Printing errors (font substitution?) in Reader 9.0

A client is having problems printing PDFs from Reader 9.0. The file is viewing correctly, but when she prints it, parts, but not all of the document text is printing as what she has described to me as 'Arabic looking' (I am going off her description, it probably isn't actually Arabic).
She seems to be having the same problem printing from various PDF files. The file that I supplied to her was designed in Indesign CS4, PDF'd using the 'Export' function out of Indesign (rather than saving as a .ps file and PDF'd using Distiller), with form information added in Acrobat Pro 9.0 (Windows versions). But as none of our other clients seem to be experiencing the problem and she is having problems with all PDFs that she prints, it doesn't sound like it is a problem with the file.
She upgraded from Reader 7.0 to 9.0 which she installed today. She is running Windows XP - not sure which version but 'it is an older one' according to her.
Any ideas? If I've supplied insufficient information, what other information should I be getting from her?
Any assistance will be gratefully received! Thanks!

Thanks Michael,
The file that I have sent her has both vector and raster graphics in it, and they were apparently printing fine. It just seems to be text that's not printing correctly.

I created a brochure in pages and exported it to a pdf format. The pdf looks and opens perfectly using preview but when opened in adobe reader (which my printer uses), fonts look odd, transparencies don't display...etc. Tells me error exists on page?

Does this essentially mean there is no way to fix this problem on my end? It's a pity because the design and branding of my brochure will suffer if I remove transparencies and use different fonts. It also concerns me moving forward because it means the quality of print on my pieces will be significantly lower because most commercial printers use Adobe products.

  • Printing Error: There is a problem with a font file.

I get this error when I try to print:
"Printing Error: There is a problem with a font file."
I tried exporting to PDF and printing from there. I get this message:
"An error exist on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem."
    Has anyone encountered this problem?

You may have a corrupted font. Try substituting fonts to see which one is the problem.

  • Why does a font substitution occur when I print a webpage? How can I fix it?

When I print a webpage, a font substitution occurs. This happens no matter what printer I send the document to. It did not occur in previous versions of Firefox.

    Gabe,
It sounds as though Pages is trying to resume editing a bad document, or a very large one. Quit Pages, Force Quit if necessary, and then start it up again while holding down the Shift key to prevent reopening formerly open documents.

My Computer is a Dell w/ Window XP SP3, and my printer is also a Dell Photo AIO All-In-One 922.

Download the offline installer here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
Save it to your downloads folder.
    Reboot and then run it.

  • PDF/A and font substitution

I've embarked on a mission to scan, download, or otherwise capture all of my records as PDF files.  It seems reasonable to me that I want to save them as PDF/A when possible so that they will look exactly the same 20 years from now as they do today.  (Of course, that significantly increases the size of the files.  But bits are cheap.)  My problem, of course, is that many of the documents I am acquiring (for example, statements downloaded from financial institutions) use fonts that I don't have installed on my computer, so I can't convert them to PDF/A.
My question is: Do I really need (or want) to convert documents to PDF/A?  Assuming the document doesn't rely on some non-standard font I just happen to have installed on my PC, and the font substitution magic works well enough today to give me a perfectly acceptable document, then can I rely on it working just as well 20 years from now?  Can I rely on font substitution in other vendor's products producing similar results?  Is there anything in the PDF spec that constrains font substitution to producing something similar to what the Adobe products do today?
    TIA - Bob

BTW, I tried printing a PDF to the PDF printer with the Default Settings option set to "Press Quality" and I got this:
    %%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
%%[ Error: Helvetica-Narrow not found, using Font Substitution. Font cannot be embedded. ]%%
%%[ Error: typecheck; OffendingCommand: cshow ]%%
    Stack:

    --moveto-- 0 --exch-- --rmoveto--} --ifelse-- /_ct_i _ct_i 1 --add--
    --def-- --currentpoint-- /_ct_y --exch-- --def-- /_ct_x --exch-- --def--}
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
I tried printing a PDF to the PDF printer with the Default Settings option set to "High Quality Print" and it created a new PDF file.  All of the pages in my original document, which were landscape orientation, became portrait orientation in the new document.  But otherwise I can't see anything obviously different between the two.  In particular, the list of fonts is identical between the old and new documents.  That is, the new document has the same embedded fonts and the same non-embedded (and still missing) fonts.

  • HP LASERJET CP1525nw print error when printing online Gmail emails with Google Chrome

HP LASERJET CP1525nw print error when printing online Gmail emails with Google Chrome. Extra large font sizes and weird formatting issues only when printing emails from Gmail within Chrome. No problems when printing the same email from Gmail+Internet Exolorer or Thunderbird. Using the IE Tab extension in Chrome prints the email correctly but the style of Gmail's message window is completely weird ie: formatting bar is spread out vertically instead of horizontally. I believe it is clear that this is an application specific issue between the HP LASERJET CP1525nw printer and Google Chrome + Gmail. This printing scenario does not occur when printing anything else or when printing via another printer. I would appreciate receiving any suggestions to solve this issue.

    Hi AbZu,
You need to contact Google Chromes technical support as this is only an issue with Chrome. You have indicated that the printer functions correctly everywhere else. Check out the link below for Google Chrome technical support. Let me know if you need additional assistance?

  • Canon IR-Adv 5045 printing error 'Filter' failed

I just upgrade our office to include 7 new Mac Pro towers and one iMac. All of the towers had no problems when upgrading the print drivers for our Canon printer.  The iMac (only) returns a print error and will not print to the device. If anyone can read the error code in the consule and direct me how to fix the error I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Acrobat X Pro error "font not found" for all non-Adobe programs

I'm running Win 7 64-bit, Extensis Suitcase 3 (current version).
Having difficulty printing to PDF from all non-Adobe applications- everything from MS Word to Notepad. I can PDF fine from InDesign and Illustrator, whether using the File/Adobe PDF Presets or print-to-PDF. The problem occurs for me on all PS fonts that I have tested, whether very old or new. The fonts and files can be printed to Postscript printers with no problems- no missing fonts or substitutions. The problem only happens when trying to PDF in Acrobat.
I have two associates with printing issues, too. They are on XP and still use ATM 4.1. They've had similar PDFing problems since they were moved up to Acrobat Pro X.
    Thanks for any assistance.

Does Distiller know all of the font locations?

  • Font substitution issues when creating PDF from PS file in Distiller

I am not sure if this post should go under Distiller Server, but it dont know if there is a difference between Distiller X and Distiller Server.
Context: I am trying to convert postscript files on my PC that originate from a unique Mac built program and unfortunately receive the following error message:
%%[ Warning: Helvetica not found, using Font Substitution. Font cannot be embedded. ]%%
%%[ Warning: Helvetica-Bold not found, using Font Substitution. Font cannot be embedded. ]%%
%%[ Warning: Helvetica-BoldOblique not found, using Font Substitution. Font cannot be embedded. ]%%
When I try and convert the postscript font to a pdf in Acrobat Distiller X the font substitutes to Arial. I have a few versions of Helvetica on my PC but Distiller doesn’t recognise them.
My question is: how can I tell Distiller, as a default, to substitute to the Helvetica loaded on my PC rather than Arial so that I eliminate the error message and get an accurate pdf.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

You can set the folders in distiller by going to Settings.  See these two pictures (click on them)
    hope this helps.

  • Export PDF creates 0kb file and Print Error.

By "Print Error", I mean a simple pop-up window with the pages logo and the sentence "Print. Error while printing" even though I haven't asked for anything to be printed. The resulting pdf file is zero k in size and useless.
I had this problem in iW '06 and thought that '08 might fix it. No dice though.
Deleating prefs did not fix the issue. ['06 or '08]
    Anyone? Thanks.

I suspect that you've turned off a couple fonts with Font Book (or perhaps removed them from the Fonts folder). Pages expects certain fonts to exist - even if we don't use them or even want them.

  • Printer cannot print many fonts or pdf's

    Hi
When using my Lexmark laser E322 many fonts that are installed in Fontbook will not print correctly when using Adobe InDesign and PDFs just disappear from the Print monitor after a few seconds. Is there a possible corrupted preference file? Or does this sound like a printer error?
    Thanks
    Enio

    Several things come to mind.
Preferences. Look for a file that's similar to this:
    com.lexmarklaser322.plist Navigate to find it:
MaciintoshHD/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file and drag it to the Trash.
Also... the FontBook preference file: com.apple.fontbook.plist Same intructions.
Also, try reinstalling the drivers that came with your Lexmark printer. That alone can fix a myriad of problems.
I see you are runninng 10.4.2 You might consider updating to 10.4.9.
Run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. Disk Utility is located here:
    Applications/Utilities
Which PDF software are you referring to? Preview (Mac) or Adobe Acrobat Reader???

  • Keynote 5.1.1 print errors

Can't print Keynote 5.1.1 file. Printed page has postscript print errors: ERROR "invalidacess" and OFFENDING COMMAND "readonly". Tried printing to 2 different postscript printers and saving as new name, printed from 3 different computers (OSX 10.6.8 and OSX 10.8.5). Saving as a pdf to print worked but not printing the native Keynote file. All fonts are loaded. Anyone know the fix? thanks!

Just encountered this problem. Seems like Baculo was on the right track as the problem seems to be that it's not finding kpf.json. I did some further investigating and found a solution that worked. Instead of just removing the "/" in "/kpf.json", I replaced this whole bit:
    showUrl+"/kpf.json"
    with this:
    "../kpf.json"
Try that and see if it works. I didn't do any of the scriptManager stuff.
Also, this fix only seems to fix firefox and chrome browsers. IE9 still broken for me.

  • Error 49.4c02 with Reader 8.2.1

    Hi,
    We have:
HP Laserjet 2430 FW 08.112.3 (latest) with HP JetDirect J7949E FW V.33.14 (latest)
HP Laserjet 4350 FW 08.008.6 (older) with HP JetDirect J7949E FW V.28.47 (older)
When printing a document with reader 8.2.1, we get error 49.4c02 on the HP printer LCD.
When printing the same document with reader 7.0.9 built into Solaris 10 update 4, we don't get any errors and the document prints fine.
I have tried to deselect/select several options in the print menu, eg: Download asian fonts, Optimize for speed, Level 3.
I have also noticed some posts of this happening on the Windows version.
    Does Adobe acknowledge this bug?
    Karl

This is a Fix that has worked for us, so far:
To "deleted a suspect print job" is not really a fix as the next corrupt job will cause the error again. I don't think anyone knows exactly what is wrong with the job either. I noticed the problem when we upgraded past Adobe Reader 7 (versions 8 and 9).
Last year we fixed this problem on HP color 46x0 and 4700 printers by replacing the 615n card (which has had a lot of problems, but that is another thread) with a 620 card.
I have over two hundred 4100 series through 4300 printers in use at my company. A couple of months ago we had 4 of these 49 errors fixed by having the system board replaced under warranty. We noticed that the replacement board had and older firmware installed. I have been very good at keeping up with updating firmware, so all my HP printers have the latest image.
Some may mention to make sure you have the "latest versions of firmware for the printer . ."  This is what we found to be the problem. All of my 4250 printers have firmware 20080319 08.015.0 installed. When users reported the 49 errors on 4 printers a couple of weeks ago I installed the 2007 firmware image on them. In two weeks, none of these printers have had the problem. If you remote into the printer and look at the Event Log, you can see how often this error occurs. I was seeing it happen about every 50-100 pages. I have over 4,000 pages now without a problem on the printers the older image was installed on. I just did 2 more last night and plan on doing this to all over the next month.

  • [solved]Mono font substitution problem in gnome terminal

I have to edit mono font substitution in 65-nonlatin* in /etc/fonts/conf.d
Still don't understand why font rendering in terminal is different from the rest of the system though...
Don't know where else to post this, so it ends up here...
I just upgraded fontconfig today and substituted the ubuntu packages (cairo, freetype2 and libxft) with the cleartype ones (as the later are up-to-date and turn out looking cool too).
The only problem I have now is that mono font substitutiton got messed up in gnome-terminal.
Both gedit and terminal use the system mono font (which is set to Monospace), with Liberation Mono as the preferred font. But somehow the terminal decides to use a different font (looki like my Chinese font: wenquanyi-zenhei).
If I tell the terminal to use Liberation Mono, I get a serifed Chinese font, so this is not a solution for me.
I've read somewhere that gnome-terminal does not follow the system fontconfig? It gave me a lot of trouble the last time I upgrade the relevant files. So unfortunate that it decides to be naughty again this time...

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Configuring_locales instructed me to 'export LANG=en_EN.utf8' to set the system language to english, yet that locale doesn't exist in locale.gen. Of course, I had neglected to look in locale.gen for such an entry to uncomment it, or I would have noticed the error sooner. All is working now.
