Printing in Classic

I have a G4/350 w/ OS10.3.9 and an Epson CX6400 printer/Scanner.
I have no problem printing in OS 10 or in OS 9. However when trying to print an OS 9 app in Classic I can only print to a PDF and then print from that.
Also, I cannot Scan in Classic.
The problem seems to be when I go to the chooser and select the CX6400 it does not see the USB Port. Is there anyway to correct this problem?
It's a real pain to have to change OS just to scan orto print something that does not print properly in a PDF.
Thanks

Did you load the OS9 printing and scanning software?
If you did not, check at Epsons website, they show software for printing and scanning on OS9 and OS10.

  • How can I add a new printer in Classic?

I recently re-installed OS X following a printing problem on my iBook G4 which has system 10.3.9 and Classic. All works fine except that I still need to use Classic for one application and to print from it. I have an HP Deskjet 5150 that used to work fine. I can print on it from OS X but in Classic the printer in not in the chooser nor in Utlity Printing Service so obviously I can't select it to try to print. What do I have to do to get the printer in chooser? I also want to put Acrobat writer in the chooser but I imagine it's the same process?
Please help I've spent a long time on it already without success!

I've requested a moderator move your thread to the appropriate forum. No action is needed on your part.
Just for your info, MacBooks can't run Classic, so your question is not as likely to be known the answer to by MacBook owners unless they have had previous experience, or also have machines able to run Classic.
I've written a FAQ that contains some articles on printing in Classic*:

Not sure which one will work for you.

  • I can print in classic but not OSX.

Fistly, what a great forum! I'm a recent convert to iBooks, have been reading as much as I can on this site to try to become as much of an expert as possible.
After much swearing I've now worked out how to use my Lexmark Z12 printer. If I reboot into OS9, I'm able to install the drivers from the cd and the printer works.(I've spent many frustrating hours downloading both the OS9 and the OSX drivers from the Lexmark website, but they just do not work when I'm in OSX.)
This is a bit of a drag as it means having to transfer documents between OSX and OS9 by emailing myself! My question is, if my printer works in OS9, is there no way of printing in OSX with Classic running?
Also, are there any dangers in switching between operating systems so frequently?
I should probably bite the bullet and buy a new printer but the one I have works perfectly well and I hate waste!
    Any suggestions gratefully received.
    Brendan

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
From what I can find online, it seems that the OS X drivers for your printer only work through OS X 10.2. Functionality of your printer was broken with OS X 10.3. Printing in Classic is not supported, according to what I've read.
You may find that buying a new printer is cost-effective if you compare the costs of replacement ink cartridges.
As far as I know, there is no hazard in switching between operating systems. Apple intended that it be used that way.

  • Printing from Classic on a non-os 9 printer

    Hi...
I hope you will tell me it will work...
I have a Samsung CLP-510 printer and there's no printer driver for OS 9. I want to print from Classic (on a Power Book G4). I need to use Classic because my whole invoice software is on this system. (yeah, I know...I know...)
There's no problem to install de Os X driver, so the printer will be installed on the computer. Will Classic have the printer installed too, even if i don't really install the os 9 driver? Will I be able to print directly from my software in Classic ?
    Many thanks for your help.
I need to know it before doing all this, that's why I'm asking you all.

    Probelm resolved.

  • Need help printing in classic to hp laserjet 3050

when I try to print a classic document it can't find my printer. I look in chooser and it's not there. I have both the mac os X 10.3.9 and the mac 9.1. No problems with os X

    Welcome To Discussions sweethart!
If this HP LaserJet 3050 All-in-One is the model, I don't see a driver available for OS 9 on that site.
Without a driver installed in OS 9, you can't print from Classic.
Maybe greg sahli, the printer guru, can offer an alternate means.

  • Need help printing in Classic to HP 1510

I'm helping a person with an early 2001 iMac (500 MHz, 384 MB RAM) who's running 10.2.8 and 9.2.2. She got an HP 1510 all-in-one printer/scanner, and I'm trying to get it set up. I installed the printer software for OS X and for 9.2.2 (while running under 9.2.2) I can print from a 9.2.2 application (like Word for Office 2001) while running under 9.2.2, and I can print from an OS X application, but I can't print from a Classic application under OS X!
When she tries to print from Office 2001 under Classic, the HP 1510 printer is found under "Page Setup" and "Print" in the Office 2001 application, the print job spools, but the Print Manager under Classic claims no printer is installed, and the Chooser under Classic can't find a USB-based printer under "HP Inkjet v6.6.1". This is where I found the USB-based printer when she was running 9.2.2. She has tried running the Desktop Printer Setup utility under Classic, but it doesn't see the USB-based HP 1510.
What do I need to do to enable printing under Classic?

    gave up.

  • Printing from Classic Using OS X Drivers

Shouldn't I be able to print from Classic using my Epson USB printer's OS X drivers (OS 9 drivers don't exist for this model)? I've tried opening the Chooser in Classic, but the printer doesn't show up.
    Thanks,
    Emily

Go to Chooser (while in a Classic App) and select LaserWriter 8 driver - even if there's no printer on the right.
When you want to print, the LaserWriter 8 print dialog comes up and you can select your OS X printers in the destination printer pull-down.
    Good luck.

  • Problem with printing from classic

I used to print things out from classic but somehow I can't print anymore. It tell me to go to chooser and choose the printer but I can't choose it. I tried to click on HP printer but no reponse. I tried to reinstall but no use. That reinstalling seems only appy to OS X, no affect on classics. Now what?
I use mostly os X but there are some files I need to print from classic appliction. Funnything is I was able to do it and somehow it does not do it anymore.

    Hi Soo Lee;
You are on the forum for Intel iMacs and in your original message you did state what system you had hence the reply that you can run "Classic" on an Intel iMac.
I would suggest that you report on the forum for PPC iMac instead.

  • Printing from Classic

I can no longer print from Classic (v 9.2)but printing from OS 10.1.5 is fine. Printing from Classic was not a problem until I tried to network my G4 with a PC. After several attempts, changing settings (airport, ethernet etc)I gave up and reset for printing in OS 10.
The printer is a Personal laserwriter 320. In classic when I print the message is Laserwriter 320 could not be found. I have tried changing settings etc. but can not get it to print.
    Any suggestions
    G4   Mac OS X (10.1.x)   Mac OS 9.2

I hope that's enough for someone else to now take this further…
An AsantéTalk ethernet to LocalTalk bridge should plug in and work with no configuration, so that shouldn't be part of the problem.
AppleTalk does need to be on, but it doesn't need zones; that's just a option for more sophisticated, managed networks.
You probably need to turn off all other networking, including AirPort, and I guess TCP/IP needs to be set to Configure: Manually, not Using DHCP, etc.
Pure, bootable OS 9 is what you invoked when you changed the startup disk to use the classic 9 which opened to the 9 desktop… as opposed to Classic, which bars some features so a cut-down version of OS 9 can run over X… the point here being that misconfiguration in X can effect 9 utilities, particularly at the level where peripherals including printers ineract with the system, and some things which perfectly happy in pure 9 are simply incompatible with Classic over X.

  • Default printer in classic environment

After upgrading to 10.4.4 the default printer in Classic is changed to the default printer in OSX.
If I want to print from a Classic application the first time before the print dialog is displayed I get an error message stating that apple events are not supported or that desktop printing is not installed. In the printer dialog that shows up my appletalk printer with the name I have given the printer in OSX is shown and when I select the os9 name printing is fine until classic restarts.
How can I select the default printer from wihtin Classic?

Guys, this should be a software problem with the system, so we should expect it would happen with all printers, with a Brother printer and also with a LaserWriter Pro (10+ years old!) but assuming that Cube does have identical symptoms to Erik there are at least two things going on here.
What it defaults to should be quite separate from those errors for AppleEvents and desktop printing software 2.0. Those seem to be about whether something is configured corrctly, not about what's selected.
If this is always solved by reselecting the correct printer, I'd grin and bare it.
However, with no other symptoms, those errors suggeset a mismatch or misconfiguration.
Some printers are much more fussy than they should be about the version of LaserWriter, and of auxilliary printing Extensions certainly including PrintingLib. The natural assumption is that the latest version will cover everything, but I've met printers which required downgrades…
Although I haven't seen this recently, for early Classic some printers needed their 9 drivers installing once while booted in pure 9, then again while running Classic over X - and if that's your case I hope your Macs are old enough to boot in pure 9.
With or without that, it may simply matter which order 9 and X drivers are installed in.
Again, are you using third-party RIP software? I don't know that desktop printing software 2.0 refers to anything from Apple and some time ago there was a spate of reports by people using a third-party utility with a name too like that to ignore, which no-one could find anywhere on the web but which turned out to refer to a third-party RIP that did work with 9 but never with Classic.
Meanwhile my Classic 9.2.2 over 10.4.4 on my G4 DP 1K defaults to the X printer but so does Classic 9.2.2 over 10.4.3 on my Titanium lappie, which seems to indicate this is not a 10.4.4 thing though I don't remember how the G4 behaved on 10.4.3 (and if I'd seen Cube's message one minute later, I would already have started the 10.4.4 updater running on the lappie. Phew!)
I very much doubt that can be solved: I suspect it's a design fault in the way Classic and X communicate and in my case I change printers so often that again, checking Chooser one extra time is hardly noticable.

  • Can't add my epson rx500 printer to OS 10.4, but it prints in classic

When I added a driver for a wireless card, it told me to first reset permissions. Now OS X will not let me add my Epson rx 500 printer and I can not print from OS X. The printer does print from classic. What can I do?

It sounds like you might have installed the OS 9 driver instead of the OS X driver. What happens when OS X will not let you add the printer?

  • Is it possible to print from classic?

Hi Folks! I've tried unsuccessfully for 3 years now to print from classic. If I really need to print from one of my OS9 apps I usually just put the file in the OS9 computer (that's why I keep it) and print from there by just unplugging the printer from the OSX computer and plugging it into the OS9 computer. It's not the drivers or the printer as all of that's installed. I suspect is has to do with print spooling and background printing but I've tinkered with this for a LOOOOOG time with no success. Tom

I suspect that you're using an HP inkjet. I have several HP inkjets, and all of them, without fail, simply refuse to print from Classic _using the HP drivers_. (Tiger fixed things so I can print. See below.) In all cases, attempting to print in the background works just fine, right up to where the spool file has been created and is about to actually go to the printer. I then get an error, on some printers, indicating that the file cannot be printer. On others, Classic simply either freezes or crashes. If I restart Classic, it'll freeze or crash again as soon as the print system attempts to print that file. If I delete the spool file, all is fine... except that I didn't get any output. The HPs started misbehaving with Panther. My Epson inkjet still works, so I suspect the problem ain't Apple's fault. The problem goes away if I boot the machine in OS 9... where it's possible to boot the machine in OS 9.
If I try to print from the foreground instead, I just move things up. Now I get the error message, freeze, or crash immediately instead of waiting for the spool file to be created.
That said, printing from Classic is simple... if you are not using a HP or Lexmark non-PostScript inkjet printer and are trying to print from Panther. (Jaguar and HP wasn't a good match, either, but at least sometimes you'd get output.) Given that most (not all, though...) Epson and Canon inkjets and all PostScript devices, even inkjets, were able to print, I suspect that HP's and Lexmarks' drivers have problems.
Tiger fixed the problems. In Tiger, Apple rigged it so that it doesn't matter if the vendors' drivers work or not, or even if they have OS 9 drivers, as long as they have _OS X_ drivers. In Tiger, the default is for printers in Classic to use the Apple LaserWriter 8 driver and pretend to be a PostScript device. The LW8 driver then hands off the output _to the proper OS X driver_, which then prints. You don't get features which aren't in the LW8 driver, but you do get output, including colour output. If you have an Epson inkjet, you can still use the Epson OS 9 driver... if Epson supplies one. It will usually work.
I suspect that you would be able to print from Classic just fine if you were using Tiger. You're using Panther. I suspect that you're not going to be upgrading at this late date.

  • Logo not printing in classical report

    hello friends,
i have displayed logo in classical report but while taking printout its not showing any image in printout.
    pls suggest.
    Regards,

    Hi Sunny,
Printing logo is not possible in classical using write statments, but it is possible using ALV grid.
Still you can refer to these links:-

  • Cannot Print to any Printer / Cannot Preview Print (Printing from Classic Reader Works)

I'm having the same problem noted here:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/989426?esab=a&as=aaq
I will check if reinstalling printers helps - note that I'm trying to print to a virtual pdf printer. However, as the title suggests, I have been successful in printing from the Classic Reader found by navigating as per:
more > view using the classic reader
Once in that mode Print Preview is available and Print reveals all the relevant printers and the one I selected worked.
I'm sure that this is not the design intent. Feedback would be useful.
I would also point out that the circuitous path to register for support is confusing. I found this bug report in my search to find a way in:
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=972269
It seems daft to raise a new question to an old problem when replying to an existing discussion would be less time consuming and more logical to my way of thinking - refer bug report (seems I'm not alone in that view).

If you select the email and then use:
'3bar menu icon' > 'Print' > 'Print Preview'... is this also greyed out?
    Have you tried...
    * deselect and then reselect the printer as default via Control Panel > Printers?
    * uninstall and then reinstall printer?
    Can you post this info:
    * In Thunderbird, Help > Troubleshooting Information
    * click on 'Copy text to clipboard'
    * then use Ctrl+V to paste into this question.

  • HP LaserJet 1300 won't print from Classic

I can’t print out of Classic environment because the printer (HP Laserjet 1300) isn’t installed there. My computer does not have dual boot. (That is, it can run classic, but not boot up in classic.) I've read some related posts and have tried some suggestions, but so far to no avail.
The installation CD has installation for OS 9 and OS 10 and I have installed both from the OS X environment. But there is still no HP Laserjet 1300 icon in the Chooser in the OS 9 environment. I should mention that when I went to chooser and clicked on Laserwriter 8 icon, I noticed that there was a place that said “Select a PostScript Printer” but there was no printers to be selected in the related field. I have been to Apple System Profiler in OS 9 and there is no driver listed there for my HP laserjet even though I have installed it.
When I click print I get a yellow ! message that says that my Document could not be printed because printer “LaserWriter could not be found. Try again?
This printer works fine from OS X, but not from classic. I called apple help and they said to go to the HP website. The HP website said the following:
“Installing a driver in Mac in classic mode
    2004/11
Installing an HP driver in MAC® classic mode may be useful: if, for example, an application you want to use is not supported by MAC OS X.
This functionality is supported by the PostScript and the raster drivers.
    Installing the driver
With the latest version of the drivers, the installer already foresees separate MAC OS 9 and OS X installation. On MAC OS X, run the OS 9 installation and it will install in classic mode.”
    MY QUESTION:
How do I “run the OS 9 installation”? What buttons do I press to do this?
    Thanx in advance
    Fred

froellig, two wholly different things here.
Looking at the 9 driver for LaserJet 1300 HP offers for download, anyway, it isn't actually a driver - it's merely an installer which, from either X or 9, should give you Printer Description Files to use with the standard PostScript drivers, namely LaesrWriter 8 or AdobePS.
Test that it did that much by using Apple's Desktop Printer Utility to create a virtual desktop printer… If the Change button in PostScript Printer Definition (PPD) File pane leads to a Printer Descriptions list that does include HP LaserJet 1300 Series that much, at least, seems to have worked.
If the printer works from OS X, then you could use LaserWriter 8 in Classic to Print to File, which would give you .ps files which you could manually drag into any X print queue. This works for most printers.
The other thing is that yes, LaserWriter should show the 1300 in the right-hand Chooser pane so again, can X see it and print to it?
If not that suggests a cable or hardware fault, bad settings or interference from other software.
If X can see and use the printer, and there are no other faults with Classic 9, that suggests something inside OS 9 is interfering.

  • Printing to a Shared Printer in Classic programs

I searched for an answer to this and could not find anything so I am going to appeal for help. I have a Color LaserJet connected via USB to a G4 machine that is sharing the printer. The sharing works fine, all of my machines can access it. The problem occurs when users try to print from some of the older programs that we have that run in Classic mode. When we try and print from these programs, I cannot find the shared printer. I tried to access it via the chooser but had no luck. I will admit that I am not very familiar in navigating or using Classic or any version of OS9 so it is very possible that I am missing something very easy, but I would much apppriciate it if someone could point out what that is. Thanks!!
    Joe

You need to install printer drivers on the Classic side for the printer you are using. Your Classic installation also needs to have the necessary extensions for USB installed. The following may also help:
