Printing Colour Issues - colour management settings

Hi there
I've been having some serious printing problems recently when I print from InDesign CS5 and also from Acrobat when printing PDFs exported from InDesign.
All of the print out colours a wrong (such as Blacks printing as pink)
I have tried changing several settings, but nothing seems to be fixing it.
I've replaced all my inks and I can print fine when printing in other programs such as word, so its not an ink issue.
My printer is a Canon MP540
I'm using a Mac, on OS X Lion.
I think i'm using the default colour management settings, however could this possibly be the issue?- which settings might work?
I would REALLY APPRECIATE any help with this issue!
Many Thanks

if I look at the same image in the default 'Preview' on Mac, the
colours look different to what I see in PS
First, that would clearly indicate your image does not have an embedded profile, or Ps is being told to ignore the embedded profile — Ps is applying a different profile (or it may have been dinked around with in its Edit> Color Settings> More Options> Advanced Controls).
It is best for most people not to dink around with Color Settings> More Options...to get back a Default starting point, just select a preset like North American Prepress 2.
I know there are a million posts and articles on this complex subject
You only need one good article to grasp the basic issues.
The short answer is you are either missing something in scenario One, or you are hitting a bug.
When Photoshop setups a correct SourceSpace-to-PrintSpace Conversion the Epson will print your file faithfully if your Source Color is within print gamut and your Print Space reflects an accurate ICC profile to the specific printer-paper-ink you are printing to.
I would recommend testing with a known good file like the download Photodisc PDI test image (so bad files don't confuse the process)...

  • Remove previous Profile Manager settings

    Hi All!
I have a Lion OS X Server running at home for my couple of Macs. Despite many issues i am still trying to get it going.
One of the issues I have right now is with Profile Manager. When I initially started using it I thought it was a good idea to setup a printer for all users. I added the printer to a profile and it showed up on all the systems eventually.
Trouble is somehow it installed the printer in the system but no drivers so all I get is junk on the printer if somebody tries to print. To much hassle to solve so I removed the printer from the Profile Manager settings and manually installed the printer on each Mac.
Now here comes the trouble: Even though the printer is removed from the profiles in Profile Manager it keeps on reappearing on the Macs!!!!
I have tried everything I can think of but I no change. I think deleting a setting on the Profile Manager does not remove this setting from the client Macs. I have the supsicion the client Macs store somewhere the intial profile and reload it.
Anybody any ideas how to solve? Or does anybody know where the client Macs store the Profile Manager configuration profiles?

Mac's Profiles are stored in System Preferences > Profiles AFAIK.
I've not played too much with Profile Manager on Macs.. but have a look there?

  • PSE 8 colour management settings not remembered

In PSE 8, the colour management dialogue in File->Print->More Options->Color Management does not remember a Printer Profile that has been set.
I'm trying to help get a non-technical friend up and running with digital printing. He's bought PSE 8 and an Epson R2880, and wants to try printing with Ilford and Harman papers using the manufactuers ICC profiles. We've installed the profiles OK, but ...
On the friend's PC (running Vista Home Basic) if I set "PSE manages colors" and set a profile, then close the dialogue, then reopen the dialogue the handling has reverted to "Printer manages colors" and the profile drop-down is greyed-out (and remains so even after re-choosing "PSE manages colors").
I the installed the trial version of PSE 8 on my PC to try to replicate the problem. It's similar but not exactly the same ...
On my PC (running Win7 Ultimate) the Color Handling setting is retained, but no matter what ICC profile I choose, it always reverts to my original choice after closing and reopening the dialogue.

Finally got to the bottom of this,
Bizarrely, it appears that PSE needs to be run under an Administrator account to work properly.

  • Export to PDF and print same swatch colour - different variation of colour on printouts

I have multiple documents - they are all set up the same way.
I have 2 or 3 swatches in each of them -namely Rubine Red is giving me an issue - this is the same swatch in every document!

Here are my Colour Settings - the exact same in every document - I have also used the "Convert Profiles" and made sure all are the exact same.

When I export to PDF - the export looks great - and the coloured frames all look the exact same - and they give the exact same colour read outs in any profile I look at in the Preflight Manager

Can anyone help me with this?
The printer I am using is a XeroxColorQube using PS driver.
    Windows 7
    Adobe InDesign CS5.5
    Fully updated

I've also exported the document to IDML - and I've unzipped that folder. I've read the information for the colour - there's only 1 reference to Rubine Red and that's giving the same percentages as the InDesign file.
I don't know where the 2nd shade of pink is coming from.
But I suspect that it's from the print driver itself.
Also - just occured to me, I lost my PDF settings a while ago, InDesign crashed and the PDF defaults were missing - I dowloaded a copy of a set from someone on these forums through a google search.
But I no longer have PDF x4 export option - where can I retrieve these.
How can I restore the original PDF settings for InDesign?

  • Bridge/Photoshop Colour Issues

    Bridge/ Photoshop Colour Issues:
It appears that there are a few pictures that are noticeably dull, when I load them in Bridge and Photoshop.   Those same pictures are very vibrant when I look at them directly from the SD card or load them into Picassa.  I tried editing the picture, saving it in Photoshop, then opening it up in Picassa and it has the same dullness.  Since having this issue, I have updated the drivers on my Quadro graphics card, but I think it may be something to do with the way that I set up Adobe Bridge, because this is the first time I have imported a large batch of photos from Bridge.  However, I pretty much left everything as the standard settings in Bridge.  Any suggestions?
FYI - I just started using the Adobe Master Collection, with Win 7 Pro 64 and Huey Pro embedded on my laptop. My colour settings are Huey Pro on my laptop, SRGB in Photoshop and General Purpose for Bridge (I haven’t had this issue before and Huey Pro has been my colour settings on my laptop since I got Adobe).

However, when I switch the Colour Settings>Working Spaces>RGB to "Monitor RGB - Huey Pro" the problem is fixed.
That turns off color management in Photoshop, so yes, that would match other applications that aren't color managed at all. You're not fixing the problem, you're just hiding the symptom.
If you're certain the Photoshop version is wrong, that means your monitor profile is corrupt. A corrupt monitor profile only affects color managed software like Photoshop. Other applications don't use the monitor profile and never touch it.
If it's merely the fact that Photoshop is different, that's normal and all as it should be. With a valid monitor profile Photoshop is right and the others wrong.

  • IPrint app for iOS fails to print photos in colour

We are running the latest build of the iPrint Appliance (Version: 1.0.1.69 Patch 1) and cannot get the iPrint app for iOS to print photos in colour. I suspect that this is a problem with the internal renderer and JPG files. Printing a PDF, DOC or DOCX file which uses the External windows renderer prints in colour without any issues. Anyone know whether this is a known bug or how I can enable colour printing for a JPG file?
    Thanks

  • I have a 2 x spot colour file in Illustrator CC and need to save it as a PDF for printing in spot colour....

I have a 2 x spot colour file in Illustrator CC and need to save it as a PDF for printing in spot colour, which option do I choose in the 'save as' menu?
and how do I check it?
The overprint panel is open and I can turn off the cmyk ( there are no separations for the cmyk anyway)
Have looked at the tutorials which tell me to print as PDF7 but that utility is disabled and has been for ages.
it is a simple need but can find no simple information so think I must be missing something!
    Thanks in advance!

No magic required. You simply save it as PDF-X from AI. If the spot colors are based on correct swatches and tagged accordingly, they will appear as separate inks/ plates in the PDF, which you can verify in the ink manager in Acrobat. That's pretty much all there is to it and the print facility should handle this file correctly.

  • PDF printing in negative colours

This problem is similar to the below issue:-
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2213410?start=0&tstart=0
The fixes discussed in that thread do not work.
I have a user who is trying to print a PDF opened in Preview on a Mac Snow Leopard OS onto a Brother HL-5380DN printer. However some of the images contained in the PDF printout as negatives (ie black text on a white background prints as white text on a black background). when I try printing the same PDF document I get no problems. This only affects some images on the PDF. eg there are two graphs side-by-side in the PDF, see below image, the left hand image (which contains colour) prints out as a negative and the right hand image prints out ok.
Comparing the below page of the PDF on-screen on our 2 machines: on the user's Mac if I click on the left hand image then I select (or highlight) the image; on my Mac if I click the same image then nothing happens. Analysing further all images from this PDF that printed negative contained colour and could be selected on my user's Mac.
I don't know what is causing this issue. I think it's to do with the way Preview is setup but I can't see any differences. The user has different programs (like Adobe) installed, could these be causing some interference??
    Any help is greatfully received.
    Joe.

Yes I can print colours correctly using other channels for example printing the document directly from indesign is fine and I have tried printing some of illustrator files that i have used within the page and they print fine after being converted to a PDF.
I did use file-export pdf to save the file what other way is there, I looked under save as and it only allowed me to save the file as an indesign document, maybe I am missing something?

  • Color management settings for the best print output

Color Management while Printing has been one of the challenging areas which has been discussed a lot over user forums and has been a painful area in terms of clear understanding while taking print outputs.
Here is an easy-to-understand KB (Knowledge Base) article ‘Color management settings for the best print output’ to help you get the best from your printers using PSE and bridge that knowledge gap.
This article explains color management in Photoshop Elements, how to get better prints, and addresses some of the following issues like horizontal/vertical streaks in print output, too dark or too light print output, ICC profile problems and Color differences between prints from PSE and other applications.
    Thanks,

    Thanks Noel.
Yes have shared in PSE forum as well. But I usually drop such posts on PS General forum so community moderators as well as our power users who mostly use both PS or PSE or are aware about can communicate to their students, audiences etc.
The idea is to reach out the message to as many as folks via relevant forums. Most of my otehr posts have found mentioned only on PSE forum.
Thanks for the feedback Nice to hear such a great feedback within 5 mts of publishing

my photos are not printing right with adobe manages color but works when i use printer manages color. never had any issues untill a week ago.

We use CS6, yes we calibrate using x-rite. I have always had adobe manage colors when printing. This problem just occurred, all my settings are the same as they have been for years. The only thing we did lately is do an update to CS6. We thought it might be our printer but when we use the printer manages color it works fine, The problem with adobe manages color is it is not blending the light highlights like on top of the cheeks with the colors around the cheeks  and its putting a faint red between the two it just does not have a smooth transition. I printed a photo that I had printed 4 months ago with no issue, and this time it had the issue that I am dealing with now. Somehow the photo shop manages color is not getting the right info to my printer.
    I set paper type
    set quality
    no color adjustment
    set my profile

  • Colour issues LR3

I shoot ijn Camera RAW on a Canon 5D2 in LR3 and I'm having colour issues; skin tones are often purple/magenta tinted and very difficult to correct. I usually set the WB to Custom and shoot a grey card and set the picture style on the camera to Neutral (why does the WB affect RAW images anyway, I thought it only operated on the jpgs?)
On import, pics often look ok then resolve into higher contrast, garish colour versions which are less pleasing - have I set a preference incorrectly or am I missing something else?
    All help gratefully received

When you first import, you see the small embedded JPEG the camera generates. This matches what you see on the LCD but is based on having the camera do the conversions which you're not doing. LR therefore has to build it's own high quality previews but more importantly, that is based on it's current default settings using it's own engine. So just forget what you initially see, you'd not get that unless you set the camera for JPEG.
The key is setting up a custom default you prefer. You could pick a general DNG profile, move any of the sliders around etc and the, if you option click in Develop, the Reset button toggles to allow you to create a new default. From there you can of course adjust to taste. You'll still have to white balance and so forth but you should try to get a decent 'starting point' from Import on. For WB, might want to set the camera for Auto WB. Note this setting has no effect on your raw data! It's only a suggestion you can accept or alter. With Auto WB, you'll probably find more images come in looking closer to what you want then say forcing Daylight (which would look butt ugly IF those images were shot under Tungsten). Auto IS NOT PERECT by a long shot but since the setting doesn't affect the data, might as well try for something that gets you in the ball park.
Using any card to WB (and you should use a white, not gray card) again is often just another starting point. You seasson to taste using Tint/Temp. And of course, if you shot a scene at sunset and did this, you'd kill the color expected at that time of day. Bottom line is, when you capture raw, the WB can be anything you wish, anything you think looks good. That would not be the case with a JPEG. If you set it, you're then kind of stuck with that rendering.
Lastly, creating one or two custom DNG camera profiles can work wonders. Check out the X-rite Passport product. You'll end up with a really great target for balancing as well.

  • Black and white printing when no colour

Is there a way of overcoming this on this machine - never had this problem before although judging by this thread it is not uncommon. I am printing text documents - why on earth would it need magenta to work? So far it has been allowing me to print in black and white but now it says magenta depleted - even though I haven't printed anythig in colour!

    Hi @JoannaJ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I appreciate your frustration. However, this particular printer uses some color inks even when printing in black only. If you did run out of color and kept printing black only, you will cause problems with the printhead. FYI,HERE is the user guide to your printer, see page 98. I've also linked page yield information HERE.

  • LR4 Colour issues

When I export my images from LR4 to Flickr (or anywhere else on the web) they always appear a bit pinker than in LR. I know LR4 develops in ProPhoto by default and, as is best practice for the web, I always export in sRGB for the web. I don't want to have to 'soft proof' every single photo I take (such a hassle), and I'm guessing this is a discrepency between colour profiles. SO, is there any way I can change LR4 so that I can develop all my images in sRGB instead of proPhoto, as I used to in LR3? There was never a discrepency when I was editing in sRGB in LR3. This has only been an issue since upgrade and it really bugs me!
Also ~ from the help files proPhoto seems to assume an ability to callibrate your monitor, but not everyone has the means to do this ~ l it's a bit unfair. My monitor has an autocalibration tool and it's colours are pretty accurate, but there is no profiling 'file' that I could use for LR to read & allign itself with.

I seem to remember being able to CHANGE the develop module in LR3 so that I was working in sRGB.  And when I was working in LR3, on the SAME monitor I never had colour issues between develop and export to Flickr.
If it's not the profiling, what else is it that's changed?
Not everybody has the means to buy calibration equipment. It's #1 on my wish list and I am serious about my photography, but I work on a very low budget and can only spend as I earn! I don't buy lenses. I bought one 35mm and that's me ~ everything else it's out of budget right now. A decent calibrator does not come cheap and I see no point buying a cheap one that probably won't be much better than the auto that's already built into my screen!
I just want to also say ~ when my pictures are professionally printed the colour matching seems fine ~ so I don't actually believe I have a serious monitor calibration issue.

  • Confusing Colour Issues with 3 camera shoot. Please help

    Hey Everybody,
I have had to re-register, so this looks like my first post!
There is a colour issue which is seriously baffling us, we shot a fighting event with a 3 camera shoot. 3 Days, and on all 3 days the cameras seem to have produced different colour outputs dispite being on the same setting. Can anybody shed any light on how to match the colours here. All settings on the cameras were the same, so we are surprised that the footage has come out differently. The following day the footage from all 3 cameras were indentical. However this is the footage produced from the first shoot
We have tried bightness/contrast, levels, fast colour correction, Colour Balance and CB_HLS and still can't get the footage to match.
While it would appear there might be a slight hint of over exposure when we take the brightness right down, there is hardly any highspots.
If there is no solution for us to do, is there anybody who we could send a short clip, have them correct it and we can duplicate to the rest of the shots? If so what kind of expense do you think that would incur?
    Thanks in advance

its important to use the same exact cameras on multi camera shoots. also important to take color meter and see what the lights give you. sodium vapor and tungsten and flourescent all need different " color correction" gels to make them equal 32k or 56k .. and its not just orange and blue correction ...its also green and magenta etc...
professionally , you cant do all that at the " lens " with cc filters..you need to actually get to the lights physically ( with scissor lifts or cranes ( manlifts ) and gel the lights too ).
Once you have your lights corrected and ready to shoot...all cameras need to shoot "color swatches - usually Kodak .. with a single light source that equals what your camera is set to ( color temp )...and that is used to get your balance correct in post.
That said it sounds like you are screwed...
To have someone try to correct that professionally would cost more than you can afford, or you would have used that " money " to correct your color etc in the beginning... in other words, if you could afford to send everything to a pro lab and try color correcting all that stuff, you wouldnt have this problem to begin with IMO.
    My suggestion:
Since wrestling is a gritty sport and " manly " and full of emotion that is basically " tough " and " hard " ....trash the color altogether and make everything black and white... maybe increase your contrast a tiny bit ...or maybe add a slight " tone " to it....( not sepia which looks just " old " , but maybe slight blue tint ? ) ...something to make it look as gritty and hard as you can...
Then tell client you did it on purpose !  Is part of your concept to begin with... wow them with your creativity !

    Please help...
my mac is only printing in one colour - blue, and black. My partner's dyslexia tutor changed some settings "somewhere" as the black ink was running low and my partner had his finals coming up and didn't have time to get a new black cartridge. So his coursework printed in blue, to save black ink, but we can't get it back to normal to print any photo's etc. I remember seeing a colour wheel but don't know anymore ......

Might have been an idea to tell us what printer this is.
