Printer is randomly printing half of a characters on entire line

I have an HP OfficeJet Pro L7580.  The printer will sometimes print an entire line where only the bottom half of the character is printed.  This could happen on 3 lines of a full page document.  If I print 2 different pages and compare where on the document this occurs, it does happen at different places, but the entire line is affected.  This only happens in BLACK.  The other colors (including yellow) print fine.  I tried replacing the cartridge with a brand new HP 88 and it is still happening.  I tried cleaning the print heads many times and it still is happening.  When I use the alignment tool, I sometimes get a displayed message, "alignment failed," but sometime I do succeed with the alignment.  Can you please help me.  I don't use this printer much, but when I do, I need it to work.
thank you!

This sounds like a print quality problem.  Print quality on this series is controlled by the "printheads" (cartridge like things located in the printer carriage) so replacing the black ink will not be sufficient.  Even if your printer is out of warranty the printheads are warrantied seperately so please call HP first, you may be lucky and find you are in warranty.  The main troubleshooting steps you could try are:
- With printer turned on open the main top lid (so you can see inside the printer)
- hold down the "OK" button until the printer carriage moves all the way to the left hand side
- unplug power from back of printer to avoid shock (do not use power button because we want carriage to stay still)
- open the blue cover and remove the black and yellow printhead "K/Y" (careful may be dripping ink)
- clean electrical contacts in carriage and on printhead with damp lint free cloth and then dry off really well (use bottled water if possible + DO NOT clean bottom of printheads where ink comes out just the round copper/gold looking circular electrical contacts)
- check date of printhead, this will be a pain to read but it is probably stamped in the outside black casing starting with the year first  (if in warranty HP may replace for you at no charge if issues persist after troubleshooting with them)
- re-insert printhead, close blue cover to carriage (don't be afraid to push down as you wanna make sure things are in place here)
- plug power in and press OK if the printer scolds you for an inpropper shutdown
- otherwise you can run "Calibrate Line Feed" and "Clean Printheads" from front panel by going to "SETUP" then arrow over to "TOOLS"
Again, not gonna hurt to call HP even if printer is OOW since printheads have their own warranties individual from the printer.

  • Illustrator CS3 printing to random printer under 10.5.4

    Hello,
    I recently upgraded to 10.5.4 and now, when I print from Adobe Illustrator CS3 (latest update), it prints to a random printer on my network. This doesn't happen EVERY time, but about every OTHER time. I select my printer (a B&W Xerox) and it prints fine. I then re-print to the same printer, but it goes to another printer on the network (a colour Xerox). This has been happening all day and I've made SURE I'm on the right printer.
    I don't know if it's happening from other applications (as I'm only working in Illustrator and doing MANY prints from it right now)?
    Has anyone else experience this?
    I assume this is just another of the many bugs in CS3 apps as a result of 10.5.x ZERO QC this time around, IMHO.
    Regards,
    Kristin.

    The dock!?? Strange, but makes sense. I'll give that a try -- thank you!
    As for random printers... I was running the latest PPC 10.4.x about a month and a half ago with CS3 (13.x) and had occasional problems. (The software here is kept up to date in a timely way.) But since then, we've upgraded to Intel Macs now with 10.5.7, currently running CS 13.0.2, and we see the problem more & more often. I can't be sure if it's happening more because of updated software, or if more is being printed -- I probably go into the Print menu about 100 times a day so it's not easy to keep a mental tally, plus I never thought to jot it down. That and it's difficult to track all the variables... is the dock on... was the file originally created in CS2 or AI8... etc.
    Anyway, thanks for your help & dock suggestion! If you or any others have any more ideas, I'll be stalking this forum thread, hoping Adobe (or Apple?) whips out some kind of patch or something!
    (Since CS4 is out, would Adobe even bother with updates anymore? We can't upgrade to CS4 until dozens of our counterparts upgrade too, and their equipment isn't CS4-friendly!)

  • Cannot open properties and printer randomly prints mirror for what appears to be no reason

    First I couldn't get a pdf to print.... So I check with Adobe and they say get latest drivers.
    So... I go to HP and get this big file to reinstall the whole printer.
    I uninstall and reinstall.  The fax part won't install but I don't use it so who cares.  (It never did work right)
    Now it prints the pdf BUT  it randomly prints them mirror image - white letters on black background.
    I can't access the properties to check it because when I click on the properties button it doesn't open.
    If I print the page a second time it will print correctly.
    I'm running Windows 7 and this is a problem that started about 2 days ago.  I've been really busy and wasted hours on this already.  If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.
    I found someone else who couldn't open properties but there was no solution.
    I've already uninstalled and reinstalled so ....

    Hey @pb-29,
    Thanks for getting back to me regarding this issue.
    At this time I recommend continuing the support that you have already started with my colleague @Gemini02  under the following thread: Mirror printing - docs no good - wasting toner- printer becoming worthless.

  • Random print jobs showing up in print queue when printing...

    Whenever I print something, one or two other random files will show up in the print queue.  The printer will not try and print these additional jobs, and it does not prevent another print job from printing, but each time more random files will show up.  The print queue will fill up with these additional jobs until they are manually deleted.  What a pain.  Does anyone have a solution???

    These random files can be communication files and are used to interogate the printer about its status. Typically they will be processed by the printer and then vanish from the print queue. So if they are not being processed and you are having to manually remove them then there could be a setting in the printer that needs to be changed or you have to check from an updated driver.
    To confirm if it is the printer queue / driver that is checking the status, you can open System Information (Applications > Utilities) and select Printers in the left column. You can then select the printer in the top right pane and see its information in the bottom right pane (or if this is the only printer you have the information will appear in the right pane). You will see an entry called Printer Commands. If it shows something like Report Levels then this confirms that these files you are seeing are for checking the printer status.

  • Printing the First 14 Characters of Every Line in a Text File

    My text file looks like the following:

    1111097116274, H00F0458F8110C006, 3, 16:48:12I want my java program to print the first 14 characters of every line. Here's what I have:
    import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
    import java.io.*;
    public class Read {
         public static void main( String args[] ) {
        try {
            BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("aFile.txt"));
            String line;;
            /*String tagid;*/
            while ((line = in.readLine()) != null) {
                 char[] tagid = line.toCharArray();
                 line.getChars(0, 14, tagid, 0);
                 System.out.println(tagid);
            in.close();
        } catch (IOException e) {
             JOptionPane.showMessageDialog( null, "Error" );
             System.exit(0);
         Instead of printing the first 14 characters of every line to output, it prints the whole text file.
    Any ideas of what's wrong?
    Thanks.

    Well, that's the thing with a highly tuned, precision engine like your mind, JosAH. Adding a little alchohol to the fuel mix provides a performance boost, but as the alcohol/fuel ration increases, the performance improvement peaks and then degrades, until the performance is actually reduced. Now, I understand that in the case of the magic Grolsch, this performance curve is shifted farther to the right (graphed with Grolsch count as the independent variable, and performance improvement as the dependent variable), but it still occurs.
    I recommend nitrous oxide. You may need to get your piston heads hardened, though.

  • HO D110 series printer will only print half of page get error

    Ever since I got a new lap top that has Windows 8 my printer will only print half of the page and then stops. I get an error message. I have used the online Wizard and downloaded the new driver but it still won't work. Also can't print wirelessly still from other devices.

    Hello mrshayes,
    I saw that you have a new laptop with Windows 8 and now the printer is printing half a page and will not print any more. I understand you also cannot print from other devices. I have some suggestions for you.
    First, try to make a standalone copy from the printer itself. If the copy is successful, the printer tests out okay. If the copy fails, try resetting your printer and ensuring it is plugged in directly to the wall outlet, avoiding power bars, surge protectors, etc.
    Here is a link on how to reset the printer: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c03177455
    If the copy works fine, see if there is a Firmware Update needed: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c02919168
    Also, run the Print and Scan Dr. to detect any issues. This tool might fix the problem.

  • I I made a PDF fie to preview, but am still apprehensive to actually order the book, as I have ordered some prints of photos after I thought i had them cropped correctly and prints returned with heads, half of bodies have a book formatted and ready to buy

    I have formatted a photo book, but am apprehensive to push the "buy" button as I have ordered prints that I thought were cropped correctly, and they returned with heads cut off and half of bodies mising.  I have put the book on a PDF file as instucted, please reassure me that if everything looks right there, that is the way the book will look??

    If the PDF looks good then the printed copy should be OK.  The only problem you might run into is the color rendering.  As long as none of your photos use the sRGB profile and not the Adobe RGB color profile the color should be fine.
    On those prints that were cropped incorrectly: did you copy them to the print size ordered before uploading for printing? If not then they will be cropped by the printing equipment and you'll lose part of the top and bottom of the print (for landscape prints).

  • Printing specific characters of a line of text

    Does anyone know of a good way to extract certain characters from a line of text. Such as printing the first two characters or characters 3 and 4 or characters 7-13 etc. It seems like sed should be able to do this, but I can't find any examples online.
    Thanks!

    This command will extract the last 3 characters from every line:
    sed 's|^.*\(...\)$|\1|'
    Middle characters are a little harder. This command extracts the 23rd, 24th, and 25th characters from every line:
    sed 's|^.\{22\}\(...\).*|\1|'
    But if you are doing columnwise operations, a better tool is awk and not sed.

  • Random printing question

    Hello! I have been a mac user for years and have never run into this problem. I got this mac book pro less than a year ago and have not been able to print correctly and was hoping someone would be able to help. Rather than receiving the full printing menu (that allows you to pick how many copies you'd like to make, double sided, etc. depending on the printer) I get a simplified print menu when I click print that only has options choose the printer, choose the presets, and then buttons .pdf, preview, cancel, and print. It has been like this for months and it is becoming an incredible hassle. I was hoping that someone knew what what is wrong. It does this regardless of the program I am printing from and regardless to what printer I am printing to.
    Thank you,
    Leanne

    Hi Leanne,
    When you get the print dialog box, there is a small down arrow to the right of the printer name. Click it and all the options should re-appear (and the arrow should now point up). Some of the more advanced options are now found by clicking on another box in the center that will appear. Depending on the printer you are using, it may have options such as the current program, paper handling, color, etc.
    Good luck.

  • WRT610N causing Wireless printer to randomly become active...

    Hello,
    I recently purchased a WRT610N wireless router, and since then, my printer has been going active for no particular reason...
    My printer is a Epson PX800FW. I have searched and searched online, but i cannot find a solution to this problem. It only happens like every few minutes or so, and my printer would just go "printing..." for a few seconds, then stop...
    My thoughts are, could it be the router somehow checking my connection to that printer or something?
    Any help would be appreciated, this is driving me nuts,
    Thank you in advance
    Edit: a little extra info, I can still print from the printer just fine, and i am running Network magic on my PC's and laptops (if that makes a difference...)

    The printer is fully wireless, so its actually not doing it on any computers at all i guess.
    I tried your solution and it appears the problem still exists (it actually flashed seconds after i changed the settings, heh). I'm assuming its not on my printers side, because it didnt happen until i purchased and set up this router. Prior to that I used my DSL modem/router and I didnt cause any problems with my printer.
    But just to check, i went through and reconfigured my printer (theres not all that many settings :/ ) and it still did it. Though there is a few manual settings. DHCP, DNS, and Proxy settings, I don't know if that helps at all? I always just had it on Auto with those settings.
    Thanks.
