Printer not working since installing Mac OS X v 10.7 Lion

Since updating, Epson XP-400 printer unable to print. Message says the printer is offline and the printer is not connected yet printed a test page but unable to print a Pages document. I reinstalled the printer software and checked for updated software.
I upgraded solely to avail of an app that was recommended and a novice at doing any more, so help much appreciated.

Hi Visionlike,
I recommend the troubleshooting steps in this article if you are not able to print after updating OS X:
Troubleshooting printer issues in OS X
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3147
Follow these steps until the issue is addressed:
Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel.
Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again.  Download and installyour printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
Contact the printer vendor or visit their website for further assistance.
Best,
Jeremy

• Printer not working since OS X 10.9.4

Ever since installing the latest Mac softwear (10.9.4) on my iMac I can no longer print.  I receive a message saying:
"Unsupported Operating System.  The Intsaller is not compatible with the version of the operating system on your computer.  It is compatible with only 10.6 and below.  For more information visit www.hp.com"

• Print spooler not working since installing LinkSys WRT 160N

Since installing my WRT160N my printers have stopped working. All printer drivers have been removed including acrobat and my fax.
Even if I try reinstalling my drivers, I get the following error:
Spooler SubSystem App has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Prior to this error my firewall was giving me constant warnings about  Pure Networks Admin assistant application trying to access the same files(i.e. nmctxth.exe). Even though I allowed it still kept popping up.
I am using the online armor firewall on a Windows XP system.
I cannot access the LinkSys Advisor anymore as it will not start.
Thanks

I had the exact same thing happen to me.  Installed a WRT 160N on May 10 and have not been able to print since.  Wasn't sure it was the router until I dug into the event log.  This message appears as a warning during the time I was installing:
Printer Driver Microsoft XPS Document Writer for Windows NT x86 Version-3 was added or updated. Files:- mxdwdrv.dll, unidrvui.dll, mxdwdui.gpd, unidrv.hlp, mxdwdui.dll, mxdwdui.ini, stddtype.gdl, stdnames.gpd, stdschem.gdl, stdschmx.gdl, unidrv.dll, unires.dll, XpsSvcs.dll.
Apparently we tried to print something a couple of days later and this error appears:
DCOM got error "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. " attempting to start the service lxcf_device with arguments "" in order to run the server:

Any help out there?  Windows says I have a spooler dll file missing and also keep getting an error message about "RPC server not available."   What should I do?
thanks!

• Software update, safari 3.0.2 do not work after installing mac os 10.4.11

Hi,
I've been upgrading a B&W G3 from 10.3.9 to 10.4.x and after installing from a 10.4 retail disc I used the software updater to download and install 10.4.11.  This worked fine, no errors.  But, both Software Update and Safari will not load at all, they are not even showing in the Force Quit dialog.  So I returned my system to 10.3.9 re-installed 10.4 and took an image of my installation.  I then proceeded to install a combo update, repair permissions (a task I had been performing previously), test software update and safari (which both worked), take an image of the installation for combos 10.4.3, 10.4.5, 10.4.8 and 10.4.10.  Everything worked fine.  Then I installed the stand alone 10.4.11 and was presented with faulty Software Update and Safari!!!
I've concluded there is definitely something wrong with 10.4.11 update where it be a stand alone or part of the combo update.
Is there a get around, to install the update and then amended some files, settings or something?
Thanks

Tiger 10.4.11 uses Safari 4.1.3.
Safari 4.1.3 for Tiger can be downloaded here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1069
General advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL170
And for Intel Macs here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL172
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.4.11 update here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• Illustrator CS4 not working since installing Yosemite

Since installing Yosemite on my Macbook Pro, my CS4 Adobe Illustrator no longer works. The related files in the applications folder also show as being unavailable. All of the other programmes in the CS4 design suite still run without a problem. Can you please let me know how I can fix this issue. Thanks.

sorry I've not seen this question sooner - I'm here looking of answers to a recent problem with Photoshop CS4 repeatedly crashing in Yosemite - been working fine for months until this week - roll on Serif Affinity Photo!...
However. I'm no illustrator expert but I have Ai CS4 on three Macs, all running Yosemite and Ai apparently working just fine as far as I can see (I'm not a frequent user of Ai so rarely touch the surface of features but it launches, opens Ai files supplied by clients and saves my edit just fine.

• Canon ip4300 printer not working since restore of back up to replacement hard drive

I have submitted a question to Canon, but thought I'd see if anyone has had this issue here.
I had to replace my hard drive due to a failure.
Then I restored my iMac from a TimeMachine backup. That worked fine.
Now though the Canon ip4300 printer I was using successfully before the new hard drive and restore is no longer working. The print status window says i need to install software to use this printer.
However, it definitely worked before the restore.
Canon does not appear to have any drivers for OSX 10.10. However, I was hoping to get this older printer to work again since it was working on Monday just fine before the drive failure.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

What system were you running before the drive failed?
First try the fix discussing in this Apple document: OS X Yosemite: Reset the printing system
Next, if you have Time Machine backups try the following;
1 - go to the HD/Library/Printers folder and select the Canon folder.
2 - enter Time Machine and go back to just before the drive crashed.
3 - select the Canon folder and restore it.
4 - run Disk Utility to repair disk permissions.
5 - try the printer.
This is what I had to do when I upgraded my system for my older Canon i850 printer.

• Tecra M7 DVD: CD/DVD RAM drive does not work since installing Vista

I did a clean installation on my Vista Ready new M7. It had XP tablet to begin with and the DVD drive worked fine. Indeed I used it to install Vista (Home Premium).
Now it does not work at all. It spins but does not read. Device Manager tells me device cannot start. Tried to update driver and it told me that it has the most uptodate driver.
Downloaded all the drivers from Tosh download centre for Vista upgrade of M7 (which got bluetooth, screen rotation etc to work fine). But none of the downloads seemed to be a driver for the DVD-Ram drive. Can not find a driver anywhere else (including Panasonic site).
DVD drive is Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-841s
Any suggestions?

Hi
On the Toshiba driver page you can find the DLA for Tecra m7.
Did you try to install the XP DVD-RAM driver from the Toshiba page on the Vista OS?
Maybe it will works
But listen the CD/DVD drive uses the common Microsoft drivers which are included into Vista or XP.
Therefore an additional driver should be not needed!
One additional proposal;
Remove the CD/DVD drive from the device manager and reboot the notebook.
After new reboot the OS should install the drive again and should renew the software.
Other hint:
- Start the registry
- Choose the registry key;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
- In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters and LowerFilters then click Delete.
- and restart the notebook

HI Gregg,
Thanks for posting your issue on forum,
Could you let us know how is the printer connected to the Mac. Also would like to know if you are using Scan to computer or Scan to network folder.
did you try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer after upgrade.
When you upgraded you Mac to Yosemite did you use the Migration Assistance to move all the applications, files to the newer OS.
check if you have the HP Scan application installed if yes let us know the version of it.
Try the below steps:
Go to Finder>>Applications>>Hewlett Packard folder and run the HP Uninstaller.
go to System Preferences>>Printers and Scanners>> right click on the printer icon or the white space on the left side of the windows and click on Reset Printing System( Note: This will delete all the printers listed under printers and scanners)
Restart your Mac,
go to Apple Menu>>System Preferences>>Sharing and make sure computer name is present.
Download the latest driver from web, make sure you select the correct product and install the same.
When adding the printer make sure you select HP Printer driver instead of AirPrint.
Perform Apple Software Update and make sure its uptodate.
also you can install the HP Printer Driver Version3.0
Now see if you can find HP Utility and then enable Scan to Computer.
Let us know if this helps.
Thanks.

• Canon LBP3100B Not working since installing a wireless modem

My Mac will not print to my printer even though the printer appears in the printer list and the print queue shows a job "printing". The printer utility thinks no printer has been installed. The printer doesn't make any noise and nothing happens. I have tried resetting the printers (deleting all printers). I have reinstalled the software and printer several times, but still no joy. Canon have supplied me with a pixma ip4700 in the meantime, and that works fine. They have tried to duplicate my problem (on a Mac using my OS) without success. Can anyone help?
Thanks

Mandl7 wrote:
I have noticed that although the first time I added the printer there was an icon at the top of the Add Printer window saying "More Printers" this doesn't appear any more.
With the CAPT driver installed, the More Printers button takes some time to appear in the bottom left corner of the Default Add Printer view.
If this More Printers button does not appear after several seconds then something may have gone wrong with the CAPT driver re-installation (assuming you did install the CAPT v3.10 driver after deleting the CAPT folder). In this case I would run the CAPT installer again.
Also I can't add via the More Printers button as when I do that the printer does not appear in the list of printers after I click on the driver that way.
Sorry, but I thought you said that the More Printers button is not appearing? If it is appearing and after you select it and then Canon USB (CUPS CAPT) from the top menu, the LBP3100 should be visible in this view if it is connected via USB to the Mac.
I can add the printer through the Print Using field by choosing Other and finding the PPD on the HD (Library - Printers - Canon - PPD's).However, although the printer then appears in the list, sending a print job doesn't wake up the printer, it just adds to the print queue.
This would be an expected result as you cannot add the CAPT printer using this method.
Also when I look up the Printer Utility under Printer Setup in the Print Queue. It says there are no registered printers and status monitor will be terminated.
Again, if the printer was added by selecting the PPD via the Other menu then the CAPT print monitor will not function correctly. So I suggest you delete this newly created printer queue and select to add the printer again by selecting More Printers when it appears. I just tested how long it takes and it was about 5 seconds before I saw More Printers. Then when I did select it I could see Canon USB (CUPS CAPT) and Canon IP (CUPS CAPT) in the top drop menu.
If you can select Canon USB (CUPS CAPT) at this point but then you don't see the LBP3100B in the bottom window then it may be worth you trying another USB cable.
