Printer Permissions

Hello,
We have a Windows 2012 domain and we are currently deploying printers via Group Policy. We have one printer and have set up a mono and colour driver for the printer. The idea is that everyone can print to the mono printer and selected users can print to
the colour printer. Both printers are deployed via the same User GPO. All standard stuff so far.
To stop unauthorised users printing to the colour printer, under the security settings the everyone group has been removed and replaced with the 'Colour Users' group with allow print selected.
The issue we are seeing is that the colour printer will not deploy to any users, even those in the Colour Users group. Event viewer states that permission is denied when applying the group policy. I have added the 'Domain Computers' to the colour printers
ACL with Allow Print permissions and the printer will now deploy, but everyone is able to print to it.
Is anyone able to offer any advice on how to deploy a printer via group policy but is restricted to only certain users. Ideally we do not want to create a separate GPO object for just the Colour Printer and restrict that to Colour Users. We just aim to deploy
all printers via one GPO and limit who can print via the printer security settings.
Thanks,
Mark

I believe that "Everyone" still needs to be on the queue in order for clients to connect. However you just remove the "print" option for it and instead add the OU with the colour users.
In my world I think this is double administration. Instead I believe that users should be informed that a) it can cost ~10 times more to print in colour compared to B&W and b) we do log everything being printed to the server so if people do print in
colour they might have to justify the usage when (not if but when!) log files are being checked.
And if you do plan to log this I suggest you look at the free PaperCut print logger. Excellent tool that logs job events into a csv file for easy Excel gymnastics later...

  • TS3147 printer permissions will not repair?

    Epson printer will not set up or not show up in printer list. And if I try to repair my permissions they will not repair it just runs out a long list of repairs that
    never quite gets repaired right.

    These days it's quite normal to get a long list of 'errors' on doing a permissions repair because Disk Utility has not been upgraded to allow for some changes made to the system.
    As long as at the bottom of the list it says 'Permissions repair complete' you can safely ignore them all.

  • PowerShell add Printer Permissions where the printer name starts with...

    I have a printer server that has printers for multiple buildings. All the buildings have abbreviations like "BLD" for example, so my printers start with the same building abbreviations
    like “BLD-Printer1”. Is there a quick an easy way to set permissions on printers where the name starts with something like BLD?
    I'm a total noob with PS .<o:p></o:p>

    Just wanted to point out that in addition to using .NET/WMI to enumerate the printers, Windows 8 has a native PowerShell implementation you could use. It supports remote management, so you can even use it from a Windows 8 client to target your Windows Server
    2008 R2 instance.
    $printers = Get-Printer -ComputerName $printServerName -Name bld*
    foreach ($printer in $printers) {
    Set-Printer -ComputerName $printServerName -Name $printer.Name -PermissionSDDL #fill in your permissions here
    Full description of these cmdlets: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh918357.aspx
    Excellent - Just fill in the SDDL.
    Does this work on WS2008R2 PrintManager Queues?  I find no -SDDL except on WS2012.  WS8 is missing this parameter. Is it only available on WS8 Enterprise?
    WS2008R2 also does not seem to support this.
    Get-Printer and its cousins are wrappers around The Q functions posted above.  The API has no security bits before WS2012.  Look at the MSDN and Technet articles for this CmdLet and the other "Printer" CmdLets.

  • Set The Secured Files, Not allow printing and saving to another location

    Dear Sir / Madam,
    Please help...
    Possible to set the security permission for share files, not allow end users to printing and saving a PDF to another location.
    Thanks,
    Alex Tai

    Hi Alex,
    Possible to set the security permission for share files, not allow end users to printing and saving a PDF to another location.
    Based on my tests, users can save the document with only Read permission, which is by design. If you don’t want users to print files, please do not give the print permissions on printers.

  • CP1025nw won't print wirelessly; two copies of printer appear in the network!

    My two Macs running Mountain Lion (10.8) won't print wirelessly to the HP CP1025nw. HP Setup Assistant can't find the printer after it's set up wirelessly. The computers see the printer wirelessly when I try to add it, but there are TWO copies of the printer, and they won't print. Sometimes they seem to think the printer is already in use, possibly because there are two copies.
    The printer prints fine through USB, though.

    Same issue here, the CP1025nw can't print multiple copies UNLESS the user is a local administrator; which in this domain environment is not allowed. So another solution must be found.
    The common answer is to adjust the "mopier mode" however this driver does NOT allow for that to be changed. The universal drivers typically do have the mopier setting but I could not find any compatible colour universal 64bit drivers that would work with the CP1025nw.
    Even tried finding something in group policy and/or printer permissions, still no luck.
    Please help!

  • Unable To Print or Access Page Setup in Crystal Reports 2008

    I have Win 7 32 bit, and installed Crystal Reports 2008 last week (v12.0.0.683 from the Help window).
    Every time I open a report, and from the Preview tab clicking File -> Print, or File - > Page Setup, I immediately receive a Windows message that "Crystal Reports has stopped working".  After a few seconds, another Windows message displays "Crystal Reports has stopped working - a problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available".  Then Crystal completely closes.
    I downloaded sample reports from the BO website, and still receive the error, so I don't think it's the report.
    When I view the Event Log, I see the following:
    Faulting application name: crw32.exe, version: 12.0.0.683, time stamp: 0x47c8be9a

    I have uninstalled and reinstalled CR 2008 multiple times and continue to receive the same error.  I tried updating to SP1 (Version 12.1.0.892 Incremental) but I receive the following error: "A BusinessObjects product at a lower patch level is detected.  The installation cannot continue.  Please update all installed products to the SP1 patch level, then restart this installation".
    Need to print my reports - any ideas?

    Sorry busy on Support cases and they take precedence over this community forum.
    Very interesting....
    In a test application I use I have this routine to get the local printers:
    private void frmMain_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e)
         if (System.Drawing.Printing.PrinterSettings.InstalledPrinters.Count > 0)
              foreach(String myPrinter in System.Drawing.Printing.PrinterSettings.InstalledPrinters )
                   cboCurrentPrinters.Items.Add(myPrinter);
              cboCurrentPrinters.SelectedIndex = 0;
         else
              rdoCurrent.Enabled = false;
              EnableDisableCurrentControls(false);
         //For printers exposed to System account as per MS Kbase
         //http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;184291
         //Look to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Devices
         Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey mySystemPrinters =
              Microsoft.Win32.Registry.Users.OpenSubKey(@".DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Devices");
         foreach (String defaultPrinters in mySystemPrinters.GetValueNames())
              cboDefaultPrinters.Items.Add(defaultPrinters);
         if (cboDefaultPrinters.Items.Count > 0)
              cboDefaultPrinters.SelectedIndex = 0;
         else
              rdoDefault.Enabled = false;
    Note the MS Kabse on where the printer registry is. Now the odd part is on one of my test development PC's it won't populate the Default User Printer list, only the Local User Printers. I take this same app to another PC and it works just fine. The register keys are there but for some reason on my Windows 7 64 bit it won't show them, the other strange part is I have full access to both keys. I have not been able to figure out why this happens...
    I'm thinking this may be related to your issue.... But I don't have a solution, very strange... I've even gone into regedit32 and set full permissions on the various keys and it still doesn't work...
    I have other VM-ware images if I need to get past that part for testing so I never drilled into why, I believe it has to be some Windows/Firewall/Anti-virus configuration or something our IT department pushed into my local Profile.... What that is I don't know unfortunately.
    I'll do some looking and testing. You may want to post this on Microsoft forums as well.... Ask about printer permissions.
    Thanks
    Don

  • Acrobat Reader 11 only prints the first page of a multipage document.

    When printing a commercially created document with printing permissions enabled, only the first page prints when printing all or a selected range of pages on HP LaserJet 4000 and 8000 printers.  Access is denied is displayed on ocassion.

    They gotta fix this. It's been a huge problem for me for more than a year. I''ll defect to Chrome soon if they dont address this bug soon. Printing has been atrocious, even pathetic, i hate to say it. I can only print one page, maybe two if i am lucky. Sometimes, if it prints more than one page, the first page is mostly blank and the formatting of the text and sidebars is completely overlapped and sometimes unreadable. Basically, printing in Firefox is useless - it's a joke. I have to take the URL from Firefox and paste it into Chrome to get a decent print job. Why isnt this bug a higher priority?

  • VB6 Crystal Reports 8.5 - RDC Component to Export Reports To Printer

    Hi,
    We have an application written in VB6 that uses the RDC in Crystal Reports 8.5 to export reports the printer.  We are currently making some security changes to lock down several of our servers.  Currently our custom print queue for Crystal runs in windows services as administrator.  All the printers are installed as administrator.  As soon as we change our application to run as a different account (ie.  CrystalService) it no longer can find the printers.  I was wondering if there is a way for the windows service to recognize the printers installed as administrator without re-installing all printers on all servers as the new user Crystal Service.
    Thanks for your help and let me know if I can add anything to clarify the situation.

    Hi Chris,
    Other than re-installing under the new user account you can search Microsofts web site on how to change printer permissions. There is an article there that explains how to copy the Printer registry keys into the local user account.
    Then it should all work for you, this is all a Windows permission issue, not a Crystal Reports Issue.
    Thank you
    Don

  • Document Print & Modify on KM

    Hello All:
    I have a issue. I want a expert advice at the administration level i.e. Can i restrict users to take a print of my documents as well as restrict them to modify it. This problem is critically stuck.
    Lets assume if i even want to restrict authorized users to take a print.
    I would appreciate if we can enable anything such as this on KM. Early response from you all will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks a Lot'

    Hi Rashmi,
    It is not possible in KM to restrict users from printing the content. This is because KM is only a store for documents. Once you access a document, it is downloaded locally, and opened in its default viewer/editor (for instance Word, Excel, Adobe Reader). KM has no control over these applications.
    What you might consider is using only PDF's for your content, in which I think you do have control over print permissions (you'd need adobe license to create such PDF's).

    Johan

  • Changeing preferences on network printer queue with Powershell

    Ok, I want to run this (some...) script on a users computer, not on a server, to be able to change their printer preferences. In this case, a network attached printer with duplex default from the server would get simplex as default.
    We don't want to set up different queues on the server for different default settings. That's why we are trying with a script.

  • Print Jobs Stopped, Again...

    I really need help with this one; it has plagued me for years with 3 different computers and 3 different HP printers. I've read all the related posts with solutions that have worked for others, but now, none will help me. I've tried deleting and re-adding the printer; permissions repairs; Print Setup Repair; creating new accounts; complete print reset; deleting all HP driver; re-installing drivers; followed the step-by-step from HP - nothing has helped.
    As with others, the queue stops after starting.
    I need to know if this is an HP problem or an Apple problem (right now it's my problem). If I have to buy another printer, I will. But I don't want to buy another printer and have the same problem.
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Discussions Ken,
    That can be frustrating. I find that most HP direct connect printer problems can be solved by unplugging the printer from the computer and AC for a few minutes. Restore AC then attach to computer. What I see often is the printer stops talking to the computer.. thus it stops the que.
    If the AC trick doesn't work, then I: logging out and in again; deleting the printer and adding it again; reinstalling/updating drivers.

  • Printing and Signing PDF Security Questions

    Hi,
    I noticed one of the PDF security features for Acrobat 8.0 is to set the printing permissions between "None", "150 DPI", and "High Resolution". However, when I print between two PDF's with 150 DPI and max resolution, I honestly can barely notice the difference between the two (the 150 DPI is "slightly" worst, i.e. letters are slightly more jaggedly). I was wondering is this normal, as I was hoping the lower setting would make the printout hard to read, not just a "quick-print" (I used a Laser Printer with 1200 DPI). I don't mean to make a big deal out of it, but I personally do not think this a very useful feature from a security standpoint.
    Secondly, I'm having trouble creating signable PDF's. I basically want the file to only allow a user to sign, and nothing else, so I set the "Changes allowed" to just "filling in forms and signing existing signature fields". But doesn't seem to work, because instead I have to set it to allow "any except extracting page". Only then can I sign the PDF, but then this also allows it to be changed (which I don't want). Is there something wrong with what I'm doing? Any help is appreciated!

    It's a very common question, and as Michael says there's not a lot you can do. Even doing the imposition yourself is unlikely to help, as most commercial raster image processors (RIPs - the software which turns your document with its fonts, graphics etc into the pattern of dots needed to physically generate the image on the printing drum) need unencrypted files.
    If the print shop has an ad-hoc workflow which supports encryption (such as printing direct from Acrobat in the way desktop users do), there are plugins for Acrobat to handle the page imposition; but it's not something native to the application and the printer will have to give you very precise directions as to what layout to create. Many print shops won't entertain that idea unless there's an overriding commercial reason, as it's too much hassle for them to deal with errors in the client plates. Worth asking, but I doubt they'll agree to it.
    Given the need to send unsecured files to an external contractor for printing, your "protection" is in the form of the contract, not digital encryption. The former can be settled in court if they break the terms, the latter can be bypassed in ten seconds and you'll probably never know. If the files are truly too sensitive to send to anyone, it's time to get yourself a laser printer - these days the machines many local print shops rely on are in essence a color photocopier, and you can rent them for about the same price.
