Printing 20" iMac to 24" iMac via ethernet and router issue

Hi there, I hope someone can help me.
We have in our office a 20" iMac that my boss uses and a 24" iMac that I use. the 24" is connected to an ADSL2 router via ethernet, which in turn is connected to an HP 2200dn also via ethernet.
I have no problem printing from the 24" however, I can't seem to get the 20" to work. The drivers are the same and apparently the latest, and the print file does reach the printer, but upon reaching the printer it errors out... I've checked everything is set to sharing etc... but it still won't seem to work.
Anyway - I'm hoping someone out there knows either why it isn't working or what needs to happen for it to work...

Your profile indicates you are running 10.5.1 ?? If this is correct click the Apple Menu/Software Updates. Keeping your system software up to date can help.
Try repairing disk permissions for the printer issue.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
Also, try turning off both iMacs and peripherals. Wait about 5 minutes and restart the iMacs and the printers.

Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed. I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc. I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads. Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system. I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system. But are there other options to connect the new TC. Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above. after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working. Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant. I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work. The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network. Are we going backwards?

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??

I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC. the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.

You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

How to use Migration Assistant when trying to transfer from MacBook to a new iMac via Ethernet cable

I've been trying to transfer data from my MacBook to my new iMac via Ethernet cable and I get to the point of the transfer starting. Then on my iMac the Migration Assistant shuts down and takes me back to my desktop. Any ideas on why this keeps happening?

Start over, restoring the OS on the new machine, and follow the steps outlined in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide using the Setup Assistant.

Yes, you ran into a very understandable problem.
When you use Migration Assistant, it cannot over-write the account that you happen to be using at the time. Upon migrating accounts, it will tell you that it is going to create a new one, but that message is easy to miss.
If you have three identical accounts, log in to the account you want to keep, and delete the redundant ones in System Preferences > Users & Groups.
Now that you know, the easiest way to migrate accounts is to use Setup Assistant when you first get a new Mac. That eliminates any possibility for this to occur, but most people are so eager to use their new Mac that they elect to migrate later.
That's OK too, but in that case you would want to create a temporary account whose sole purpose is to run Migration Assistant so that you may migrate your old one with an identical name. Be sure to give the new account Administrator privileges. When that finishes you would log in to the newly migrated account, and delete the temporary account.

New iMac can't find the old iMac via Ethernet

I just bought a new 27" iMac and I am trying to migrate data from my old iMac.
I have the two machines hooked together via Ethernet and have Etherenet turned on in the source iMac but the new iMac can't find the old iMac. The pinwheel keeps spinning with no success. What should I do here?

Unfortunately you didn't read my post very thoroughly. You are correct, the new iMacs do not include FW however your old Mac probably does. For just that reason and more Apple makes a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter which you can use if you opt to use FW Target Disk Mode. However as I mentioned use TM or a bootable clone with Migration Assistant. If your old Mac was using any verison of OS X from Leopard (10.5.x) on at the very least you should have a Time Machine backup!
Also use Pondiini's guide as AnaMusic suggests, it's THE GUIDE for using Migration Assistant and Setup Assistant. He has also created excellent guides for Time Machine too.

Connecting a powerbook G3 to the internet via ethernet and a DSL modem. Does the G3 have the ability to do this?

I am trying to connect an older powerbook G3 (M4753) to the internet via ethernet and a DSL modem. Does the G3 have the ability to do this? I'm having alot of trouble. G3 Dialog box states the DHCP server will populate IP address, etc. It does not. The G3 also insists I enter the DHCP client ID.

HT204371 Airport Express via ethernet to router, and then use Airplay?

I am having what seems like an unusually difficult time accomplishing the following:
I have an Airport Express that I wish to connect to my router using an ethernet connection. My purpose for using the AE is solely to use Airplay (using iphones, ipads) to play powered speakers.
I seem to have no problem configuring the AE to act over WIFI to achieve this task - but instead I want to have the AE connection via ethernet, and not over WIFI, because I have experienced cut-outs in playing music when the AE is connected to my existing network over WIFI and I'm hoping that the ethernet connection would eliminate this.
Can someone please post the proper settings using Airport Utility? I have Utility version 6.1.

Hi! I'm at my wits end and getting no help from my IT department. I want to use my Time Capsule to create a wireless network within my office. I can directly connect my TC to the internet via ethernet and an assigned static IP address. However, doing so I'm unable to connect to the internet using the created wireless network on my laptop. I've tried using the bridge option for sharing as well as the "sharing an IP address" and neither configuration is working. any thoughts?

I have the same setup; my ISP uses static IP only. No probs configuring a LinkSys router but with TC it's not obvious where to plug in the info. Can't ping the TC router via IP address to setup directly like the LinkSys which would be simple. Is the out of box router address really 10.0.1.1 on the LAN side? I want to use the 192.168 sequence and have changed it but still no success as I can't determine where to put the static IP! Can you give me something specific? By the way, it works fine thru the LinkSys router in Bridge mode.

What is the make & model of your modem?
You pretty much stated the correct wiring. There should be an Ethernet cable connected between the modem and the WAN (circle of dots) port on the AirPort Express base station.
Anytime you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of that hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.

How to Install Tiger on a 1st series iMac via Ethernet?

I want to upgrade a 333MHz iMac to Tiger which has no firewire ports, only USB. I don't have an external HD to boot from, except my G5. I want to find out how I can install it via ethernet, is it possible? And if it is, how would I do it? Any help would be much appreciated.

First off, if you could install Tiger on that machine you would be limited to the first 8 GB of the hard disk:

That gives you very little room to work with for anything that needs to be on the boot partition.
Also if Jaguar hasn't been installed on the machine, you'll want to upgrade the Firmware before installing Jaguar or later on the machine, otherwise face the possibility of a permanently dark screen.

As you already have a PowerMac G5, let that be your Mac OS X machine, and network your iMac to the PowerMac G5 and leave the iMac in Mac OS 9.

I do not recommend upgrading the iMac G3 333 past 10.3.9 (though as you can see you'll still need the firmware update and be limited to 8 GB if you go to Mac OS X). Let the iMac G3 run what it is able to run according to Apple. Doing otherwise would be akin to putting a jet engine on a chariot. It may work, but then again, any attempted further upgrades would result in a serious jalopy of a machine.

TM wireless routing from iMac via Ethernet cable

I'm in Spain and have a wireless router from my ISP. I have my iMac connected over wifi to the router. I now have a 4th gen Time Machine that I am connecting directly to my iMac via an ethernet cable.
What I'm trying to do is to use the Time Machine to create a new wifi network while connected to my iMac by the ethernet cable. Main reason is, I'm Spain and connect to a VPN so it appears as if I'm in the US for US television and a few other services (US citizen residing abroad). I want to be able to sign into the VPN on my iMac and have this signal (and IP) broadcast over the wifi network I create.
I was able to finally setup a new wireless network with the Time Machine, but as soon as I login to the VPN, the Time Machine signal drops. Is there a way to use the Time Machine as a throughput wifi device for the signal sent over the ethernet cable between the iMac and Time Machine? It appears that the change in IP address when signing into the VPN is what may be causing the problem. Is there a way to fix this or circumvent it?

The box is a Time Capsule. Time Machine is the backup software on a Mac and only on a Mac.
Is the vpn a software version on the iMac?
Generally using a vpn and linking it via the computer to another router is particularly messy.
You are much better buying a cheap router that will do vpn with 3rd party firmware. Most vpn services recommend this kind of setup. I think you will do much better following their recommendations. Simply connect the iMac behind the vpn router when you want access to material from US.
TC do not have built in vpn and are difficult to setup for anything more than most basic functions.
I am not sure you can do ICS (internet connection sharing) from a vpn connection to the TC.. without a lot of manual routing rules.
Do a google.. there are several sites with info. Search for mac internet connection sharing vpn
In the end.. get a cheap router and use openvpn.

IMac to Time Capsule via Ethernet and wireless to MacBook

Hi, here was my previous situation:
MacBook connected wirelessly to TC for Time Machine. TC was not linked directly to router, but for extending the network.
Now I have a new iMac which I connected via Ethernet to the TC to use for Time Machine and external storage for iTunes. That works fine, however...
The TC is no longer part of the wireless network, so my MacBook can not connect any longer.

If someone comes across this post, any help would be apprciated. i have the same issue. The time capsule is attached by ethernet to cable modem. The time machine is also connected by ethernet cable to my G5. The time capsule shows up in airport utility. I also have internet and mail. The Time capsule network is also seen by my wifes macbook pro and she has internet.
However, the time capsule does not show up in my sidebar or on my desktop and it does not show up as an option as the backup disk for time machine - in fact no disks show up.

Help connecting 2TB Time Capsule to iMac via ethernet cable only

I have an iMac running OS X Version 10.9.3, and a 2 TB Time Capsule, which at our last residence I used both as my wireless router and Time Machine backup (via wi-fi). We recently moved and got Comcast, which provided us with a very, very fast router. As a result, I would like to start using the Time Capsule only as a Time Machine backup, preferably via an ethernet cable connection. I tried connecting the Time Capsule to the iMac via an ethernet cable with no joy. When I did, it seemed to bring back my old wireless network, which I don't want. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Nothing specific about the Comcast modem/router, but definitely something specific about the Time Capsule in that it needs to connect to the Comcast modem/router over a wired connection to allow backups to occur over the Comcast wireless network. As we have said, the Time Capsule must connect to the Comcast modem/router using an Ethernet cable, as you see illustrated in the TC Setup Guide.
This solution doesn't really work, as our computer/TC is upstairs and the Comcast modem/router is downstairs.
Ethernet cabling can be run 300+ feet, or about 100 meters with virtually no signal loss, so you should be able to locate the Time Capsule anywhere that you want. My Time Capsule is located in a closet, about 60-70 feet away from the main router.
is there a way that I can use the TC as an upstairs wifi extender and still do my Time Machine back-ups wirelessly?
Yes. When the TC connects to the Comcast modem/router using an Ethernet connection, you could use the wireless capability of the TC to create a wireless network with the same wireless network name and password as the Comcast network. Then, you will have the same network upstairs and downstairs with much greater range.
You will be able to backup to the TC using wireless....or, if you prefer a much faster connection....connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <--> ports on the TC.
For example, let's say that you are making the first backup from your Mac to the TC when everything on the Mac is copied over to the TC. Typically, this might take 8-10 hours on average using wireless, but Ethernet would require only about 2-3 hours.
Once you have the first complete backup done, you could then perform subsequent backups over wireless, since these will only take a few minutes each time that the Mac backs up with only the changes that have occurred since the last backup.

IMac to Airport, PC to iMac via Ethernet?

I have a 2006 iMac, and I now have a pc which I need to do some course work. My iMac is connected to the internet via Airport. This works well as my router is in another room. The pc is next to the iMac, but does not have a wireless card. Can I connect it to the iMac somehow (ethernet?) to share the internet connection?
I have tried connecting an ethernet cable between the two and going to Sharing in the system preferences but the ethernet option is not there. Is this cos I need crossover cable? I've read something about that, but I've also read that intel iMac's do not need the crossover cable.

Hi iLee,
No you do not need a crossover cable. Ethernet ports on Intel iMacs (and indeed all current Macs) are auto-sensing and thus do not need them.
In order to set this up, connect the two computers with a known good Ethernet cable. Then on the iMac, go to *System Preferences* > Sharing Next select *Share connection from* > AirPort and then To > Ethernet. Finally put a check next to *Internet Sharing*.
You don't mention what OS the PC is using, but it will need to be configured to use DHCP.
Note that the iMac will need to be on and connected to the Internet any time you want to use the PC to connect to the Internet. Pretty obvious but you'd be surprised how many people forget this.

Imac via ethernet/macbook via wireless Netgear router. No network ability.

I hooked my imac (imac G4/700) to a Netgear router via ethernet cable. My MacBook (DualCore) accesses the router via airport connection. Both can get to internet fine. But I CANNOT get them talking to each other- thus sharing info. Appletalk is enabled as well as file sharing on both. No apparent firewalls are on either. ANy ideas??
