Printing from classic OS9 from 10.3.9

Gentlemen:
I am running 10.3.9 on my iBook G4.
I have a Photoshop LE program that came with a Wacom tablet, which opens up in Classic and works splendidly.
However, when I try to print from it, I'm asked to choose the printer, Epson Stylus Photo RX620, it then won't print.
For that matter I can't print anything at all in Classic and the printer works perfect in Panther.
I was going to make a trip to the Apple Store where I'm sure they will tell me something real simple that I didn't see.
Maybe someone here can save me that embarassment.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Started with Apple 2e

Hello Again Jeff!
Why would your iMac G3 have anything to do with the printing problem on the G4?
Maybe the OS 9 compatible driver, that I posted a link to, in My Previous Reply, has that driver installed.
You wrote "I thought that when I installed the drivers that they would automatically be transferred into Classic."
I didn't find that to be the case, when I used to use Classic.
I had an older Lexmark printer that needed a driver installed in both OS 9 & OS X.
Bob Gold also suggested "You should be able to find the OS 9 drivers at Epson..."
Here again, as I posted in my previous response, is the link to the page, where the OS 9 Epson Stylus Photo RX620 can be found.

  • Scanning/printing into/from native OS9 apps running in classic

I am sure some of what I am about to ask is/has been covered in the numerous threads under this section, but I have a time crunch on and need help (the Mac is my wife's, but I get to do the tech support since I work in IT [management now, not hands on any more and when it was hands on, it was 8 years ago, SGI's IRIX OS and apps support, not 'hardware'] and she has a deadline approaching).
So take a seat and read on, this is not a short post ...
I have an upgraded G4 sawtooth which was running MacOS9 prior to the upgrades.
During the upgrades (to fully benefit from the numerous enhancements with Tiger [10.4.6 retail version]) I had to go to MacOS9.2 (via MacOS9.1) which I did via the downloads page on the apple site.
The original HD is still loaded with the original MacOS9 installation plus firmware and OS updates to 9.2 and I can boot from it just fine if I want to.
There is a separate hard disk with the Tiger install on an OS partition (keeping users away from systems files always seemed to be sensible MO) which I created during the OSX installation process; the remainder of the disk is set aside for 'data'.
The printer (Epson SP1200) and the scanner (Epson Perfection 1660, if I recall correctly [I'm not in front of the system as I type this]) worked just fine and dandy under MacOS9.
Under OSX, the printer still works, but I do not see it in the chooser when running in classic (should i be able to?) and I am unable to access any of the printer specific utilities (like head cleaning, alignment, ink levels etc). I have the drivers from Epson for OSX installed and the drivers for 8.? - 9.2 were installed and working prior to slapping OSX on the system. I believe that I have the Epson OSX driver selected for use by anything needing printing in OSX (after referencing article <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4682179&#4682179> in a response from Matt Broughton to an earlier question) but am not convinced; the print interface looks suspiciously similar to the GIMP stuff that worked 'out of the box' with the Tiger install and I still get no access to the utilities allowing me to maintain print quality.
I read in another thread that OSX does not allow classic to access 'hardware'.
    - Is this the case and if so, does 'hardware' include peripherals?
    - If I 'boot' into the original 9.2, am I really using native 9.2, or is it still classic and am I still 'wrapped' in OSX?
    - Do I need to re-install the peripherals' drivers to get them to show up as expected in MacOS9 as a result of the 'selective surgery' performed on the old OS by the OSX installation process?
    - Is it down to proper re-selection of the original extensions for the old MacOS9 setup?
    I have yet to install the OSX drivers for the scanner, but similar questions arise;
    - do I need to do so in order that applications running in Classic 'see' the scanner (and for TWAIN to work)?
    - if I install the OSX drivers, will Classic know what to do with them when the scanner is 'asked for' from an OS9 application or does Classic need the MacOS9 drivers as well?
    - Do I need to reinstall the MacOS9 drivers as a result of the 'selective surgery' performed on the old OS by the OSX installation process?
    - Could it be improper selection of extensions?
    Help, please
PS - Any recommendations regarding worthy tomes or texts 'out there' to facilitate troubleshooting issues with OSX running on PowerPC hardware with MacOS9 apps needed in perfect working order (until I can pursuade my wife to upgrade [via £2000 or so of application costs - ouch]) to OSX versions of said applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) would be welcome!

    Writing to myself ...
OK, the printing issues are resolved, it was down to extensions being disabled, nothing more.
Still a problem with the scanner. It works OK in OSX. However, in Classic, from Photoshop 5.5, when going to Import->Twain Acquire, I get informed ...
'Cannot find the scanner on the bus
Please ensure that it is switched on, ready to scan and that the cables are attached corectly'
Without wishing to sound irked, the scanner is on, ready to scan and cabled correctly (hence working in OSX!)
After clicking OK, the next msg is ...
'Could not complete the Import command because there is no scanner installed.'
Which again is bogus, since the scanner is installed.
I uninstalled TWAIN with the scanner detached, then re-installed per the instructions regarding upgrading systems. I also did the TWAIN re-install on OS9 first, prior to installing it on OSX, again per the instructions for TWAIN on OSX.
Starting to think fondly of sledge-hammers now, so somebody please help.
For now, I have a work around (use Epson Scan in OSX to scan an image, then open that in PS ...) but still would like to be able to get it to work from inside PS, as it used to before OSX.

  • Is it possible to print from classic?

Hi Folks! I've tried unsuccessfully for 3 years now to print from classic. If I really need to print from one of my OS9 apps I usually just put the file in the OS9 computer (that's why I keep it) and print from there by just unplugging the printer from the OSX computer and plugging it into the OS9 computer. It's not the drivers or the printer as all of that's installed. I suspect is has to do with print spooling and background printing but I've tinkered with this for a LOOOOOG time with no success. Tom

I suspect that you're using an HP inkjet. I have several HP inkjets, and all of them, without fail, simply refuse to print from Classic _using the HP drivers_. (Tiger fixed things so I can print. See below.) In all cases, attempting to print in the background works just fine, right up to where the spool file has been created and is about to actually go to the printer. I then get an error, on some printers, indicating that the file cannot be printer. On others, Classic simply either freezes or crashes. If I restart Classic, it'll freeze or crash again as soon as the print system attempts to print that file. If I delete the spool file, all is fine... except that I didn't get any output. The HPs started misbehaving with Panther. My Epson inkjet still works, so I suspect the problem ain't Apple's fault. The problem goes away if I boot the machine in OS 9... where it's possible to boot the machine in OS 9.
If I try to print from the foreground instead, I just move things up. Now I get the error message, freeze, or crash immediately instead of waiting for the spool file to be created.
That said, printing from Classic is simple... if you are not using a HP or Lexmark non-PostScript inkjet printer and are trying to print from Panther. (Jaguar and HP wasn't a good match, either, but at least sometimes you'd get output.) Given that most (not all, though...) Epson and Canon inkjets and all PostScript devices, even inkjets, were able to print, I suspect that HP's and Lexmarks' drivers have problems.
Tiger fixed the problems. In Tiger, Apple rigged it so that it doesn't matter if the vendors' drivers work or not, or even if they have OS 9 drivers, as long as they have _OS X_ drivers. In Tiger, the default is for printers in Classic to use the Apple LaserWriter 8 driver and pretend to be a PostScript device. The LW8 driver then hands off the output _to the proper OS X driver_, which then prints. You don't get features which aren't in the LW8 driver, but you do get output, including colour output. If you have an Epson inkjet, you can still use the Epson OS 9 driver... if Epson supplies one. It will usually work.
I suspect that you would be able to print from Classic just fine if you were using Tiger. You're using Panther. I suspect that you're not going to be upgrading at this late date.

  • HP LaserJet 1300 won't print from Classic

I can’t print out of Classic environment because the printer (HP Laserjet 1300) isn’t installed there. My computer does not have dual boot. (That is, it can run classic, but not boot up in classic.) I've read some related posts and have tried some suggestions, but so far to no avail.
The installation CD has installation for OS 9 and OS 10 and I have installed both from the OS X environment. But there is still no HP Laserjet 1300 icon in the Chooser in the OS 9 environment. I should mention that when I went to chooser and clicked on Laserwriter 8 icon, I noticed that there was a place that said “Select a PostScript Printer” but there was no printers to be selected in the related field. I have been to Apple System Profiler in OS 9 and there is no driver listed there for my HP laserjet even though I have installed it.
When I click print I get a yellow ! message that says that my Document could not be printed because printer “LaserWriter could not be found. Try again?
This printer works fine from OS X, but not from classic. I called apple help and they said to go to the HP website. The HP website said the following:
“Installing a driver in Mac in classic mode
    2004/11
Installing an HP driver in MAC® classic mode may be useful: if, for example, an application you want to use is not supported by MAC OS X.
This functionality is supported by the PostScript and the raster drivers.
    Installing the driver
With the latest version of the drivers, the installer already foresees separate MAC OS 9 and OS X installation. On MAC OS X, run the OS 9 installation and it will install in classic mode.”
    MY QUESTION:
How do I “run the OS 9 installation”? What buttons do I press to do this?
    Thanx in advance
    Fred

froellig, two wholly different things here.
Looking at the 9 driver for LaserJet 1300 HP offers for download, anyway, it isn't actually a driver - it's merely an installer which, from either X or 9, should give you Printer Description Files to use with the standard PostScript drivers, namely LaesrWriter 8 or AdobePS.
Test that it did that much by using Apple's Desktop Printer Utility to create a virtual desktop printer… If the Change button in PostScript Printer Definition (PPD) File pane leads to a Printer Descriptions list that does include HP LaserJet 1300 Series that much, at least, seems to have worked.
If the printer works from OS X, then you could use LaserWriter 8 in Classic to Print to File, which would give you .ps files which you could manually drag into any X print queue. This works for most printers.
The other thing is that yes, LaserWriter should show the 1300 in the right-hand Chooser pane so again, can X see it and print to it?
If not that suggests a cable or hardware fault, bad settings or interference from other software.
If X can see and use the printer, and there are no other faults with Classic 9, that suggests something inside OS 9 is interfering.

  • Printing from Classic on a non-os 9 printer

    Hi...
I hope you will tell me it will work...
I have a Samsung CLP-510 printer and there's no printer driver for OS 9. I want to print from Classic (on a Power Book G4). I need to use Classic because my whole invoice software is on this system. (yeah, I know...I know...)
There's no problem to install de Os X driver, so the printer will be installed on the computer. Will Classic have the printer installed too, even if i don't really install the os 9 driver? Will I be able to print directly from my software in Classic ?
    Many thanks for your help.
I need to know it before doing all this, that's why I'm asking you all.

    Probelm resolved.

  • Printing from Classic Using OS X Drivers

Shouldn't I be able to print from Classic using my Epson USB printer's OS X drivers (OS 9 drivers don't exist for this model)? I've tried opening the Chooser in Classic, but the printer doesn't show up.
    Thanks,
    Emily

Go to Chooser (while in a Classic App) and select LaserWriter 8 driver - even if there's no printer on the right.
When you want to print, the LaserWriter 8 print dialog comes up and you can select your OS X printers in the destination printer pull-down.
    Good luck.

  • Problem with printing from classic

I used to print things out from classic but somehow I can't print anymore. It tell me to go to chooser and choose the printer but I can't choose it. I tried to click on HP printer but no reponse. I tried to reinstall but no use. That reinstalling seems only appy to OS X, no affect on classics. Now what?
I use mostly os X but there are some files I need to print from classic appliction. Funnything is I was able to do it and somehow it does not do it anymore.

    Hi Soo Lee;
You are on the forum for Intel iMacs and in your original message you did state what system you had hence the reply that you can run "Classic" on an Intel iMac.
I would suggest that you report on the forum for PPC iMac instead.

  • Printing from Classic

I can no longer print from Classic (v 9.2)but printing from OS 10.1.5 is fine. Printing from Classic was not a problem until I tried to network my G4 with a PC. After several attempts, changing settings (airport, ethernet etc)I gave up and reset for printing in OS 10.
The printer is a Personal laserwriter 320. In classic when I print the message is Laserwriter 320 could not be found. I have tried changing settings etc. but can not get it to print.
    Any suggestions
    G4   Mac OS X (10.1.x)   Mac OS 9.2

I hope that's enough for someone else to now take this further…
An AsantéTalk ethernet to LocalTalk bridge should plug in and work with no configuration, so that shouldn't be part of the problem.
AppleTalk does need to be on, but it doesn't need zones; that's just a option for more sophisticated, managed networks.
You probably need to turn off all other networking, including AirPort, and I guess TCP/IP needs to be set to Configure: Manually, not Using DHCP, etc.
Pure, bootable OS 9 is what you invoked when you changed the startup disk to use the classic 9 which opened to the 9 desktop… as opposed to Classic, which bars some features so a cut-down version of OS 9 can run over X… the point here being that misconfiguration in X can effect 9 utilities, particularly at the level where peripherals including printers ineract with the system, and some things which perfectly happy in pure 9 are simply incompatible with Classic over X.

    Hello Soo Lee,
I am just starting to work with Jaguar so I am not sure this will help.
Can you boot into 9???? To do this you select the 9.2 as the start-up item.....Then I would re-install the 9 driver for your printer.
I am asuming that the printer works in X....This tells me that the cable is working.
You need to have the drivers installed in the 9 system folder. The go into the system folder and should go to the right location austomatically.
If you have done this and still have trouble, make sure the printer is on when you go into the chooser. It won't show up unless it is on.
Perhaps when you installed the new drivers for X it disabled the 9 driver. I am not sure but try these few things and post back...........Jim

  • New printer purchase and can't print from classic 9 partitioned side of HD

I recently purchased an Epson RX595 printer. After installation I found that I can only print from the OS X - 10.3.9 (Panther) partitioned side. (This is the original HD so it is not all that big.) I cannot print anything on the Classic 9 partition. My question is can I transfer my Microsoft Office 98 from Classic 9 to the OS X, if so, how do I do that? I tried simply click and drag and it opens from the OS X but the menu bar tells me it is really opening from Classic 9 and therefore will not print. My G4 is the first one Apple made (purchased in 1999). The processor is 450 MHz and I have 640 MB SDRAM. I was told by the support person at Epson that OS X is the "dominant" side of the HD which is fine. I just need to know how to get my applications on Classic 9 to the OS X. I would appreciate any help you can give me.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
That printer is only compatible with OS X (Jaguar or later) and the oldest version of Word compatible with OS X is Office 2000.
NeoOffice (freeware/opensource) is a Mac suite of applications compatible with Microsoft Office apps. Download and install it and you should be able to open and print Word .docs on the OS X side of your hard drive.

  • Can't boot OS9 from external HD

I have an external HD with OS X4 and OS9 installed on it. Classic will open, but I can't instal an OS 9 app because the app says I need virtual memory. I tried to boot OS9 from the external drive to install the app from OS9, but it is not a start up option in system preferences. I also can't start it from the c key. I have a full retail version of OS9.
Does any one have any suggestions? Do I need to install an earlier version of OS X?

    Allan,
    Thanks for the response.
When I upgraded my iMac G5 to OS X5 I thought it was time to finally get rid of all of my OS9 apps. I originally had them on an external bootable HD. It's now Thanksgiving and I had a few holiday graphics in Corel Print House 2000 I would like to use (OS9). I thought I would reinstall OS X4 and OS9 on the external HD which I did. OSX4 boots fine and classic opens but I can't get it to boot from OS9. I can't reinstall Print House because it says it needs virtual memory to instal.
Any ideas how I could load Print House onto my external HD or how to open a .cxx file? I wonder how I got this app on the external originally.

  • Printer issue with OS9.2 vs Classic & OSX

I'm trying to get the following to work together. An Epson C-64 with OS 9.2. After replacing the USB PCI card with a newer model, I can finally print in OS X, and the printer will start to print in Classic as well, but after perhaps 1/4 page of print I get an "out of memory" error message. I have max ram installed (384MB) and nothing but Classic, OS X and Word are running. If I boot straight into OS 9, the printer shows up in the Chooser, but cannot be accessed - the USB port doesn't show up in the port list. What might I try next?

after perhaps 1/4 page of print I get an "out of memory" error message.
You are probably using background printing. Your print image is written to a spool file and the keyboard is freed up for your use, while the de-spooler (such as Print Monitor, Espon3 Background, or whatever that printer uses) works in the background, sending your document to the printer.
The out-of-memory message is likely coming from the de-spooler, not the Mac OS. To fix, either allocate more memory to your de-spool program, or print "live" and endure not being able to use the keyboard while your document prints.
I have max ram installed (384MB)
Contrary to what the knowledgebase says, all models and all revisions of Beige G3 can run 3*256 MB RAM, for a maximum of 768 MB total, provided you install the correct 256 MB modules for a Beige or Blue & White G3. There are module height limits for the desktop model, modest ones for the tower, and for all practical purposes none for the All-In-One.
If I boot straight into OS 9, ... the USB port doesn't show up in the port list.
If you are using the same image for Classic and Mac OS 9, you may not have the correct Mac OS 9 drivers for the USB card installed. The simplest fix is to re-install Mac OS 9, taking care to Re-install all Networking items. It is not destructive, and generally takes only a few minutes.

Usual cause: printing at the wrong aspect ratio for the image - trying to print 5 x 3 in the shape of a 6 x 4 for instance.

  • Error when printing a PDF direct from SAP archive

    Hi together,
I try to print a PDF direct from SAP archive and I got the error ""C:\Program files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\reader\AcroRd.exe" /p /h" not found. In the internet I found several topics which describe this way to print a PDF without open the Acrobat Reader.
The customizing for document management (Local application) seems o.k. If I remove in the registry the parameters /h /p for print, Acrobat Reader will open and show the document if I use the print button in SAP.
Have anybody an idea what the reason is?
    Thank you.
    Regards

The rundll32 error seems to have disappeared.  Until this morning I had both this error and the rundll32.  All other types of docs open fine.  This one will open if saved to the desktop first, but not from Outlook.

    Hi,
How do you connect the printer to the XP machine ? If USB, you need to make that machine as a Print server. Please try this:
