Printer scanner operation severely degraded in 10.6.8

I have 2 iMacs and a MacBook, all connected via an Airport Extreme; three printers: Canon MF4350d, Epson Workforce 500, and Lexmark S800. After installing the update for 10.6.8 on August 17, 2011, on all three Macs, printing and scanning has been awful, to non-existent. I got updates to 10.6.8 from We-Fix-Macs, but the fixes do not "stick."
1. Network printing no longer works.
2. Printing via direct USB connection works on iMac, not on MacBook.
3. Scaning on these "all-in-one's" is no longer supported by Apple's 10.6.8, except via Image Capture. I.e., neither Epson Scan nor Canon's MF Toolbox work, even after updating all drivers and all Apple software updates. Scanning on the Lexmark NEVER worked, despite restoring the system, resetting permissions, etc. That is still a complete failure on all Macs. iMac [7,1] and MacBook just does not see the Lexmark scanner.
All printers worked fine over network and via USB before "upgrading" to 10.6.8. Printer and scanner management has been severely botched in 10.6.8. It's as if Apple has just abandoned maintaining continuity for previous printer/scanner models, or did not pay attention to QA issues. Without a decent fix from Apple to their operating system, I expect to go back to 10.6.7 and a wait a year before doing any further upgrades. I'm not really interested in geeky work-arounds for Apple's failures. Everything but the Lexmark scanner used to work fine, over the network or via USB. I doubt I am the only person with this problem.

First off we are just simple users here like yourself. If you are unhappy with the way your printers and other devices are working, then please send feedback to Apple, at > Apple - Feedback
Second there are updates for your printers, at > Apple - Support - Downloads
Lastly I have always used Image Capture with my Epson all in one printers in both Leopard and Snow Leopard, because it works as well or better than the printers scanning software.

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook and Bluetooth and HP Simplepass complications since doing a Windows upgrade. Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant. Just download and run the application. Just to make sure all drivers and software are updated as well.
Here is a document on troubleshooting and using Bluetooth if needed. Under the tips for finding a Bluetooth device, there is a section on making sure the wireless communication is turned on. This is an important section.
Here is another document with some great information about Bluetooth fixes.
Here is a link to troubleshoot the HP Simplepass software.
The HP SimplePass Identity Protection Software must be updated to v8.00.57 or later. Here is a link to download the latest. You will have to uninstall the old software.

I GIVE UP on HP - Recco for new printer/scanner that WORKS?

I have wasted several hours trying to get my brand new HP F4180 All-In-One printer to scan.
I can print, but I can not scan. I have tried installing the software from the disc, and downloaded the new beta software. The beta software always says installed successfully, then reports 0 bytes installed and HP application folder is empty. I have already tried deleting the folder and uninstalling the printer and reinstalling. I have repaired permissions. I have rebooted several times. Nothing ever installs.
I have read the forums and found hundreds of complaints and some people seem to have fixed things but nothing has worked for me.
My time is more valuable than this completely useless printer/scanner. If I didn't need the scanner I wouldn't have bought an all in one.
Can anyone recommend an all in one printer/scanner with a scanner that works out of the box under Leopard. Epson? Anything that I could buy at the Apple Store retail or Best Buy?
Would be great if you could scan while attached to an Airport Extreme under Bonjour, but I am guessing I may need a direct USB connection
If you make a recco and it works, I will promise NEVER to buy anything from HP again. I swear.

I have a Canon PIXMA MP600 that I bought less than a year ago at the apple store. I just tried scanning with it and it appears to work great under Leopard. Note that it's critical to download the latest drivers from Canon (one of which was updated literally yesterday), and not use the software on the CD that comes with the printer.
I've played with HP printers before and it seems like the Canon software is smaller and simpler.
WRT the Airport Extreme, as far as I know you can only print if you have the printer plugged into that, not scan.

Scans using the Printer/Scanner utility in MAC OS 10.9 disappear.

I am having new issues with scanning documents on my HP Photosmart Premium Series C309 All-in-One printer/scanner.
I have been able to successfully scan and save documents, but just recently, something happened. It appears the scanner is successfully scanning the documents, and I am able to inpput my "save to" information, but the documents are now disappearing into cyber space.
I am operating wirelessly via a Mac Book Pro with OS 10.9 (I believe).
Can someone guide me to what is going wrong and what to do about it please? I've tried using the utilities and help available online and in my computer

Hi Spirit Dancer,
You may scan using Image Capture or Preview, the HP Scan application for your printer is not intended for Mavericks and such save issues are expected.
Follow the workaround below to scan from your printer to Mac OS X 10.9:

Printer and printer-scanner isn't recognised by Acrobat 7.1 Professional, though it is by Reader

I'm running Acrobat 7.1 Professional with latest updates, on a WinXP system (SP3). Printer-scanner is a Brother 420CN and a laser printer HL 2040. Neither is recognised by Acrobat, although I can print to them from Reader (latest version) and any other program. This failure to recognise printer occurred failry recently, possibly after a recent update to Acrobat? I've tried "Detect and repair", but it appears to not run. (A dialogue screen flashes and disappears too fast to read) I've reinstalled Acrobat using the msi file in the Acrobat folder. Nothing has made any diference - still no printer!
In print set-up or print, a dialogue box asks "Before you can perform printer related taks, such as print set-up or printing a document, you need to install a printer. Do you want to install a printer now?". On selecting "Yes" another box opens stating that "Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running" However on checking component services, print spooler is running! I've checked this both before and after going through this dialogue.
I was unable to reinstall Acrobat over the present installation using the opriginal CD as it recognised the installed (and updated) Acrobat as being of a later version than the version on the CD, and I didn't want to uninstall and then reinstall as I wanted to keep the document history. (Is history in a file that I can copy and keep during an install, or is it not deleted during uninstall?)
Has anyone else faced and solved this printing problem? Has anyone any suggestions?

If you are using a Windows based computer, follow the instructions for resetting the AMDS > How to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) on Windows
Reset the AMDS then see if the battery will charge while the iPhone is on.
If not, try a reset.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
No data is lost due to a reset.

Scan Control from HP 1210 All in one Printer/Scanner

I now have Macbook with OS 10.6.8.
Used to have 10.4.11
We have an HP 1210 All in one printer/scanner.
With 10.4 there was a very clear and user friendly utility provided by HP that enabled good scan control.
It enabled multiple choices of destination filetype and multiple pages scanned into a single document.
Now I have 10.6.
I have done S/W update both with printer connected and disconnected.
I have been offered and have downloaded the latest version of s/w from HP.
Nowhere on my Mac is there a file that has any name like HP, Hewlett Packard or PSC or 1210
The utility is there somewhere because I can print, and, if I have the printer active, I can use the utility to check ink levels etc.
However the ONLY scan facility is the Mac IMage Capture.
This only does single pages and only scans to jpeg.
What do I have to do to get my full scan control facility back and active as provided by HP

I Have just done a test using the SystemPreferences Printer area and get sent to the Image capture function.
So, that was after clicking the Scan tab in System Preferences > Print & Fax? It's most likely using the HP Software that you noted downloading in your original post. It is not using some phantom software.
I want to be able to save a multiple page document file in .pdf format.
I use Acrobat Professional to scan as PDF with a Brother multifuction device that is equiped with a 30 page auto document feeder (ADF). Since the HP 1210 is a flat-bed scanner, it seems that your wish can be achieved by scanning and saving each page as separate documents and then combining those documents. I cannot remember whether Apple Preview in 10.6.x offers combining PDFs but there are a number of freeware and shareware apps that can.
Is there a conversion capability that would convert from .jpeg to .pdf
Apple Preview, Adobe Photoshop, GraphicConverter are just a few apps that come to mine.

Depending on the OS, you would download the Full Featured Software for that OS.Then making sure you have your USB cord ready to connect the two together, install the software and follow the instructions as it installs. Default printer/scanner settings

Hello all,
I have a Canon pixma printer/scanner, and would like to change the default scanner setting.
Everytime i open the scanner the default scan folder is pictures, i would like to change this default. Does anyone know if it is possible to change this, and if so how i can change this?

Did this happen after a firmware update? Does the printer see the wireless network and connect, but still won't print or scan? What operating system are you running and what did the Print and Scan Doctor say? Or did everything pass?
Try accessing the EWS. To do so open a web browser and type "HTTP://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/" where the X's are your printer's IP address (network address) and press enter. If the web page loads then the printer is connected to the network.
Let me know what happens.

      HP SimplePass Series 8 is fussy, fragile, prone to failure, and may stop working for its own reasons.
                                                                                  No Guarantees.
You can try a Hard Reset - this is just a simple device / driver reset and is NOT the dreaded Operating System installation.
There is no Repair option for the Series 8 HP SimplePass program; you can try reinstalling the latest program over the top of itself -- that is, install the program without removing the existing version from the system.
Start with the section named Pile of Rubble - Hard Reset fix in the following Dragon Document:
Simple Instructions to Upgrade HP SimplePass
If the Pile of Rubble - Hard Reset fails to provide the desired results, consider trying other repair options in the document.
For example, You might try the following Sections from the document (in order):
Export Webcards
Complete Backups
Create Restore Point
(Re) Install the Existing Fingerprint Driver from the Device Manager
Next:
If you are running Series 6 SimplePass then:
SimplePass Repair – Series 6
OR, if you are running Series 8 SimplePass, then:
HP SimplePass Software >> sub-section Series 8 >> (Re)Install the latest version of the software over the top of your existing software
NOTES:
Hard Reset is not a Windows Reset. You are OK. No worries. Read the instructions.
Drivers are always (re)installed first, reboot
Software is (re)installed next, reboot
When dealing with Series 8 SimplePass ON windows 8.x, do NOT remove the Native Windows 8 logon Validity software in Programs and Features.

Make sure you have updated all of your scanner drivers. Check Software update and check with Epson tech support.
Not sure if the Gutenprint and Gimp-Print for Mac OS X (10.2 and later) drivers deal with scanners. Read the info on their website.
Check Apple's Knowledge Base for Snow Leopard & Lion Printer solutions and suggestions for scanner troubleshooting. Especially if you have an all in one.

My finger print scanner for logging on to web pages no longer works in firefox 4

My laptop has a finger print scanner that manages passwords. You scan your finger to log on to various pages or accounts instead of typing in the log in information. It worked flawlessly in the older version of Firefox, but since upgrading to Firefox 4 it no longer works. I checked and it still works with Windows.

Since installing Mavericks I am unable to scan using my HP printer/scanner. I have uninstalled the software and tried to just use Apple method - but really cannot find out how to scan and save. Does anyone have any ideas?

If the steps above do not work, these printer troubleshooting tips may also help with scanner troubleshooting:
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again. Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.

Printer/Scanner cannot find my email client

Using my Deskjet 2540 scanner, and wish to send a scan via email, If I select "scan to email" the result is a message " The HP scan application cannot find a email application installed on this computer.....etc "     I use Mozilla Thunderbird as my email, there is nowhere in the scanner software to enter or search for Thunderbird , can anyone help as to how I tell the printer,   /scanner where my email program is .
at the moment i have to scan to file and then email it,    but not suitable for multi pages etc.

PSC 1315 no longer supported for scanning since Mac OS X v10.5 or while using any newer OS, there is no scan software provided by either HP or Apple (Image Capture)

Image capture will not recognize your device as well, only print is supported as you may find listed for teh PSC 1310 Series below:

Although there is no official scanning support for your device you may still try the 3rd party VueScan software which list your scanner as supported and compatible with Mountain Lion:
