Printing from OS 9.0 on G4 Powerbook 10.3.9

When I print from OS 9.0 environment I get an error message of -3158. Stating I need to be connected to a network to print. I don't think this is true. I used to be able to print. I have never used a network. Proper recent driver has been downloaded and entire system has been reloaded. HPs suggestion does not work and the Apple care packaged I paid for said they cannot help me. What do I do?

  • Network printing from MacBook (10.5.5) to HP3210 via Powerbook G4 (10.4.11)

The long winded title maybe says it all, but here's the problem.
We have two Macs; an older Powerbook G4 running 10.4.11 that has an HP Photosmart 3210 All-in-one printer/scanner hooked up via USB (and previously via Ethernet).
In another room we have MacBook running 10.5.5. This machine has successfully been set up to find the HP printer via Bonjour / network printing. However it has never been possible to send documents to print from within an application (i.e. File > Print within MS Word, for example). Attempting to print causes all applications we've tried to crash immediately on clicking File > Print or the shortcut. We have only ever been able to send documents to print by exporting them as PDFs and then dragging them on to the printer queue.
This is not so much of a huge problem, except that we often need to set Borderless printing etc from within the document, and dragging/dropping files onto the print queue doesn't seem to support these.
No such problems exist on the Powerbook, which prints fine with no crashes.
Could anyone suggest any possible causes? I'm happy to provide more info if needed; wasn't sure if this is enough.
    Many thanks in advance

I can't tell exactly what's wrong, since you attached only
    snoop log.
But since you're using DHCP, I guess you are trying to
do PXE boot to install. When you use PXE boot, you need
to configure some vendor options (like SrootIP4, SrootNM
etc) and also create macros with dhcpmgr.
    there is documentation at
    http:docs.sun.com
so check the documentation to see what is missing.
If you've already done these, check NFS configuration
if all directory are correctly shared.

  • Wireless printing from a PowerBook G4 through a router to an hp printer

I'm able to hook the usb cable directly to the printer from the powerbook and it prints great.
My hubby and I ran through the mac book and was able to to connect the mac to the router and then at some point it printed, but it was computer language... what could we be missing?
Oh (since this was a while back after giving up) I remember when selecting the printer model we were not given the choice to load a driver...so I'm thinking there lays the problem... however... we went to the website to even download the driver (since this mac should already have the driver preloaded from what I remember reading).... i have no idea if a CD came with it, it we found one and tried there or what... it's been that long since we tried... but then again, I had lunch yesterday and I can't remember what I ate?
Anyone want to try and help? There's a reason why I've got my user name as conehead. wink
    chelle
I would like to try this again. Thanks for anything you can give. I've gone through several pages of posts and didn't see anything that could help so now I'm posting my much needed help.

Network printing/Windows printing only works with a driver that was meant for network printing. To use the OS X built-in CUPS network choices, you need a CUPS driver. For postscript printers, this is not an issue, because postscript is the native output of OS X, and can easily be routed to the various choices in Printer Setup.
Non-postscript printers are Very Different. Except for Brother, no manufacturer has provided CUPS drivers. Instead, what you get are Carbon-type, OS9 legacy drivers, that have the comm protocol written into the driver (mostly USB). They can only print via local connection.
**Exception - when printing via an Airport/Bonjour enabled print server (Airport Express/Extreme), where the software does a port redirection, USB output from the Mac gets routed to the USB port on Airport Express/Extreme.
Short version - the driver provided by HP doesn't do network/windows printing.
Install hpijs + ESP ghostscript from:
    http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/
    Then follow this guide:

Hello @COOP1950 and welcome to the HP Forums!
I'd be happy to lend a hand, I just need to ask a few questions to get a bit more information
    1. Which version of Mac OS X is on your computer?
    2. How is the printer connected to the Mac?
    3. Do you have the HP software installed (if it's available for your printer/operating system)?
    4. What program are you trying to print from? Do you get the same result from all programs?
With that information I'll be able to have a deeper look into things for you!

  • Cannot print from hp DeskJet F4580

I have just bought my first MacBook with Mac OS X 10.6.4. Great computer.
However I cannot print from the wireless hp printer. I downloaded the latest driver from hp (maybe a fault) and started to install. Everything went as expected untill the setup process of the Printer Queue. Here I add the printer in order to create the Printer Queue, but when I click on the continue buttom I get this warning: Are you sure you want to continue without adding a Print Queue? I finished the installation with a congratulation sign.
Therefore there is no doubt, that the printer queue is missing. However I cannot found out to install the printer queue.
The printer is a socalled all-in-one printer. The scanner function is perfect with the wireless connection. But not the printer function.
I have also tried to connect via usb cabel. The result is the same. Scanner okay. Printer not okay.
The printer works perfect under Windows.
I hope somebody can help me. Thanks in advance.
    Erik

I'm having the same problem ! The wireless printing works using OS 10.5 on a G4 PowerBook but not OS 10.6 on an intel MacBook. I'm going to get in touch with HP as have used the latest drivers (as you have) - I've re-installed the HP software using Software Update for the latest version - still can't print. USB printing is also faulty so must be their drivers.
I'll let you know if I have any luck !

  • Cannot print from Address Book! Print freezes and will not proceed.

I want to print an address list for Christmas cards. When I select the Group, select all and select Print I get the option box. I then select my printer and use the down arrow to open the dialog box that shows I am printing from Address Book and gives the different forms I can use (ie list, label, envelope) as well as the fields to include in the list. Once I have everything selected I click the Print radio button. All of the information under the Address Book options line disappears. Print remains highlighted and my printer Que never opens or appears. If I manually open the printer there is no print job showing. At this point the Address Book application is frozen. I cannot select cancel on the print dialog box (I can click it, but it does not highlight and it does not close the dialog box! In order to get out of this situation I have had to close Address Book. The quit option on the menu does work and Force Quit is unnecessary.
I actually spoke with AppleCare on this issue on Friday 05 Dec 2008. The tech I spoke with knew of no other such situations, but when I started checking on this discussion page I see a posting from REECO from clear back on 24 Sept 2008. His posting can be found at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8161605&tstart=0
The technician had me do several things. One was to pull my Caches folder out of my system Library folder. He also had me remove some Address Book preference items. The end result of these actions was a Mac Pro that would not boot! (The failure followed an Address Book crash with a "KERPROTECTIONFAILURE" and the message that some QualityMedia plugin might have created the problem!)(I could find no such plug in either on my system or via Google search!) The tech had asked me to boot to safe mode by booting while holding down the shift key untill the spinning gear appeared. The machine never progressed to a successful boot! I ended up having to use a 2nd hard drive and physically place it in internal slot 1 on my Mac Pro proceeding to reinstall Tiger! The bad news is that this did NOT solve my printing problem.
If I am attempting to print from a new install with just the Apple address card and the Owner's card in Address book the print proceeds fine. Once I import my data I am back to the same print failure.
Some diagnostic steps I have tried. I have tried USB local printers and bonjour printers. I have used Epson and Canon printers. I have tried to print to a PDF. I have tried printing from another computer (12 inch PowerBook) with identical results!
At this point I am going to call AppleCare Monday morning and see if anyone there has any more suggestions. Any suggestions this forum has will be received gratefully!

I was having the same crash or "just not print" problem as seen in other posts. I was able to fix it however, by making changes in some of the address cards I was going to print. By editing the "parent", "child", "spouse" fields which will get added to the name line of the label, I was able to get labels to print (or pdf preview) without difficulty.
I did not try and determine exactly what the problem was, but basically did a data cleanup. Since I didn't know that those fields would print, I had previously included information beyond just a name in the fields, like birthdates and such, eg. "Jimmy - 12/1/05". After either removing the fields entirely where I didn't really need them, or just cleaning them down to names only, they printed just fine. I'd considered trying to disable the feature entirely but the data cleanup was not hard for a dozen or so names.

  • HP Laserjet 1020 connected to Airport Express - Can't Print from Windows XP

    Hi,
I have been using Airport Express for almost a year now, and it works fine with my old LaserJet 1200 connected to it, meaning that BOTH my ThinkPad(WinXP) and PowerBook(OSX 10.3) prints off the printer nicely. Last week I bought a LaserJet 1020 to replace the old printer. Now I can only print off my Mac, and not the ThinkPad.
    Here are some additional information:
    - Airport Express has been updated with latest updates.
    - Using newest printer driver available from the HP website.
    - New printer works when connected to ThinkPad via USB.
    - New printer works when connected to Airport Express and printing performed using my PowerBook.
Therefore, My conclusion is that Airport Express and Printer is working just fine, and that it's just my ThinkPad not being configured correctly. (Although at the back of my head I am guessing that just MAYBE it's the Airport Express not accepting a different printer)
This is what I did to install the printer from my ThinkPad to work with Airport Express (which is not working):
    1. Add a printer
    2. Local printer attached to computer (no auto detect)
    3. Selected existing TCP/IP port 10.0.1.1
    4. Selected my new printer driver
    5. Finish
I also tried a few things like:
    - Deleting the TCP/IP port and creating it again before installing the new printer again.
    - Off both airport express and printer and on again after about 10sec.Airport was on first, and after the LED turn green, printer was turned on and USB plugged into airport.
    - Restarting my ThinkPad.
I have tried everything that I can think of, and nothing worked... hence this posting to get professional help.

    Hi,
You might want to download and install bonjour for windows to your Thinkpad it is how I got my roomates XP laptop to print on AX.

The printer printed fine until about 2 weeks ago when this error message appeared.  Printing continues from Pages, I-photo, preview etc. —  only Photoshop fails.

  • Sharing Printer from iMac

I have an HP PhotoSmart C4280 connect via USB to my iMac running OS 10.5.4.
I have shared this printer in the Sharing Panel of the iMac.
My PowerBook sees the printer & can select it, but when I go to print a document it says it is unable to connect to iMac port 621.. then times out.
I have updated all software & restarted.
    Any other ideas?

i have this same problem. i have a "shared" printer (HP aio 5610) that worked before under OS x 10.5.4 and earlier. my host is a mac mini with USB to the HP 5610. i print from the mini or one of my two laptops that connect to the mini via Airport.
now i am using 10.5.5 and suddenly my other laptops (i have a mac book air and ibook) both cannot connect to the HP 5610. they can "see it" for sure but printing times out just like DanofSled says on port 630 with eventual timeout.
these laptops "share" the HP all-in-one via wireless airport extreme network. all worked fine before 10.5.5. only good for printing, no all-in-one functions though (known issue).
i have repaired permissions, reset printers on all macs, reinstalled HP software, installed HP driver pac, reinstalled 10.5.5 via download combo update, switched on and off the printer, used different USB, reset CUPS (a tip i came across but didnt work). i strongly suspect 10.5.5 broke the shared printing.
Satellites can see the HP 5610 everytime i reset the printers.
under system pref/ printers/default i CAN see the HP5610 and the correct location. BUT now it says "Print using: Generic PostScript Printer" as the actual HP driver is not on that laptop.... it can take a long long time (4 min) to allow you to add this printer, but once it does, the Printer shows up in "Print and Fax" under "System Preferences" just fine. as normal i "Add" the printer to the sattelite and theoretically it is now shared. But its not!
the host mac mini still works fine for printing and scanning.
however, now, under 10.5.5 the satellite laptops (airport) wont print. their own (satellite) print queue will accept the job, but it will eventually time out. the host mac-mini will never show the job on its own host print queue. clearly there is no connection.
NOTE: Under the satellites' print queue(s), you can select Printer/Network Diagnostics... and this shows an error at "server", the last light. the message says....
" Network Diagnostics was able to connect to the Internet, but not the server "HP Officejet 5600 series at XXX Mac mini.ipp.tcp.local". This could be caused by problems with the server or an Internet problem between the computer and server."
my printer is hooked as it always was. directly USB to the host Mac-mini, and "shared" via Airport to my two laptops.
anyone know what is up? reverting back to 10.5.X will be difficult

  • Printing From iBook To Printer on a Vista, Can't see Vista shared printers

Printing From iBook To Printer on Windows Vista Desktop, Can't see shared printer on a Vista machine from a Mac, although Windows notebooks find it immediately. When same machine is booted into XP the priners share perfectly with both of my iBooks, but when the same machine is booted into Vista with the printer shared etc, the iBooks don't see the printer. Other Windows machines on the newtork do see the shared printers in Vista.
I have previously always had success sharing printers on Windows XP machines with my iBooks. . However upon installing Vista on my desktop I find I can no longer find the printer in the Mac's printer setup utility. When I dual boot back to XP everything works fine, but on the same machine when I boot into Vista I am unble to see the printers. The Mac printer setup utility finds the Vista machine on the network, but the printers are never visible. Is their some secret or channge in Vista that prevents Mac's running , in my case,Tiger 10.4.8 from seeing a shared printer on a computer running Vista
On the Vista machine, if I boot into XP The printer is shared and Windows notebooks can print to it, but neither of my iBooks can see the Printers when Vista is running.

  • Problem printing from some software versions

Am assuming it has something to do with the (Adobe?) sepcifics of the machine since the same software on a G4 (10.4) Powerbook will print fine.
    Machine: G4, 10.4.11
    Printer: wireless HP6890,
Software: Just installed Acrobat Reader 6 then 8, will not print any PDF file. Can print PDF from Reader 5 (if 5 can open) or from Photoshop.
Software: InDesign CS2 & CS3, will not print. Can print from CS. Have tried re-installing InDesign.

Can print with Preview, Photoshop, Acrobat 5 (provided v5 can open the file).
So does not appear to be a problem with the PDF files or the printer connection.
"have you tried deleting that instance of the printer & adding it again? "
If you mean the printer that shows in System Preferences Print and Fax, yes.
Error messages say "the process pictwpstops / pstopdffilter stopped"
    Found this:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/300111
Cleaned the font cache but do not think it is fonts as can not print a PDF page that is only a graphic.
As noted at the Adobe forum the machine can print if 'print as image' is selected but that is a workaround, not an answer to the problem.

  • Printing from MacBook to a printer shared through Windows Vista

    Hi Everybody,
I'm unable to print anything from my Mac laptops to my HP printer which is shared via a Windows Vista PC.
I have a wireless home network with a PC, a latest model Powerbook G4 15"/1.67 and a MacBook Core2Duo. The PC is connected to an HP PSC 2355 All-In-One printer.
When I had Windows XP SP2 installed on my main PC, I was able to print from my Mac laptops through Samba (Advanced printer, smb://guest@myIPaddress/printersharename) without any problems.
I recently upgraded my PC to Vista Ultimate (RTM Technet full version). Now, I can no longer print via my Mac laptops, since supposedly, Vista's implementation of Samba has changed. I can, however, print from my MacBook when it's running Windows XP SP2 without any problems. This leads me to believe that the sharing-side on the Vista PC is set up correctly. The XP to Vista over wireless printing obviously doesn't use Samba. The Vista share does not have a password on it.
I've installed the Foomatic/HPIJS drivers on both my MacBook and the Powerbook. These are the errors:
Powerbook: "Unable to connect to SAMBA host"
MacBook: "The process "foomatic-rip" stopped unexpectedly with status 1"
I've tried all kinds of combinations for Samba, and also via the option "Windows Printing". My PC is in the same network Workgroup as the Macs, and they can see my Vista PC fine. I can also connect and share files with my Vista PC without any problems and connect through Samba using Finder (for file sharing). I cannot, however, see my shared printer through the Windows Printing dialog.
    Can anybody help me out?

  • Cannot print from MS Office using Canon MP600

I recently upgraded from a Powerbook to an iMac. The normal Apple migration tool worked wonders and everything was working fine.
Last week I was no longer able to print from MS Office. I try out demo's etc. so I'm wondering if something got broken. I've uninstalled as much as I can think of but still no luck. I tried uninstalling Office and the print drivers and then reinstalling everything over again - that didn't work.

    iMac, 24", 2GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Looks like I solved this. Unfortunately I don't know why it started doing this.
I tried a number of things - uninstalling Office, reinstalling Office, uninstalling the print drivers, reinstalling the print drivers, removing all caches, etc., etc.
After doing some sniffing around on some other questions it seems like this is a problem with a number applications. The repeated solution mentioned reinstalling Mac OSX but to maintain and archive the user accounts on the computer. I did this based on the following link:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/TigerInstall_SetupGuide.pdf
After doing that I reinstalled the print drivers, completed the install of Office 2004 and everything worked. Doing the reinstall removed all my Haxies. I'm starting to think it had to do with that. I'll likely apply them one at a time and see which one breaks it.

  • Printing from 10.5 on canon ix4000

I cannot get as good, ie fully saturated and solid, prints from new MacBook pro as from old PowerBook running 10.4.11 - exactly same printer & latest (4.83) driver
Printer - Canon pixma ix4000 photo software Nikon NX2
The only difference in the dialogue boxes is that the 10.5 printer sequence has dropdown 'color matching'>colorSync or 'vendor matching'(what is that???) instead of colorSync followed by standard & quartz filter. Choosing ColorSync in 'colour matching' cuts out Color Options>driver matching, ie no further colour management.
Not that the various slight differences in the 10.5 options make as much difference in the print as between printing from PowerBook or MacBook.
    Anyone any ideas please?
PS I know I can print image files on the MacBook from the PowerBook via network, but was hoping to save PowerBook for when I need a key Classic application (Microstation, never supplied for OSX, just robbed Apple of good ideas then dumped)

Vendor Matching will use the colour profile installed by the iX4000 driver. If you open the ColorSync application, then select Profiles then expand Other, you will the Canon BJ printer profiles. You will also see additional profiles with your printer model followed by an alphanumeric code, such as PR1. These are related to the different paper stocks you can select via the 'Quality & Media > Media Type' menu.
    The letters in the code are as follows;
    MP = Matte Photo Paper
    PR = Photo Paper Pro
SP = Photo Paper Plus Glossy
You will see each has a different gamut, with the SP having the largest. I recommend leaving the Color Management at vendor and then use the media menu to select the appropriate paper stock you are printing on.
