Printing a book in Europe

I have a book which has been published through a private publisher in the US (Booksurge).  It has been translated into German and is now to be published through a similar online publishing house in Germany.  My colleague is worried that US-built pdf will not be acceptable to the printer in Germany.
I know I will need to change the page dimensions and margins etc to meet the specifications of his printer in Germany, but I would like to hear that the pdf I make by exporting to pdf for high-speed printing will be acceptable to the German printer.  Are there any differences I need to know about to make sure this goes smoothly?
All the illustrations (33 full-color illustrations) have been prepared as 300 dpi CMYK.  Is there another standard in Europe that I will need to convert to?
We have used standard fonts that are available on our two systems, and have added only one font which I can provide to the printer.
Thanks for any hints and kinks you can share!

These all sound like questions you should be asking the printer.
They may use Coated Fogra 39 profiles, or GRACOL, I doubt very much that they are using Euroscale, bu only they could tell you???
As for fonts, they should be embedded automatically in the PDF by InDesign.
Submit your PDF early to the printers and include your colour profile in the PDF.
But why not get in touch with the printers in germany and ask them to supply a .joboptions file for you?
You then load that file into Indesign under File>PDF Presets, Load and select the file and use that PDF joboptions to make a new PDF for the printers in Germany.
I'm sure they could organise a DHL/UPS/Overnight of a few hi-res samples of colour pages if you really needed it.

  • Why can't I print a book with iphoto 09?

I have a book under "keepsakes" that it says (0) next to the name of the album. But when I open it up you can see the pictures in there. I can't print the book though when I'm ready to input the number of copies that part is in gray and it won't let me choose one. I tried with another album and it doesn't work either.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Paulina,
Sorry I don't know the answer to your question, however you may have better luck posting in the iPhoto forum, click the link and it will take your there. Then repost, that forum is where the iPhoto guru's hang out if you can't get help on this forum.

  • Printing address book on day-timer portable page

Anyone have any suggestions for the page layout to print address book to Day-Timer Portable page format? They don't give any options (like Avery 5160, etc). My wife still likes her addresses printed out for her Day-Timer book. The old app that she previously used on her old Mac no longer works on the new OS on her MacAir.

I used to have the Palm Desktop application on my old Mac and that what we used to printout the Day-Timer Portable page format. Of course the Palm Desktop app no longer works on the new Mac OS. I guess if I could get the page layout for that app, I could duplicate the layout.

  • When printing a book to PDF, bookmark definitions are not saved

I recall seeing another post about this issue and I can't find it now, but none of the workarounds mentioned there worked for me, so here goes:
I am working on a book migrated from FM 9 to FM 11, and when I print to PDF, I specify the bookmarks I want to display in the Bookmarks tab of the PDF Setup for Selected Files dialog. The PDF prints fine, but when I want to print the book again, FM doesn't remember my settings, forcing me to set the bookmarks from scratch every time. This has proven pretty tedious seeing that I'm working with an old book in which the styles aren't intiutive, so trying to remember all of them every time isn't the best of fun. When I print a single file in the book, the settings are saved properly.
In the previous post, I remember reading that this was a bug in FM and trying the following suggested workarounds (none of which worked): Switching to structured mode; saving the desired setting in one file in the book, printing that document, and then printing the book (was supposed to result in FM remembering the settings for the entire book); saving the book right after it prints; selecting all files in the book and saving as PDF, as opposed to selecting the book and then File > Save as PDF.
I'd be glad to know if anyone has any ideas, or if Adobe are planning to post a fix for this issue.

It is my understanding that FrameMaker uses the setting stored in the first document of the book when creating a PDF from a book. So, open the first file in the book and make a PDF, setting your bookmarks as you want for the whole book. Then create the PDF of the book. Check the settings before you click Print to make sure they are what you want. You may have to make a few changes, but it should remember them the next time.
I work with FM 9, so this may not be relevant to FM11. I find it necessary to open the PDF settings dialog each time I make a PDF of a book, and click Save/OK/whatever, to make sure the bookmarks are created correctly. The settings are always correct, no changes needed; but I find it necessary to open the dialog and close it to get the bookmarks correctly indented in resulting PDF. It may have been fixed in FM11.

  • Microsoft Word- printing a books?

I can't seem to figure out to get my Microsoft word to print a book. On a Windows PC, there is the option to print a document in booklet form, where the pages are doubled and you can print entire books this way.
i see a lot of questions about Aperture in relation to book printing, but I don't want to pay for printing my books nor do I want to have to save it in PDF. What a giant pain. Am I just too daft to find the option for printing bookfolds in Microsoft Word or was Apple being a greedy monopolizing cretin by removing that option and forcing us to buy Aperture?
P.S. If anyone has any freeware that doesn't require PDF conversion and is simple, please do tell. Thanks.

Office comes with extensive help. I suggest you take the time to look in the help files for the answer. Word is quite capable of printing in book form but your document layout needs to be properly configured.

  • Layout for printing a book?

Does a page ordering template exist for Pages for printing a book with two pages per side of 8X10 in. paper (printing both sides) so that the pages will be ordered correctly when the sheets are stacked, folded and stapled? I want to publish poetry chapbooks using ten to twelve sheets of paper. I realize I shall need to trim the edge opposite the fold once folded. Or, is there a better way?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
This is one of the frequent answers I post. There are a few ways to do this. The first two involve setting your Pages document in File > Page Setup… to landscape orientation. I originally wrote this for Pages 2. In Pages 3, use the page layout mode for #s 1a & 1b.
1a - Use linked text boxes. This is easier done with the layout showing. First you need to add a page break to have two pages. Click in the body area & then Insert > Page Break. Now click outside the layout area to enter object mode & click the "T" in the tool bar or Insert > Text to create a text box & type something in it. This is to keep the box from disappearing if you click elsewhere & the text can be replaced later. If you already have some text to paste in you can just paste while in object mode & a text box containing your text will be created. You will now need to click outside the layout again & drag the cursor toward the text box to select it. You can now position the first text box in the lower right of your 2-page document. It is easier to see where it goes if you have the document set up with 2 columns. Click on the blue-outlined tab at the lower right of the text box to create a new of the same size & move the box to the upper left. Repeat for a box for the upper right & again for the lower right. You will now have 4 linked text boxes.
1b - Start as in 1a creating a 2-page document with 2 columns in landscape orientation. For this one you will use the body text area. Just type or paste your text in as normal, starting in the upper left. When you have your text done, cut all of the text in the first column (upper left), insert a column break after the last character on the now lower left column & paste the cut text after it in the now lower right column.
Neither one of these will let you automatically use page numbers because Pages "sees" each page & you actually have 2 pages per page.
2 - Use Cocoa Booklet to create a booklet with any number of pages (best in a multiple of 4). Start with your Pages document in Legal size & larger than normal font size. Export the Pages document to a PDF & then drag the PDF to the icon of Cocoa Booklet. It will create a new PDF in booklet form.

  • Printing hardbound books (like Apple's iPhoto books) from Pages docs

I've printed a few hardbound books of photos from iPhoto and have been pleased with the results, particularly those from iPhoto 6.
Recently, I used Pages to lay out a book of photos, game scores, and some text for my son's baseball team. The original idea was to take the pdf file to the local Kinko's and have it printed and bound with transparent covers and plastic ring thing. But Kinko's proved unable to print my full-bleed pages, and the quality of the prints turned out to be worse than I could do with my Canon iP8600 printer at home!
Faced with the task of printing 20 copies of this 24-page book at home, I'm now wondering...can Pages documents (or pdfs) be printed by Apple's book service? If not directly, can I import the pdf file into iPhoto and print each page as a single full-bleed 'photo' using one of the iPhoto templates? I'd have to redo the layout of the Pages book to fit iPhoto's template dimensions, and that would be a LOT of additional work, so I'd like to know beforehand if it is technically possible to print the book in this manner and if Apple would obect to my doing this.
And if none of the above is possible, is there some printing service out there that would accept a pdf file from Pages and print it as a hardbound book similar to Apple's for a reasonable cost?
    Thanks!

No, kinko's does not do hardbound books, at least not here in Japan. All they offer is simple binding of loose pages. Options include plastic spiral-like binding, staples, plastic covers, and basic glue/cloth tape. Papers are whatever you bring in or whatever you print on at the shop. Results are adequate for reports and such, but not for long-term archival purposes or gifts.
As for my own book project, I ended up printing 19 copies on my 8-ink Canon printer using fairly high quality duplex paper. Took several days -- mostly because of the need to buy and install new ink cartridges every few hours (took far more ink than I had expected). The results were far better than could be done on Kinko's printers, but the cheap (not really!!) bindings did not leave a good impression. Moreover, adding the binding cost to the cost of the paper and ink brought the price of each book to over $30 -- more than it would have cost to use Apple's service.
Just after printing and binding these books, I created a 100-page iPhoto book of vacation photos. Book came back in about a week and looked superb. Showed it to the coaches -- the ones who work for printing companies -- and they were quite impressed. Still don't know why they resisted going this route for the baseball book.
Next time, if there IS a next time, I will insist upon using Apple's service.

  • When I try to print my book I receive the following error message:  One or more of the images in your book are not presently available at full resolution. Please reconnect to these files by mounting the volume(s) containing the original images.

When I try to print my book, I receive the following error message:  One or more of the images in your book are not presently available at full resolution. Please reconnect to these files by mounting the volume(s) containing the original images.  I don't understand what this means since all the photos are in the book.  Can someone please clarify?

When you look at the images in the browser, do you see any arrow icons on your thumbnails? Like these:
When you import your images from a folder on your system drive, you have two ways to import:
Managed: Import and store the images in the library
Or referenced: Leave the images in the folder outside the Aperture library.
This is controlled by the "Store Files" settings in the Import panel:
If you did not set "Store files" to "In the Aperture Library", the originals will stay in the folder outside.
The error message you get, suggests that Aperture assumes the original files are in a folder outside the library.
Select one of your images in the Browser and use the command "File > Show in Finder" - is this command available or dimmed out?

  • Color for Aperture online printing and books

Anyone know what color profile in Aperture we need to choose for having photos printed or books made from Aperture's online services?

Books are printed using the Kodak NexPress which does use icc color profiles. In fact when you qualify a grade of paper you can either generate a "universal" profile (for a grade of paper) which will work (but not great) with different coated papers. Then their is a "Custom" icc profile they generate. A custom profile will work only with the paper that has been qualified. That is the best profile which will give the best results.
If they wanted (Apple) they could provide the profile as one has been generated and to my knowledge they use the same paper all the time for books. It is my understanding they may use several commercial printers all who use the Kodak NexPress for all their products. Personally I think the HP Indigo does a slightly better job but there are issues with that technology as well!!

  • I need to print a book as a booklet.

I need to print a book as a booklet. but the annoying default feature of adobe allows me to print only in the order (page 1 and 8 in the same side of sheet and so on, so that when i bind it it'll come in order.) now what if i don't wanna bind it and i wish to just have it as it is, i.e) page 1 and 2 on the same side of sheet, page 3 and 4 in the back side of same sheet and so on?

You need to whatever product forum relates to what you are trying to do and post your questions there.  THis forum is for helping people to download and install Adobe products.

  • Book panel - Print the book icon - Disable

    Hi,
In our InDesign workflow, we have inbuilt script which does some validation and then print the document as PS and PDF. Sometimes, operators creates the PDF using InDesign own "Print" and "Export" menus by which the inbuilt validations are completely ignored by mistake. To avoid this, we have start-up script for Indesign (pasted below), which will disable both Print, Export, including flyout menu in the Book panel. This is the way we are sure that operators can't make mistake. Unfortunately, we could not disable the "Print the book" icon appears in the book panel, by which operators creates PDF by mistake. Could you please advise show to disable the "Print the book" icon from Book panel?
    Here goes the script:
    var disableMenu8 = app.menuActions.itemByID(65803).addEventListener("beforeInvoke", stopMenuAction);  //print book
Please find the book icon I am referring at https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B7-E8BeUp3OjUUY4Q1ZfRTF4cEk/edit?pli=1

    Hi Saran/All,
We also having the same process.
I tried the below code, but it is not working for me.
I placed the below code in the start up script, but it shows error.
    var disableMenu8 = app.menuActions.itemByID(65803).addEventListener("beforeInvoke", stopMenuAction);  //print book
Search through google but I am not able to find the code.
    Please give solution for me.
