Printer spreads in InDesign CS4 to PDF

I have created a 12-page booklet in InDesign CS4. My printer only has CS3 and says they can't open the InDesign file I sent them, even though I sent a .inx file (made from exporting the file as cs3). I sent them a press quality pdf and they said they cannot use that because it is not printer spreads.
Can I make a pdf of printer spreads? When I choose Print Booklet, I only get choices to print to my printer.

Whenever the words printer and do your own imposing are put together, my mind goes to full-service copy shops or digital printers.
I use "printers" like this all the time, and they basically use better printers than my office can afford and have a few other extras for folding and binding. It can be useful, but it isn't offset.
IF this is the type of printer you mean, imposing yourself isn't so unusual. They often aren't set up for that, or will charge extra.
I use print booklet to generate the PDF to whatever standard they need. (I sure miss InBooklet.)
Again, if it's a copy shop setup, a flattened PDF is the way to go, and perhaps even RGB (many copy shops don't have ripping software).

  • Printing issues from InDesign CS4 pdf file

    Good morning,
Could you help explain and possibly resolve an issue I'm having with an InDesign CS4 pdf file where the text and image drop shadows (40%) are printing as solid black blocked shapes from a large format printer. The file encompasses 1 overall image, 1 image with drop shadow, 3 text frames with drop shadow effect applied to the text and 1 group set of simple rectangular and ellipse objects with a glow.
My colleagues in graduate school experienced the same with their files and the output bureau's rasterized the pdf file in Photoshop where it printed out with good resolution. Shouldn't this be resolved first in InDesign rather than rasterizing the file?
I appreciate any help and insight you could offer myself and my colleagues.
    Thank you, Kathryn

The printing service uses Acrobat 8 Pro and HP large format printer. My InDesign CS4 document is in the color mode of RGB and color type as Process. I saved it as a pdf file using the standard settings as follows: Preset: High Quality Print, Standard: None and Compatibility: Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3). Are there options I should be paying more attention to when creating the PDF file? Also, I was reading up on Peter Spier's response links.
This brings me to the next question...I'm creating a photo book for grad school with approximately 40 pages of images (RGB, 300dpi) with feathered drop shadows. What would be the best settings to use when exporting as a pdf file for printing services?
    Thank you for your help.

  • PDF printing errors with InDesign CS4 docs

I've discovered somewhat belatedly that since upgrading from CS3 to CS4, every pdf I have created in InDesign (a dozen or more) won't print. After a general error message, "the document could not be printed," I get one or both of these messages: "there were no pages selected to print" or "a drawing error occurred." I have variously tried every page selection option to no avail. I have also tried recreating the pdfs from the original ID files with different export settings, again with no success. PDFs exported from other programs are not a problem, nor is printing from InDesign. I'm on a Mac. Any thoughts?

My (admittedly Clonescript) HP prints this without error messages but prints in Courier anything done in Optima ExtraBlack, which claims to be embedded, but seems not to be. My PCL printer prints this without errors or problems.
If I bring this back into CS4 and export back to PDF, it prints properly in Optima ExtraBlack.
If I edit it in Acrobat 7, I can change Optima Extrablack (not on system) to Optima Extrablack (on system) and it prints properly.
I would want to look into your Optima Extrablack font. First try substituting different fonts, something generic like Helvetica (not as a solution, just as a test). If that fixes it, try substituting something generic only for Optima Extrablack (the "A House of BRIC" head and the drop folio). If that fixes it, make a document that uses only Optima Extrablack. If that fails, look into uninstalling and reinstalling Optima Black.
BTW, you don't have Reader 8 and Acrobat Pro 9 installed on the same machine, do you? This is not recommended, although I don't know what particular problems it causes.
There's quite a bit about the drawing error if you google it. In particular, this might be relevant (while somewhat off-color): http://groups.google.com/group/adobe.acrobat.windows/msg/8dc9a7dfea59a57d?hl=en&

  • Poor printing quality in InDesign CS4

    Hello,
In InDesign CS4, I've made a single-page print (page coverd with one photo).
This photo is a high-resolution image (300 ppi) and is linked with the document. (checked with preflight).
The print is made on a Xerox Phaser 7760. The result isn't sharp at all. I've printes the same picture started in PhotoShop with a fine result and a print from an HiRes-pdf of the same page. The result was ok as well. The page and the picture weren't colormanaged. I kept the outputprofile, linked at the original file (US Web coated). The files were printedd on a heavy card stock (uncoated). Any idea what went wrong?

Could be a couple of things.
You say the image is 300 ppi. At what size? The number that counts is effective resolution, or the resolution at the scaled dimensions, the ones you use to print. You 'll find effective ppi listed in the info or links panels.
Second, the default sending for image data when printing from InDesign is "optimized supbsampling" which is usually not that good. Chnage to "all" and see if that helps.

  • Images shrink from Indesign CS4 to PDF

I design ads at a set size in a frame in Indesign CS4. I just noticed that when I print them to PDF (regardless of the PDF distiller settings), they shrink. I have the print dialog box settings at 100%. Printing to a physical printer does not have this problem. How can I get 100% to mean 100% when I print to PDF? It has nothing to do with my art. I could just have a box frame, and it would shrink that.

The original is 7.25 wide. The PDF is about 6.75 wide.(Height is proportional in both).
I am not printing FROM PDF. I am printing TO PDF. The magazine production rep was the first one to notice how off the PDF file was. At first, I had created the page size to be the size of the ad. That produced an even smaller PDF of the ad on letter paper than after I recreated the ad on a letter sized page to begin with. It is still off by about .5 inch though.
And if I do print from PDF, I am set to no scaling (not shrink or fit).

  • Indesign CS4 to PDF 1.3 transparency issue

We submitted an ad to the local newspaper that we created in Indesign CS4 and Acrobat 9. The ad was exported as a press-quality Acrobat 4 PDF.
It is a fairly simple layout, with type and a logo.
The headline and logo have a drop shadow applied with multiply blend mode. All colors are CMYK.
When the ad prints, the headline and logo have 1% black-filled boxes around them.
I know this is a transparency issue. However, we've done the same ad in Indesign CS3 and Acrobat 8 with no problems as long as we were CMYK and Acrobat 4.
Has something changed in CS4 that I don't know about? Could it be the multiply blend mode rather than normal?
Problem is, the newspaper can't give me a proof -- we have to wait and see what happens when they print. I can't simulate the problem on my end. The ad prints perfectly on my HP5000N in b/w and on my Phaser 8560 in color.
One workaround suggested was to export the file as a JPG or EPS and save as a Photoshop PDF. We did that on one ad that will run Monday, so we'll see. However, that makes the files with photos enormous -- like from 4 mb to 26 mb.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. We're in the middle of an ad campaign and we're resorted to the old-fashioned manual drop shadow out of desperation!

Has something changed in CS4 that I don't know about? Could it be the multiply blend mode rather than normal?
Something did change. In some cases (maybe all), the flattener in CS4 will put the shadow behind the background rather than in front. In both cases, though, using a RIP and/or viewer which is set to honor overprints will avoid the problem, and allow the artwork to render correctly.
You say that all colors are CMYK. Are you absolutely certain that the background (whatever the rectangular shadow-containing "boxes" knock out) is not a spot color? Your problem description would be more easily explicable if it were.
One workaround suggested was to export the file as a JPG or EPS and save as a Photoshop PDF. We did that on one ad that will run Monday, so we'll see. However, that makes the files with photos enormous -- like from 4 mb to 26 mb
This in itself suggests that these folks do not know what they are doing (though I know that's not terribly helpful to you if you need to advertise with them). I must say that given current economic realities in the newspaper business, it's hard to image a paper refusing to cooperate with a paying advertiser - especially one who has been previously bitten - if not by the newspaper's own incompetence, at least by their unwillingness/inability to provide a proof.

  • Printing/Font problem Indesign CS4

I am hoping someone can help me  figure out an issue I'm having with Adobe Indesign CS4 and printing.
A few weeks  ago I upgraded from CS3 to CS4. I had just sent a CS3 document to my  printer and it looks great. I decided to update all the files I was  working to CS4 (Indesign) since I knew I'd be working on them within the  next few months. I upgraded and printed out one of the files to my  xerox 6200 phaser and now parts of the document (a 4 page document)  prints out of my printer like it's missing the font. Not all of the  fonts change to a strange courier slanted italic font, just some of  them. I've tried just about everything and am driving myself crazy  trying to get it fixed. I can't attach a sample because it only does it  when printing. I have checked for errors in preflight and I have none.  The fonts I'm using are cronos mm and cronos mm italics. My operating  system is snow leopard 10.4.11.
    These are what I've tried:
    1. I printed  from the indesign 3 file before conversion and it prints fine.
    2.  Made a pdf of the indesign 4 file and no errors and looks great on  screen and prints from the printer and looks great.
    3. I've  printed out individual pages, one at a time, and when printing  individual pages no weird fonts, but when I send the job to printing the  whole document is when I get the weird fonts.
    4. Tried to save it  as an .indx file and print from it and it still has the same issue.
    5.  Exported the text and saved it as plain text from text edit and placed  it in a fresh file and reapplied the fonts and it still prints weird. I  only did 1 and a half pages of it to see if just bringing in clean text  and redoing it but it didn't work.
    6. I'm using Font Agent Pro  3.3.2 and I deleted the fonts from the system and reimported the fonts  from a backup file. Verified the fonts and found that some of the cronos  fonts (expert) couldn't be verified and deleted them, but those weren't  the ones that I was using.
    7. Cleaned the font cache using Tweak  Freak.
    8. Deleted the adobe plist preference thing
    9.  Deleted my printer, downloaded a new driver and font management thing  for my printer and reinstalled it
    10. Restarted numerous times and  reopened the file and printed and it's still printing weird.
    11.  Done a save as several times and gotten the same results.
    12. I've  opened other files that use the same fonts as this file and they've  printed fine after upgrading to cs 4.
    13. Printed from another  person's computer who has everything that I have on my system and his  system does the same thing.
    14. Spent countless hours looking  online and can't find a solution. I'm afraid if I do anymore I will  screw up my computer or indesign or fonts so I thought I'd email this  list to see if there's a solution. Any help would be appreciated.
    Rosie

    Peter,
Thanks so much! It worked! I changed it to subset and it printed perfect. I had tried everything else in that box, such as binary instead of ascii, level 2 instead of 3, but never changed from complete to subset. I really appreciate your help! And I do still have some hair left. I didn't pull it all out
As a side though, it's weird that in CS 3 with the same settings - complete - it would print fine, but when upgrading it changed it. I also exported it as a pdf to make sure it looked good on screen and printed out great. Thanks again. I appreciate your help. You are brilliant!

  • Missing € character when exporting from Indesign (CS4) to PDF

I think the subject line says it all. I'm not an expert user, but have not previously had
this problem. I get a new iMac with CS4 reinstalled
and now 'lose' the Euro character when I export my Indesign files to
PDF - does anyone have any advice please? Thanks.

Even so - I don't know why - but the problem is with some fonts that the Euro doesn't show.
I always use the Euro font for the Euro symbol and never have an issue.
Even if you do manage to get the Helvetica Euro to show up in the PDF there is a chance it can drop out at the RIP stage and not appear in print - I've seen it happen far too many times.
    Euro font is your friend.

  • InDesign CS4 to PDF - Missing characters

I created a brochure (2-sided with lots of copy) using InDesign CS4; I exported it to PDF [Compatibility: Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4)].
When opened in Acrobat 9 Professional on my computer, the file contents were perfect. The file was sent as an email attachment to prepress. When the printer opened it using Acrobat 7.0 Professional (don't know if it was on PC or Mac; they have both), there were missing characters.
The word "officer" occurred eight times in the document. In two of those occurrences, the characters "ffi" were missing. The remaining 926 words conveyed without a problem.
    Any insights will be appreciated.
    Frank

Embedding the entire font shouldn't make any difference whatsoever. InDesign embeds all the glyphs that are used. If the font is embedded at all, Acrobat only uses the embedded font.
Furthermore, Acrobat (including Acrobat 7) uses the local fonts option if and only if the font being accessed is not at all embedded and that particular font is on the user's system.
What is very suspect here is that the ffi ligature appears correctly in only 2 out of 8 occurrences in the word officer and that you see no problems on your system using Acrobat 9 Pro.
Here is what I would look for:
    (1) Ascertain that the font is really embedded at all. Use CTRL-D and look to see whether the font is either embedded or subset embedded. If neither, that is the source of the problem. You could also run a preflight profile to ascertain that all fonts are properly embedded.
    (2) You might want to find out what your printer is
really doing with your file. Is he opening a page or two in Illustrator, something can can cause very strange PDF corruptions? Are there any steps that he is performing before opening it in Acrobat such as processing it in some prehistoric workflow system that has more errors than an early Mets game?
    (3) Find out whether your printer at least has Acrobat 7 updated with all the updates issued by Adobe. They were a whole carload of them. I think about 12 such updates in the 24 months that Acrobat 7 was current. You might also want to suggest that at this point, Acrobat 7 is a fairly old version for any printer that wants to stay up to date in terms of PDF print publishing workflow.

  • New printing problem with InDesign CS4

After having great success with Aisolve's earlier fix on printing from InDesign CS4 after upgrading to Lion, I'm having a new problems after installing the OS X 10.7.2 upgrade last week. When I try to print from  InDesign CS4 and Illustrator CS4 to my Lanier 445c/Ricoh C4500 at my workplace I get the following error message:
"Printing Error: The Adobe Print Engine has failed to output your data due to an unknown problem."
This seems like a different issue this time, as I'm able to print to my home printers, an HP LasertJet 2600n and an HP Photosmart C4270. I thought it might be a printer driver problems, but I've gone to Lanier's site and they don't have any new printer drivers for Mac OS X 10.7.
I also some research on Adobe's site, and found this message affecting CS1, 2 & 3. I tried the only fix that seemed to apply to me, which was re-naming/deleting the InDesign Deafults and InDesign SavedData files. (I have this problems even when I'm printing a text-only file without any graphics.) This fix didn't work.
I can print to the Lanier/Ricoh from Acrobat 9, and all my non-Adobe software just fine, so my work-around to date has been exporting to PDF and printing from there. My big problem is that I need the "Print Booklet" feature in InDesign for a big job I've got coming up this week. Can't do that from Acrobat. :-(
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Wanted to let folks reading this know that I spoke with an Apple tech person and found that the 10.7.2 upgrade apparently is the culprit, and is incompatible with wireless printing to my Lanier printer. I CAN print connected through USB. That's a work-around for now, but I'll need to contact Lanier about upgrading their driver
    for OS X 10.7.2.
Aisolve over on the Adobe board was also helpful in advising me that if I was able to generate a postscript file (which I was), and able to generate a PDF by distlling it through Adobe Distiller (which I am), then I can safely assume that the problem lies with the hardware, in this case the printer driver. This lines up with what Apple told me.
    Thanks, Apple and Aisolve!

  • Indesign CS4 Export PDF Crash/Quits

    Hi all,
I am part of a small company, we recently bought CS3 Design Standard for 3 new G5 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 Ghz iMacs, all have 2GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory, but sadly Illustrator and Indesign just kept quitting, so we were forced to updrade to CS4, a cost we could have done with out, but the problem persists. We Then upgraded our Suitcase to Fusion 2, as Fusion 1's auto activate doesnt work with CS4.
Every time we try to export artwork from Indesign to a pdf format Indesign either hangs or just quits, i have had this happen well over 20 times in 1 day, we really like the style of Indesign CS4 and hope someone, anyone, can help us out.
On a different note, none of the computers can access the Adobe website, the firewalls and routers/modem dont have any sites blocked yet www.adobe.com is the only one we can not access, any ideas??
    Thanks for your time.

  • InDesign CS4 generated PDFs bringing computers to their knees

I've see no reports of this, but PDFs exported from InDesign CS4 are bringing our G5 iMacs to their knees. My 2.0 Mhz machine with 1.5 Gig of RAM is unable to display the preview in the Finder. The same thing happens on my wife's slightly faster G5 iMac.
My iMac/Intel has displayed the preview, but it took quite a while.
This particular PDF (which I've copied to each machine so there's no network issues here) is 7.9 MB and was made with the Press Quality preset.
Newsflash: After about five minutes, my G5 has finally displayed the preview in the Finder window.
My wife has been working with smaller PDFs, using a Proof setting that converts to RGB, resamples and compresses the images. With those settings, the preview takes about a minute in her Finder and then another minute when she tries to attach the PDF to mail.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Thanks for the feedback. Me too, Sandee. And so had Pam until recently. But we're scratching our heads about what might have changed.
It looks as though the time is being spent by the Finder making the previews (for every page?). Is there a way for InDesign to make those previews? Does it?
    Grasping at straws.
By the way, we running Tiger 10.4.11. And the PDFs sent to our Windows-using client have caused him no problem whatsoever.

  • Print problems with InDesign CS4

    Hi,
I have been using InDesign CS4 for the last few years and been printing large format on an HP Deskjet 9560. I always got good color quality on the printouts. Recently, I updated the software on my MacbookPro to Snow Leopard and I was forced to get a new printer, the HP Officejet 7610. When I try to print a docment from InDesign the color quality is really poor. I believe that this is an application issue because I am not having printing color issues from other applications. Can someone please advise if I need to change my settings in the document for printing to help with this color issue?
    Thanks,
    Kim Shephard

Unfortunately, I have tried this. I choose 'layout' from the printer option within the driver  and pick 'short edged binding'. Still no luck.

  • Printer error with InDesign CS4

I have the Adobe Master Collection installed on Windows 7 64bit (Pruchased through MS Volume License).  Before installing windows 7, the system had Windows Vista Business 64-bit installed and had the same problem, so it is not OS related.  Connected directly to the computer via USB cable is an HP Design Jet 130.  All programs are able to print to it without any problems including Photoshop (64bit), Adobe Acrobat, Illustrator (32bit), Excel, Word, etc.  However, when trying to print a document from InDesign, I get the following error:
print driver host for 32bit applications has stopped working
After click ok, the printer selection box comes up, with the post script printer selected.  When you go and try and change the printer to ANY other printer including the DJ130, I get the following error:
Printer selection failed.  Restoring the previous selection.
I am still able to print documents from InDesign by saving them as a PDF and then opening them and printing them with Adobe Acrobat Pro, however, I should not have to do this, and this can become very time consuming.  The printer is also shared on the network with two other computers and they have no problem printing to it from InDesign.  Before I installed Windows 7, I completely un-installed the Master Collection.  After Win7 was installed, I re-installed the Master Collection, and I was able to print perfectly from Adobe InDesign.  It seems that one of the updates breaks it's printing capabilities with this printer, or at least on this system.
Has anyone else experienced this issue, or are there any other things that I can try to resolve this?  I have 8GB of RAM in the system and don't really see switching to a 32 bit OS to be an option as I would loose the ability to use 1/2 of my memory.

I am having the exact same problem. I have Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and Design Premium CS 5.5.  InDesign is the ONLY program that will not print to any printer. I get the "Printer selection failed." error every time I select any printer, even the Adobe PDF one. I have a Brother printer, an HP Plotter, and even an Oce copier/printer.  InDesign gives the error no matter what printer is selected form its own list.  Photoshop and Acrobat do not give me any issues, nor does any of the MS Office programs nor Autodesk softwares.  It's only InDesign that fails.  Reparing doesn't do anything and reinstalling every printer driver is pointless because it's only InDesign that produces the error.
Does anyone know what to do to fix this?

  • No matter which printer I choose, InDesign CS4 rejects it.

I downloaded the trial version of InDesign CS4 for my Vista machine. Every time I try to change the printer to anything but PostScript file, it tells me "Printer selection failed. Restoring the previous selection" ... is this a limitation of the trial version or what? CS3 prints fine to all my printers. .... if it matters, both my printers are HP. My main one is HP Business Inkjet 2800.
    Any help would be appreciated!!
    -Jennifer

One other thing. It matters, on Vista 64-bit versions, where the programs are installed. InDesign is a 32-bit program so you need to be sure it goes into the 32-bit program files directory.
Did you try installing a copy of the printer, or deleting the instance you have and reinstalling that? It shouldn't matter if InDesign is installed before or after the printer.
Oh man, Peter. I had no idea about the 32-bit, 64-bit thing. Where the heck is the 32-bit program files directory? This is a 64-bit operating system I have now and although I did delete the printer from the printer list and then added it again, since the drivers are included with the system, there is no reinstalling anything, it just adds the printer again. And since there are no drivers available for me to download and install, I don't get to do it manually, because all-knowing windows knows exactly what I need and tells me what I have to do (cough, cough).
I can print from Acrobat -- and Illustrator CS4, but not InDesign. Are those 32-bit application also, or just InDesign?
