Printer Setup for Aperture and Epson R1800

After installing the upgrade to 1.5, something went wrong with my printer setup for both my R1800 and my PictureMate Deluxe.
I've done the following:
Reset the printer system.
Reinstalled the Drivers
Attempted to Print from Aperture using about 30 + combinations of settings.
I'm still getting colors that are off and overall dark photos.
Best Setting appears to be
Printer Settings
Print Settings
Media Type: Premium Glossy Photo Paper
Color: Color
Mode: Advanced (Photo, High Speed, Finest Detail, Off)
Color Management
Off (No Color Adjustment)
ColorSync Profile: SPR1800 PrmGlsy Photo.icc
Black Point Compensation = Checked
Gamma 1.10
The resulting pictures appear to be about 1 f-stop or so underexposed and the colors are off (I'm color blind, so I can't say exactly how). I know that it is the setup of the printer settings. If I print the same pictures from Nikon Capture on my Windows computer, the print is perfect. I prefer to use Aperture for my photo work.
Epson doesn't have Aperture and doesn't understand all of the settings. The Apple Care support tech stated that he is not qualified to answer and said to call back when the Aperture team is working. I've got a ton of Christmas gifts to print out!
Assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-William

you don't state in your original posting whether or not you've calibrated your monitors, especially to a 2.2 Gamma. in order to get the most accurate screen->print matching you have to hardware calibrate your monitors. this is by far the single most significant improvement i've made in my workflow. prior to calibration my monitors were set to a gamma of 1.8 which is much brighter than 2.2 and this causes you to NOT correct your images with the additional exposure required for proper printing. my prints were always too dark prior to calibration.
the spyder 2 from color vision is an excellent choice.

  • Print quality with Aperture and Epson RX580

    Hi all,
I feel like I've tried everything, but I just can't get Aperture (the latest version with all the updates) to print from my MacBook Pro on my Epson photo printer the way I could from other photo software on my old PCs.  On my old PCs, when I would print a photo from Canon DPP or Capture One, or even the Windows photo management software, I get a rich menu of dialogue boxes for the Epson printer offering different qualities of prints, different papers to choose from, "photo enhancement," and lots of other options.  Prints came out sharp, colorful, and just great.
When I print from Aperture, I get none of these options (I get color management and resolution, and that's about it).
When I print from Aperture, I get vertical lines in the prints, visible dots, and pixellation.  So what I do is email the "exported" versions to my daughter's PC laptop and print from there -- and get good results.  Boy, that's a pain.
Surely Aperture can do better than this.  So what am I missing?  Any ideas for what I should be doing?
    Thank you.

Canon MP990 and Macbook pro (os X snow lep.. and Lion) - Lines in prints in Aperture.
While a bit vague I got there and found the distinction between the printer driver managing it and the printer managing the photo quality causing the issues.
I could only transfer the pic's to iphoto and print for ( admitedly about the same time of more than a year).
    The FIX
in the first window after selecting print scroll down to rendering and select printer managed.
Select all the other settings you need then select print on the right bottom of this window.
This next dialogue box at the bottom is a show details button then a new set of menus are present (initial is layout in a pull down menu)  select color matching then automatic ( you can change this but it worked so if it is not broken I'll play later ).
You should have clear prints with no lines...

  • Printing Problems with CS3 and Epson R1800

Recently upgraded to CS3 and have now lost most printing options for Epson Stylus Photo R1800. Had no problems with CS2 running in Leopard. Anyone know what has happened?

    >"Unfortunately then I'd have to say all bets are off. The only true test is to print with the standard materials that Epson has designed their printer for. Only if that works well should you be trying third-party materials. For example, third-party inks in general are of poorer quality, are inconsistent, clog more, and in the long run, do not save you anywhere the amount of money they advertise over the genuine Epson products."
Getting very nice results with an R1800, Inkjetfly CIS, and Red River paper. The R1800 has never had Epson ink run through it and has no abnormal clogging problems. In fact, clogs are rare.
Getting near perfect matches to the monitor with both Colorvision and x-rite calibrating/profiling equipment. The printer stays on 24-7 so the only ink used, other than printing, is a periodic nozzle check. I am not alone in this, so blanket statements like the above are specious at best.
And no, I don't sell prints for big bux, so whether they are going to last a hundred years is not a concern. Besides, until someone is around long enough to verify those claims, the jury is out. I've got color prints from the wet days that are fading after 20+ years. Third party inks are not necessarily lower quality than OEM. One of the reasons for the development of high quality third party inks was the dissatisfaction of B&W and fine art printers with the OEM products.
Of course the cheap refilled/knockoff carts being hawked on ebay and the like are a different story.

  • Wireless print server that works with Macs and Epson R1800?

    Hi,
I'm looking to buy a wireless print server, which I could use as if the printer was connected directly to my Mac. So basically, it just needs to have printing over IP port (like port 9100 on HP JetDirect) and drivers for Mac OS X (or ideally, no special drivers needed at all). Devices that do sharing of the printer only over LPD (older Unix), SMB (Windows), IPP (Cups / newer Unix) or similar protocols is not what I'm looking for here.
The reason why LPD, SMB and IPP are not an option is that I'll need utilities such as Epson Printer Utility to work over the network too.
It looks like Linksys, Belkin and some other have products that allow access to the printer over port 9100 (standard HP JetDiret's port) as if the printer was connected directly to the computer. However, for the most part I was able to find only success stories for Windows users.
Windows has standard driver that allows connection to the printer to be easily switched from USB port to network port. Does OS X comes standard with that feature, or is the special driver needed?
Most importantly, has anybody had success with printing from Mac through wireless print server (any brand) to Epson R1800? Did the Epson Print Utility (checking the ink levels, checking and cleaning the head, etc) work? Any special drivers needed?
    Thanks

direwolf has hit the nail on the head - the Epson driver won't work for IP printing. The Epson driver is a Carbon driver, where they build the comm protocols into the driver instead of enabling use of the standard protocols on OS X (that are part of the CUPS system). You'll need a CUPS driver to use the standard network protocol(s). The printfab driver is a CUPS driver.
Exception - the Apple Extreme/Express/etc print servers have firmware that make them work like Macs - Mac-to-Mac sharing works with USB-only drivers! I hesitate to recommend the Extreme/Express, because Apple can't seem to get all the kinks out.

  • Another problem printing with Aperture and Epson 2400.

    Hi -
I posted this on photo.net a while ago and nobody could seem to figure this out. I've searched through here with no help either. Here is the original photo.net post presenting my problem:
I've been having a problem with my print workflow that started about 6 months ago but has only now gotten to the point that I really need to fix it.
My equipment: Epson R2400 with stock inks, Aperture (latest version), iMac 2.33Ghz fully loaded and updated. I typically print on Epson Premium Luster or Enhanced Matte (I change K cartridge accordingly).
Once upon a time, I had this workflow working perfectly. Prints were coming out exactly as I wanted them to, really better than expected. Then something changed, but it wasn't hardware. Somewhere along the line, I'm guessing in a software update, all my profiles changed. I typically do all my adjustments in Aperture, then in the print dialogs do the following:
+In the 2400 settings, I turn color management off, and in the Print Settings, I select my paper, switch to Advanced, and typically choose Best Photo or whatever quality I'm needing.+
+Then in the Aperture print settings I choose the ColorSync profile that matches the paper and quality I selected in the above Print Settings window, keep Black Point Compression checked, and I'm off. As I said - this has worked flawlessly up until recently.+
The one thing I noticed that has changed is the available profiles in Aperture's ColorSync Profile pulldown menu. It used to only show paper profiles specific to each paper and quality, ie. "SPR2400 PremLuster BstPhoto.icc". Now, it shows not only those specific profiles, but also more generic paper profiles, such as "SPR2400 PremiumLuster", with no quality specification.
The problem is this: When I now select the paper/quality-specific profile, as I used to do, the prints come out all washed-out and flat. It even shows this in the preview window. It's slightly better when I select these new generic paper profiles, but still not like what I had. This is true with both types of paper I use.
I've attempted all the usual fixes, such as trashing all my profiles and re-loading new ones from Epson, re-installing Aperture and Epson software, and trashing prefs. Heck, I've reloaded all software that even remotely related to photography so many times, I can't even count any more. Nothing - just washed-out, dead-looking prints every time. And it all changed when I noticed those new generic profiles mentioned above.
I did make one hardware change after I first started experiencing these problems. I went from a PPC Dual 2.8Ghz G5 to the iMac, but as I said, these problems first occurred on the G5 and continued with the new iMac.
    Any thoughts?

Well, you could dump Aperture only to find that a 2.0 came along with OS 10.5 and fixed your problem, who knows.
And I wouldn't call 6 months of not being able to print anything at all from Aperture jumping to conclusions. When I press Apple P in any other application I get prints that even unprofiled will come out better than Aperture. It's serious. Not just sorta bad. The ocean looks like sewage water- not just mildly unappealing- sewage.
The solution for us, I suppose, is to buy calibrator hardware. I guess anyone who is professional should have one of these (and I do not) but I didn't buy Aperture to export for printing.
As far as how to get Apple to acnowledge this... I don't know. It seems as though they are tired of hearing me talk about this. This is the first post of recent about this that hasn't been deleted by an admin. Who knows? I'm just tired of having to buy all the hardware and all the software that is all supposed to work together and then once you pay, you find that you're up the creek for prints.
Don't get me started, or I'll start talking about how they don't support my camera make yet (or ever).... (Sigma). As you can imagine, I'm already IMPORTING 16 bit tiffs from my raw converter. I guess I need 3 copies of the same shot to do business in Aperture for now. I need some mylanta.
    Otherwise, love ya Apple!
P.S. If you are looking for someone with the same hardware and problem as I, it's easy. Check out the print proofing podcast page on O'reilly "Inside Aperture". There's one there in the comments part (that I replied to). Others can be found on this forum.

  • For printer LaserJet Professional CM1410 any chance to set printing password for windows and MAC

    Dear All
for printer  LaserJet Professional CM1410 any chance to set printing password for windows and MAC?please help?

What Windows OS are you using?  Are you networked?
If you are networked, you have to setup your file and print sharing options in order to require password assess.  If you are just trying to control specific files from being printed, you can do that, too.
If you are just trying to control the amount of printing off of a single PC with a printer, you could setup different accounts for each user and limit their access.
Some of the commercial printers can have password options, but I do not find any password options for the CM 1410, other than what I provided earlier.
If I have been helpful, a Kudo is always appreciated.

  • Annoture - Metadata Bridging Solution for Aperture and iView

    Aperture and iView users:
I just released Annoture, a metadata bridging solution for Aperture and iView MediaPro! With Annoture, you’re just a click away from sharing metadata between these two popular image management and cataloguing applications. Spend more time working with your decisive moments than worrying about double-entry and incomplete metadata!
Annoture lets you transfer annotations from iView MediaPro catalogs to Aperture projects and albums and back. This two-way transfer of IPTC and metadata information means you are not tied to any one application for your image management and workflow needs. Annoture also features a modular interface that can be extended to support additional applications in the future.
    http://www.tow.com/software/annoture/
Users of Aperture and iView can download a fully-functional version of Annoture. The unregistered version will occasionally display a reminder to register, and all images processed in Aperture by Annoture will have a custom “Annotated with Annoture!” tag added. You can remove these items with the full version after purchasing and entering your license code.
    Enjoy!

Automator actions require either APIs for the program, or Applescript support. There's no public API for Aperture, and the built-in actions pretty much cover all the current Applescript commands. I doubt we'll be seeing any third-party Aperture actions for awhile.

  • Leopard + Aperture 2 + Epson R1800 == very dark prints

    Hi,
Before I upgraded to Leopard, I was able to get very nice prints from Aperture on my Epson R1800 printer.
After I upgraded to Leopard, the prints end up very dark. A bit of additional info follows.
    My monitor is correctly calibrated.
I installed new drivers from Epson's website (v6.12), and I verified I'm using those, and not Apple's Gutenprint drivers.
In the print settings I turn color management off, and than select correct ICC profile in the Aperture that matches paper and quality settings. For example, for printing on Epson Premium Glossy paper with PhotoRPM settings, I select "SPR1800 PrmGlsy PhotoRPM.icc" profile. Hit print, and after a bit of time the print comes out of the printer very dark. This sounds like ICC profile got dropped someplace along the way (in Aperture? in driver?).
If I go the other route, and let driver/printer manage color by selecting either normal or vivid options in print settings, and than use "system managed" setting in Aperture, the prints come out bright (maybe even a bit too bright). However, in this case the colors are off. Very off. Skin tones are especially bad with strong yellowish cast (people on the prints look if they were seriously sick).
Has anybody managed to get usable prints from Aperture 2 + Leopard combo on Epson R1800? Or any other comparable Epson printer (R800, R2400, new R1900)?
Searching forums, I found a lot of articles discussing Leopard and Epson printers problems for Adobe products (CS2/CS3/LightRoom), but not much for Aperture 2.
Unrelated question... I attempted to ask this in Aperture forum, but there was no post link. Do I need something special to be able to ask questions there?

Well, believe it or not, with the help of Epson support on the phone, I've figured this out. First of all, there is definitely a problem with Aperture's color management. What used to work (setting a color profile in the Aperture print dialog, and selecting "no color management" in the printer dialog) definitely does not work at this point.
If you want color management, what you have to do is select "System Managed" in the Aperture print dialog, and select "Color Controls - Epson Standard" in the Epson dialog. What this does is select the standard Epson profile for the paper you have selected. For example, if you've chosen Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper, the printer driver will use the "SPR1800 Premium Glossy" profile (Epson's standard profile for that paper, assuming you've downloaded it). Of course, that gives you Epson's version of what you want to print. If you have created your own profiles, using a spectrophotometer for example, you need to get the printer driver to apply YOUR profile instead of Epson's.
Here's how to apply your profile: Open Colorsync (in the Utilities folder), and select "Printers" in the Devices menu. Under the printer model, Stylus Photo R1800, for my case, select the profile for the paper you're interested in, say "SPR1800 Premium Glossy", and look on the right side of the window at "Current Profile:". Click the down arrow, and select "Other". Navigate to the profile you've created, and click "Open". This will set the profile you've created as what the printer driver will use when it thinks it's applying the SPR1800 Premium Glossy profile. Set other paper profiles (e.g., "SPR1800 Enhanced Matte") to whatever profile you've created for those papers.
Now, when you select "System Managed" in the Aperture dialog, and "Color Controls - Epson Standard" in the Epson dialog, it will apply your own profile.
Hopefully, Apple will fix the problem with color management, and we'll be able to go back to color management as it was before. In the meantime, this is the only work-around I've found.

  • How to save print setup for pdf file so that every user can open and print w/o manually performing?

Can is there a way to configure the print settings (i.e. paper size, orientation, etc.) and save this setting as part of the pdf file? I would like the users of pdf files to be able to open the file and simply print, without having to manually configure the print settings.

Not sure if this will help. I got this information from the built-in help under Acrobat 9.
    Advanced
Lists PDF settings, print dialog presets, and reading options for the document. In the PDF settings for Acrobat, you can set a base Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for web links in the document. Specifying a base URL makes it easy for you to manage web links to other websites. If the URL to the other site changes, you can simply edit the base URL and not have to edit each individual web link that refers to that site. The base URL is not used if a link contains a complete URL address.
You can also associate a catalog index file (PDX) with the PDF. When the PDF is searched with the Search PDF window, all of the PDFs that are indexed by the specified PDX file are also searched.
You can include prepress information, such as trapping, for the document. You can define print presets for a document, which prepopulate the Print dialog box with document-specific values. You can also set reading options that determine how the PDF is read by a screen reader or other assistive device.
    Create print presets
A PDF can contain a set of print presets, a group of document-specific values that is used to set basic print options. By creating a print preset for a document, you can avoid manually setting certain options in the Print dialog box each time you print the document. It’s best to define print settings for a PDF at the time that you create it, but print presets provide a means to add basic print settings to a PDF at any time.
Choose File > Properties, and click the Advanced tab.
In the Print Dialog Presets section, set options and click OK.
The next time you open the Print dialog box, the values will be set to the print preset values. These settings are also used when you print individual documents in a PDF Portfolio.
Note: To retain a print preset for a PDF, you must save the PDF after creating the print preset.
    Print Dialog Presets
    Page Scaling
Prepopulates the Page Scaling option in the Print dialog box with the option you choose:
    Default
Uses the application default setting, which is Shrink To Printable Area.
    None
Prevents automatic scaling to fit the printable area. This setting is useful for preserving the scale of page content in engineering documents, or for ensuring that documents print at a particular point size to be legal.
    DuplexMode
For best results, the selected printer should support duplex printing if you select a duplex option.
    Simplex
Prints on one side of the paper.
    Duplex Flip Long Edge
Prints on both sides of the paper; the paper flips along the long edge.
    Duplex Flip Short Edge
Prints on both sides of the paper; the paper flips along the short edge.
    Paper Source By Page Size
Selects the option by the same name in the Print dialog box. Uses the PDF page size to determine the output tray rather than the page setup option. This option is useful for printing PDFs that contain multiple page sizes on printers that have different-sized output trays.
    Print Page Range
Prepopulates the Pages box in the Print Range section of the Print dialog box with the page ranges you enter here. This setting is useful in a workflow where documents include both instruction pages and legal pages. For example, if pages 1–2 represent instructions for filling out a form, and pages 3–5 represent the form, you can set up your print job to print multiple copies of only the form.
    Number Of Copies
Prepopulates the Copies box in the Print dialog box. Choose a number from 2 to 5, or choose Default to use the application default, which is one copy. This limitation prevents multiple unwanted copies from being printed.
    Thanks.
