Printing (flattening) a PDF'd powerpoint file

Hello.
I work in a Uni print room and get bombarded with lots of printing problems so i thought i would share this one and see if it is common or if there's any advice that could help.
I was sent a powerpoint file that has been converted to a PDF (i don't know what settings converted it i'm afraid) and people have been struggling to print it. It is less than 1mb in size and is a fairly simple powerpoint file made up of about 20 slides with text and master slide graphic that appears to be nothing out of the ordinary.
When it is sent to print it takes ages to flatten and get to the printer. I flattened the file using acrobat pro 9 and the file, once it eventually finished had grown from less than 1mb to over 350mb!
Anyway, i was hoping someone could shed some light on why this is happening to something as basic as a converted powerpoint file. Any advice will be greatfully recieved. I've read that it could be something to do with transparencies flattening, if that's helpful.
many thanks in advance.
Chris

Thanks for replying Bill,
I don't have the original Powerpoint file i'm afraid. The reason this is a concern is that the Uni has a new online area where lecturers can put work up for students to get to. It appears everything must be PDF on there.
Well, i had a bit of a play and found i was able to flatten the file to a 3mb file by putting it on "low resolution" and dropping the "raster/vector" setting to "0".
This isn't ideal but atleast it means we can print the file.
Attached is the first page of the original PDF.  http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FHII77RR (hope this link is ok to use)
I believe that the problem is coming from the grey slide graphic on the left. It actually appears to go all the way across the page, as when flattening i can see the page loading and see this grey pattern covers all the page. Hope that makes sense.
Thanks again
Chris

  • Creating links to Word, PDF and Powerpoint files

    I need advice on how to create links to Word, Powerpoint and PDF files in my Captivate project.  How do I also make sure that when my file is published, those links can be accessed by the reader.  I am new to this process.  Thanks!

    Yes. You can place the linked file in your zipped folder. Here is a recommended workflow.
    1. Add a button (Smartshape or regular button) to the slide.
    2. Assign the Open File or URL action to the button. In the URL field, specify the file name (say, Sample.PPTX) which you want to link to.
    3. Click the down arrow button next to the URL field and select New so that the file launches in a new window.
    4. Save and publish your project to a folder.
    5. Go to the published folder and place the linked Sample.pptx file in the folder.
    6. Zip the published folder.
    Absolute Path is where you give the full path of the file's location including the folder structure. For example, C:\<UserName>\Documents\My Adobe Captivate Projects\Sample.pptx. If you use this, then you have to maintain the same folder structure in the published folder as well, which is impractical.
    Relative Path, in this case, is where you just give the file name and make sure that the file is in the published folder.
    Just Google and you will find several examples of absolute and relative paths. You will even see that you can define sub folders if required.

  • How Come I Can't Print as a pdf?

    Hi,
    I'm a relative newbie. I want to create a pdf from a web page but when I choose Print as a pdf from the File menu, it only gives me the option of saving the PDF as a PostScript. I want to save it as a PDF. I don't usually have problems doing this. What is going on? Can anyone help?

    Hi,
    I am working in Safari and doing just that. From the File menu, I choose Print, then PDF, then I usually have the option of Save as PDF but for some strange reason, it is no longer option but rather only Save as PDF PostScript. How come?

  • Printing/saving to PDF...  pdf file size is enormous...

    I am trying to convert a psd file that is a 36"X80" banner to a pdf file.  In the past, I have printed to PDF and all has been fine.  Today the Print to PDF fails...  it doesn't give me an error it just pretends like it prints to pdf with the status box popping up for a second, then nothing.  So I attempted to Save As a PDF instead...  this worked, but resulted in pdf with a file size of 453M!  This is much larger than the pdf's I was getting before, in the 3-ish M file size... any idea what I can do differently please?  thank you!

    convert a psd file that is a 36"X80" banner to a pdf file.
    why send PDF
    your printer will most likely flatten a 36x80" PDF document in Photoshop and print it as a .tif (even if they are going through a RIP)
    ask them that up front if that's what they do and save yourself some time (if they do not preserve vector info)
    your printer should provide a preferred resolution (likely 90-180 ppi)
    and most safest colorspace recommended: sRGB
    let them convert to their CMYK if needed
    i would Save As (and deliver) a max-quality .jpg (or compressed .tif depending on the image)...

  • Flatten Dynamic pdf Files

    Hi,
    I have a dynamic pdf file where users complete text fields, drop down lists and image fields. I also have lock all fields button script that I found in this forum to lock all form fields once user completes it. I was wondering is there a way to save or produce a flat static pdf file in the end? Sometime the dynamic form can increase in size due to the size of image inside the image field. So is there a way to flatten all its contents in the end and produce a smaller copy of that file? This way any user even with old version of adobe reader can open it  since its no longer a dynamic form.
    I know sometimes I can do it by printing it as an "adobe pdf" file but it does not allow me when have the permissions set-up. I dont want to give full access too. What permissions do I need to change to enable this? Is there another way to flatten a dynamic file in the end? Has anyone done this?

    Thanks radzmar...sorry it took me awhile to get back to you.
    This is were I have a problem. Since these LC forms are password protected with a permission pwd to prevent the form from being edited, I am unable to print this form to PDF. It gives out the following message:
    %%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
    This PostScript file was created from an encrypted PDF file.
    Redistilling encrypted PDF is not permitted.
    %%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
    %%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
    I am guessing that above message is displayed since the document is restricted from being changed. So is there a way to allow a pdf printing with the permission password enabled?
    Alternatively, I thought another way to flatten pdfs might be to save the pdf file as jpeg image or any image file. But that doesn't work when the permission pwd is enabled as well since it shows the message "Insufficient permissions for image extraction". So whats the solution in this case? what are my options to flatten the pdf files in the end when the permission password is enabled?

  • Help, print to pdf creates huge files!

    Usually when I want to print an image created in Photoshop or Illustrator, I first print it to pdf to make a smaller file size. This has worked great for me for years, but now I have an Illustrator file which ends up much bigger (22 mb instead of 2 mb) in the pdf version, and I can see all the layers when it opens. How can I print a flattened image?

    If you have layers in Illustrator with visibility off, delete them before making a .pdf.
    You would think they that gets deleted before making a .pdf but they do not.
    In acrobat the protection/remove hidden information also bitmaps the file, though that is not good for me, oif that is ok you iwll get your smaller file.

  • Powerpoint file prints as image

    When I print a pdf file from powerpoint, all pages print as images. The same file on another computer prints correctly as a pdf file. Does anyone know why and what setting I can change so that the pages do not print as images.
    Thanks

    Just to be sure, do you mean "Adobe PDF" or "pdf"? If the latter, do you have some other PDF printer installed? Being careful in terms of how you describe things can save a lot of time in helping.
    What versions of Acrobat and Office are you using? These may or not be important, but they may be the key to the problem. I have been looking through PPT 2003 and can't find anything that would cause the result to be a graphic.

    Hey all,
    I'm a teacher and I've been scripting PDFs for use as marking sheets for assignments. What I'm trying to achieve is a situation where I tick all the boxes, marks are calculated and comments filled-in using my form fields (which all work fine) and then produce a PDF from that file with the student's name as the new file name (which is where I'm stuck!).
    In the past, I've had a button that on mouseOver brings the field with the student's name into focus, mouseDown evoked the File:Copy menuItem (copying the student name to the system's clipboard) and then mouseUp which triggered File:Print from which I would choose 'Adobe PDF 8.0' as the printer, hit Save, paste the student's name as the file name and choose the appropriate directory.
    File:Copy is no longer a "safe" menu item according to the latest versions of Acrobat, so I'm having to manually copy the name which is complicating the process further.
    I'm working on a script activated by the mouseUp of a button in this PDF which is currently looking like this:
    >var pp = this.getPrintParams();
    // format name to remove spaces and commas
    var studName = this.getField("Name").value.split(",").join("_").split(" ").join("");
    pp.interactive = pp.constants.interactionLevel.silent;
    pp.printerName = "";
    pp.fileName = studentName + ".ps";
    this.print(pp);
    Although the console will list 'AdobePDF8' as one of my printers, I've since discovered that "the destination printer cannot be set through this property in Mac OS" :( . I can set it as my default printer to work around it, but I still can't dictate the name of the new file. So, I've resorted to printing to PostScript with the aim of running them all as a batch through the AdobePDF8 printer later, except there's still a few problems.
    The name of the PostScript file won't work when I try to include the value of another variable (var studentName)
    The fonts in the PostScript files that it does produce get substituted with Courier and look terrible
    Both the API Reference and the Developer Guide seem to indicate that you can print to a file rather than a printer, but both only seem to mention PostScript file using this method.
    Is there another way to do this? If not, is there a solution to the two problems I mentioned?
    Cheers,
    Chris

    Ok, I've pursued the SaveAs method (as George suggested) with moderate success with the following code (secure function names have been changed ;) ):
    config.js file script:
    >myTrustedSaveAs = app.trustedFunction( function ( doc, studName )
    app.beginPriv();
    doc.saveAs({
    cPath: studName,
    bCopy: true,
    bPromptToOverwrite: true
    app.endPriv();
    myTrustedOpenDoc = app.trustedFunction( function ( path )
    app.beginPriv();
    app.openDoc({
    cPath: path
    app.endPriv();
    Button's onMouseUp script:
    >// get student name and turn it into a file name
    var studFile = this.getField("Name").value.split(",").join("_").split(" ").join("") + ".pdf";
    // get the current document's directory path
    var origFile = this.path;
    var pathBits = this.path.split("/");
    pathBits.pop();
    // whack 'em together
    pathBits.push(studFile);
    var studFilePath = pathBits.join("/");
    // toss the form fields and stuff
    this.flattenPages({
    nNonPrint: 2
    // save the new file
    myTrustedSaveAs(this,studFilePath);
    // open the original again (not working)
    myTrustedOpenDoc(origFile);
    // close the one I just saved
    this.closeDoc(true);
    This is what happens:
    Button is clicked,
    All the form fields and buttons are removed,
    It produces a file with the new file name (e.g. Lawrence_Chris.pdf) next to the original,
    The file closes
    I'm pretty sure that once the SaveAs runs and the new file is created, I actually still have the original file open instead of the that was just saved. This would explain why the openDoc command doesn't seem to do anything because the file it's opening is already open. The closeDoc then runs and of course I then have no open documents!
    So, now I either need a way to revert the open original file so I get all of my form fields back and don't have to reopen it, or a way to close and then immediately open the file without saving changes. :/
    Any ideas?
    slight inconvenience of needing a separate .js file written for the user's JavaScript folder before launching Acrobat to overcome security restrictions. File sizes only seem to get down to about 376KB as opposed to the 40KB files that the AdobePDF8 printer spits out. :(

  • How to save print setup for pdf file so that every user can open and print w/o manually performing?

    Can is there a way to configure the print settings (i.e. paper size, orientation, etc.) and save this setting as part of the pdf file? I would like the users of pdf files to be able to open the file and simply print, without having to manually configure the print settings.

    Not sure if this will help. I got this information from the built-in help under Acrobat 9.
    Advanced
    Lists PDF settings, print dialog presets, and reading options for the document.In the PDF settings for Acrobat, you can set a base Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for web links in the document. Specifying a base URL makes it easy for you to manage web links to other websites. If the URL to the other site changes, you can simply edit the base URL and not have to edit each individual web link that refers to that site. The base URL is not used if a link contains a complete URL address.
    You can also associate a catalog index file (PDX) with the PDF. When the PDF is searched with the Search PDF window, all of the PDFs that are indexed by the specified PDX file are also searched.
    You can include prepress information, such as trapping, for the document. You can define print presets for a document, which prepopulate the Print dialog box with document-specific values. You can also set reading options that determine how the PDF is read by a screen reader or other assistive device.
    Create print presets
    A PDF can contain a set of print presets, a group of document-specific values that is used to set basic print options. By creating a print preset for a document, you can avoid manually setting certain options in the Print dialog box each time you print the document. It’s best to define print settings for a PDF at the time that you create it, but print presets provide a means to add basic print settings to a PDF at any time.
    Choose File > Properties, and click the Advanced tab.
    In the Print Dialog Presets section, set options and click OK.
    The next time you open the Print dialog box, the values will be set to the print preset values. These settings are also used when you print individual documents in a PDF Portfolio.
    Note: To retain a print preset for a PDF, you must save the PDF after creating the print preset.
    Print Dialog Presets
    Page Scaling
    Prepopulates the Page Scaling option in the Print dialog box with the option you choose:
    Default
    Uses the application default setting, which is Shrink To Printable Area.
    None
    Prevents automatic scaling to fit the printable area. This setting is useful for preserving the scale of page content in engineering documents, or for ensuring that documents print at a particular point size to be legal.
    DuplexMode
    For best results, the selected printer should support duplex printing if you select a duplex option.
    Simplex
    Prints on one side of the paper.
    Duplex Flip Long Edge
    Prints on both sides of the paper; the paper flips along the long edge.
    Duplex Flip Short Edge
    Prints on both sides of the paper; the paper flips along the short edge.
    Paper Source By Page Size
    Selects the option by the same name in the Print dialog box. Uses the PDF page size to determine the output tray rather than the page setup option. This option is useful for printing PDFs that contain multiple page sizes on printers that have different-sized output trays.
    Print Page Range
    Prepopulates the Pages box in the Print Range section of the Print dialog box with the page ranges you enter here. This setting is useful in a workflow where documents include both instruction pages and legal pages. For example, if pages 1–2 represent instructions for filling out a form, and pages 3–5 represent the form, you can set up your print job to print multiple copies of only the form.
    Number Of Copies
    Prepopulates the Copies box in the Print dialog box. Choose a number from 2 to 5, or choose Default to use the application default, which is one copy. This limitation prevents multiple unwanted copies from being printed.
    Thanks.

  • [Applet]Printing issue with pdf files on Xerox 4595

    Greetings !!
    I'm trying to print to a Xerox 4595 printer from a Windows XP station (limited account) using a Java Web Applet.
    This applet generates pdf files which have to be printed.
    The Xerox 4595 uses a printing queue that is detected by the Applet.
    The problem is the following: usually when printing a simple local file from this computer there is a box that asks you your login to let you create a job and then print.
    When using the Java Applet, there is no way to have this print box displayed. We have the Java Print Dialog but once clicked on "Print" there is no box displayed to pass the login to the printer and let us print.
    Is anyone already worked with Xerox 4595 and experienced such issue ?
    How can I, using the Java language and modify the Applet, ask the printer to send me the dialog box asking for the login ? Without this login no jobs are accepted and we can't print the generated pdf files.
    I looked on the printer queue settings and it seems that the Xerox uses the IPP to communicate with the local computers in the office.
    The server from which the Applet is used is a openSuSE Linux Web server (apache2)
    How come using Linux workstations any pdf files are printed (on shared printers such HP laserjet) and under windows there is jammed characters and sheet feed instead ?

    A lot can depend upon which app your are using on your tablet device, the same applies to computer programs but apps are much worse.
    Which app are you using?
    I would try the free Adobe Mobile Reader. This product seems to support more features than other apps.
    There could even be issues with the type of tablet you are using. The Apple line may work better then Android devices since there is QA check and approval by Apple.
    Another factor is the how the PDF was created.
    How well are the maps displayed on your laptop or desktop? Try different values of zoom.

  • Elements dropping off my files when printed from a PDF

    Please can anyone help... I am running InDesign CS1, I have recently designed a leaflet which included dotted lines for answers to questions.
    To make the dotted lines I used the full stop button (rather than the dotted line option on the line tool). Because the file had an awkward bleed area it was necessary to create a PDF file (using the inDesign PDF export option at High Resolution, no compressions) to lay the document up ready for print.
    However when I printed the document to a networked Colour Copier and to the Platemaking system the lines had mysteriously dropped off... Unfortunately I didn't spot that they weren't on the Platemaker Preview because they hadn't appeared on the Colour Copy (which I use to compare the two for errors) and so a 10,000 print run later and the job was rejected. Does anyone know why this has happened?
    If I print directly from the original InDesign document they show perfectly. If I print the same PDF layup from InDesign CS2 they don't show. Yet if I print from InDesign CS4 they print perfectly from exactly the same file, so I don't think it can be down to the PDF or the typeface (which is standard Helvetica Light).
    I obviously can't afford for this to happen again and it would be good to know if there is something I can do to prevent it... In a perfect world all 3 machines in the office would be running the same version, but in the current financial climate we can't afford to upgrade. I would use CS4 all the time, but for the other two computers which would never be able to open the InDesign files again. It doesn't make sense to me as EVERYTHING was created on the CS1 machine, so I would assume that the machine and software would be able to use it's own programming without issue.
    Thank you for any help you can give me.

    Why are you using the line tool or full stops for this? Use a right indent tab and use a "full stop" in the leader
    http://indesignsecrets.com/tab-leaders-part-1-separating-columns-of-text-with-dots.php
    http://indesignsecrets.com/tab-leaders-part-2-formatting-leaders.php
    I'm not clear on what version of InDesign you are referring to - CS1, CS2, CS4?
    As for why it's not appearing, that is a mystery? Any screenshots ?

  • Used to be able to print multiple page pdf files on my HP 7310 all in one and then it stopped and would only print the curent page. This is tedious for long PDF docs. I am on 10.6.8 .

    Used to be ablert to print multiple page pdf files on my HP 7310 all in one printer and now I can only print the current page and therefore it takes forever printing them one by one. I am in version 10.6.8. Tried printing as image using the advanced click and that did not work either.  I have Adobe 9.0 reader installed.

    I tried this earlier, and I tried it again today.  Both times it said "Software Missing!"  and "HP Software required to connect to your printer over the network could not be found on this computer."  But when I tried to install the software (AIO_CDB_Net_Full_Win_WW_130_141.exe, which I downloaded from HP's web site), it wouldn't install, as described above.  In the diagnostic utility, I clicked "skip", and it said "Connection Verified!", and "The printer is connected to the network and the services related to the network connections have been verified and reset to a normal operating state.  Everything appears to work fine at this point.  Please doa test print to verify that the issue is resolved or click Skip to move to the next step."  I clickedthe "Test Print" button, and immediately it popped up a box that said "Test Print Failed."
    I tried again to install the HP software, and it installed, detected the printer, and asked me to select it.  I selected the printer, clicked "next", and it did its network diagnostics.  Then it said "Problem(s) found with your network" and "Problem(s) may exist with the network functions of your printer . . ."  I continued the installation without connecting to the printer.  Then I ran your network printer diagnostic tool again, and got the same result - "HP Software required to connect to youir printer over the network could not be found on this computer."
