Printer sharing blocked by firewall

I have a new MacBook Pro and while it "sees" the Canon printer, i am unable to get the printer to be shown as online.  My System on my iMac shows Printer Sharing: Blocked by Firewall.  Is there a way to allow these two Macs to print wirelessly?  Thank you!  I'm running the current version of Yosemite on both.

Turn off the firewall. It serves no purpose on a private network behind a router.

  • Library Sharing blocked by firewall despite settings

Just updated to iTunes 10.5 on my "first Intel generation" iMac, which runs 10.5.8.
Library sharing worked previously (iTunes 10.4.something), but now my other Macs and iDevices can 'see' that the library is there to be shared, but cannot access any content. The appfirewall.log shows:
    Firewall[42]: Deny iTunes connecting from 10.0.1.5:55709 uid = 0 proto=6
whenever I try to access it from another machine/device.
Meanwhile, the Firewall settings in the Security pane of System Preferences show iTunes.app with "Allow incoming connections".
    I have tried:
    - adding and removing iTunes.app from the Firewall list of apps
    - restarting the system
    - turning off library sharing within iTunes and turning it back on, including re-naming the library
It continues to fail the same way every time.
Has anyone else encountered (and hopefully solved) this problem?

Yes I have been struggling with this for months.
I have concluded that the firewall is broken and simply needs to be avoided, turn it off, don't use it.  Adding iTunes to the allowed list should work but it doesn't.  Look at your logs, you'l see the many instances of the firewall blocking itues access even though you have specifically told the firewall to allow it.
Annoyances like this destroy the Apple myth: "It just works."
Scared of opperating without a firewall turned on?  Get Lil Snitch and use that instead.  The Apple Firewall doesn't work anyway, we've seen that as described above.  So how can you be sure it is blocking any nasties? You can't. Turn it off and your problem is solved.

  • DVD sharing blocked by firewall, even though firewall says 'allow'

Under the sharing prefs. window I can select DVD/CD sharing but the light is red and says its blocked by the firewall.
In the firewall window it says DVD/CD sharing is allowed, and the light is green.
    Is there another firewall somewhere?

I'm having this exact same issue. when I turn off my OSX firewall DVDsharing is "green". I just used the shared CD with my OSX firewall off, but I'll try again with the firewall on.

  • IMac vs printer sharing

    System Preferences Settings:
Firewall: "Allow only essential services" (recently changed from "allow all incoming connections")
"Printer Sharing" allowed in Firewall block below.
Print & Fax: Proper printer selected, Green button light "on", Printer in Idle and selected as "Default", "Share this printer": block check marked.
My IMac on and directly connected to printer via USB cable. (I have no problem printing.)
Problem: My wife in an adjacent room, using an Apple powerbook wirelessly connected to the printer, suddenly cannot print any document. If I reset my IMac Security Firewall settings to: "Allow all incoming connections," she is able to print, provided my IMac is powered up. My question is this:
Even though I had the firewall setting set to: "Allow only essential services," I never the less had "Printer Sharing" selected in the Firewall block below, why couldn't she print? Resetting the Firewall setting to: "Allow all incoming services" corrected the problem. Granted, it is "a problem solved, " but my curiosity is really "tweaked" as to what the difference is between the two settings, especially since "Printer Sharing" was specified in the Firewall block?? This is for all "geniuses." I would really appreciate an explanation as to why one setting wouldn't work and the other one worked fine!

  • Firewall and Printer Sharing: Annoying Delays

    Howdy, all:
We are running Mac OS X Server v10.6.2 on a Mac mini server with no out-of-the-ordinary settings. We're using it as a file, print and chat server in our small office. Here are the basics of the network configuration:
    - Ethernet connected with a public, static IP address (manually assigned)
    - Airport connected with a private 192.168 address (reserved DHCP address from the Airport Extreme)
We have two printers we're sharing with the Mac mini, both of which are directly connected to the server via USB.
Here's the issue: the printers work beautifully in all cases, for all users, whenever Firewall is stopped. However, when Firewall is started, client computers say "Connecting to printer..." for about a minute before they spool the job. (They do, in fact, successfully connect and spool, as expected, but the one minute delay [or so] is for each print job -- so if you send three things to the printer, you're waiting one minute between each job.)
I have done everything I can to figure out how to make this stop. Even when "Any" IP is given "Allow all traffic," and all rules in the "Advanced" pane are turned off, you still get this annoying pause. Only when the Firewall service is fully stopped do things behave exactly as expected.
We are using only IPP, and the printers are broadcasting over Bonjour exactly as expected. Furthermore, port 631 (and any other ports I could find documented as related to IPP) are also open on all network interfaces. But as I said, even when I have the Firewall service configured to allow all traffic on all ports, so long as it is enabled, you get this very annoying pause before the client can connect.
Totally at a loss. What information can I provide to get some definitive assistance in resolving this issue?
    Thanks! Signed,
    Waiting for my PrintJob

It's acting correctly - just 'different' than what previous versions did.
The three options listed are kind of in a goofy order because we mentally expect it to go wide open to totally shut or some sort of progressive range.
    Instead, it goes from:
    - Allow everything
    - Allow nothing (except stuff the OS just HAS to have to work like a mac)
    - Allow my apps to actually work too
... So things get auto-added to that box as apps get started and you tell it if you want it to be able to get things from the network. When you selected printer sharing, it went into that box like with the rest of the apps so you didn't have to add it yourself.

  • How to make File-Sharing work with Firewall?

    Hello everybody,
I try to connect two laptops via FileSharing, running 10.5.5. Both have the following settings:
    - Sharing: File-Sharing (AFP) on
    - Firewall:
+ Only allow essential services (wording might differ, I translated it)
+ File-Sharing (AFP) appears in the text area below
I can see the other laptop in the Finder sidebar, but connecting fails, the firewall telling me that the connecting attempt was refused without giving any hint why. This is happens vice versa as well.
Allowing all incoming connections will solve the problem, but since it introduces other difficulties, this is not an option in my setting.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Jim

    Hi Jim,
I'm glad it worked for you as well. As for being asked to play gate keeper to allow incoming connections, I would note which applications request this. You can add the application to the application firewall list ( third option) by dragging it into the box.
There, you can choose either allow incoming or block incoming.
Perhaps by not having a particular application sitting in there causes you to be asked all the time.
You will have to decide what you want in there.
In that window there is file sharing and printer sharing placed in there, and I have added two items underneath, Safari and RealPlayer, both set to allow incoming. I had previously set them to block incoming, but saw no difference in their operation, so I think it is more important to have the application sitting in there, than the choice of allow or block.
Again it may be that this new Application Firewall, once introduced to these applications, may stop requesting your assistance, regarding the allow incoming query.
    regards roam

  • File and Printer Sharing

Running XpHomeSp2. Just purchased a WRT150N to replace a failing SMC wireless router. Was able to share files and printers before replacement, now cannot. Microsoft Windows Network recognizes Local network by name after long, slow delay, but does not list any computers or shared locations or devices there when access attempted from main computer, but, oddly, list is possible from another network computer, but only the shares it offers to the network are accessible.
Only difference between now and prior is the router and that WPA security is invoked. Access is not granted when security is disabled. Have found no support for this issue anywhere. Also now note that Xp no longer lists Simple File Sharing in Folder Options, not that I'd used it in original sharing setup.
Anyone experiencing similar issues able to offer resolution?

Your computer software firewall may be blocking the file and printer sharing. It was for me. You changed from a 'Trusted' network physical address to a new network physical address. Go into your software firewall 'Trust' settings and change the new address to 'Trusted'.
I had previously just disabled the firewall. Apparently that's not totally effective.
    Hope this helps.

  • Print Sharing Permission Issue???

I am setting up print sharing with a Lexmark X5400 series printer. Workss fine on the local machine and connectivity to the share seems fine as well. When I print from any other machine (in this case Win XP) there is no error but it does not print.
I have verified all firewall sharing settings. I found the following error in the console log?
kCGErrorRangeCheck : Window Server communications from outside of session allowed for root and console user only
Why would print sharing be restricte to root or console users? Is there a way around this?

  • Problem with file and printer sharing

I just installed a Linksys WRT54G to replace a D-Link wireless router and cannot reestablish my file and printer sharing since replacing the router.  I had file and printer sharing working fine before installing the WRT54G.   All of the computers are running either XP Pro or 2000 Pro.  I have two printers attached to one of my computers that I was previously sharing with all of the other computers on our home network.  One is attached via a parallel port, the other via a USB port.
Here's what I've tried so far without success.
    1.  The IP of the WRT54G is 192.168.1.1, and the IP's it assigns to my LAN computers begin 192.168.1.XXX.  The old IP of the D-Link was 192.168.0.1 and its LAN IPs were 192.168.0.XXX, so I've gone into my firewall and changed the settings for the range of trusted computers to correspond to the WRT54G's IP addresses.
    2.   I've tried uninstalling the printers and reinstalling them, including reinitializing printer sharing.
    3.  When I try to use the Windows  "Add printer" wizard to add a networked printer, it can see the computer that has the printers attached, but it does not see the printers.
    4.  I haven't fooled around with the file sharing settings, but they've all be lost too, so I suspect there is a common problem for both printer and file sharing.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.  I don't know what would be different about the WRT54G that would cause this problem.

Try this to Enable File and Printer Sharing...Turn Off the Router Firewall...Make sure the Windows Firewall is also Off...

  • Trying to set up printer sharing using WRT54G2

After reading the forum I have not been able to find a solution or very dated answers so sorry if this is already answered...
    ConfigurationL
     - Cable modem as internet access point
     - Cisco WRT54G2  (firmware 1.0.04) behind the cable modem to host my home network
     - devices attached:
        - Denon Stereo set (hardwired to WRT)
        - PC running vista SP2 (harwired to WRT)
        - Laptop running windows 7 (wireless)
     - Printer attached to the PC
    What is working
     - I can access my PC from my TV/Stereo in the living room for audio sharing
     - I can access the internet from all locations
     - Printer sharing on PC is setup correctly. I am able to print when replacing the WRT
    What is NOT working
     - Connection from my (wireless) laptop to my (wired) PC and v.v. This means no file sharing, no printer sharing no nothing.
    Some testing:
     - PC: ping to WRT works
     - PC: ping to laptop works on IP address and hostname
     - laptop: ping to WRT works
     - laptop: ping to my DENON (wired) stero set works
     - PC: ping to my DENON (wired) stero set works
     - laptop: ping to PC fails on IP address and hostname
Since this is basic network functionality I guess I have done something wrong but after looking at all the configuration itmes in the router, reading the forum I am not able to detect my problem.
    Rob.

The Workgroup in the wireless laptop and the wired computer should be same and file sharing should be enable on both the computer. The Security firewall should be set to "trust" the network.
Check this link if the computer is Window XP and Check this link if the computer is Window Vista.

  • File & Printer Sharing with  Windows Vista

    Hi All,
I work in a small office, I'm the only mac user & I supply my own Macbook 10.5.6.
We have just had a new Samsung printer installed in the office which all PC's have been enabled for printer sharing, but I cant seem to get my Mac to pick up the Shared printer. I'm also trying to set up a folder on the main PC that I can send files to from my mac. The shared folder has been created on Windows Vista - but I'm unable to see that shared folder in finder. Could these 2 issues be related? please can someone help me make my work days just a little bit easier
    Thanks so much

I would like to add that I DO NOT want to share my laptop at all. It is my personal computer & if I can set up file sharing from my mac to the main PC on vista while still blocking any access to my computer.
I am currently following this procedure - http://www.ifelix.net/tech/3022.html

  • Printer Sharing with XP Machine

I have Windows 7 RC, 64 bit loaded with an HP Deskjet 5150 Serises printer that I want to share with my XP machines. I've worked through all the other posts to get the file sharing working (same work groups, network discovery on, etc.) Now I went to the screen to turn sharing on for my printer which I did. Then I went to the additional drivers screen, clicked on the x86 box and pointed the search box directly to the proper folder on my HP driver disk. An error box comes up titled "Selected printer driver not found", with a message of "The specified location does not contain the driver HP Deskjet 5150 series for the requested processor architecture".  I double checked to be sure I pointed at the "/win2k_xp" folder on the driver disk. Then I downloaded the latest driver from HP but have the same result.

OK I have this figured out now. Turns out that Windows 7 requires the names of the printer in the .inf file to match exactly the name Win 7 has stored. Win 7 had my printer as HP Deskjet 5150 series and the .inf file had it as HP Deskjet 5100 series. I just went into the .inf file and changed all the instances to the correct name and got by that stumbling block.
As a further note, I was then stuck because the wizzard would not accept the XP ntprint.inf file. I found a solution for that as well. I copied the entire ntprint.inf_xxx directory out of a Vista OS into the directory where I had the printer driver stored and pointed to that directory. Everything then loaded and my printer sharing is now working.

  • Internet Sharing Blocking MSN

I have a mac mini on my desk which is connected to internet with an ethernet cable, and I also have iBook G4. I use the airport on the mac mini and set up internet sharing to get online with the iBook. I can surf on websites, such as I am writing this on my laptop, but I cannot access for instance MSN, and some other services from here, but I can get to them on the mac mini. Is internet sharing blocking access to other ports or what's going on?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Yes, I managed to connect if I turn of the firewall. There are no messages in console.log. Obviously the firewall is blocking everything but http traffic through the mac mini.

  • Windows 7 GPO Script - Enable file and printer sharing

    Hello,
I'm trying to activate the Advanced File and Network sharing bia script (as there is no GPO option to do this)
    The script is simple :
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="File and Printer Sharing" new enable=Yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="network discovery" new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall set currentprofile state on
in .bat and .ps1 it works fine when logged in to a computer with admin rights. I want to run this script on the computer level via GPO. The GPO applies properly, but the settings aren't changed. Any ideas on getting this to work?
    Environment is the following :
    DC is WinServ 2008 R2, test machines : Win 7 Pro x64
Test OU with Inheritance disabled, GPO for testing enforced with no other parameters apart from this Computer Startup script. User and Computer account are in the Test OU.
gpresult shows the GPO is applied, but no data is available under Computer or User configuration. the script is stored in the correct sysvol location.

  • File and printer sharing using Airport Express, usb HP Deskjet 3620 printer

I have a general question, and other forum users might have a good resolution for it - but if not, here's what i'm dealing with..
I have an Airport Express that I bought a couple of years back, it has all the necessary firmware upgrades, i'm running 2 Windows XP boxes going through a combination of Ethernet on 1 directly to the 2 Wire Home Portal 2701HG-B, and I also have an additional Netgear WGR614 v7. All firmware upgrades on all devices is installed and functioning after reset.. I've tried using a combination of the Windows XP built-in networking software, Apple Airport Utility, as well as Bonjour to get things configured and working right over the network. I've also installed the AT&T software, one is running the Mcafee security suite, and mine (the Etnernet box) is running the diagnostic utility.
I've tried defaulting all the firewall settings in either/or/all routers i've tried setting the Airport up with, and there still seems to be problems getting file and printer sharing to work right on all computers, and still remain safe behind the firewall. All the network hardware is set up with wpa2/psk authentication, and appears to be configured correctly.
The only version of the Apple Airport Utility that will run successfully on the systems, is the original version that came on the CD with the Airport. Both systems are completely up-to-date from Windows update, and are both running XP service pack 3.
I know for a fact, that the Airport is working just fine, as I've troubleshot all possible known hardware issues with it individually, hooked up to 1 pc (with current updates installed and running). Wireless works fine, i'm actually running the Airport utility on my main system in the living room, that's hooked up hardwired to the router. Both systems get online and surf without a problem going through either/or router as well. I've also tried dissabling the Windows firewall on both systems, and trying to set up file and printer sharing manually using the wizard, and that don't seem to resolve the issues either. However, both systems (wheather hooked up networked, OR individually), have both been experiencing some odd "quirks". The Ethernet box i'm on, has overwritten my primary HD, as "Athena" and made it unusable. The wireless box, has been giving simular "boot-up" related errors as well. I've checked the Cmos/DOS settings on both, and performed the suggested "boot-up" priority related tasks, and both systems are still experiencing problems. The Mcafee suite is up-to-date, and has caught several potentially dangrous programs running on the wireless box, hooked up to the Airport Express, INCLUDING the bundled HP diagnostic software.. However file and printer sharing still remains elusive...
Are there any suggestions about settings to check on the devices, or in the computers, to make sure it's all configured correctly?

...Also file/printer sharing just flat out over the network is NOT a problem, as it's been configured before over ethernet through my Netgear router and file/printer sharing worked just fine.
The main problem seems to be in the Airport Express' settings, it will "get configured" and then lock me out of the utility to where I can't get back in..
The main Airport password has not been changed, and the wireless network encryption is the same for all wireless devices running on the network.
The main problem, just seems to be with the Airport.
Even the Home Portal has detected the Netgear router (unless it having my Netgear router saved in it's settings might be causing a conflict)... Suggestions?
I've contacted AT&T Home Networking for help already about the Home Portal, unfortunately they can not help me with other network related issues, since i'm not using the 2 wire wireless adapters offered by AT&T...
