Printing dimensional accuracy

How accurate are printed dimensions supposed to be?
I encountered a problem printing a page of labels from WORD 2011. Printer is C4280 all in one. Using an iMac running 10.8.5 with all the latest updates.
By the time I get to the bottom of the sheet of labels (1" high each) the printing has slowly shifted upwards so that the first line of the label is starting to fall on the previous label. I'm using the right Avery template for the label.
Looking at the print layout of the WORD label document being printed it seems OK - i.e it's laid out on the page correctly against the ruler on the screen.
I tried printing, from Graphic Converter, a vertical line 10" long and low and behold it prints out 9 and 7/8",!  Thisis similar to what is happening with the labels.
I then tried to use the copy function on the printer/scanner and a 10 inch long dimension is rendered about a 1/8 inch short!
So.. it looks like there's no inherent problem in the Mac/HP interface but is a problem in teh accuracy in the drive on the printer. Is this a degredation in the printer? I was not aware of this problem before, but it could have been ther all along I suppose.
Do I neeed a new printer or is this what I shoud expect?

Hi MrKenny,
Welcome to the HP forums!
I see you have some questions about your Photosmart C4280 and the possible limitations it has on your printing. I will certainly do my best to work through these questions with you
I will start off by saying, I believe this may be a hardware limitation (as it happened on a Copy as well) but I am more than willing to make some suggestions to see if we can find anything different!
If the printer isn't already, I'd like you to plug it directly to a wall outlet for it's power source. Even the best surge protector can limit the power a machine gets so we just want to make sure the printer is getting all the power it needs to function as it should.
If that doesn't seem to change anything, please make sure you have the latest printer driver update from Apple/HP and then, if you have the HP Utility (I believe it should come with the update but if not, that's fine just let me know) I'd like you to Align the printer through the Utility.
Please let me know how things go if you can

  • OfficeJet 4500 will not print two sided over network

    I'm running on Windows 7 with an OfficeJet 4500 G510n-z over WiFi.  Printer works great except that it will not print two sided.  We've used a non-WiFi 4500 to print two sided before.  With the new printer the first pages print and the pop-up shows on the laptop (prompt to flip paper over) but nothing happens.  The second pages never print.
    I've run all of the HP print and network diagnostics.  Everything appears to be OK.

    The solution below was found on the sticky post at the top of this board "Fixes and Workarounds from HP"
    I think the patch below only applies if you have the original printer software installed, I assume this issue was fixed in later versions of the printer software, Read the patch information carefully.

  • How do you print multiple photos per page in LANDSCAPE using iPhoto ?

    I am very experienced using iPhoto and like it but it has a very limited print program that I find frustrating.
    The simple task of turning the paper to landscape mode does not appear to be one of the options when you wish to print more than one photo per page.
    Even with a single photo selected there is no "landscape" mode, but rather you have to define the print dimensionally to be 11" wide x 8" tall.
    Even that option however, goes away when you select the "custom picture arrangement" to get more than one picture per page.
    Has anyone figured this out - I love apples products but this omission is a pain - HELP

    First send a feature request to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/.
    A workaround, if you have the iWork suite of apps, is to create a landscape canvas in Pages or any image editor that supports layers, drag the two photos onto it, resize as needed and print.

  • How to improve or get the right colours for my printer

    Hey guys, I have just used an EyeOne to configurate the right colours of my screen. Just that when I use Photoshop or I watch at the pictures, I want to see them as they really are. I've done it, but now I have the second problem. It works for sending pictures, for sending them to print... But my printer(an Epson) prints them too dark and too redish.... But my screen is just perfect.
    Do you know how can I manage to configurate the way to change the colours of my printer with some app or some configurator??
    Thank you very much for your answers.

    Your EyeOne has calibrated the display, but you will also need print profiles.
    First, without a printer profile, you will get the most accurate print by using the printer manufacturers, in you case Epson, inks and papers.
    You can use alternative, but quality inks, and alternative quality papers. Wether using these or Epsons, you will need a print profile.
    The print profile will usually make a much larger difference than just calibrating your display.You will need a different profile for each paper and ink combination you use. Some paper manufacturers supply downloadable profiles, but these will only be accurate if all of the Epson printers of your model have identical characteristics, this is rare, hence the need for custom profiles. Some paper manufacturers will supply you with a custom profile free, or you simply download the target image, print following their instructions precisley and post the printed target to them for a custom profile. They then email the profile back to you. There are also commercial companies that do this to. Another option is to purchase a calibrator that profiles your display and printer, but that tends to be expensive. Look here at various options here from just one of many suppliers http://spyder.datacolor.com/products.php.
    Look here for options available from a typical paper supplier in the UK. http://www.permajet.com/30/ICC_Profiles.html. Then read these sections relating to the previous link.
    What are ICC Profiles and why do I need them? CLICK HERE
    What is the difference between a GENERIC and a CUSTOM ICC Profile? CLICK HERE
    That should give you and idea of what needs undertaking for print colour accuracy.

  • Officejet 4500 skips pages or parts of pages.

    My Officejet 4500 worked great for about 6 months, but in the last few days it has started to only print the first few lines or at random portions of pages. Fiddling with the default printer setting helps sometimes for a while, but then it acts up again. Fooling with spooler settings also works (or seems to work) temporarily. Wasting paper, ink and time! I wonder if it  might be a java update problem -- I work with finicky niche software that doesn't like Java updates, so I skip them.

  • Printing a double to accuracy of 2 decimal places

    Hi,
    I have a double value and I want to print it to an accuracy of 2 decimal places. Is there any way to do this. I tried using the DecimalFormat by
    doing the following
    String str = Double.toString(value);
    DecimalFormat dec = new DecimalFormat(str);
    dec.setMaximumFractionDigits(2);
    String res = dec.toString();But this doesn't seem to work. I am using java 1.4.
    Thanks

    You can use DecimalFormat but like this:
            double value = 1.345678d;
            System.out.println(value);
            DecimalFormat dec = new DecimalFormat("0.00");
            String result = dec.format(value);
            System.out.println(result);Or you can use a BigDecimal where you can specify the most appropriate rounding method:
            BigDecimal bd = new BigDecimal(value);
            bd = bd.setScale(2, BigDecimal.ROUND_HALF_UP);
            System.out.println(bd.toString());HTH,
    Christian

  • Accuracy of drawLine location on the printer

    As I understand it, Graphics2D uses floating point line widths and one can control the width quite accurately making accuracy in line width as good as the resolution a modern printer.
    Also as I understand it, when one draws a line from one point to another, the endpoints are located as accurately as integers of 72nds of an inch. It seems to me that this less accuracy would make for an accuracy inconsistency. Also there would be two integerizations, one to 72nds, and another to printer resolution, say 300ths of an inch. Or to screen resolution of 96ths of an inch. I hope I am wrong, and that I can place the endpoints of a line more accurately that the integer arguments of drawLine in 72nds of an inch on the printer. Please educate me. What am I missing?

    You can't change it within your computer's iTunes itself, that will use your main drive. You could see if turingtest2's instuctions on this post work : https://discussions.apple.com/message/22265640#22265640

  • Printing accuracy help

    A little background first, I've printed 1000's of pictures on many different printers, calibrated monitors and worked with PS  for years. So I have a lot of experience. When I have a issue I usually work it by googling and trial and error. However, when it comes to ICC profiles, color space, etc., I'm still not as good as I should be........
    I created a painting in Sketchbook Pro. I moved it to PS6 to print it. ( it looked good in Photoshop ) The printed image didn't match my painting as viewed in Sketchbook or PS6 and they both looked the same.  It was harsh, colors didn't blend together and looked very crude. I was at a complete loss. I'm using an Epson 4880 with Enhanced Matte Paper and letting Photoshop manage the colors. I did a soft proof using the paper's profile, calibrated my monitor, changed printer cartridges and still after each adjustment  it looked harsh.  I then decided to print it to my Epson 4880 directly from Sketchbook instead, with all the same settings as in PS6 and it came out perfect, just has I hoped. My question is what I'm I missing in Photoshop that I still need to learn so I don't have to stumble around trying to match my image to print. Obviously my printer is working fine when paired with Sketchbook but the communication between my printer and PS6 is screwed up somewhere. I would appreciate any and all advice. Thanks

    Thanks for your reply. The site was down in my area last night or I would have responded earlier. At any rate, here are the two screens I go through to print my image. I didn't want to offend anyone so I strategically  blurred the image. However I still think you can tell how smoothly the colors blend and that the transitions in her back are not obvious. For some reason PS6 is distorting the transitions. The settings you see below are the same for printing out of PS6 or Sketchbook Pro.
    Update:  I've noticed that the printed images from PS6 have gotten better as I have reacted to the other post here and kept trying to make sure everything was set correctly, but still my best effort isn't as smooth as the one printed from Sketchbook Pro.
    Thanks

  • V10 does not PRINT at all....

    I just want to scream, really.....
    I'm in the process of creating new components in Ultiboard and need to verify that sizing and orientation. I did the usual by selecting all the mech layers, drill layer, and the top silk, when I click preview, the image looks exactly as it should.....I hit print, it send the data to my printer.....and what comes out is a nice clean white sheet of paper.......thats it.....nothing else.
    I try several times...no dice
    I try to add every single layer.....still nice virgin white sheet of paper comes out.
    I immediately run a "print test page" from windows xp....it comes out exactly as Microsoft coded it.....nothing wrong with the printer.
    Try to do a direct print from the icon ribbon....still same output.......NOTHING.
    I would classify this as a critical to severe error.
    Anyone seeing this?

    I export as .DXF format files and open and print them from my CAD software, so I never had occasion to try a direct print.  So, as an experiment, I did an electronic print of the silkscreen layer on a small board design of mine, using Acrobat's PDF printer.  I got a result, but noticed it took a long, long time.  It was also missing the arcs I have in the outline of a selector switch.  Not cool.
    I will speculate the lengthy generating time results from something I noticed with the .DXF format files.  That is, arcs are piece-wise approximations made up of line segments, while solids, including round pads, are clusters of filled polygons.  Normally, .DXF, as currently exported from a number of CAD programs, makes arcs and circles by employing center point location and radius commands, and will fill a defined closed circle.  That the exported board files are not done this way clutters the result with large numbers of little elements, making them large for their content and slow to render in CAD software.  It is an area where a little sophistication would go a long way toward improving the portability of the output.
    It may be that your printer is having trouble with the bulk of the clutter?  If it has a driver that doesn't play nicely with the spooler, that could also explain it?
    As to checking dimensions, I would use the tools in Ultiboard.  Set the working layer to silkscreen and use the Place|Dimensions command.  Just don't set the dimension down on the layout after you have it; cancel it instead.  Otherwise, you can place the dimension, then use Undo to get rid of it.  I've have had no problems with the accuracy of the sizes being as dimensioned.  I have, however, seen printers that are a bit off when it comes to keeping X and Y well matched, so I consider them a less reliable check of dimensions.  Incidentally, to do this, you will probably want to right click in the board window with nothing selected, then pick Properties from the flyout menu.  Click on the Grid & units tab and set the visible grid and also the component, copper, and via grid steps to a small size, like 0.001" or even 0.0005" to make it easier to zoom in and pick out small dimensional differences.

    Antilog Calculator
    Antilog Calculator commonly called as Anti Log or Inverse Log calculator, is an online tool used to calculate Inverse Log values with respect to the base values
    AntiLog or Inverse Logarithm
    The anti-log is simply the inverse log calculation. Namely, if you know the logarithm of a number, you can compute the value of the number itself by taking the antilog. The anti logarithm is defined as
    y = antilog x = 10x
    For example, if you want to compute the antilogarithm of 3.5. Clearly, since 3.5 is a number between 3 and 4, the antilogarithm will result in some number between 1000 and 10,000. If more accuracy is required, this online anti-log calculator can help you out find out the exact value of the given input. Since Log and antilog are inverse functions, then this means that
    10Log x = x, and Log 10x = x
    You can use this information to modify a formula to solve for different desired quantities. As a general rule, logarithm or anti log functions operate on numbers that are unit less

    Have a very recent Lenovo Ideapad Laptop running Windows 8.1. Connected via USB port to HP LaserJet Pro CM1415 frw Color MFP Printer. Was able to print fine nearly 2 weeks ago, but something recently happened - either a new windows or office 2013 update
    or perhaps I blew away a certain file by mistake. I can see the printer installed but cannot print to it from anything (Word, Notepad, IE, Firefox etc.). The one thing to note is that usually when I plug or unplug a USB related device, Windows 8.1 recognizes
    this and makes a certain chime noise, but with the printer USB cable it never makes that noise - making me think that it never fully recognizes the printer. Also when I select the printer (from within the control panel) and right click for properties (via

  • How can I print address labels from numbers spread sheet

    How can I print address labels from numbers spread sheet

    CAB,
    The 5163 template has the following dimensional specs:
    Dimensions & Info
    Length: 4.00000"          Height: 2.00000"
    Top Margin: 0.50000"          Bottom Margin: 0.50000"
    Left Margin: 0.18000"          Right Margin: 0.18000"
    Hor. Spacing (gutter): 0.14000"          Vert. Spacing (gutter): 0.00000"
    Intended Use: Mailing Labels, Shipping Labels, Address Labels
    There's a great vendor site with this data readily available, better than the Avery site in my opinion. But, you can get the same info in the Contacts Print dialog pane.
    You can grab a template matching these dimensions from that vendor site, Copy the table after opening the Word Template in Pages and drop the into a blank Numbers Sheet.
    I found that Sheet side margins of 0.15" worked better than 0.18. For some reason the table wanted to flow to the next page to the right with 0.18". Turning off the Headers and Footers and setting Top and Bottom Margins to 0.5" worked well. These adjustments are made in the Sheets Inspector.
    So, that will put the template you specified into a Numbers document and you can print labels properly aligned from there. Since your problem statement is a bit lacking in detail, that's all I can offer you at this point.

  • Few Questions 'bout Printing in Lab Color

    I'm a little confused about how LAB color works. I have a document thats currently in CYMK color mode, and I'm having difficulty finding satisfactory colors. I was advised elsewhere to abandon CYMK. I therefore want to convert my image into to LAB color mode. I've read that converting from one color mode to another can cause layers to look funny, however I need to retain some of my layers... Do you guys typically have problems with this? In retrospect I should have STARTED in Lab... Seems that converting from CYMK to LAB wouldn't be as problematic as converting from LAB to CYMK...
    The key question is this: will my printer (Epson R800) even be able to print in LAB mode? I thought yes, or at least closely... because it has much more than CYMK to work with... it has these cartridges:
    #1 Blue UltraChrome Hi-Gloss Ink Cartridge T054920
    #2 Cyan UltraChrome Hi-Gloss Ink Cartridge T054220
    #3 Gloss Optimizer UltraChrome Hi-Gloss Cartridge T054020
    #4 Magenta UltraChrome Hi-Gloss Ink Cartridge T054320
    #5 Matte Black UltraChrome Hi-Gloss Ink Cartridge T054820
    #6 Photo Black UltraChrome Hi-Gloss Ink Cartridge T054120
    #7 Red UltraChrome Hi-Gloss Ink Cartridge T054720
    #8 Yellow UltraChrome Hi-Gloss Ink Cartridge
    Finally, in the print screen menu should I be
    "letting photoshop manage colors" or letting "printer manage colors"? Do you guys have any other tips on how to tweak printer/photoshop settings/preferences to maximize the accuracy of my colors? Would I possibly be better off just using RGB?
    I know my questions are conveyed in a slightly confusing manner, so thank you for your patience reading through them. I really appreciate any insight you guys can give me.
    Thanks,
    Rich

    You can't actually print in Lab mode, although it can be great for certain corrective moves. You have to print in either RGB or CMYK. If you are using the Epson driver for your printer, the print is seen as if it were an RGB device, even though it uses CcMmY and black inks.
    To get better color accuracy, you need both a hardware calibrated monitor - so you know that what you see is accurate - and good custom printer profiles, so that the colors are properly converted to the color space of the printer. There is a lot of information both in these Adobe forums and on the web in general about color management and the proper use of profiles, and how to go about it.

    I have a slight problem I have been trying to figure it out for days but can't see where my problem is, its probably staring me in the face but just can't seem to see it.
    I am trying to print out my 2 dimensional array outdie my try block. Inside the trying block I have two for loops in for the arrays. Within the second for loop I have a while to put token from Stringtokeniser into my 2 arrays. A number of problems.
    First, I bet you see a lot of "error at" messages, don't you? You create a 21x7 array, then go through the first array up to 21, going through the second one all the way to 21 as well.
    your second for loop should go to flights[x].length, not flights.length. That will eliminate the need for ArrayIndexOutOfBounds checking, which should have been an indication that you were doing something wrong.
    Second, when you get to flights[0][0] (the very first iteration of the inner loop) you are taking every element from the StringTokenizer and setting flights[0][0] to each, thereby overwriting the previous one. There will be nothing in the StringTokenizer left for any of the other (21x7)-1=146 array elements. At the end of all the loops, the very first element in the array (flights[0][0]) should contain the last token in the file.
    At the end, you only print the first element (i=0, j=0, println(flight[ i][j])) which explains why you see the last element from the file.
    I'm assuming you have a file with 21 lines, each of which has 7 items on the line. Here is some pseudo-code to help you out:
    count the lines
    reset the file
    create a 2d array with the first dimension set to the number of lines.
    int i = 0;
    while (read a line) {
      Tokenize the line;
      count the tokens;
      create an array whose size is the number of tokens;
      stuff the tokens into the array;
      set flights[i++] to this array;
    }
