Printer Sharing from Inspiron w/ XP to Mac w/ Leopard attached to HP cp1700

Burning Question-
I have my Quicksilver with Leopard (see below) with my HP cp1700. My bf has a Inspiron Laptop with windows XP. How does one printer share to the Quicksilver? The router is a Linksys Wireless. I do have file sharing up and running. But I think the Inspiron is the Host. How do I make the QS the host and the Insprion the slave? I think that will solve the problem.

"host and slave" have no meaning in this context. The PC is the print server. The mac is the client and uses Windows Printing protocol (although LPD is available if you enable unix file-print services on the PC). Networking whether wireless or wired is industry standard TCP/IP.
On the mac, you need a print driver capable of using network protocols. Get hpijs (3 parts):

Because of Windows Printing issues in Leopard, you may need to use the Advanced Windows Printing via Samba method of setup. To learn about that, use Search Discussions (upper right on this web page) and search for Windows Printing Samba.

In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates.

Printer shared from my Mac is not seen from a PC using Bonjour for Windows

I am going nuts here, hope someone can help.
I have a Canon multi-function printer (MP830) attached via USB to a Mac G4 (with Mac OS X Tiger). At one time, I had it set so a Windows 2000 PC could print to it but deinstalled it after some printing issues, and have been unable to get to working again. The machines are connected together via a Netgear router. As far as I know, everything is the same as it was before, yet I cannot get it to work as it did.
- The printer works fine from the Mac.
- If I connect the printer to the PC, it works fine.
- On the PC, using Bonjour for Windows, I cannot see the printer attached to the Mac but I can see, and print to, an Epson printer that is attached to a different Mac.
- And from the second Mac, I am able to see -- but not successfully print to -- the Canon printer. The print job stays in the queue of the second Mac and says "Unable to connect to SAMBA host, will retry... Error: Connection failed with error."
- I have tried:
-- de-installing and re-installing Bonjour for Windows and the Canon print drivers on the PC
-- and have de-installed and re-installed the Canon drivers on the Mac
-- I have removed and re-added the Canon printer on the Mac. Printer Sharing is on, and this printer is checked in the Sharing box.
Any suggestions?

Looks like it's a network issue. I reach the step, "Adding a printer using the wizard":
You must enter the following URL, you must use the Queue Name you noted down earlier
http://<IP address of Mac>:631/printers/Queue Name
which I do, entering
http://192.168.0.4:631/printers/MP830
and I get the following error:
"Could not connect to the printer. You either entered a printer name that was incorrect or the specified printer is no longer connected to the server."
And then I am toast!
Using the other procedure, I simply don't see the Mac's printers in the Bonjour Wizard's "Browse for Bonjour Printers" window.
Not sure where to go from here -- any ideas?
The Mac's IP (set via DHCP) is 192.168.0.4, subnet mask 255.255.255.0. The PC is 192.168.0.5, I can't find the subnet mask.
Pretty sure it's a network config issue, especially isnce I can Bonjour to my other Mac.

Printer Sharing from a PC to Mac

I have a PC set up with a printer and would like to share it over Ethernet LAN to a PowerMac G4 and iBook G4, I've tried setting the PC side of things to share the printer but the Mac can't find it.
The PC is also sharing it's Internet connection over the LAN.

I don't think I've gotten Printer Sharing AND Internet Sharing to work together, but haven
t tried in a year or so...
Might go to Apple>Downloads and try Bonjour For Windows... pretty good at advertising services available... as well as opening the proper Ports for things.

Unable to setup Printer shared from Windows XP

Hi, I am running snow leopard 10.6.2 and am trying to setup a printer attached to a Windows XP. The sharing is all setup and I am able to print to it from another windows machine. But my Mac will not even see it.
Any tips or ideas?

Finding a printer shared from 10.3.9 on 10.5.6

i have seen the support page at _http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2275_ that suggests using cupsctl to configure the cupsd.conf to search for my printer being shared by my PPC-based mac running 10.3.9 on my other macs running 10.5.
unfortunately, upon trying that suggestion, i still have not been able to see the shared-printer from the 10.3.9 machines.
i have double-checked, and "*Printing & Faxing*" checkbox for "*Share my printers with other computers*" has been appropriately checked.
Just in case, i restarted both the 10.3.9 machine and the 10.5.6 machine. I discovered that cupsd.conf lost the settings from the original cupsctl command recommended in the KB article, so i re-issued it. But when i bring up the "*Add Printer*" window, i don't see the shared printer.
Is it possible there are steps missing from the KB article mentioned above? Steps that some need to perform but others do not?
Is there a way to make the changes of cupsctl permanent to the point that the cupsd.conf contains the shared-printers upon restart?
i see from article _http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9403762&#9403762_ that others have had similar problems.

I believe you are seeing an indication of something corrupted in your OS X software. Try Printer Setup Repair (or whatever it's called now?) from www.fixamac.net.
(If you haven't-) Also try editing /etc/cups/cupsd.conf. Use the Terminal and a text editor, or separate text editor like Text Wrangler. It's wise to create a copy (name it something like cupsd.conf.orig) before starting this.

Printing from 10.8 to a printer shared from 10.4.11

I have a G3 iMac running 10.4.11 that has an Epson WorkForce 1100 connected to it. My 10.8 machine can see the printer, I can install it but printing fails. I get "looking for printer" and "communication error." I think the problem might be driver related. The 10.4 machine lists it's printer driver as v.6.56, while the 10.8 machine has v.9.
I can't figure out how to get 10.8 to use the older driver. I can install the older driver, but when I try to add the printer, I can't select anything but the new driver. How can I force 10.8 to use the driver I downloaded from Epson (it's a .dmg file)?
I can unstall generic drivers on the 10.8 (generic post script I think) and they work, but not well. That test at least verivied that communication and sharing are working.

What is a raw Queue for? You want to share a non-postscript printer from an OS X Mac, but you want the regular driver to work on Windows (client) (instead of using a postscript driver on Windows).
1. Edit the files /etc/cups/mime.convs and /etc/cups/mime.types so that the line in each that starts with:
#application/octet-stream
has the beginning "#" removed (which means you have uncommented it).
I would use the freeware Text Wrangler and its menu item File>Open Hidden to edit these files.
2. Make sure the printer is on and connected by USB.
Go to Printer Setup Utility. Click Add, then note how the printer is identified next to the comm protocol, USB. In my case it is "Stylus Photo R200." Cancel and close Printer Setup.
Under the Apple menu, open About this Mac and click More Info to open System Profiler. Click on Hardware>USB. Under USB BUS, click on USB Printer. We will need two pieces of info from this, so keep it open in the background.
3. Open a web browser (Safari, Firefox, etc). Enter this URL, which is the local admin web server for CUPS on your computer:

Click Do Administration Tasks. When it asks for authentication enter either your regular admin user/password, or, root and root's password. (Different computers are set up differently for this) Read more:

4. Click Add Printer. Enter a helpful name, like R200_RAW (for my Epson R200). If you like, enter an "abbreviated" location and description. Click Continue. Select USB Printer, not the specific model. Continue. Now we need the info from System Profiler. Make the URI like this:

EPSON -- exactly as spelled (all-caps in my case) in System Profiler

5. Click Continue. Select Raw. Continue. Select Raw Queue (en). Continue. Done. Now try printing from the Windows (client) computer.

Print sharing from a sleeping server

Hi
I have a brand new Mac Pro computer loaded with hard drive space, ram memory, and a 30 inch Apple monitor and also a Mac Book 13 inch laptop. I have hooked the Mac Pro to the the Apple Airport Extreme base station (older g) LAN port and the WAN port to the DSL modem. The Mac Book connects to the network via its Airport card. I also have an HP all-in-one inkjet printer scanner copier fax connected via USB to the new Mac Pro, which I have set up to share the printer via this network. So far, so good. I can print to the shared HP printer from the MacBook as long as the Mac Pro does not go to sleep. If it does sleep, I have to wake it up and log into one of its accounts to get the printer service to work again.
Is there a way around this inconvenience other than disabling sleep and always leaving the Mac Pro logged in? It would seem to me like it ought to wake automatically whenever a print job (or a request for file sharing access) is received.
While we are here, is there a way to access the scanning functions or the flash memory cards on the HP from the Mac Book? If the answer to this last question is "no" it is not a major issue, but having to wake and log into the server just to print a file is quite a inconvenience.

I have the same problem but with my new iMac - have a Brother laser printer attached via the USB port which I am sharing (peer to peer). Printing works fine but when the iMac sleeps the printer is no longer recognized by other computers on the network. I just need to wake up the iMac by moving the mouse and the printer is again seen immediately by others on the network. The funny part is that I have set the iMac to not sleep at all (in Energy Saver - Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for: is set to Never and the box stating "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" is not checked. I do have the display going to sleep if the computer is inactive for a few minutes but this shouldn't prevent the printer from being seen by the network - should it??). It sounds like we are having the same problem.
Anybody out there have any ideas about what we can do to prevent this from happenning????
This did not happen on my G4 iMac - maybe I'll switch the printer back to that computer!

Can't install Solution Center on Windows 7 64 bit to PSC 5140 printer shared from XP computer.

I recenntly got a laptop with Windows 7 64 bit installed. I have a HP Photosmart C5140 All-in-One printer installed on a Windows XP desktop as a shared printer. I am able to print to the printer from my Windows 7 laptop without a problem. I want to install the HP Solution Center app so I can scan, etc from my laptop. When I try to install the Solution Center on the laptop, it starts the install process fine but then gets to the dialog where it wants to know how the printer is connected. The only options it provides is direct connected (USB) or network connected. I choose the network connected option. It asks for the IP address of the printer which isn't available since it is installed on the XP machine using USB. I have tried using the standard MIcrosoft fully qualified network name (can't remember the technical term right now) for the XP computer where the printer is installed (i.e. \\computer_name\printer_name) but it still won't allow me to continue with the Solution Center install. Possibly this type of install is not possible? I thought I did something similar a year or so ago with a Vista laptop I had.

More than likely, you are receiving the access denied error because there may not be a HomeGroup in place.
To handle networks securely with Windows 7, Microsoft took a different approach. A HomeGroup essentially creates a trust among all the devices in that home group. If a device is not in that homegroup, then that system will essentially be denied access.
Click on Install a printer on a home network to get basic steps to install a printer in a network environment.
Click on HomeGroup: recommended links to get more information about Home Groups, including setting one up.

Internet sharing from windows 8 to a mac

Iam using OS X mavericks but my hard drive has crashed and now i have to install the OS X on my external hardrive through a wifi connection. I have internet connection available in a windows 8 PC. But Iam not able to share the internet through wifi on my mac. Could anyone please suggest something?

Strange Print Sharing Issue from Leopard 10.5.1 to XP machine

Hi,
I'm experiencing an issue with sending a print job from an XP-based PC to a Leopard-based PC which has a printer attached to it (Xerox Printer).
The software that's used as a print server is efi Splash Server which routes a non-standard IP address to the printer (169.x.x.x)
I am able to send print jobs from the print server itself correctly.
I am not able to send print jobs from an xp based PC which is connected to the print server by the LPR port.
I've sniffed the network traffic and the job seems like its travelling through port 9100 and makes it to the print server but then it loses itself from there.
I can see the printer statistics from the Windows-based PC but I can't seem to successfully print to it.
We have standard user accounts setup for running the efi Splash Server software so I've ensured that the CUPS config file has been modified to allow standard users to use (a) the lpd service and (b) provided with read/write access to the Splash Server folder for everyone to ease future maintenance.
I'll (a) double-check the firewall and (b) install separate drivers and then try connect that way but do you have any other suggestions I could try so I can resolve this issue?
If I'm communicating across port 9100 as a standard LPR port then do I need SAMBA or Bonjour switched on?

Can you explain your network to us again? What's connected where? Is the Splash server a black box type device or just software on the Mac?
A 169.x.x.x address usually means self-assigned (IE, the router didn't respond to an address request). A different subnet address usually won't work, because routers look outside the local net (IE, the internet) when trying to connect to that IP address.
Or, you can just wait until someone here with Splash Server experience comes by.

Problem with HP Printer Sharing?

I have an HP laserjet 1022 printer that has always worked shared. It's connected to my iMac via usb, and I have always been able to print to it with printer sharing. A few weeks ago however, the print sharing with my macmini and macbook wasn't working. Usually I delete and then readd the printer, but it didn't work this time. Also, now it recognizes the printer, but its trying to use the wrong ?driver? It's trying to use Generic PostScript instead of the normal 1022 it used to use. After my macbook was stolen, I tried to set the printer sharing up with my new macbook pro. That didn't work either. I called HP, but they said there was nothing they could do because it isn't a network printer, it's just printer sharing, and therefore a mac thing. What do I do?

Hi there, I just wanted to let you know what has happened with my printer since.
I called hp, and they said that because the printer didn't have some sort of extended care plan, that they would charge me $45 or I could call Apple. They said specifically that it was Apple's problem (yeah right).
Talked to the most friendly techies ever, and they spent hours on the phone with me trying a bunch of different ideas. Apparently, from what we can figure out, hp simply stopped updating the drivers. When I did try to download the 1022 driver from the website again, it downloads, says its installing, but never actually functions and just disappears. So after everything, even trying the original install cd, we determined that we just can't get it to work.
One interesting thing though:
The printer is plugged into my imac, and I was trying to print to it (using printer sharing) from my macmini, macbook, or macbook pro. None worked.
But, if I plugged in the printer to any other one of those computers via usb and tried to print wirelessly from the imac, it worked perfectly!

Printer Sharing and Windows Sharing with Windows Vista

Today I tired setting up a printer sharing network over my linksys wireless router. I turned the printer sharing on and the windows sharing on my mac. Then I launched my notebook with vista on it and installed Bonjour for Windows 1.0.3. Once the installation finished I ran the wizard and installed the shared Epson Stylus Photo 1280 printer.
Once I finished the wizard I gave the printer a go.
I tried printing a word document on my Vista machine using the new wireless set up and nothing happens the printer queue gains the document spools it and then it's gone. Then, I tried using Vistas Sharing set up. After setting up another printer icon (the same printer). When I go to print I get an error message.
Also when I try accessing my shared folder from my vista machine. I use my Username and password for the login. The computer responds that my Mac Mini's username and password is incorrect. Thus, I cannot fileshare between by Mac Mini and my Vista Laptop
What can I do to get my printer sharing and my windows sharing set up to work.
(also, my Epson Stylus Photo 1280 Printer is hooked up to my mac mini through USB).

Oh. make sure Printer Sharing IS NOT set on the Mac, if it is turn it off & reboot.

AE print problem from wireless PC

I am using AE with a PC desktop conected via ethernet, a macbook and pc laptop connected wirelessly. All print to the canon pixima MP780 fine except the wireless PC. It will print documents, but when I try to print a web page, I get pages of codes. The laptop prints fine when connected directly to the printer so it is definately something with bonjour.

File and Print Sharing over wireless

I have the following hardware:
MBP - Brand spanking new kickin' machine running 10.4.x
G4-400 - old but still doing nicely running 10.3.9
PC running XP
MBP has the extreme card built in
G4-400 has a third party wireless card that's been working for 2 years
PC has a netgear wireless card
Router is a netgear WR814v2 wireless B
Facts: Before I bought the MBP last week, I could access files between my G4 and PC fine over my network and access the web at the same time. When I connected the MBP to the network, I could surf. When i tried to turn on filesharing, it works for a short time, but then knocks the network offline. The model still shows a connection and my router still broadcasts and the wireless cards all get the signal, but nothing connects.
To troubleshoot the issues, this is what I've done so far:
When it went down, the first thing I did was turn file and print sharing off on both of the macs, restarted and tried the connection. Again, model still shows logged in, but no connection. Then i plugged the PC into the ethernet port on the router to get a wired line. Still no connection on the PC. Next, I shut down the macs, disabled the wireless on the PC and restarted the PC. Still no connection through the ethernet port even though the model and router still show all signs good. Also, through all this, I couldn't log into the router's IP address once I was wired to it. Next I shut down the router and modem, waited, then turned on the modem, waited for it to cycle to ready, then turned on the router. The modem showed that it was connected, then the router showed wireless broadcasting. Then I had my connection to the web back.
I then went back to square one and tried file sharing again and again everything locked up. It seems like some how the file sharing between the macs is confusing the router. I tried fixing the ip address that the router assigns to each machine, but that didn't solve the problem. I'm at my knowledge's end. What am I doing wrong here? My goal is to share files at least between the macs and print through the G4 which has a USB and a Firewire printer attached. I'd like to accomplish the filesharing while still being able to access the web. But for some reason, I can the file sharing up and running for a short time, but then everything falls apart and locks up.

I figured out the networking mess - the secret, don't follow the instructions on the apple site - listen only to everyone in this discussion. I kept following the instructions to turn on appletalk and that's what was tying everything up. When I just use the sharing preference panel without going into the network preference panel, all is good in the world. I can now view all three computers with their shared folders(enhanced by sharepoint for a couple of external drives) and also print from all machines to the printers hooked up to the G4.
