Printer suggestions

I know this probably isn't the right discussion but I didn't know where else to go and I always get great feedback from you guys. I need to get a new printer and I would like one that is bluetooth. I don't need anything REAL fancy, although I would like one that prints pretty fast (and color obviously) Does anybody have any good suggestions. My friend has a new imac and he bought a nice new epson, and its pretty nice, but he's having a hard time getting the bluetooth to work. Does anybody know of one that for sure does work. Any suggestions at all.

Hello Eric,
I used to use Canon back years ago. I finally gave-up when I started going through ink too fast. I seem to remember writing a letter of complaint that went along the lines of "for the amount of money I spent in ink this month I could have purchased a much nice HP printer". Naturally, that was worded as such because HP printers were like $300 at the time and Canon printers were around $100 to $150.
I haven't used Canon since.
But, from my experience, I've found that HP's drivers are generally all included in Mac OS X, so I've never had the need to look for an alternative driver. I just plug it in, and it works. The only exception is when the printer comes out after the current OS version. But, then it always comes with a driver.
In my case, I just installed the driver that came with the 5420, and it installed smoothly and works great.
For the people with newer Intel Macs, the driver for the 5420 is already built-into OS X and is Universal / Intel Native.
But, as I mentioned above, I haven't used Canon printers myself in many years. So, I don't have much to compare to. But, I've had no complaints with HP printers and Macs.
Now, I have setup Canon printers for some PC friends (using Windows), and those worked great. They didn't produce the quality of print I expected, but that could have been the particular model they chose.
I guess it all depends on what you like

  • All In One Printer Suggestion

    Hello Everyone:
I am looking for a suggestion for an All-in-One Printer. I have an iMac, but also have a Mac Book that connects wirelessly for printing, as well as a Dell Laptop that connects wirelessly for printing, and I would also like to be able to print from my iPAD. I currently have a Epson Workforce 610, but unfortunately, the black wont print..after several cleanings, replaced ink cartridges etc, it just won't print black...so I'm looking. I've seen alot about the HPs, but also see lots of negative about the scanning compatibility with the MAC. I have to be able to scan. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jamie

I bought an HP C410a AIO Photosmart printer. Great printer. Works well with my iPhones and iPad thru AirPrint. Works great over Wifi with my MBP too. Has a separate paper tray for 5x7" photopaper. I took advantage of the HP trade-in and receive $50 rebate offer. This program does involve sending HP your old printer, but HP paid for the shipping! My net price from Staples came to $150 (after the rebate).
Some people say HP ink cartridges are too expensive but I plan to use CostCo ink refill service to cut my costs considerably.

I use a Brother HL-2070N on my home net. It's small, it's cheap, it's fast, and it prints text very well. It's not so good with graphics. (Noticeable banding with some files.) It's a Bonjour printer, so just plug it into Ethernet and it'll show on the net, no problems. (You can turn Bonjour off and just set up a fixed IP if you want.) So long as you have a wireless router of some kind you'll find it simple to add the 2070N to your network.
The 2070N also works with Windows machines without complaint.

  • My black Box doesnt match the colour of the image it is sampled from when printed, suggestions?

I have a black image covering half a page whilst placed next to it is a black box which has been sampled from the colour of the image, the CYMK are the same yet when printed the box comes out a different shade of black. suggestions?

There are a couple of things that could be going on, and as an aside, trying to match a solid background to a sampled area in an image is seldom successfule as there is too much variability in the actual color in most images.
The first possible issue is that the sample you are taking could be inaccurate. Are you sampling in ID or in Photoshop? You mentioned CMYK, and I don't believe ID will sample the CMYK in a placed image, but uses the preview instead. If you are sampling in Photoshop you are either sampling an average of the pixels in a square area, or a single pixel, depending on the eyedropper settings, and either choice is likely not to be truly representative in many cases. A further complication is if you are sampling an image that has a differnt color profile from the working space in ID.
The other big possibility is that your printer uses what is know as a dual-layer  or CT-Line (for continuous Tone/Line art) processor and handles the raster image differently from the vector object created in ID. Theres a pretty good explanation of this in InDesignSecrets » Blog Archive » Eliminating YDB (Yucky Discolored Box) Syndrome

  • Any printer suggestions for the ibook g4

I am completely overwhelmed and in need of some suggestion of the most compatable printer for the ibook g4. Mine is a 2004 model

    Hi Hotrodgirlly,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
What are you going to use the computer for and what features do you want(example: mostly printing documents, normal amount of pictures, professional photography, as well as all-in-one, scanner, fax, fast printing, portability, quality of print outs, etc)? Price range?
You may want to look at the following threads...

There are a ton of posts in Apple Discussions alone that can help you make a decision or narrow down your options. I suggest searching AD, Google, and any other search engine on the internet. Consumer Reports probably has a review section on new printers, but you can either buy it in the store or buy an online subscription (I believe).

  • Wireless Printer Suggestions

My Xerox 8400N printer just died requiring an expensive service call to get it up and running and I'm reluctant to spend the $$$ .. I've tried 2 so-called wireless printers (HP) but neither one can be see on the network (using an Airport Extreme with my iMac and an older iBook) .. I know I did everything correctly ...
    the Xerox always worked flawlessly
Any suggestions on printers under $200 that will definitely work? Inkjets are OK

I like the "HP OfficeJet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Printer, Copier, Scanner, Fax" http://store.apple.com/us/product/TV577LL/A it's very easy to set up. you just download the latest software on the HP website. install it. after the computer reboots, it will ask you to set up the printer. just plug the printer into the computer. the hp setup assistant it will ask if you want the printer to be wired or wireless. chose wireless, tell it to join your wireless network.
BUt if you already have an HP printer with wireless printing built in. I would call 1-800-hp-invent. it's a 24 hour free hotline to call. they should be able to help you setup your printer. Every time i've called them the wait time was under 5 minutes. Most of the time it was less then 2 minutes.

  • Ink....Suggestion and a new PRINTER suggestion

We should have other kinds of ink that we can install - for example, for those of us that do Scrapbooking wouldn't it be nice to have NEON ink kits, or Glitter Ink kits, also, if we are a cake decorator, why can we only have two kinds of printers? Why can't their be Edible Ink for all of the printer machines available on the market???
I really think that HP needs to make a Printer that can do a lot more than what just some of them do, for example, people usually work out of their homes these days,  and Graphic Arts, usually need to have the standard CMYK format in their ink, so having that would be great, also just because we are in graphic arts, doesn't mean we don't like to have fun, we should have two paper trays, one that can hold 12x12 regular cardstock paper to print on, and then another tray that can still do 81/2 x11 paper and still a 4x6 photo tray as well.
We should be able to have a Scanner on top, (thats even better than 48bit) but can also be used to print negatives (with a negative slide holder) and also included a autodocument feeder, on top.
The Guts of the machine, we should be able to print, scan, copy, FAX(color and Black and White) be able to connect our camera's and included a Card Reader for all of the standard cards available. (Duplex for those who want to make double sided cards) We should be able to use different types of inks, for different things, like I mentioned above, edible ink, for cake, glitter inks, neon inks, etc... just to be able to have fun with the printer while we are scrapbooking. it should still have the LCD screen where we can crop, zoom, print out index sheet, be able to print out wide screen printer pictures for example panorama feature, and be able to print labels onto our CDs afer we put pictures onto a CD or DVD disk, be able to use things like printing on Tracing Paper, Transparency paper, Vellum Paper, being able to print on to thin metal copper sheets or alumium sheets, be able print on new things to come, giving us the ability to print on whatever type of paper or item we want to print on.  Last the printer shouldn't be any bigger than a Photosmart 3210, print was, and also be able to be upgradeable, (upgradeable in firmware for the printer itself, allowing the printer to do more things than it did when we purchased it, And it shouldn't be anymore than $500.00 total.  These days we want to be able to do anything with out printers, and use all kinds of paper and items to print onto.. (the Cartridges you could make not just ink ones, but you could make one that embosses when it prints, and when we want to do that we change the printer ink cartridge to the embossing cartridge, Basically we want flexability with our printers. We also want them to hold up, and not fail or jam, or stop feeding with printer heads.
    Thanks, Kdunbar36

    I agree completely.
HP has all kinds of different printer software for all kinds of different printers, but most of them do much the same thing.
In fact, the panorama feature seems to have been removed from the Photosmart software.....Premier isnt even available for Vista, I dont think?
But, HP does offer many web pages to do some of the things your talking about here...Programs that run from hp.com.
Edible ink? Nah, I'll pass on that one, but some of your other ideas rock!

  • All-in-one Printer (Suggestions)

I am looking for a printer, scanner, copier ($100 price range) that works under Arch.  I have found that the HP Officejet 5610 (http://www.linux.com/articles/114181) works under linux, but I wanted to see if there were any success stories with people using it or other all-in-one printers under arch.  The main thing (looking to turn myself into a paperless home-office) I will be using it for will be scanning documents in, very few pics (if any), and not much copying nor printing of docs.
So if you know of any good scanning software to use (preferably gtk/gnome) that compresses images super tiny (file sizes), yet still keeps them readable when printed or emailed, that would be awesome.
Note:  I just stumbled across the HPLIP driver.  Not sure why I have not heard of it earlier.  The pacman (extra) repo has 1.7.4a, but 2.7.7 is released.  I am guessing it will be updated soon or an AUR will be created.
I know I am talking about HP alot, but this is just because I am use to them.  Any manufacturer will do.

I have not yet run across a printer that I could not set up to work properly in Linux. The same is true for the HP all-in-one printers. (I have set up two of those.) The hplip package should contain all the drivers for HP machines, although I suppose some printer they just released may only be available in an updated package. The existing package in pacman works fine for the printers I have set up. For scanning, I generally use Kooka (I run KDE), although XSane works fine as well. Both are front ends for sane. I believe HP provides more support for Linux than the other printer manufacturers, so it is OK to focus on them. Incidentally, that only goes for their printers. I understand that the HP computers are not necessarily "Linux friendly."

  • Color Laser Printer suggestion?

I'm looking for a good color laser printer for between $500 and $1000 for a small office. Don't need an all-in-one. Just a good printer. Ideally, a Bonjour enabled model.
This'll be used with two PowerBooks and desktop G4.

There are more and more good ones out there every day. You will have to decide for yourself, but when I was looking for one, I was looking for:
    1. Good print quality.
    2. Good speed, both black & white and color.
    3. Duplex printing.
    4. The ability to handle envelopes reasonably.
    5. Reasonable cost of supplies.
    6. PostScript, although that is pretty much a given these days.
I got a Ricoh Aficio 2000N, and it had a feature that I really like:
    7. Paper tray capacity of at least a full ream.
Other factors to consider: Cost of extra memory, since your ability to print at the best quality may be limited by memory. Connection speed, if you are printing such documents. Footprint size of the printer. Paper sizes usable. Extra paper trays.
I hope this gives you a starting point.

For entry level lasers I've pretty much standardized on the Brother.  I just installed an HL5470DW and it works like a charm.

  • All-in-one laser printer suggestion?

I need a laser all-in-one printer (print/scan/fax) to operate with my iMac (20", Intel Core Duo 2 GHz). Can anyone recommend a brand and model that works well with a Mac and doesn't cost too too much? I just purchased (and then returned) a Canon (model Imageclass MF4150) which, upon opening the box, I found did have a scan function for Mac OS. Any recommendations are very much appreciated. D.

If the MF4150 experience hasn't put you off Canon, I can recommend the MF4680. It can push scan to a shared folder on your Mac using Ethernet. All you need to do is enable Windows sharing on your Mac, then select a folder you want to scan to. Then on the MF4680, you create an entry to send the file to this shared folder.

  • Printer Suggestions (choosing between 2 Canons)

Our HP inkjet died and now I am looking for a replacement. I refuse to use another HP because of their lack of support (free at least) for Mac. I am down between 2 Canon printers - the Pixma MP 470 and the MP 520. There is about a $75 price difference between the 2 and I can't see why based on their published specs. I am running 2 iMacs (Intel 24" and an older G4). The printer will be attached to the G4 and if it is EASY I will share it from the G4. If not, then I will sneakernet whatever I need to print to it. Therefore, the real key is the G4.
Bottom line question, any opinion of the MP 470 and the MP 520?
    THANKS!

Ever considered going laser? We bought a Konica Minolta 2530DL. Prints far more economical as any ink-thing we know.

  • A3 inkjet printer suggestions

I'm doing mostly book design at present and using an Epson Stylus Photo 2100 to proof. But because the (7) carts' are ridiculously expensive and use up ink like its got a drink problem, I'm trying to find a low-cost – consumbles that is – A3 inkjet printer. A 4-colour printer would be adequate. And, of course, a RIP (for Mac OS X) would have to be available.
    Really appreciate any recommendations.

No need for real colour accuracy. It's mostly multi-page stuff – on average, around 200pp – and text plus some graphics with lots and lots of lo-res positional images (swapped out at pre-press).
This HP colour laser. Is it A3 – not quite sure what the US paper size equivalent is? What's the cost in dollars (or pounds if you happen to be posting from the UK)? Are the cartridges reasonably long-lasting?
In complete agreement about the ink sales making the manufacturers' profits. In Epson's case it's the paper as well. I can only use Epson Photo quality paper for printing out Bitmap images – other brands smear during printing.

  • Blutooth Printer suggestions?

    Hi all --
Curious which units are great bluetooth printers for the PB --- I understand there are some speed issues, but it cant possibly be any slower than burning data/images to a c.d. to print something off via my old G3... boo. (attempts at PB to G3 file sharing have been futile)
thanks in adv. for any info,
    John W.

I would recommend any Brother laser printer usually has decent support with Linux.  I use a Brother HL-5250DN and love it.  I have it networked and the native brother driver works great with cups.  Has a web browser interface to help network it and is relatively easy to set up.  I highly recommend it.
