Printing chapter markers for DVD case?

Hey guys,
Unless I just can't find it, is there a way to list all the chapter breaks in a track and print them in a format that would fit nicely in a snapper case or jewel case? Wouldn't this be a great addition to this application?
I transfer people's videos to DVD for a living and need a utility that does this quickly - would anyone know of something for the Mac that can read the chapter breaks from a DVDSP track or can I export a chapter break list maybe??
Thanks all,
Brian

Wouldn't this be a great addition to this application?
Totally!
A year back I looked at how the chapter markers and times could be extracted from a FCP XML file using PHP. An app was developed (not by me, I hasten to add) which did just that, but not with PHP:
http://www.spherico.de/filmtools/XML2Text/index.html
This will give you a list of chapters to feed into DVDSP... which ought then to be the same as any list coming out! (Provided you used FCP in the first place, of course).
I don't think it works with DVDSP description files, but you could easily contact Andreas Kiel (the author) and see if that can be added in to future versions.
I've not used the later version of the software, but the alpha and beta stuff looked excellent. There is now a small charge for the product - €45, I believe.

  • Export chapter titles for DVD case/label

Does anyone know of a way to export the titles of iMovie or iDVD chapters so that they can easily be put into the design of the DVD case cover?
    Thanks for any information.

Chapter names are stored in the iMovie HD project file. They are also stored inside the reference movie that iMovie HD constantly updates for iDVD. (The reference movie for iDVD stored inside the project package. It is updated each time you save the project.)
If you have QuickTime Pro ($30, from Apple) you can use QuickTime Player to export the chapter track from that reference movie to a text file. One of the export options is to export just the chapter names. (There's another to export lots of other data about the chapter track, data you don't need.)
To export the chapter names to a text file, follow these steps:
    • In the Finder, Control-click on the iMovie HD project icon and choose "Show Package Contents" from the popUp menu that appears.
    • Locate the movie with the same name as your project inside the "iDVD" folder of the folder "Shared Movies".
    • Double-click on that movie to open it in QuickTime Player. The chapter names will appear in the popUp menu at the bottom right corner of the movie window.
    • Choose Window > Show Movie Properties. The window that opens lists all the tracks in the movie. One is "Chapter Track". Click on it.
    • At the left end of the Chapter Track is a checkbox. Click on it to turn it ON.
    • Click in the main movie window to bring it forward (activate it).
    • Choose File > Export. In the Save file window that opens, choose "Text to Text" from the top popUp menu at the bottom of the window.
    • Click on the "Options" button. In the window that opens, click on the radio button "Show Text Only". Click OK.
    • Save the text file. Open the file in TextEdit or your favorite text editor.

  • Chapter markers for dvd

I understand that chapter markers and a chapter menu are not available yet within FCPX. Are there simple but reliable work-arounds for creating a complete burning file from FCPX or via another app.? The intended programme is a multi-cam shoot over three evenings of a amateur pantomime/musical performance. it will run to a finished total length of about 150 minutes involving ten scenes, which is why a proper working chapter menu would be useful.

Have you tried Metadata Hootenanny? (weird name... but *free*)

It should be compatible with Compressor. Works with iDVD (and probably DVD SP).

  • The difference between chapter markers and dvd studio pro markers

Does anyone know what is the difference between chapter markers and dvd studio pro markers? I can not find anywhere on Google. Also in the tutorials I have seen, suggesting DVD Studio Pro markers, but it did not mention the chapter markers.
    Thanks,

"Adding Chapter and Compression Markers to Your Sequence
Once you have your edited sequence or program finished, you can add markers to the sequence for use on DVD. Markers are reference points you can place within clips or sequences that identify specific frames. There are two kinds of markers you can add that directly relate to authoring a DVD—chapter markers and compression markers.
    • Chapter markers allow DVD authoring applications to create a navigable chapter list for your exported QuickTime movie. Chapter markers force MPEG keyframes (known as I-frames) at their location, since the DVD specification requires an I-frame at each chapter point.
    • Compression markers identify areas of abrupt change and include two types: those that are automatically inserted by Final Cut Pro at all edit points, and those you manually place in the clip or sequence. Like chapter markers, compression markers force I-frames at their location, although in this case it is for better quality encoding, and they are not used to create a chapter list.
Note: When you export a QuickTime movie, you have an option to export various kinds of markers, including compression, chapter, or DVD Studio Pro markers. *When you choose to export DVD Studio Pro markers, Final Cut Pro actually exports chapter markers and all compression markers.* This includes compression markers you set manually, as well as ones created automatically by Final Cut Pro at edit and transition points."

  • Chapter Markers for Apple TV movies

After a search, I saw a brief discussion about using Handbrake to set chapter markers for Apple TV.
But is there a way to set chapters with iLife apps or QT Pro? With my home movies, the Apple TV remote button ">>" advances to each scene I captured with the Canon camcorder. At least it's not random, but dvd-style chapters would be nicer.
I realize QT removes chapters from iMovie projects, but I'm wondering if anyone has a workaround.

To create a chapter list in QT Pro:
    1. In a text editor or word processor, type your list of chapters and save the document as plain text.
    2. Make each item very short (preferably one word but no more than two or three words) and separate each item with a carriage return.
    3. In QuickTime Player, choose File > Open File, select the text file, and click Open.
    4. Choose File > Export. In the Export pop-up menu, choose "Text to Text." In the Use pop-up menu, choose "Text with Descriptors."
    5. Click Options. In the Text Export Settings dialog, select "Show Text, Descriptors, and Time"; select "Show time relative to start of Movie"; and set fractions of seconds to 1/30 (the default is 1/1000).
    6. Click OK, then click Save to create a text file with descriptors.
    7. Open the exported list in your text editor or word processor, and open the target movie in QuickTime Player.
    8. Choose Window > Show Movie Info.
    9. In QuickTime Player, drag the playhead on the timeline to find the first point in the movie where you want to begin a new chapter.
    10. Use the Right and Left Arrow keys to step forward or backward a frame at a time as needed. Note the current time in the Properties window.
    11. In the text file, find the first chapter title and change the timestamp just before that chapter title to the time you noted in the Properties window.
    12. The timestamp might now read, for example, [00:01:30.15], meaning that selecting the first chapter title will jump the viewer 1 minute, 30 seconds, and 15 frames into the movie.
    13. Repeat steps 9 through 11 until you've identified all the places in the movie that correspond to the chapter divisions and you've entered the proper timestamps in the text file.
    14. Change the last timestamp (the one after the last chapter title in the text file) to match the duration of the movie.
    15. Save the text file and import it into QuickTime Player.
    16. QuickTime creates a new movie with just a text track.
    17. Choose Edit > Select All, choose Edit > Copy, and close the movie.
    18. Click in the main movie, choose Edit > Select All, then choose Edit > "Add to Movie."
    19. QuickTime adds the text track to the movie.
    20. Choose Window > Show Movie Properties.
    21. In the Properties window, select the video or audio track you want to associate with the chapter track, and click Other Settings.
    22. Choose the main video or audio track from the Chapters pop-up menu.
    23. If you have a movie with alternate subtitle or sound tracks, you can create multiple chapter lists in different languages and set the appropriate subtitle or sound track as the owner of each chapter list. The chapter list will change to match the selected language.
    24. Select the text track, then select "Preload this track" (to make the chapter track load first).
    25. Deselect the new text track so that it doesn't display on top of the video.
    26. The new track will still function as a chapter track.
    27. Save the movie as a self-contained movie.
    28. You can now choose a chapter title from the pop-up menu to the right of the timeline.

  • Exporting QT with Chapter markers for iDVD

When I export a QT with Chapter markers for iDVD I get one movie file then a number of "AV" files - what are these and what do I do with them?
    workflow as follows:
1.Place chapter markers in timeline using mm the Add Chapter Markers
    2. set in/out points in timeline
    3. export quicktime movie
    4. select include Chapter Markers and include audio/video
    5. do NOT select recompress all frames
    6. DO select make self contained movie.
    7. Open exported movie file in Quicktime and chapter markers are present
    8. import ONLY the movie file to iDVD (NOT the AV files?) and answer yes to read all chapter markers
    9. burn seems to work fine but when I playback on DVD player there is digital stuttering in the picture
Any ideas on how to remedy the problem?
    thanks in advance
    patrick

The project is only 75 minutes. Do think it is the codec that iDVD is using that is causing the stutter. I assumed that it always encodes using MPG2.
Any idea what the AV files are?
When I export as an uncompressed DV stream the file is 15 GB.
When I export as uncompressed QT I get one file (movie) at 2.5 GB then
5 more "AV" files that are each 2.5 as well. So when I import the movie file without the AV files am I missing something?
Should I look into DVD Studio Pro? I have version 1.5 but I am fairly unfamiliar with it.

  • HOW TO ADD CHAPTER MARKERS FOR IDVD

how do you add chapter markers for iDVD import?

FCP does not have that capability. You can add chapter markers in Compressor, but that would be another recompression step, and you can dd them in GarageBand. Perhaps it might be best to add them in iDVD. Can you add them in iDVD?
It would be an excellent feature request to have them in FCP, though I'm not sure how they would implement it.

  • Chapter Markers for Apple TV Exports

    Hi
Can't seem to export chapter markers for my Apple TV video exports. They are green on the timeline, but don't show up on the final Apple TV m4v.
Does this just not work, or am I doing something stupid?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Mark

    Tom
So if you want any compression at all, deviate from Quicktime movie for any reason, you lose all your chapter marker ability. Seems pretty lame to me. Is that true for FCP, or just FCE?
Guess I will just have to use the fast forward on my remote.
BTW, got your book and it was very helpful.
    Thanks

  • Chapter Markers for Play All in DVD SP 4

I have a "Final Sequence" which consists of 6 sequences. I know I have to put the Ch. markers in the Final sequence to show up in DVD SP 4. The problem is that it's easier to put them into the individual sequences.
So, can I import all the sequences individually into DVDSP4 and make a button that will Play All 6 sequences just as if they were one long sequence?

this is quite common and easy. make one long sequence in fcp, set your chapter markers and end jump markers in preparation for a dvd with "Play All" and "Chapter Menu" menu selections. it'll require the use of stories in dvd sp but they're rather easy and navigation is quick and clean.

as this is a query for dvd studio pro, i'd advise you to search for "play all" in the dvd studio pro forum. lotsa answers.

i use handbreak to rip down dvds onto my ipod. is there a way to do chaptermarkers or a faster way to fastforward?
The iPod player currently ignores video chapter markers. As to a faster way to fastforward, how are you doing it now? I can fastworward through the entire Star Wars III movie in 5-6 seconds (depending on the amount of drag caused by the silicone case). This is faster than I can repeatedly click all of the chapter markers on my old DVD player and wait for it to catch up.

  • Folders and Chapter Markers for Movies Transferred to iToons

I would like to transfer my movies to iToons so I can stream them to my Apple TV to show them on my HD TV and have two questions.
    1. Can I create a folder to hold movies of a similar type?
    2. Several of my movies are composed of episodes and when I transferred them to a DVD I had chapter markers which made it convenient to locate a particular episode. I note that the commercial movies I stream to my TV allow you to move to a particular scene or chapter.  Is there a way to provide chapter markers when I share a movie I made to iToons?  All my movies are in a QT format as well as in a disk image of the DVD.

  • How to add chapter markers for each file in a folder?

    Hello,
I have several image folders with up to 700 images per. I would like to drag & drop them into the timeline but I want to be able to use the chapter/arrow button on the DVD player remote to scroll through them.....like a videoscrapbook, per se.
Is there a setting that will allow me to drop them into the time line and automatically generate a chapter marker for each image, that will be read on export to DVDSP? Surely, there is something like this built in that I just have not yet found; I cannot believe the only alternative is to manually add 700 chapter markers per folder. And do they always go into the timeline in alphabetical order? Can that be prevented or altered?
Also, doesn't it seem strange there is no single-button option (I'm presuming here, since I have not found one) for adding a chapter marker; the '~' button adds a generic marker but you must 'edit' it and click 'chapter marker' - very time-consuming --- or am I missing something here, too? If so please enlighten me! I've experimented a lot but no luck.
    Many thanks!
    jf

I thought there was a folder size limitation on DVDSP - these folders have digital family photos on them and they are jam-packed; 600, 700, whatever. And there are several of them. I guess I thought putting them in FCP was the only way to avoid the limitation - if there is one.
I'll try putting them straight into DVDSP and see what happens. Thanks!

  • TS1233 How do I get chapter markers for iDVD from Final Cut Pro X?

It seems like a tremendous short-coming that Final Cut Pro X doesn't allow for chapter markers that can be used in iDVD or DVD Pro. Surely there is some way to get used-defined markers from Final Cut Pro X or at least re-define the Final Cut Pro X markers in the DVD authoring applications. Does anyone know how to do this?

I have decided to say that my problem is solved by the work-a-rounds that have been submitted. I STILL don't like the fact tha Apple has decided that DVD's are a thing of the past and therefore (chapter) markers are of no use. That may be true is the publishing world of YouTube, Vimeo, etc. but it certainly NOT true for many of us advanced hobbyists that still like distribution on DVD's to our friends or a more localized (private) community -- especially to those who are not computer literate. If Apple wants to exclude us from their customer base, I suggest that base will become even smaller than their competitors who still have chapter markers in their products. I'll get off my soapbox now. . .

  • Don't see chapter markers in DVD SP

Hi everybody. I don't see chapter markers I expected to find in my DVD SP project. This was my first time placing chapter markers in FC and it was my understanding they would appear in the DVD SP timeline. Here's my workflow:
I exported a sequence from FC that had four chapter markers using 'quicktime movie'/current settings/not self contained. Opened in compressor and exported at best settings for 90-minute film for SD DVD.
I brought the clip into DVD SP and placed it into track one. No markers. Do I have to do something to make DVD SP find the markers? Have I made a mistake?

  • Re-setting chapter markers in DVD SP

I'm working with a timeline from FCP is already encoded with chapter markers and is quite long and I want to avoid encoding again as it is already in my DVD SP project. What I want to know is can I move a chpter marker accuratly and possibly use the arrow keys to nudge it over?
    G4 DP 1 GIG G4 laptop 1.25, MBP 2.0 1 GIG   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Jeff

    Jeff
In DVD SP there will be some limits on how you can move markers, they will not be frame accurate.
I usually use the key commands to jump back and forth between markers, then use inspector to nudge
You can also try to just export the Final Cut movie with the new marker positions and use that to set the markers in DVD SP then use the previously encoded video
Take a look here for this workaround that is good if markers do not show up and also will do what you need now
