Printing in PSE 4.0 vs 8.0

Having used Photoshop Elements 4.0 for some time, I recently decided it was time to upgrade to Version 8.0 which I did about a few weeks ago.
My photo printer is an Epson Artisan 800 which I am very happy with.
When I print with Version 4.0, my printed photos are spot on color and excellent.  However, when I print the exact same photo with Version 8.0, the printed photo is much too dark and totally unacceptable.
I bought Barbara Brundage's book "The Missing Manual" for PSE 8.0 and read the section on Color Management and tried changing some settings but it didn't seem to help.  There must be some differences in the settings between the two versions but I cannot seem to figure them out.
I just want my photos to print in 8.0 like they do in 4.0.
Can anyone help please?
Thank you.
Alan

Hi Barbara ..
The colors seem OK now (don't know why)... but now I get equally spaced vertical lines with PSE 8. See the attachement.  I scanned in two photos ....  the top image was printed from PSE8 and the bottom from PSE 4.
In the top image .. notice the vertical line going the front leg of the table and thru the top of my grandson's hand.  Those are the most discernable in the scans I made but they are thru the entire width of the photo equally spaced apart.
Notice that the bottom photo made with PSE 4 is perfect ... no lines at all.
BTW .. just to be sure it wasn't a computer problem, I tried PSE 8 on two computers .. one running XP and the other running Windows 7.  Results are the same.
Also, I get the same results no matter what the color settings seem to be and I tried all three.
You're thoughts?
Does Adobe have a website where I can send these these pics and ask them?
I'm really frustrated.
Thanks
Alan

  • Printing with PSE 8 for Mac

    Hi,
hope some of you may give me some help.
Have tried to print with PSE 8 for Mac, but in the printing options there is none where i can choose the type of paper (ie: glossy, premium glossy....).
My printer is an Epson Stylus Photo 1400.
It works fine with iPhoto, here i can choose paper type. And prints come out fine.
    Thanks for any advice,
    dangerly

My printer is a Canon so not entirely sure if this helps but when I print from PSE 8 I do not get to choose the media type until I have clicked on the print button in the PSE dialog box. I am then presented with the dialog box for my printer where I can set the media type amongs other attributes.
It is normal for the media type to be the job of the printer driver so perhaps it is the same for your printer.

  • Problems with HP printer and PSE 11 (was bill v)

When using my HP 7020e photosmart printer and Adobe photoshop elements 11, I get a very small white border on the prints. I have set for borderless printing. Adobe says the print size is 4.2 x 6.18 instead of 4 x 6. Any suggestions?

I had already set it to borderless but it still prints a very small white
border. HP had no solution. I am ready to send the printer back to them.

  • Problems with color printing in PSE 6.0

I have installed a HP Premium Photosmart All-in-One Printer. It prints pictures with excellent picture and quality color when I print from My Pictures. The picture and color quality when I print from PSE Organizer is very poor. I have Color Management set to Adobe RGB. Can anyone give suggestions on what I need to do so I can print good, quality photos from Organizer? I appreciate any ideas.

There are various opinions on how to deal with this problem. Try this:
Print from Editor. Yes, the experts assert that the print engine differs between editor and organizer.
    Calibrate your monitor
    In Editor, Color settings>sRGB
In printer setup>properties>print space>same as source. The idea here is that you do not want both Elements and the printer to manage the color output.

  • Borderless printing from PSE 7 Editor

Having some trouble printing borderless 4x6 images from the Editor in PSE 7, (I prefer printing from the Editor over the Organizer due to its higher quality output).  I've tried a myriad of different settings from the Elements print dialogue window and am unable to consistently print images without some border being present, either just on one side, or on a top and side together.  Sometimes I can successfully print without the borders, but then when using the same settings on another image, I'm frustrated to see some type of border return.  The image in the print preview window will also vary from one image to the next, sometimes with borders, and sometimes without, however even when no borders are present in the preview, they'll still be there sometimes in the print. Never had a problem like this with Elements 4; using an Epson R1900, with printer driver set to borderless. If anyone else has encountered this, or has suggestions on what to do, I'd love to hear from you.  Thanks!

Yes seems this is a bug. I will try using printing in PSE 8.0 when it will be released.

  • Failure to print from PSE 9.0 on MAC to Epson XP-800

I cannot print photographic images with my desktop MAC (OS X10.8.4) from Photoshop Elements 9.0 to my new Epson XP-800 printer. Printing is not a problem with Word text or images from iPhoto- it is only with PSE that there is a problem.  The problem persists even if I try using a cabled connection rather than WiFi.  I have ensured latest software from Epson has been downloaded.  This problem did not occur when using the same system with the previous printer (Epson Photo Stylus 1290).
Any suggestions for solving this rather than just a workaround of moving the edited PSE image back to iPhoto & printing from there (which admittedly does work but shouldn't be necessary).
    Grateful for any help.

    Hi Barbara B
Thanks very much for this suggestion.
I followed this advice, both deletions and permission repairs.  This did allow me to print from PSE for the first time - very pleased with this.  Unfortunately the colour reproduction has now gone haywire (having been very good) and there are vertical lines on prints - this now applies to both PSE & iPhoto (the latter worked well before)
Any further suggestions?  I feel we are close to cracking it but do not really understand what to try next. Please help if you can. Many thanks.

  • Color prints in PSE 9 not accurate.

    Hello,
I've been having trouble printing color prints with PSE 9.  They appear kind of pale or less vivid (unacceptably so), the colors are just not as they appear on my monitor.  I'm using an Epson R2880, iMac 10.6.8.   It prints b&w beautifully.  I've been through Epson tech support, checked nozzles and cleaned heads.  While speaking with Espon they suggested I print from another application, so I tried using iPhoto, colors came out accurately there.  I happen to still have PSE 8 still on my computer, so I attempted to print from there, the colors were also more accurate there (and that's without using the ICC profiles I have in PSE 9 ).  It seems the issue is unique to PSE 9.  I've tried changing my color setting, typically I have it set to AdobeRGB, but have tried "no color management".  I have my monitor calibrated, use proper ICC profiles for any papers I use (and have tried multiple papers).  Any suggestions on what the issue may be?

As well as having PSE set to AdobeRGB, is the image also set to that colour space (It will have an asterisk after the color setting  - RGB/8*)?
    Have you tried sRGB settings?
I note your comment about the ICC Profiles but quickly checking my Scott Kelby PSE7 book  he says he uses an R2880 but that it didn't install color profiles for all the Epson papers. Have you been to Epsons website and downloaded and installed ALL the appropriate profiles?
    Cheers,
    Neale

  • "Program Error"  While trying to print in PSE 9

Download and installed updates to PSE 9.0, Now 9.03. While in PSE mode I can no longer print images to Epson Photo R2880 or HP J4680. I can print to both printers using HP Media Smart Photo application, but if I attempt to print from PS Elements I get the following "could not print (image title) because of program error". I have since uninstalled the upgrade to PSE 9.03, I have also  done a system restore all to no avail. I still can't print while in PSE. Any experience with this? Any resolution ? Help !!!

  • Default image to print in PSE 9

In PSE 9 editor, if you have multiple images in the project bin, one of them has a blue box around it, and it's not necessarily the active one in the edit window. If you go to print the image you're working with (the active one), PSE will instead want to print the one with the blue box. So you have to close the print dialog, select the correct image, and start the print process again. This is asinine. How do I set up PSE 9 so it will default to print the active image?
    Thanks

Well, I usually work with the project bin closed so the active image is larger. I'm trying to get away from having to do what you're saying. After all, "the one I want" is the one I'm working on.
I can't figure out why in the world they even did that; why would I want to print a different image from the one I'm currently working on?!!! I mean, how many people say, "Okay, this one looks pretty good, so now I think I'll print one that I was working on an hour ago?" If I want to print my current image along with a different one, why not let me add the other one? That makes sense; the current method makes none at all.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • Problems printing from PSE 11 on Windows 8

I have not had a problem with printing until this week. I cropped an image 6 by 4, chose 6 by 4 paper, selected borderless and got a 1cm white border. The image did not fill the preview window, so it is not a border problem. I have to use the slider to enlarge the preview image. Why???

    Of course!
I have been a PSE user since version 2 and have been through Epson and Canon A3 printers for the last 8 years.
The problem has only manifested itself in the past few days.  The white space around the image is far too large to be a border that is obtained by choosing a border in the print options.
As you can see from my screenshot the preview is also wrong. The print mechanism merely reproduces what you see on the screen.

  • Photo placement when printing in PSE 8.0

In PSE 6.0 I was able to adjust where my 6X4 photo was positioned on an 8.5 X 11photo sheet to maximize the use of the paper. How is that done in PSE 8.0? It always centers the photo on the sheet and I cannot find the setting to change that.

No, you can't change it. This is one of the "improvements" in PSE 8. Create a new blank file the size of the paper you normally use for printing, at the resolution you normally use, and save this as your printing template. Then when you want to print, copy/paste the photo you actually want to print into this file and use the move tool to put it where you want it.

  • Print Position PSE 8

I've recently installed PSE 8 and am having difficulty changing print position on the Print page. I previously used PSE 6 and it was very simple to uncheck the Center box under Print Position and have the capability of moving the photo around on the page prior to printing. All the margins were all shown. Am I just overlooking this option with PSE 8?

I am with all the other guys.   another step is not what this product should be providing.  I thought it was suppose to make things simpler and easier. not adding steps for those of us who found elements to do 90% plus of what photoshop does.  I have 150 plus images all set up to print with a deeper bottom.   PSE used to remember the previous position on the page.  what do I do now?
I have sent in my comments to adobe.
    thanks

  • Dark prints in PSE 10

When printing with a Cannon Pixma MG 8250 I have to increase the brightness by 50-60 to come anywhere near the colours on the screen, Using Elements 10.
(thread title edited by forum host)

In such cases most of the time the issue is in handling of color management.
Please make sure that you have handled the color management of PSE correctly.
For color management handling do the following:
Scenario 1. If you're known and familiar to your printer profile, the type of paper you are using and if you have any other customization done for your printer profile then in this case please select Photoshop Elements Manages Color in Color Handling drop down under color management of PSE.
To achieve this, follow these following steps.
    1. Launch Print dialog.
    2. Click on "More Options..." button.
    3. Now select Color management.
    4. Here you can see the Color Handling drop down. Please select Photoshop Elements Manages Color.
    5. Select paper size, paper type and do other settings and then click OK.
    Now print.
But note that if you are using this option, make sure the color management of your Printer is off. To know how to off the color management of your printer, please see check your printer document.
Scenario 2. In case you want your printer to handle all color management then please select Printer Manages Color in Color Handling drop down. Then do other settings as discussed in above scenario and print your image.
    Hope this will help you

  • Cannot Print fom PSE 9

Hi there. First time using this forum. Hope someone can help.  When I select print in editor I get a box with the following message:   BEFORE YOU CAN PERFORM PRINT RELATED TASKS SUCH AS PAGE SETUP OR PRINTING A DOCUMENT YOU NEED TO INSTALL A PRINTER.  I have three printers installed; two wirelessly and one wired.  What does the message mean or am I being really stupid.  I can print to any printer from any other program just not PSE 9

Have you installed the latest printer drivers for your printers?
There are two things to try (neither is guarranteed to fix the problem):
Reset the PSE Preferences:  Hold down your Ctrl+Alt+Shift keys when launching the Editor until you get the prompt asking if you want to delete the Preferences.  Answer "Yes" and they will be re-built to the default settings.  You may have to minimize any open windows to see that prompt.
In the Editor print a test photo using the "Microsoft XPS Document Writer" as the printer.  Then close PSE.  When you start PSE again, choose your wired printer and see if it works.

  • Dark prints with PSE 10

My prints look fine on my screen but print too dark.  I've spent time lowering the brightness on my iMac monitor, calibrating the monitor, tried every combination of Photoshop managing the print, the printer (Epson1900) managing printing, Adobe 1998, sRGB, Relative Rendering, Perceptual, ad nauseum.
The only improvement has occurred when I switched having PSE manage color management to having the R1900 manage it, which is the opposite from all the conventional wisdom I've read on the web.  I use Epson paper and Epson print cartridges and the appropriate paper handling/profiles.
The only acceptable workaround I've used is increase the brightness in PSE editor and then print letting the R1900 manage things.  The prints are acceptable even though they are too bright on the display.  Very frustrating.

Thansk Colin for the feedback.  Most of the advice on the web indicates to use Adobe as the color space.  I've also used the paper specific color profile for the Epson R1900, no change.
This is from Adobe Tech support, January 2010 re: PSE 8.  I copied and pasted this from Elements Village website.  The workaround was to let the printer manage color.
Thank you for contacting Adobe Technical Support.
After consulting with my colleagues about the issue you raised, I can let you know the following:
The issue is both on our as well as the driver software side and the workaround we have given is the best available at this time. This issue is affecting all printers, not just Epson or Canon.
The soft proofing effect that you are seeing in the print preview is indeed an attempt at soft proofing. However since Photoshop Elements managed prints are incorrectly double colour managed it is not as useful as it was initially designed.
As to the exact details o f why this occurred, we have no official information.
We believe that this will resolve the issues you are experiencing, however, should the reply not help solve the problem, please contact us again, quoting the case number given above, and we will re-open the case.

    Subject: Re: Adobe TS #180107025 / Mario / PSE6 oversaturated Print (KMM3793441I51L0KM)
    Dear Mr. Laugesen,
We have had word back from our engineers regarding your issue.
The Photoshop Elements team are aware of the problem and are working with Apple and the printer manufacturers to get this to work correctly. In the meantime, the only workaround is to switch off colour management in Photoshop Elements and let the printer handle the colour management.
Unfortunately we can not make an estimation as to when a fix will be provided. We will close the case for the time being as there really is nothing more we can do about this issue besides offering the suggested workaround. Closing this case does not mean that the research will stop however and the engineers are working on a solution to this.
