Printing correctly in Aperture and too dark in everything else.

New to photography and purchased LightRoom 2 on a friends recommendation. I really like the program. However, no matter what I tried it printed too dark. All sorts of profiles, printer driver color mangement yes/no and while I could get just a slight raise in brightness and color, it was no where near acceptable.
Did a trial on Elements and Aperture. Elements also printed dark which shouldn't be surprising both Adobe.
Last and what proved to be far from least is Aperture. While it may not have the features of the Adobe gear at least it prints right. I can now get a very nice print with my Epson 4880 with one of the built in profiles (as it should be in my opinion).
I understand the need for a proper ICC profile for best results but it seems to me you should at least get a reasonable foundation to work with. I just could not get good color saturation or proper brightness level no matter what I did. From what I read on the net I'm not the only one. Interesting how Adobe must work extremely well with millions of other Macs and PC's but not mine.

I'm no expert in color management
An expert in colour management engineeri can fail in configuring any two ICC-enabled applications for compatible assumptions. Understanding the architecture is one thing and understanding the current conditions for configuration are another.
In such situations as this, the best bet is to ask the Apple ColorSync Users List.

Any way around this or is this something apple needs to fix?

    OK, videos!

Have you tried using Quicktime Player 7?
Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded.

Snow Leopard update 10.6.4 included an update to 7.6.6 (if installed). You can install it from the above link even though it says for 10.6.3. It's the same version of QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
Only QuickTime Player 7.6.3 or 7.6.6 can be updated to "Pro".

  • Photo correction: too light and too dark

I have imported ~ 2,000 photos into Lightroom 5.6.  The files are PNG format from MS Picture It.  Some photos are too light and some are too dark.
I tried synchronizing the metadata thinking this would make the photos more alike.  Some are improved, but I still have many that are too light or too dark.
Short of editing each photo, is there an easy way to make the photos more uniform in brightness.
    Thanks

Try using Quick Develop in the Library where the adjustments are relative.
For example the inner pair of arrows for highlights or whites adds or subtracts in increments of 5 and the outer arrows in increments of 20. You can see the changes in the history panel by then going into Develop.
So rather than using sync in the Develop module which applies the same absolute setting to every image the changes in quick develop will be relative to the original condition of the photo.
Try experimenting by selecting a batch of thumbnails and applying Quick Develop settings.
Alternatively sort your images into batches using collections where the original lighting is broadly similar. Then select all (Ctrl+A) in each collection and apply the adjustments to each batch, until you get everything broadly similar.

  • Printer Setup for Aperture and Epson R1800

After installing the upgrade to 1.5, something went wrong with my printer setup for both my R1800 and my PictureMate Deluxe.
    I've done the following:
    Reset the printer system.
    Reinstalled the Drivers
Attempted to Print from Aperture using about 30 + combinations of settings.
I'm still getting colors that are off and overall dark photos.
    Best Setting appears to be
    Printer Settings
    Print Settings
Media Type: Premium Glossy Photo Paper
    Color: Color
Mode: Advanced (Photo, High Speed, Finest Detail, Off)
    Color Management
    Off (No Color Adjustment)
    ColorSync Profile: SPR1800 PrmGlsy Photo.icc
    Black Point Compensation = Checked
    Gamma 1.10
The resulting pictures appear to be about 1 f-stop or so underexposed and the colors are off (I'm color blind, so I can't say exactly how). I know that it is the setup of the printer settings. If I print the same pictures from Nikon Capture on my Windows computer, the print is perfect. I prefer to use Aperture for my photo work.
Epson doesn't have Aperture and doesn't understand all of the settings. The Apple Care support tech stated that he is not qualified to answer and said to call back when the Aperture team is working. I've got a ton of Christmas gifts to print out!
    Assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -William

    william:
you don't state in your original posting whether or not you've calibrated your monitors, especially to a 2.2 Gamma. in order to get the most accurate screen->print matching you have to hardware calibrate your monitors. this is by far the single most significant improvement i've made in my workflow. prior to calibration my monitors were set to a gamma of 1.8 which is much brighter than 2.2 and this causes you to NOT correct your images with the additional exposure required for proper printing. my prints were always too dark prior to calibration.
the spyder 2 from color vision is an excellent choice.

  • Printing from photoshop, colors seem too dark

We are printing photos and/or scans of my wife's paintings as well as some of her photography.  Using a canon ip4820 and a Red river satin paper (or canvas paper) and the corresponding recommendation from Red river including their icc profile for the specific paper.  While the color profile helped slightly, we still cna't seem to get true reproduction.  I realize monitor calibration and other things will effect the way we see the photo, but we've viewed the photos on various screens and on the canon t2i lcd screen as well as comparing to the original painting and the prints always look too dark and in some cases the yellows come out too orange.  This is all with new canon ink and a new printer.  We always have to brighten the images but not being photoshop pros we are not sure if that is the correct thing to do or if there is some other correction or maybe its just that the ip4820 isn't cable of reproduction to that level.
Are there some settings we are missing?
    thanks for any ideas.

    3 suggestions:
Be sure that you have the latest drivers for your printer
Have the printer manage colors, not Elements. Certainly not both!
Reduce the brightness settings on your monitor, esp. while enhancing with PSE

  • Printing differences between Aperture and PS

I have been using Aperture for almost two years, but I have never been happy with the results I get when making inkjet prints. I have custom built profiles, calibrated monitor, all goo d color management etc., however I get very different prints from the same files when print from Aperture that I do with Photoshop or Lightroom. Why would Aperture interpret the same profiles differently? And what rendering intent is it using? I built some new profiles yesterday with the XRite ColorMunki and the prints made with PS are an excellent match to the monitor. Some of the darker, more saturated blues in the Aperture printed image go bright purple. Aperture prints a bit lighter than the monitor as well. I am printing from the same saved Tif file that was processed in Aperture, and sending it directly to PS out of Aperture.
    Thanks
    Peter

Assuming your settings in the Aperture print dialog are what they should be - If you are not sure there are plenty of topics on that, the issue could be the following.
To make a long story short at some point the combination of Leopard, Aperture 2, Tiger printer drivers and printing preferences seem to cause really horrible Aperture printing issues. The only sane procedure I have used and recommend to make it right again are:
Delete all the printers from system preferences.
Make sure that you download and install the latest leopard printer drivers (again).
Trash all of your old Aperture preferences.
Put all of your correct preferences back in to the print dialog.
    Try again.

  • Print quality with Aperture and Epson RX580

    Hi all,
I feel like I've tried everything, but I just can't get Aperture (the latest version with all the updates) to print from my MacBook Pro on my Epson photo printer the way I could from other photo software on my old PCs.  On my old PCs, when I would print a photo from Canon DPP or Capture One, or even the Windows photo management software, I get a rich menu of dialogue boxes for the Epson printer offering different qualities of prints, different papers to choose from, "photo enhancement," and lots of other options.  Prints came out sharp, colorful, and just great.
When I print from Aperture, I get none of these options (I get color management and resolution, and that's about it).
When I print from Aperture, I get vertical lines in the prints, visible dots, and pixellation.  So what I do is email the "exported" versions to my daughter's PC laptop and print from there -- and get good results.  Boy, that's a pain.
Surely Aperture can do better than this.  So what am I missing?  Any ideas for what I should be doing?
    Thank you.

Canon MP990 and Macbook pro (os X snow lep.. and Lion) - Lines in prints in Aperture.
While a bit vague I got there and found the distinction between the printer driver managing it and the printer managing the photo quality causing the issues.
I could only transfer the pic's to iphoto and print for ( admitedly about the same time of more than a year).
    The FIX
in the first window after selecting print scroll down to rendering and select printer managed.
Select all the other settings you need then select print on the right bottom of this window.
This next dialogue box at the bottom is a show details button then a new set of menus are present (initial is layout in a pull down menu)  select color matching then automatic ( you can change this but it worked so if it is not broken I'll play later ).
You should have clear prints with no lines...

  • Problem with inconsistent print dialogue box/Aperture and Elements?

I just purchased an Epson r1900. In Aperture everything is great! I can pull up icc profiles and the new print dialogue box features all the epson papers (glossy, Matte, Art, CD) in menus with submenus. But in Photoshop Elements 6, I get an old dialogue box which only shows the old Epson papers-Photo. Photo glossy, matte. There is no way, for instance, to choose Velvet art-and that is what I am using. It is driving me nuts. I have thrown out preferences, updated drivers, updated applications, fixed permissions...you name it. same thing in Apple Pages. Why am I not seeing the same dialogue box? Is this not OS controlled? The R1900 is always chosen. ( I do have an older printer as well, but definitely not selected.
    any guidance appreciated!
    thanks
    Nancie

I have the same problem since I installed Snow Leopard. I have upgraded to the newest canon driver for my Canon Pixma IP5200 printer. Calibrating seems to no longer have a reliable impact on my prints. Also Aperture under SL will not save my preset information for media type, paper source or print quality in the print settings.
I am assuming this is a bug related to SL and hopefully will be addressed soon... It is very frustrating as I have waisted a lot of time ink and photo paper in the days since I have moved up to SL
When will we see a fix?

  • IGlasses for Snow Leopard - Too dark? Anyone else?

I'm finding the new iGlasses upgrade for Snow Leopard way too dark. It's useless and I had to uninstall it. Anyone else having this problem, or found a fix?

    Umm,
    That does seem odd.
For a long while now the Ecamm Stuff has been very reliable.
However the range of Macs that their products will now work with has become very large which may mean some configurations have been missed.
I am using iGlasses on a G4/1Ghz Dual Processor with a UVC compliant cam.
I have created a Daytime and Night time Preset for myself as the lighting here changes dramatically from day to night.

  • Prints ordered through iphoto are too dark

I ordered some prints through iphoto and they came back very dark and washed out. The photos are in the sRGB colorspace and my monitor is calibrated with the spyderpro2. When I print locally to my 3 year old HP printer they look exactly as they should on the screen.
In these forums, users have been very pleased with the color matching provided by apple print services so I know that the quality is possible.
Is there something that I am missing?
    Thanks in advance.

  • I need to reset the monitor profile. It is being overiden and too dark

Something is overiding the color profile upon start up. After migrating files from one macbook pro to another, the same corrupted startup monitor profile is making the screen dark, on one user profile. The other admin profiles are fine.
I bought a new computer because I thought the monitor was going bad. But now it appears that it is a startup color profile hidden somewhere. I have deleted the Color LCD-4272040.icc profile many times. It keeps coming back on the corrupted user library, so this file is generated globally with every log in..
Where is this overiding file? it needs to get trashed.

I need to add, this "startup "profile" is placing the overall color ramp in 'front" of the calibration, therefore you can not set the monitor back to a factory "no profile" setting. producing a new color profile does not work. VERY frustrating

  • Can't print from Word or Adobe...but everything else works just fine

I get error message "opening raster file failed!"
I have tried different printers and none work. Any suggestions?

Could there be a newer or upgraded printer driver available for your
print hardware, from the printer manufacturer's support site, or maybe
    via Apple Support downloads?
The error message relates to other users with printer issues among
other brands of printers; so it may be your print drivers are at fault.
If the driver installer disc from the manufacturer has its own un-install
process, use that to remove the existing driver before reinstalling an-
other one. There also may be a print driver option from Gimp online.
    Good luck & happy computing!
