Printer sharing with Windows 7 64 bit

I am trying to install an HP laserjet 1320 printer connected to a Windows XP Pro 32 bit machine.  Windows 7 goes out and tries to find the approriate drivers but reports that a suiable driver could not be found.  The printer installs fine when connected to the Windows 7 machine via USB port.  Downloaded and unzipeed the Universal print driver HP's site says is the correct driver - no luck.  Tried installing using the share name - same error message.

I found that I had issues with getting all of these to work - individually.  I have an XPPro (32) pc trying to print to Win7Ultimate printer - printer is shared with all settings wide open, works great with another 7 or Vista machine, but same errors
as above for XP.  I got it to work an old way, and then the "local port" way worked.  I don't really know why as yet, but I am investigating.
My Solution -
1. As stated in other posts, install the printer locally on the XP machine.  Make sure that it prints.
2. Connect the printer to the 7 machine, print a test, then change the file and print sharing options to "yes".  I also installed the "Universal Driver" for my printer - HP1200 Laserjet.
3. Make sure that the Network type that the 7 machine sees is "Work" or "Home", not "Public". -  I don't know if this really  did anything or not, but I did make the change - mine thought the network was "Public".
4. Go back to the XP machine, if you get errors when you add the "Local Port" as suggested, then do this -
Warning Old Dos Trick -
     -  Open a Command Prompt, then type (without quotes) "net use Lpt1 \\COMPUTERNAME\PRINTERSHARE " - where "computername" is the name of the computer and sharename is the shared name of the printer
on that computer.
    - you SHOULD see "command completed successfully", if not check to make sure that you have rights on the 7 machine.  Now you should be able to print a test page to the printer. CAUTION - it took awhile for the changes to
take, so you may have the hourglass looking at you for a few minutes. - Once you reboot this will not work as the connection is just for that session.
To explain: this command is the dos version of what happens when you re-route output to a different destination - thus any traffic to LPT1 goes to \\computername\sharename.
5. After this worked, I then could add the "local port", as detailed earlier and had no errors.
Hope this helps someone else!

  • File & Printer Sharing with  Windows Vista

    Hi All,
I work in a small office, I'm the only mac user & I supply my own Macbook 10.5.6.
We have just had a new Samsung printer installed in the office which all PC's have been enabled for printer sharing, but I cant seem to get my Mac to pick up the Shared printer. I'm also trying to set up a folder on the main PC that I can send files to from my mac. The shared folder has been created on Windows Vista - but I'm unable to see that shared folder in finder. Could these 2 issues be related? please can someone help me make my work days just a little bit easier
    Thanks so much

I would like to add that I DO NOT want to share my laptop at all. It is my personal computer & if I can set up file sharing from my mac to the main PC on vista while still blocking any access to my computer.

    hello can anyone help me?
i have a new HP pc with windows 7 OS, and have an epson PX710W 3in1 printer.

the pc will print documents ok via wireless link, but when i power up the laptop it appears to inhibit the printing function (document will not print).
i have set up file/ print sharing but there is the problem. it appears to me that sharing is only possible between pc,s etc with windows 7 OS via the homegroup set up. Has  anyone encountered this problem at all, has anyone any ideas? or is it a configuration problem that i'm not aware of?

  • Printer sharing with windows

I'm having some issues with sharing a printer through my mac mini. When I first tried, it was as easy as checking the little "Share printer" box in the system prefs. All of a sudden though things just decided to stop working. I couldn't even print on the mac itself.
I've now got back to the point where I can print fine on the mac, and I've got file sharing going with samba too. But when I try to print from notepad on my windows XP box I just get the error message "A StartDocPrinter call was not issued." If I try to print with vim I get no response at all, just nothing happens.
Something also struck me as a bit odd, and that is that now in my printers list on the mac I have "i560" (my normal printer), but then two others both named "i560-1". I also get another printer to choose from on the windows machines in the print dialogue called "Auto i560 on MAC".
this is all on tiger 10.4.3.
any help much appreciated, would love to get this working finally. the mini is great for a server, so quiet!
    cheers.

thanks alot buddy. seems i just had to remove all the printers+settings and do it all over again. I wish that page had a better page rank, i was fishing through google for ages. definately a bookmark.
    cheers.

  • Printer Sharing with Windows Desktop

I wanted to share my HP Printer over the Wi-Fi network.
The printer is connected to my HP Pavilion Windows PC.
I added the network printer and when i print, it displays error message:
    "Connection Error: NTSTATUS_BAD_NETWORKNAME"
How can i fix this problem?
    Thanks!
P.S. I tried plugging the printer to my iBook directly via USB, and of course, it worked perfectly without installing any drivers. But it's nicer if i can print via network without pulling and plugging out cables everytime. Also, the iBook can "communicate" with my PC, as both can share files.

I've had a similar problem with my HP Printer, I don't get an error message printed but I do when I try to print- it just hangs. Again, when attached there are no probs and the iBook and desktop PC can communicate fine. I looked into it a bit more and found out that HP knew about the problem and were working on driver updates. It may be that this is the problem with your as well and until HP do something about it we're stuffed! Try going to the HP website and downloading the most upto date drivers for ur iBook and PC. It may help! Sorry to be the bringer of bad news!

  • Printer sharing with windows computers

I am the very happy owner of a new 17” MacBook Pro. Where has this machine been all of my life!
Unfortunately we all live in a windows world, so I have been trying to set up my MBP and my daughter’s iMac G5 on my home wireless network. I use a Linksys WRT54GX4 wireless router and have my Dell XPS 600 and two Dell dimension 9300 laptops on the system along with the macs. All the computers recognize each other. By that I mean that I can access the shared folders on each machine and transfer files (mac to PC, and PC to mac).
Here’s the problem: the printers on the system are connected to the XPS 600 and while the PC’s all recognize and can access the printers, the macs will not. Even though the workgroup shows up on the macs properly under network connections, neither mac will list the printers when I try to add them. During the Add Printer process on the macs, I can get to a screen that shows the workgroup name, and then the XPS 600 (where the printers are connected) but when I click on the XPS 600, no printers are listed. Why are the macs not seeing the printers? The printers in question are an HP DeskJet 990c (USB) and an HP LaserJet 4200 (parallel printer using a parallel to USB adapter – works very well directly).
I realize that diagnosing network problems is difficult, but any suggestions from the group will be greatly appreciated.

  • Mac print sharing with windows issue...

I set up a intel iMac to share its printer with a dell laptop. From what i can see in the printer's queue..all the jobs get sent from the laptop to the iMac; however, it doesn't print anything. It seems that windows is sending the print job and the iMac is receiving it but nothing is printing.
    what could be the solution?

I have a very similar problem....
I got a MAC PRO a couple of weeks ago and I have two USB printers (an EPSON CX 4200 and a CANON S900 connected to it).
I tried both Ifelix procedures to add the printers connected to the MAC and I had problems with both procedures.
If I try the http://mac-ip:631/printers/printer-name I am successful in adding the printer to the Laptop running windows XP however when I try to send something to that printer the job goes straight to the "completed" queue on the MAC.
I spent two hours with Apple support on the phone today and they could not figure out what was going on and suggested that I post my issue to this forum to see if anybody has any ideas.
I also tried to configure the printers using Bonjour (as per Ifelix method) but at some point during the printer setup I get an error message indicating that I do not have "sufficient access" to install the printer driver even though I am logged in as admin on the windows XP computer.
Has abybody experienced similar pain? Is anybody here being able to print to printers connected to a MAC PRO from a Windows XP laptop?
I should also say that my computers are in a network and both are connected to a Linksys Wireless Access point/router.
The Laptop is a wireless laptop and the mac pro is conneced to the linksys router via a regular network cable.
Also, I have no issues printing straight from the mac to both printers.
    Would appreciate any suggestions/comments.
Thanks in advance for your time.
    regards,
    marcelo

HP Smart Web Printing has been replaced with HP Smart Printing.  It does support Windows 7 and IE 6 to IE9.  See this page for information.

  • Windows/Boot Camp printer sharing with OS X

I have three Macs on a wireless network - 2 MacBooks and a MacMini. The MacMini and one of the Macbooks runs Win XP under Boot Camp. The MacMini has a USP printer attached.
I can print to this printer from both of the WinXP/BC machines and the OS X MacBook can 'see' the MacMini WinXP/BC environment and picks up the printer for setting up in printer preferences. However, the OS X MacBook cannot print to the printer. The printer is marked to be shared in the MacMini and is accessible from the WinXP/BC MacBook. The correct driver has been loaded into the printer panel on the OS X machine.
When the print command is given from the OS X machine, the printer panel shows: "Attempting to connect to host (MacMini) for printer. Connecting..." and then hangs on that.
This is a solid problem. Any ideas would be most welcomed.

  • File Sharing With Windows

Right this is annoying the **** out of me. I've enabled everything I should on my Mac to get it sharing with windows. I'm convinced I've broke my OSX, but there's clearly something I've missed which is stopping this from working that maybes someone else can see! So here we go
    Gone to system preferences, sharing
    -> Ticked file sharing
-> Ticked share files over SMB
    -> Ticked my user
-> Added what I want to share and gave permission to everyone as read/write for public folder.
-> Gone to network preferences and setup the WINS server to the same group as my windows PC
Just got the standard apple firewall running on my mac. I've tried disabling this and letting anything through.
The problem im having is my windows laptop cant see my mac quite often. Sometimes it can, and when it can see my mac it only displays shared printers rather than any of my shared folders. The problem here is that I dont have any printers on my mac, and printer sharing is not enabled.
Any idea why this isnt working? I've disabled windows firewall/any other firewall on my windows laptop. My windows laptop can happily access the FTP and HTTP on my Mac. Just has issues file sharing.
I actually had this working a while ago for a day, then it's never worked since. I cant for the **** of it figure out why. I've gone through loads of tutorials to see if i've missed things. Some things have even told me to change a registry file in windows, which I've done to no success.
    Cheers in advance!

  • File and Printer sharing on Windows 7 Through Group Policy

    Hi,
I was wondering how to enable File and Printer sharing on Windows 7 Through Group Policy. I have enabled the policy called: Allow inbound file and printer sharing exception.
But when I go to advanced sharing settings, it's still turned off.
Windows Server 2003 AD Domain, and I'm using the Group Policy Manager from my Windows 7 machine to edit the policy.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
Based on my knowledge, there is no Group Policy setting for enabling and disabling File and Printer sharing. To do this, you may need to write a script and you can go to our Scripting Forum for help.
In addition, I would like to share the following with you:
Enable or Disable File Sharing for a User or Group by Using Group Policy

    Hope this helps. Thanks.

I used Bonjour Print Services for a Windows 7 machine (http://support.apple.com/kb/dl999) to successfully connect to a Mac OX Server 10.6 print queue, and the following message is generated in the print log and CUPS log,
