Printer setup utility not recognizing printer

I have a G5 powermac with os 10.3.9. I have a HP 5000n printer with an ethernet connection over a LAN. The printer was working fine however It stopped working today. I tried reinstalling the HP drivers but the printer does not come up in the printer setup utility list. So I deleted all old references and tried again but still not showing. As I remenber this original setup was really easy but I can't get it to work now? Any help greatly appreciated

Printer troubleshooting checklist:
1. Check that the printer operates by doing a self-test print using the buttons on the printer itself.
2. Check that the cable is fine. Perhaps swap the cable if another is available.
3. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility, found in Application/Utilities.
4. With Printer Setup Utility closed
Locate the com.apple.print.PrintCenter.plist
found in ~/Library/Preferences and trash it.
5. Switch off, disconnect and unplug the cable of the printer.
Locate the com.apple.print.HP5000n.plist or similar name
found in ~/Library/Preferences and trash it.
Reconnect the printer, switch on.
Open Printer Setup Utility, select add printer.

  • Printer setup utility not utilities folder OSX 10.7.5

Printer setup utility not in utilities folder.  OSX  10.7.5  upgraded from 10.5.2. I do not have a 10.7.5 upgrade disc. How do I find or reinstall print setup Utility?   Can I recover printer set utility using Time Machine? Thank you.

The Printer Setup Utility is part of the Print and Scan preference pane in System Preferences. When you open Print and Scan and select to add a printer by clicking the plus button, this opens the printer setup utility - although you don't see it named as such. The display just simply shows an Add Printer window with connection options of Default, Fax, IP and Windows.
I would guess that you are referring to some old documentation that is telling you to open Printer Setup Utility to add the printer. So this document just needs to be updated for newer versions of OS X.

  • Printer setup utility not allowing re-adding printer to list

I've bought a Brother MFC (Model 210 C), and haven't been able to finish the installation because my operating system's Printer Setup Utility is not showing the new printer...in fact no dialog box shows up at all when I tell it I want to "add" a printer. I'm using a USB cable. A further discovery: when I try reconnecting my old printer, it shows that one listed, but if I then hit "delete" and ask it to find it again, it doesn't show anything or go anywhere. Is the problem possibly that I had the USB cable connected too early in the Brother installation? (I did, unfortunately). What do I do to get the multi-function center recognized?

    Cornelius,
I've tried all that, reinstalled and re setup. Plus I ran a patch from Brother for this problem: when the Printer dialog doesn't run. I even went to the manufacturer, and the Brother tech said it had to be my operating system.
Uh-oh. I just went back on a whim and discovered the patch was for OS 10.4! That can't be good… I'm on 10.3.9. That probably explains the problem. I didn't mention the patch to the Brother tech, as I recall.
Guess I should go back to Brother. Thanks very much for your help!!

  • Can Not Add a Printer/Printer Setup Utility Not Working

    Hi!
When I go to my System Preferences, Printing, Set Up Printers..., nothing happens.  I thought this was how you added a printer, but no dialog box is opening.  Any ideas about what I am doing wrong or how to fix this problem?
         Thanks.

    Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all the feedback on my printer problem.
Here's what I know: Yes, the printer is plugged into the electrical outlet and the computer itself. The printer is an EPSON Stylus Photo R280 and EPSON claims it will operate on a Mac running 10.3.9 (which is what I have). Installation was going according to their instructions, including installing the drivers, and when I got to the part where it said to connect the USB cable, I did and apparently the computer recognized it as the installation then continued to the next step. The next step was a screen that said "Open the Printer List" and that's where I ran into trouble, as no printer list opened, no matter how many times I clicked on the button.
Taking Ali B's advice, I checked HD>Applicaitons>Utilities to find my Printer Setup Utility, and lo and behold, it's not there! I have no idea what happened to it, but I'm guessing this may be the cause of my problem(?). So how do I get it back? Reinstall all my original OS software?
Thanks again for all the help.

  • Printer Setup Utility not working and autostopping jobs for an HP

I have both an Epson Stylus R200 and an HP Photosmart 2570 series all-in-one. the epson prints fine, but the HP doesn't at all. it keeps stopping the jobs i send to the HP. The HP is also a scanner and i can do scans so i know its not a problem with the physical USB connection.
To attempt to fix this problem, i try to open the Printer Setup Utility. I've tried to open the utility 3 seperate ways. 1) from the menu item "utility" in th e HP printer dock item
    2) from "Utilities/PRinter Setup Utility
    3) from System Preferences "Printing/Faxing>setup printers"
still the utility appears to be running on my dock, and the menus on the top appear (Edit View Printers Windows Help) simply won't drop down and let me use the Utility.
is my Printer Setup Utility COrrupted? if so, where can i find a replacement download without reinstalling Panther?
i searched the apple downloads to no avail.
    restarting now.
    any help is appreciated. thanks

thanks for your repsonse greg, however this is not resolved.
ok, i know ive got the 10.3.9 update installed successfully. in fact, i decided to reinstall OS X completely and update from there. this took much time. i backed up all system files manually and erase and installed OS X. i am having multiple problems still as a result, such as dreamweaver m not booting, but that goes beyond the scope of this help thread.
but, i can finally open the Printer Setup Utility. i did not find my old R200 drivers so I reinstalled the R200 driver. I also ran the HP all-in-one software. now, whats left to do is add these two printers in the utility.
When i select from the add printer dialogue, "EPSON USB" it find the R200 driver, then i try to select "add" and it gives me this error: "An error occurred while trying to add the selected printers successful-ok-conflicting-attributes"
when attempting to add the HP all in one to the utility, it won't even find the HP driver. Before i re-installed the HP all-in-one software, it had found it but gave me the exact same error as above. also in the add new printer dialogue the menu item that should say "USB" is just blank, and when i select what should say "usb" anyway, it.
i deleted two files in the Library/Preferences/ folder that started with com.apple.print they appeared to be default configuration files. after rebooting the utility, the same problem persists.
any other suggestions? now i can't print at ALL.

  • 10.4.7 printer setup utility not working

I have an eMac with a USB connection to a HP officejet 5610xi AiO printer. Until about 2 weeks ago, (when I believe we updated to 10.4.7) all was well. After manually uninstalling the HP software, reinstalling from the downloads and the CD, I still can't add the printer. HP support thinks I may have a problem with printer setup utility. When I have downloaded their software, it gets stuck for over five minutes in the printer plug ins install before it finishes. When I try to run set up, it gets stuck on the fax set up page before it says it's finished. When I try to add the printer the printer browser finds the printer through the USB connection, but it won't let me add the printer.

I ran the repair hard drive. Seemed like it might have repaired things too fast. Only took a few seconds. Tried reinstalling a new 10.4.7 combo update just now and got an error message at about 80% complete. Earlier I ran the quick and extended hardware test and found no problems.
I can't find my backup drive, the computer lists my firewire connection as "unknown device."
Instead of having selection/dialog boxes highlighted in blue, sometimes there is a thick black box instead.
Last night, about five applications including safari and finder stopped responding. I couldn't force a quit either.
This morning applications like quicken, palm, iTunes, and appleworks won't open because of a "shared library" error message.
Should I just give up and take everything to the shop?
    Thanks,
    Terri

  • Portege R600-10Q Finger Print Utility not recognizing prints

I have a Portg R600-10Q laptop which has been upgraded to run Windows 7 Professional (32bit) using the Toshiba supplied upgrade disks.
Recently the finger print scan became unreliable so I followed my usual practice and removed the old finger prints and set about rescanning my fingers.
I find that there are three scans required for each finger. When I scan the first two times the print is immediately recognised and graded 'Good'. However, the third attempt always fails and will scan up to 8 times and then the process is terminated. This happens regardless of which finger is involved, restarting the machine, running the utility as an administrator etc.
I uninstalled the Fingerprint Utility and then reinstalled but the same issue remains.
I'd value any suggestions for getting the Fingerprint Utility working again.
    Andrew

    > I uninstalled the Fingerprint Utility and then reinstalled but the same issue remains.
Did you use the newest finger print software?
    Please do this.
Please try the fingerprint software released for Portege R700.
There is new version which is released for Win 7 32bit and 64bit OS
PS; you should delete all fingerprints before installing new version...
    Bye

  • Printer setup utility- driver not appearing in list

Hi - I have installed a Canon printer driver (latest version as I checked), restarted my new MacBook (with updated OSX) but the driver does not appear in the list when i try to set printer up. Printer is connected to USB. It is a Canon Pixus iP7500. Latest driver is 4.1.9 - I checked.
I think my question is - how do i get the driver to appear in the Utility's list?
    Thanks.

For the Canon PIXMA drivers (or PIXUS in Japan), the Print Using menu is meant to automatically change to Canon IJ Printer when it detects the USB connected printer. If it doesn't change, you cannot manually browse to it like you can for other drivers.
Often the cause of the correct driver not being selected is that the software hasn't installed correctly. Following is some steps that I have used myself and offered to others that has resolved this problem.
    1. Open Printer Setup Utility, click on Printer Setup Utility and select Reset Printing System.
    2. Close the Printer Setup Utility.
    3. Go to Library > Printers > Canon and delete the contents of the BJPrinters folder.
    4. Go to Library > Receipts and delete the file Canon iPxxxx xxx.pkg
    5. Empty the Trash
    6. Restart the Mac
    7. Install the latest version of the Canon driver (which you have).
    8. Once the driver installation is complete, go to Applications > Utilities and open Disk Utility. Run the Repair Disk Permissions option.
    9. Open Printer Setup Utility. If the printer is not already displayed, click Add.
    10. Select the Default Browser view and select the Canon printer connected via the USB port. The Print Using menu should automatically change to Canon IJ Printer.
    11. Click Add to add the printer.
If the Canon IJ Printer doesn't appear automatically then please reply.

  • Yet another freaky printing problem: 10.3.8 and Printer Setup Utility

I'm hoping some really smart people can help me out here -- I'm not as good at Mac troubleshooting as I need to be!
I purchased Tiger a few weeks ago and the upgrade went fine and I was able to print, but then suddenly I can't any more. I have a PowerBook G4, running 10.3.8 and a HP 2710xi, which is a wireless printer (not sure of the proper term for this).
The symptoms: iCal crashes when I hit cmd-P. Other programs also crash upon printing. Some programs will bring up the print dialog, but it freezes up at that point. I tried printing to a PDF in Microsoft Word, and that crashed it. This problem persists in other user accounts.
Additional problem: Printer Setup Utility crashes whenever I hit the "add" button to add a printer. I have the crash reporter information if anyone wants it. Can't add any printer at this point.
What I've tried: I uninstalled the old software from HP and reinstalled new software. The HP installer can't finish running since it gets hung up by the Printer Setup Utility. I installed print-only drivers from HP. Same problem. I tried plugging the printer in to the USB to see if that makes a difference. Same problem.
Printer Setup Utility is recognizing my printer in all forms: as USB, Bonjour, and HP IP Printing. I just can't add it due to the program crashing.
Further troubleshooting: I ran all the maintenance and permissions repairs in Onyx. I used most of the diagnostic and repair tools in Printer Setup Repair, including Reset the printing system and deleting printer preferences. I reinstalled the 10.3.8 update from Apple's website.
I'm not sure what my next step should be: Do I reinstall the whole operating system? From my review of this board, lots of other people are having problems with Printer Setup Utility in Tiger.
Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   HP Photosmart 2710xi

Have you tried starting up with the Install DVD, and then using Disk Utility (in the menus at the top, NOT in the installer) to repair the hard drive?
If you're going to show us any errors, use the Console to look at cups error log. Paste any line that starts with E, plus the 3 lines before it (they tell you what was happening).
If none of this is fruitful, yes, reinstalling is the next step.

  • Epson 4800 Ethernet IPP Network Cant Add PRINTER SETUP UTILITY

    Greetings!
    Any known issues?
    Does anyone have this working??
I am having a time TRYING to ADD a new Epson 4800 printer, Epson Ethernet card onto new Mactel laptop and new quad G5 (both 10.4.7).
Epson NetConfig Utility sees the printer and set an IPP address.
However, Apple PRINTER SETUP UTILITY Add IP printer isn't working.
I had qualified Epson support taking me through the steps...he said some issues with the Intel books, but that doesn't explain why the G5 isn't working.
Three hours yesterday and I'm back on it later today...any tips/info appreciated.

    Hi all,
I recently bought an Epson Stylus DX4850 and I'll be damed if I get the thing installed on my Intel based Mac! This is driving me mad, I've been told that it is compatable. I've downloaded all the drivers from the Epson website but when I go to add the printer it's not listed. Does this mean that I need to use a different driver or gimp driver?
Any help would be greatly appreciated and would prevent me from going insane!
    Many thanks, Jon

  • Printer Setup Utilty not allowing HP 6280 setup

Currently the HP Photosmart 6280 cannot be setup using the Printer Setup Utility with Mac OS 10.4.X. The error message is: server-error-service-unavailable. The printer is networked through ethernet on a 500GB Time Capsule (software up to date for Time Capsule). The Printer Setup Utility "sees" the printer, it just cannot be added. The printer is viewable and accessible via all the HP software that comes with the printer.
Does Time Capsule not work with an ethernet connected printer? That would be insane since HP recommends using ethernet to make full use of the multi-function printer (scan, monitor supplies, etc.).
I've used the Printer Setup Repair Utility to fix things as well.
    Any ideas???

In attempting to install the latest version of CUPS, the install failed. On attempting to restart the Mac, it would not restart.
So, I reinstalled OS 10.4, did all the updates and now things are fine. It turns out the OS was increasingly unstable.

  • Locating my printer setup utility

I dont seem to have a printer setup utility how do i get one to add my new printer to?
did it go the way of my virex when i loaded leopard? cause im getting this error msg to list the new printer in the setup utility and my search provides no printer setup utility. is there a way to get this as a download?

Yes ... here is a list of what I have done:
loaded the driver from supplied disk for printer lexmark x5470
followed directions of error msg and looked for the printer setup utility ... could not find
    called lexmark (2ce)
1st time said I needed to down load the driver from their web site, which I did ... no resolution
2nd time they said I needed aforementioned utility and for me to contact Mac
(Mac has no phone support available for me or live online support so here I am at the discussion
    boards)
reloaded Leopard ... still did not get a file called printer setup utility ... printer worked briefly and
then back to receiving error message. mainly from printing attempts from the web (only file I
could print from HD was a .tif file. all other .doc or .rtf would not print.)
opened disc utility and verified disc permissions ... some errors related to lexmark then repaired
tried moving the downloaded patch from lexmark around to applications and then to the lexmark
folder its self but nothing seemed to help
Is there not a Mac tech out there that could help?

  • Printer Setup Utility/Print Center Missing

Occasionally my Epson 2200 loses its settings and I get an error message through the Epson software telling me the ink set is different from the one in the printer when it was installed (it's not) and that I need to open the Printer Setup Utility, uninstall the printer and reinstall it. Usually if I delete the job and resend it, the printer works, but tonight after repeated tries the error persisted. So I went to reinstall the printer and there's no Printer Setup Utility or Print Center Utility.
    Huh? Where would it go?
Do I just have to reinstall OSX or is there a quicker fix?
    I'm using OS X 10.5.8 on a 2.8 GHz Quad Core machine.
    Thanks in advance,
    JP

I believe that the "Printer Setup Utility" disappeared with Mac OS X 10.5. Since then all printer setup is done in the "Print & Fax" panel of System Preferences.

  • Printer setup utility crashes

I am running 10.4.8 on my iMac G5. Up until a few days ago I was successfully using two network printers that I have in my home. One is HP Photosmart 3310. Suddenly it stopped working, and I uninstalled and reinstalled and updated the software and drivers countless times. I kept getting a "printer not supported" message. Now when I try to install ANY printer I get the following message midway through the process in printer setup utility:
The application printer setup utility quit unexpectedly.
Mac OS X and other applications are not affected
Click reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.
    Can somebody help me please??

I think you left out some details-
The Photosmart 3310 is a USB printer, so to make it a network printer you are sharing it? From a Mac?
Here are some generic troubleshooting steps to try:
    Repair permissions (Disk Utility).
Delete Print Prefs - search for (File>Find) files that start with com.apple.print and delete them all and reboot.
Reset Printing System (new in Tiger) - In Printer Setup, click this menu item found just above Quit Printer Setup.
If there is a downloadable Combination Updater from Apple, use it to re-Update OS X.
Try Printer Setup Repair from www.fixamac.net.
Use a Disk Utility like Disk Warrior to repair the HD, or start from the Install DVD to use Disk Utility to repair the hard drive.

  • Printer Setup Utility always crashes- and am getting weird printer behavior

Just installed 10.5 on a fresh internal drive- machine is G5 2X2- settings imported from a 10.4 installation on another drive. Printer is a Brother HL-5170DN
    If I try to print from any app, the app doesn't crash, as has been reported by others, but the printer behavior is strange. I added the printer from the Print and Fax control pane, which saw the printer and appeared to be happy. But when I try to print any test document, the printer starts printing an error message on every sheet in its tray, literally running through the whole stack and then complaining it's out of paper, even though the document to be printed was only one page. Have never seen anything like that. The error message printed on paper is: ERROR NAME; undefined COMMAND; y OPERAND STACK;
Cannot launch Printer Setup Utility- always crashes. Have tried reseting printer system and rebooting, but no luck. It seems to be complaining that a file called "_CPLPPDGetFileInfo" is missing. The error log when I try to launch Printer Setup Utility is:

Thanks for the helpful info. I had upgraded to Leopard using Archive & Install and had an alias to the Printer Setup Utility from Tiger, which I kept trying to use not realizing that this now pointed to the old version in the Previous Systems folder.
Now I've deleted the whole thing and will remember to use the System Preference panel to configure my printers.
