Printer Setup Utiliity eliminated from Leopard

Why was the printer set up utility eliminated from Leopard? Used it successfully for years with printing 4-page monthly newsletter written with Pages, duplexed on HP 5550dn. Downloaded Leopard in G5 Power Mac initially but lost Safari bookmarks, Eudora e-mail address book plus unable to open other programs until they play catchup with upgrades. Couldn't print from three networked HP LaserJet printers. Disgusted I went back to old reliable Tiger OS 10.4.10. Then installed Leopard in GG Mac Pro. Glutton for punishment. Same problems but managed to survive and solved printer issue, including being able to compress Pages docs to e-mail reduced file size in pdf. Still unable to resolve Safari bookmark issue.
Not a happy camper being old Mac addict since day one when Jobs was a pup surviving many upgrades, but why did Apple eliminate the Printer Setup Utility Utility in Leopard? Thanks and Regards. Ol' Jim

I just came across this "Missing USB class driver" problem today and was able to get it to work. I followed the Troubleshooting section in this page from Lexmark.com: http://www.lexmark.com/lexmark/sequentialem/home/0,6959,2048165961160493508_0en,00.html
The only problem was when I deleted the Lexmark folder in /Library/Printers/ and then tried to empty the trash, it wouldn't let me empty one file (LexmarkCUPSDriver) because it was saying it was being used. I ended up looking for instances of it in Activity Monitor and force quitting each one (I found 5 of them). After that I went ahead and installed the Lexmark drivers from the Optional Installs package in the Leopard CD. After the install, I went ahead and added my printer back in Print & Fax. I have been able to print fine afterwards. Hope this helps.

  • Printing to HP d145 from leopard

    Hi
Desparately need help printer doesnt want to do anything I have reset all defaults on both Imac and printer to no avail.
    Any help would be great!

I am successfully printing to my HP d145 from leopard after much frustration and useless support from HP. I stumbled across an article on the web that said to uninstall the HP software package using the HP uninstaller in the HP folder in the Applications folder. After doing that and removing and reinstalling the printer in the Preferences panel Print & Fax, only the Leopard gutenprint driver was operative and it now works for printing. Of course, my previously available 2 sided printing is not supported and I haven't tried faxing or scanning yet, but I do have a very expensive, but operating USB, not shareable, printer again.

  • Printer Setup Utility not working and autostopping jobs for an HP

I have both an Epson Stylus R200 and an HP Photosmart 2570 series all-in-one. the epson prints fine, but the HP doesn't at all. it keeps stopping the jobs i send to the HP. The HP is also a scanner and i can do scans so i know its not a problem with the physical USB connection.
To attempt to fix this problem, i try to open the Printer Setup Utility. I've tried to open the utility 3 seperate ways. 1) from the menu item "utility" in th e HP printer dock item
    2) from "Utilities/PRinter Setup Utility
    3) from System Preferences "Printing/Faxing>setup printers"
still the utility appears to be running on my dock, and the menus on the top appear (Edit View Printers Windows Help) simply won't drop down and let me use the Utility.
is my Printer Setup Utility COrrupted? if so, where can i find a replacement download without reinstalling Panther?
i searched the apple downloads to no avail.
    restarting now.
    any help is appreciated. thanks

thanks for your repsonse greg, however this is not resolved.
ok, i know ive got the 10.3.9 update installed successfully. in fact, i decided to reinstall OS X completely and update from there. this took much time. i backed up all system files manually and erase and installed OS X. i am having multiple problems still as a result, such as dreamweaver m not booting, but that goes beyond the scope of this help thread.
but, i can finally open the Printer Setup Utility. i did not find my old R200 drivers so I reinstalled the R200 driver. I also ran the HP all-in-one software. now, whats left to do is add these two printers in the utility.
When i select from the add printer dialogue, "EPSON USB" it find the R200 driver, then i try to select "add" and it gives me this error: "An error occurred while trying to add the selected printers successful-ok-conflicting-attributes"
when attempting to add the HP all in one to the utility, it won't even find the HP driver. Before i re-installed the HP all-in-one software, it had found it but gave me the exact same error as above. also in the add new printer dialogue the menu item that should say "USB" is just blank, and when i select what should say "usb" anyway, it.
i deleted two files in the Library/Preferences/ folder that started with com.apple.print they appeared to be default configuration files. after rebooting the utility, the same problem persists.
any other suggestions? now i can't print at ALL.

  • Printing to XP from Leopard. Can't. Frustrated.

I am trying to print from Leopard to XP. Lots of admin experience..
    - I can print from my Tiger Powerbook with no issues. I've setup a ghostprinter/gsprint postscript queue that accepts postscript and feeds it to the HP 5610 queue marvelously. Config came from this link:
    http://iharder.sourceforge.net/current/macosx/winmacprinter/
    - tried exact same config on leopard box - sometimes doc will show up in xp queue as type RAW and cause the whole system to become constipated. Have to dig in and empty queue manually.
    - tried using Advanced> Windows setup the SMB url. Authentication dialog comes up (too?) quickly and authenticates with no errors to console or otherwise.
    - document does not appear in XP queue
    - tried LPD connection (have daemon running on XP box) and doc does not appear
    - my last resort will be to physically move the printer to the Leopard box and try printing in the other direction XP -> Leopard
I will send you a christmas card if you can help.
    Regards,
    Shaun McArthur

I hate the HP printing dynasty. They need to be spanked.
I solved this issue by physically moving the printer to my leopard box.
Immediately, all my Macs (god bless 'em) could print and fax. No effort. Thank you Apple.
Then, from the XP network browser, I opened the shared printer and tried to bring up it's properties. XP complained about not having a proper driver installed, so I installed the first Apple Postscript driver that appeared and vi-ola, it's printing just fine (but not faxing - oh well).
Lesson learned. Printers go on Mac boxes, XP boxes are networked to the printers, until they are replaced with Mac boxes

    Shaun

  • Printing to a Print Server from Leopard

I am a new Mac user, but have been in the IT for a long time. I have a Troy200 wireless print server at home that connects to Brother HL-1440 laser printer via a USB port. I print from all my Windows workstations to the Brother wirelessly. The way printing is set up in Windows is as follows: The HL-1440 driver is assigned to use a "Standard TCP/IP Port". The IP address of my Troy200 print server is 192.168.200.10. The Port Settings in Windows are configured for "Raw", and the Port Number is 9101. The Troy200 has the ability to work with up to 8 USB-based printers when a USB hub is used. I don't use a USB hub -- I connected my Brother HL-1440 directly to the Troy200's USB port. The first USB device connected to the Troy200 uses TCP port 9101.
I have absolutely no problems printing from Windows to the Troy200 print server. However, I can't get printing to work from my new Macbook Air running Leopard 10.5.2.
I select the IP Printing option on the Print/Fax confuguration applet in System Preferences. There are three options there: IPP, LPD, and CUPS. I tried both IPP and CUPS, and using the "192.168.250.10" address as well as "192.168.250.10:9101". Then I select the driver from the drop-down list for my printer "Brother HL-1440". When I try to print, all I get is a jumping printer icon on the dock.
The problem is that I need to be able to specify TCP port 9101. I can't find a place in the printer configuration utility where I can enter the TCP port number. Again, using "192.168.250.10:9101" doesn't work.
Also, there are actually two printer drivers for the Brother HL-1440 listed among printer drivers in Leopard. One of them is a "gutenprint" driver. I tried both of them, and neither one worked. Actually, when I go to the status page on my print server after I try to print from Leopard, the status of the printer is "sleep". So, it doesn't appear that the print job from sent from my Macbook Air even hits the print server.
I can ping my print server from my Macbook Air, and I can even http to its admin pages. So, the network connectivity is fine.
    Please help the newbie!

you should start a new thread, you'd have a better chance of getting an answer. I'll try to answer your question.

    Greg,
I'm running Panther Server 10.3.9 in a vLAN with 16 OS 9 clients. They all print to 2 Xerox Phaser 6200 and 6250 network printers. I am unable to print to either one. I have limited desk space so a USB-attached printer, while more convenient, is impractical. When I run Classic from the Server, I can print to the Phasers.
that means that OS X is seeing the printers. When you print in Classic, what happens is that the Classic drivers (LaserWriter 8) hands off the print jobs to the appropriate OS X drivers, which do the actual printing.
I can connect to administer them both with a browser.
this definitely means that you can see the printers.
I have all the drivers I should need (new re-installs), but print jobs stop every time.
Does this mean that the drivers are installed and are visible in Print & Fax?
Is there a log file or some way I can see why these jobs fail?]
There are logs, some of which are visible in CUPS using the browser.
What error messages are you getting?
Do you have any pearls of wisdom?
    Thanks

  • Removing print drivers from Leopard

is it a)advisable and b)easy to remove unwanted printe drivers from Leopard's Library folder?

The printer folder is 2.7gb big, and I only use an Epson and/or a Lexmark, so I thought I might free up space to create an eDrive for TechTool. David Pogue's useful book on Leopard says you just trash unwanted drivers, but an article I just read online at Peachpit says that this can cause printing problems so I have a twinge of nervousness

  • No Print Settings when printing from Leopard to a shared Epson on Tiger

I don't know if this is related to the printing problems in Aperture before Security Update 2008-002 v1.1 but I am still experiencing a missing "Print Settings" menu when printing from MacOS X 10.5.2 (Intel) to an Epson 4800 shared on a Mac (PowerPC) running Tiger. The printer is connected by FireWire.
I tried sharing the printer from a Mac running Leopard and the menu shows fine and printing is perfect. When printing from Leopard directly to the printer everything is okay too.
Should the Mac sharing the printer run the same system as the Macs printing to it? (pretty impossible in any company) or is this a persisting bug.
    Thanks for your help.

I solved this. At least for me. After spending an hour on the phone with Epson, they said it was Apple's problem. After spending an hour on the phone with Apple, they said it was Epson's problem. Sound familiar? Anyway I searched around the net for answers and I've found something that has worked. I downloaded this program: Gutenprint Uninstaller from this site http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3 and ran it on both computers. That got rid of any old gimp or guten drivers. Then from the same site I downloaded this package of drivers Gutenprint 5.1.7 and installed it on both computers. On the Tiger computer I added my printer (Epson 1400) selecting the gutenprint driver as its driver. Now my Leopard can see the printer settings and I can choose the type of paper, print quality, etc. These are all found in the printer interface window under "printer features". Hope this works for you. I'm happy again.

  • I upgraded from leopard to lion and my epson printer will not work. I get a communication error

I upgraded from leopard to lion and my Epson printer will not work. I get a error message comunication error. What can Ido to fix this I bought a new USB cord and it did no good.

I suddenly had the same thing happen. I've had my new iMac for 3 months and at first my Epson Artisan 50 worked okay then yesterday I started getting the same error message other people on this support site have gotten. I tried ALL the advice given (deleating the Epson files from the library folder, etc. reinstalling older software) and nothing worked. With the newest iMac (and operating system) you cannot pick and choose which version of Epson software you want. You must use the 10.8 version or it simply will not open when you've downloaded it. Finally I found the comment above by den.thed and tried the OS X Mountain Lion: Reset the printing system suggested. As much as I hated to lose all my printing presets that took a lot of expiermentation to set up, I was desperate. I tried it and it worked. Now I just have to consult my old computer and try to recreate all my printing set ups.  So to others with Epson / Apple 10.8 issues this may help when everything else fails. Thanks den.thed for your advice.

  • Print to Imagewriter II from Intel MacBook Pro, Quicken, Leopard OS 10.5

What will it take to print to an Imagewriter II dot-matrix printer from a 2007 MacBook Pro 2.2 (OS 10.5.2, Quicken 2007)?
I'd like to still use my pin-fed checks.
I'm trying to move my accounting and check printing from an old, but still workable, Mac SE/30 system (OS 7, Quicken 7). Ain't those old machines great!!!!!
Will I need a Print Driver?
    How will I connect?
(I have lots of other older Macs around: Tangerine iMac, original PowerBook.
I have a LAN over a Belkin router.
Don't have a LocalTalk option card or a Farallon AppleTalk-over-Ethernet to Appletalk/LocalTalk converter, but maybe could get?)
    Thanks for your input!
    --PSMacintosh

    I'm a bit confused here.
Let's see if I understand correctly.
    Method One:
If I buy and install a USB-to-Serial Adapter and plug it into my MBP's USB port, then I can serial cable directly from the Imagewriter II to the MBP and print.
I have to load the drivers for the USB-to-Serial Adapter.
I have to load the foomatic and GPL Ghostwriter drivers to convert Quicken 2007's postscript print format to Imagewriter's format (appletalk? localtalk?).
I don't have to have an Appletalk/Localtalk card in the Imagewriter.
Method Two (install an Appletalk/Localtalk card in the Imagewriter, then connect somehow (via ethernet) to my network):
I tried to find the card on eBay, but couldn't find it with any search words that I used. What are the right words?
Do I understand correctly that I need:
a AppleTalk/LocalTalk option card that will install inside of the Imagewriter II?
will connect into a slot inside the Imagewriter II?
and will have an ethernet port on it?
Then I'll need to connect an ethernet cable from the card port to either my computer directly (disconnect its ethernet network cable and use its ethernet port) or connect to the network router via ethernet?
(I do have a 34 Express Card slot on the MBP, so maybe I could buy an Express Card that has an ethernet port and connect to the MBP, rather than the network router?)
    ALTERNATIVE-- Method Three:
I do have an Original Powerbook (Family: M3553), running OS 9 and not having Quicken 2007 Mac, which has a Serial Port on it (I'm pretty sure that its printer port interface is serial) and is connected by ethernet to the network router.
So, if I serial cable from the Imagewriter to the Powerbook, turn on the PowerBook to connect to the network, then could I print to the Imagewriter from my MBPro?
I'd have to "see" the printer on my MBP. Or I'd have to drop the print file into the PowerBook's Drop Box and then print it from the PB.
But there's still a problem here because the GPL Ghostwriter from your reference only runs on OS 10s, and not OS 9s.
But maybe that's not a problem because I don't have to install it on the PowerBook with OS 9, but rather on the MBP.
So, if I install the foomatic and GPL Ghostwriter on the MBP, then it converts the print file (from postscript to appletalk??), then I send the print file to the PowerBook and then to the Imagewriter, I guess that should work?

  • Printer setup when print program is called through a BAPI from a VB program

    Hi All!
I have a BAPI being called by a VB program. The BAPI prints successfully when executed using the SAP GUI but fails to print when called via the VB program.
Is there any special printer setup needed for this?
    Thanks!

Excellent Search Server seems to be a virus; it may be that searchpredict is one, as well.
You should run anti-malware programs such as BitDefender and Spybot SD, along with fully scanning your computer, in order to eradicate the issue.
Otherwise, simply uninstall and reinstall Firefox. You can save your bookmarks and import them once it is reinstalled. Simply research "how to save bookmarks in Firefox."

  • Printer Setup Utility in Leopard

Just to be clear, has Printer Setup Utility in Applications>Utilities been removed? I am installing new Epson drivers and Epson told me I have to go into Printer Setup Utility and click on "reset". I cannot find any of this functionality. Is Epson incorrect? (a distinct possibility)
    Thank you.

Well, it should look something like this:
And if you don't care for right clicking, you can also control (on your keyboard) click. Same thing. Or you could set up your mighty mouse so the respective buttons have different functions:

  • Print Center / Printer Setup Utility missing

My refurb iMac had its entire logic board replaced several weeks ago. Since then I have not been able to use my Epson Stylus Photo R280 printer. Turns out that somehow my utilities called Print Center and also Printer Setup Utility have disappeared from my computer. Because it is a holiday, I am unable to to contact Apple Care by phone. I tried to locate a place on my Leopard install disk where it lists zillions of single items which I could chose to install, but can not find it. I am hoping that someone in here can direct me where to look. My Brother HL 2140 is working fine. I'm stumped.
    Holly

Got a reply from Epson. Even though I originally told them the printer was hooked up to a wireless Airport Extreme Base Station, they seemed to ignore that fact. But, finally they came up with this excuse:
    Response (Stephan R) 08/21/2008 11:19 AM
The Epson Status Monitor requires constant bidirectional communication with the Host for it to function properly. The Airport Extreme only allows a one way communication, so when the Epson Status Monitor tries to update the Host with the proper ink levels you will receive a communication error.
So, I guess that you can't use the print utility from a wireless connection, I hooked the printer to one of my Macs and added the printer to the Utility there. The utility works there, but I have to reconnect the printer to the Airport Extreme and visa versa to make they whole thing functional. Oh, well.

  • Unable to print after upgrading to Snow Leopard (Dell 1320C) - Network

This recently started after upgrading to Snow Leopard.
The OSX drivers worked well with Leopard 10.5.xx but after upgrading to Snow Leopard, i keep getting "network host busy" or "could not connect to printer".
I've tried completly removing printer, reinstalling (IP based), drivers etc etc I even resetted the printing system (right clicking and reseting in the printers list).
This works fine with Leopard but it fails on Snow Leopard..

I had the same problem not being able to print to Dell 1320c after upgrading to Snow Leopard. Here is a work around for the Dell 1320c printer to work on Mac with Leopard 10.6.2
Do not use the printer driver from Dell. Delete the Printer Setup from your Mac.
Locate Mac Driver Suitable for 10.5 (Version 1.7) at http://www.fujixeroxprinters.com.au/en/support/Downloads.aspx?product=5452&categ ory=5726
Double click the icon to install after it downloads. It should create file DPC525AAPv17x5.dmg. When the install is finished you can delete the installer.
From the Apple menu open System Preferences and select Print & Fax.
Click the + to add a printer.
    Select IP Printer.
Select for the Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD
Type the IP address: 192.168.1.xxx or whatever your printer is assigned on your network. (If you don't know, go to your printer and hold down the Green button until the configuration sheet prints. You can see the IP address once printed.)
Name the printer "Dell Color Laser 1320c" or whatever you'd like to call it.
    For Print Using select: FX
Next select FX DocumPrint C525 A-AP v1.7 in the box below.
On the next screen you must select 250 Sheet Feeder as an option. Otherwise it will only be able to manual feed.
    Click Ok.
Go to Print something, File... Print... but don't click the Print button yet.
Under Pages: go to the Drop Down and select Fuji Xerox Features.
Find the Paper Source Drop Down and select Tray 1 (250 sheets),
then go up to Presets: Drop Down above and select Save As...
and under Preset Name, type Standard-1, leave This Printer Only and click OK.
Now you can click the Print button. This will set the Dell 1320c printer to print from the document tray and not try to manually feed all the time.
Anyway, that's the work around to use the Dell 1320c Color Laser printer under Mac OS Snow Leopard 10.6.x.
    Hope this helps!
    Good Luck
P.S. I guess eventually Dell might come out with an updated driver, but don't hold your breath...

  • Locating my printer setup utility

I dont seem to have a printer setup utility how do i get one to add my new printer to?
did it go the way of my virex when i loaded leopard? cause im getting this error msg to list the new printer in the setup utility and my search provides no printer setup utility. is there a way to get this as a download?

Yes ... here is a list of what I have done:
loaded the driver from supplied disk for printer lexmark x5470
followed directions of error msg and looked for the printer setup utility ... could not find
    called lexmark (2ce)
1st time said I needed to down load the driver from their web site, which I did ... no resolution
2nd time they said I needed aforementioned utility and for me to contact Mac
(Mac has no phone support available for me or live online support so here I am at the discussion
    boards)
reloaded Leopard ... still did not get a file called printer setup utility ... printer worked briefly and
then back to receiving error message. mainly from printing attempts from the web (only file I
could print from HD was a .tif file. all other .doc or .rtf would not print.)
opened disc utility and verified disc permissions ... some errors related to lexmark then repaired
tried moving the downloaded patch from lexmark around to applications and then to the lexmark
folder its self but nothing seemed to help
Is there not a Mac tech out there that could help?
