Hi Atlanta90210,
We appreciate your brand loyalty, and I'm very sorry for the frustration this has caused.
There is a lot of good information in Cannot Print When One of the HP Ink Cartridges is Empty. It explains how your printer works and how it is designed. Another good resource is posted here.
In the first link I mentioned, there are steps to print with black ink only. I have a similar printer to this at home (with the same print mech), and I have found that the steps to print with black ink only have saved me lots of ink.
There needs to be ink in all the cartridges for this printer to continue printing (after the cartridge's reserve mode is depleted). Once you have replaced the empty cartridges, you can change the print settings to print with only black ink so the printer doesn't use color ink. Until then, there is not a way to bypass this.
I know this is not the answer you were hoping to receive, but I do hope it was helpful.
I'd be happy to help you with any other questions or concerns.

  • New HP ink cartridges - still not printing black

New HP inks - but still not printing black. Have re-inserted; cleaned printhead; store replaced ink cartridge incase faulty; ink levels all full. No black printing; just good old faint grey. I am so frustrated with this printer and dont really want to have to schlepp it to the repairs place when it was working perfectly before I replaced the ink. Have had to pay the shop for 2 black inks as clearly the first wasnt faulty - it's the printer. Have even tied the APP suggestion but still grey where it should be black! Reluctant to take out printhead and wash it under tap. Should i try that?!!

    Hi @rhare
No, personally I suggest calling us instead. Some printers have printheads that are intended to be removed and cleaned if necessary, your printers printhead is fixed and is not intended to be removed.
