Printing and File Sharing Help

1) My school recently upgraded my Mac lab to the new 27" which has Mavericks on it. I have been unable to print to our two printers, Canon Pro9000 and Canon iP4300. I installed the driver that Canon had on it's website. I reset my printers. When I readded them it tried to install software it detected as missing, but was unable to and told me I may still be able to use the printers. I did all software updates available, but it did not help. After adding the printers, I try to print something and the printer icon comes up and instantly flashes and disappears. When you open the print queue through system preferences nothing is there but a warning message stating that there is software missing.
2) File sharing does not work like it used to! I went through and turned on guest access for file sharing so that students could send files to each other. They are not able to just put items in the public drop box like our previous computers (Snow Leopard 24") without connecting to the computers, but they cannot connect unless I have a password on the user account. If they do put a password in and send the files that way, the files cannot be opened on the other computer because the permissions are not right. I tried changing the permissions in the information box, but that didn't work. They have the little red icon on them.
On our previous computers we were always able to file share and the files were never restricted so this is new territory to me as to why it doesn't work the same.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as my extensive research has not led to the results that I need.

Update, in case anyone sees this... I did a software update on the old iMac that the printers are connected to and found a different driver update there. I don't know why I didn't think to check there first. That all works now.
However, I could still use help with the file sharing issue, if anyone knows.

No web sign in access for Verizon online backup and file sharing - HELP!

I need to sign-in via web browser to my backup files in my Verizon Online Backup and File Sharing service. The Verizon site redesign redirects the old URL with a sign in to a sales page with no way to reach my stored files.
I contacted Verizon support more than a week ago about this asking for a URL with a sign in option to the cloud, was told that it was a problem affecting many customers (obviously eveyone with the online backup and filesharing service!) created by the redesign and that they would have a page created to allow login within 24 hours. I've heard nothing back and still have no access.
I made very clear that this was a HUGE problem for me, as I'm out of the country and rely on file access, and was on deadline for a critical professional project. The support tech I was on live chat with assured me they were working on it and that he would contact me via email as soon as it was resolved. Lots of apologies, etc. but now, a week later ... still no access and no contact. Astonishingly unprofessional.
When I tried again to find a link and/or contact support on Friday I was given no option to file a support ticket, chat with support or do any other kind of follow up. I've tried every search string option possible, including the name of the service with "sign in" appended (the Verizon nomenclature)--site searches a week ago for the service name returned null results. Web searches produce summaries from the old "My Services" page that include "sign in" but those links now redirect to the sales page that tells me how great it is I'll be able to access my files with a web browser with Online Backup and File Sharing. But no option to access the service.
Has anyone figured out a workaround or have a saved URL that still resolves to a Sign In portal?
I grow more desperate by the day. Thanks for any assistance.

I just wasted a lot of time on this same issue -- it turns out I couldn't find my way into the web application because I normally log into a subaccount, and you have to be logged into the primary. I had tried logging into the primary but apparently hadn't tried all possibilities from there.
So I chatted with Verizon support and got the phone number for Online Backup support, left them a message (because their hold music is so repellent I couldn't stand to remain on the line, maybe that's deliberate) and got called back about four hours later (and a second callback the next day, since I hadn't responded to the the voicemail they left on the first callback).
So here are the instructions (until they change the web site again...)
1. log into the primary account (not a subaccount)
2. click My Verizon
3. click My Services on the left
4. click Broadband Essentials and Extras (right under My Services)
5. click the Manage button next to My Subscriptions
6. click the Verizon Online Backup and Sharing xx MB button

Printer and File Sharing with Windows is not working

I have a MacBook Pro, Vista machine, and an XP machine on my network.
The MacBook Pro is running 10.5.2.
The Windows machines can see the MacBook Pro and access files on it, but I cannot see the Windows machines in Finder - thus I can't access the printers on those machines.
If I goto 'Finder> Go> Connect to Server' and enter smb://ipadress I am able to mount the shares and access them.
But obviously this does not help me with Printer sharing.
Any help is appreciated, but FYI I have been reading many suggestions and none have worked.

Go to "System Preferences/Security/Firewall" and change settings to: "Set access to specific services and applications". "File Sharing" and "Printer sharing" were already present for me, I don't know how to get them if they are not, and I don't know what the ramifications for security are. I can now see Windows computers and printers.

Print and file sharing used to work...

First off, Windows XP, Linksys wireless wrt54g version 2, One desktop connected to the router wired, one laptop, wireless Linksys wireless card. Firmware is updated to most current version, wep encripted.
I used to be able to share files between the 2 computers and print from my laptop wirelessly if the desktop computer was on. I've always shared had the internet connection working, and it still does work just fine, but the file sharing and print sharing no longer do. It allows me to see the other computer connected to the router, but will not let me connect to the other computer. I get an error message, I'll post a pic of that. Nothing has changed, it just stopped working. I also have turned off both of the MS firewalls in attempt to get this to work, and that didn't help.
Both computers are virus and spyware free, AVG antivirus, adaware-se and spybot search and destroy, along with spywareblaster are always run and updated,

Just a quick follow up.
I ran into the same problem and for two nights straight it drove me nuts. After reading this post about the firewall I decided to do some investigating.
All firewall software applications have a option to add a range of secure I.P. address. You must enter the range that the router gives you. 192.168.1.100-200 etc. My old router used a 192.168.2.1 and this messed me up.
After entering the new info, file print sharing was good to go.

I would like to gather some security information on file and print sharing on my wireless network before I set it up . What steps do I need to take to make it secure? Is it better to just buy a wirelss print server?

You can secure the wireless network, set a password on the shared resources or both.
The box said windows xp or better... So I installed Linux!

Setup Leopard for Email, DNS and File Sharing Help!!

I'm new to configuring Leopard and I'm a bit confused. I already configured windows server but it's my first Mac Server
My questions:
1- Which name should I use for the DNS? I have a domain registered, do I use mydomain.com? I won't be hosting websites here as they are hosted somewhere else.
2- How do I configure email to use mydomain.com? I'm really confused here, because on my first try, when sending emails it was coming as [email protected] instead of [email protected] I don't want to redirect the MX records until I do this.
3- when creating users it doesn't take @mydomain.com as default on the email address, do I have to type it manually?
Please help!! I need to have this working ASAP!!

hi, and welcome to Apple Discussion.
1. There are no hard and fast rules, but it is a good idea to have a dns A record and reverse record in the format of say 'myservername.domain.com' and call your server myservername.
2. the fact that you have the term 'local' in there, would suggest you don't have a correct forward and reverse DNS setup. That is not the end of the world for email, but best to get the DNS setup first then reboot the server.
3. Correct. You can add the format [email protected] as a secondary name in the workgroup setting.

Air Drop and File Sharing Between Macs Please HELP

I have a 2011 Mac Book Pro running Mavericks and a 2010 Mac Pro running mountain lion and I am having trouble air Dropping and file sharing between them.
My MBP works fine. It can see other macs and share with them on my home network. My MP on the other hand cant see any other computers under the shared devices location in my finder. I have turned on file sharing for my MP as well as screen sharing. Neither works. My Mp used to be able to Air Drop and File share.
When I try to Air Drop to my MP it wont receive the item.
Has someone been through this before and know how to fix the issue? Ive been trying to research this for a while and haven't been able to find a solution.
Any help would be great!

Are you using a frieWall on individual Macs?
If you are using a Router you control, individual computer FireWalls are not needed.

I would like to download my iTunes library onto a mac mini running OS 10.4.11 (and iTunes version 9.0.2), or transfer it from my macbook air, running OS 10.7.5. Tried downloading direct from iTunes and file sharing, but neither is working.

Hello apple support community! I'm trying to download my music purchases from iTunes onto my old Mac Mini. It runs OS 10.4.11 and doesn't have the capacity to upgrade to a newer OS. When I ask iTunes to check for available downloads, it says there are none. I have tried updating the iTunes software (version 9.0.2) but it can't connect to the server, even though I am on a wireless network. I've tried using home sharing and file sharing with my macbook air, but neither are working. Grateful for any suggestions!! The only thing I really use this mini for is music, so really hoping to be able to get my music purchases on there. Thanks.

Thanks, Jim, for taking the time, but the reply is unfortunately vague in the exact area of my confusion! "you need to copy that file to your new computer..." Well, the Import/Export instructions make it seem as if the two computers should be able to communicate this file thru wifi, but that's the linkage I can't seem tocreate with Import/Export. Should I instead email a copy to myself (thats what applecare suggested)? Copy it to and from a thumb drive? But then place the file where? And the article was helpful, but should I be trying to move the Library file or the Library.xml file (as iTunes Help suggests)? Sorry to be so clueless about it...I suppose I buy Apple in the hopes of not having to think about this stuff, which approach seems not to be serving me well. Thanks again for your time!

Screen sharing and file sharing not working on LAN

This is not a Mavericks specific problem since it existed before I upgraded to Mavericks. I have a LAN that consists of 3 MBPs and 1 MacPro.
Local screen sharing and file sharing works fine on all of these computers except for one MBP. From this MBP I am able to connect to all of the other computers for screen sharing and file sharing. But I can't connect to this particular MBP for screen sharing or file sharing from any of the other Macs.
This MBP shows up in the left hand side column under "Shared" on all the other computers. But I am unable to make a connection from any computer to the problematic MBP. I get the message, "There was a problem connecting to the server "xxxxxxxx". The server may not exist or is unavailable at this time".
I have tried toggling off and on screen sharing and file sharing with no effect. One probably pertinent strange thing that I notice is that under the Screen Sharing set up the green button next to "Screen Sharing:On" is green. But the message under it states:
"Other users can access your computer's screen
at vnc://johnmacbookproretina/ or by looking for “John MacBook Pro” in the Finder sidebar."
The problem is that my computer name is "John MacBook Pro" and the LocalHostName is "JohnMBPr.local". I believe that at some point in the past the computer name and/or LocalHostName was "johnmacbookproretina".
Similiarly, under File Sharing I am informed:
"Other users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at “afp://johnmacbookproretina” or “smb://johnmacbookproretina”."
I would appreciate any help I could get to resolve this perplexing issue. Thanks.

I've finally been able to solve my own problem.
File sharing and screen sharing on the problematic MBP was being blocked by firewall rules that had been set up several weeks ago when I had installed a trial version of DoorStop X firewall software. I had previously trashed the app when the 30 day trial ended. I did not realize that the software had left a set of firewall rules in the Library/StartupItems folder. Among other things, the rules were set to deny access to the computer on the ports used for file sharing and screen sharing. Once I trashed the DoorStopStartup folder in the StartUpItems folder all the connection problems resolved with a computer restart.

Seeking a document management and file sharing solution for an online client portal

Late last year our developers created a Member’s Portal for a client’s website (built with WordPress) enabling Members to have a secure area for a discussion forum and crucially, secure
document storage and access, and file-sharing. The WordPress plugin chosen for the Portal was WP-Client.
We have a problem though and I wonder if you or anyone can help?
Basically, the solution was supposed to be like Dropbox or Google Drive but within the Portal but with slight differences. The problem is that the current solution we have isn’t like either
and has various flaws which make it unpopular with most members. It uses free software called kcfinder – see
http://kcfinder.sunhater.com/ as the basis for the file management systems.
So we are seeking to change the file management system. This system must do the following:
It’s got to be intuitive e.g. the action open or download must be ‘typical’ (it is not so in kcfinder you have to right click to download for instance
You must be able open an Office document (especially Word, Excel and Powerpoint) online in situ within the portal. Currently in kcfinder you have to download it.
You must be able to edit it online. Currently you have to download it, open it, edit it, re-upload it and overwrite it.
The client uses Sharepoint (I think that’s part of MS Office 365) and wants to be able to I think drag docs from there straight into the Portal file management system (I think at the moment they have to download a file from Sharepoint to their hard drive
and then upload to kcfinder.
We are currently investigating using a WP plugin for Google Drive

However having loaded the plugin, the developer has found that two issues remain that so far defeat us:
Firstly, and this seems to be applicable to using Google Drive outside the portal as well as in it - you can’t edit Word docs online in Google Drive without creating a Google Doc. This means we get duplicate docs which we don’t want – and they’re in
the wrong format. We want Word and no duplication. The members/users don’t have time to delete and change the format back to Word. I guess the same applies to other Office docs.
Second, apparently you can’t create a new folder in Google Drive in the portal.
So my question for this forum is really what can you suggest, either as a fix to the Google Drive solution or is there a totally different plugin or set up we can use? Ideally it should
be Office-based or friendly since most of our users use Microsoft Office.
The other proviso is that it must be affordable. We/client cannot afford the $10 per user per month that some systems charge. The attractiveness of the Google option is not only the wide
use of Google Docs (notwithstanding the fact that you can't open Word in GD instead it creates a duplicate in GD) but the fact that the plugin is cheap.

and press enter.
Type in tracert
type in the domain name of the site and press enter.

I want to use iChat video and file sharing with Windows users

Nowadays, iChat is compatible with AOL/AIM, Google Talk, Jabber, Mac.com and MobileMe instant messaging services. I know that Yahoo Messenger support will be available soon in Mac OS X Lion.
I tried using AOL/AIM and Google Talk natively in iChat in order to talk with Windows users which were using Google Talk application or web chatting (Me from: Google Talk - My friends from: Google Talk, and Me from: AOL/AIM - My friends from: Google Talk), but videoconference and file sharing were not available.
I also tried Windows Live Messenger in iChat via Jabber intermediate, but it is not efficient and doesn't work for videoconference and file sharing.
So, which IM service combination I should use to chat with Windows users in order to be able to use videoconference and file sharing using such a great app like iChat?

A lapsed Trial or lapsed Paid for MobileMe account will not work in any fashion, as a Screen Name in iChat/AIM apps or as a Email. (Of course it is no longer an Valid Apple ID either).
Given that Google is a Jabber server iChat will Video (or Audio Only) Chat Jabber to Jabber.
With a Valid AIM name (AIM, MobileMe or @mac.com) then it is supposed to work to AIM on a PC
This tends to vary from person to person as to success.
From AIM version 6.5 AIM introduced a Send as Typing feature called "Real Time"
It does not work to iChat and in fact also has to be turned Off in the Buddy List at the AIM end for Video or Audio chats to work.
The AIM app also has to be allowed through the Windows Firewall as an Exception, preferably with UPnP enabled as well and UPnP enabled in their Router.
Trillian is a paid for App for PCs that provide an alternative.
Recently theri site offered 3 windows versions
The Pro version of verion 3.2 (known to work), a version 4 and a version 5 in beta. The version 3.2 used to have a free Text chat version and only the Pro version was needed to Video.
Until the site was reorganised the 3.2 version was "On Sale" at a reduced price.
It seems version 5 is now out of beta
They are still separating out a Pro version.
It is a multi-service client
There is also a Mac version although I have not tried it.
I am not sure what you mean by "Manage" your MSN Contacts.
How about using a MobileMe expired account screen name for using iChat with Windows-Google Talk users? Should I expect the same incompatibilities?
I have already addressed part of this. The fact the name will not work full stop.
However one way of reading this is that you are thing of linking AIM and Jabber (Google) Buddies in one Buddy List
Directly in iChat this cannot be done - unless you are the one with the Jabber Account and an AIM Transport set up.
You would be subject to the same Text Chat only restrictions.
It is a bit like the fact your phone line can be used for Fax, Telephone and DSL broadband. (in fact mine does TV as well)
You granny would not be able to talk to your Fax machine if that happened to answer the call.
Her Fax machine might be able to communicate with your computer if you had an active Fax app on there, and a dail-up modem active to answer.

Firewall and file sharing

I'm only using File Sharing on our file server running OS X Server 10.5.8. File Sharing is restricted to particular users in two computer labs. Is it essential in this setting to activate the firewall? At present I have it enabled. Does that affect the speed with which users can access file sharing?

I don't know, but I can guess -
1) It might be that Apple regards them as "essential services" - and thus does not block them under any circumstances if screen sharing and file sharing are enabled, or
2) it might be that the Firewall does not immediately register them as blocked, and thus things function anyway.

Can I create a wireless LAN and file sharing between two household Macs?

I've got an iMac G5 running 10.4.11 and an Intel iMac running 10.5 and was wondering if I create a wireless Local Area Network and file sharing between my two household Macs?

I have a network set up for my mom using an old blue iMac with an airport card as the base station. I'm using Tiger on the machine, but you should be able to do this on Leopard, too. She's 700 miles away, and I did it quite a while ago, but it seems I set everything up using the Airport Utility. At one point I think I had Internet Sharing on, too, but I don't remember if that's still on. Haven't needed to use file sharing on the network, but my G4 and her boyfriends MacPro happily use the network via Airport. I'm guessing you could share files that way. If it doesn't work, an Airport Express is a less expensive option for the router, at least cheaper than an Extreme.
