Printing in Tiger

I recently relocated and am looking for a job. I transferred all my resumes
from my floppies to a USB flash disk which would be better in my situation.
Unfortunately I am still using Office98 on my ibook G4 with Tiger. Whenever
I print (and in this case I must print to a ps file and fax with FaxStf X).
It always complains about my fancy border I have on each of my resumes,
cover letters, ref lists. As a result the page border is clipped. This can
be a huge problem, as the page border is there to make my Resume stand out.
I'd love to buy Office X and since it supports the FaxSTF drivers I could
fax directly, but since I am low on budget at this time I have to live with
Office98.
Is there a way to fix this so that when Word 98 saves my resumes to a ps
file and OSX opens these files I can see the border?
Thanks,
John
I appreciate the advice but there are some problems.
"The other common problem (particularly on the Macintosh) is that you are formatting the document for a printer that is different to the one you are actually sending the document to."
Yes this is my situation and really not my fault. For some reason the HP DeskJet 840C classic printer driver under OSX is different than the printer driver under OS 8-9. However the OSX printer driver is the real printer. Yes I can print within classic, but I do not have all the options and features that I did when I owned my Performa 6360 under OS 9.1.
I believe the fix would be to upgrade to Office X, but I cannot afford such an upgrade at this time. So the workaround would be to cut the page borders (some employers like them and others could care less) or post this question in the OSX apple forums.
John

Why not try one of the Open Source replacements for Office X or Word:
AbiWord - an Open Source Word look-a-like that reads/writes Word files.
NeoOfficeJ - an Open Source replacement for Office
OpenOffice - another Open Source replacement for Office that includes a database. Requires the X11 sub-system be installed for OS X (it's an optional install on the Tiger DVD.)
All are available at www.freesmug.org or www.versiontracker.com.
If you happen to have Apple's iWork you can use Pages. As for faxing Tiger has built-in fax capability or you can use the shareware fax programs, PageSender or Fax Center (www.versiontracker.com.)

  • Can I print to an OS-Classic compatible printer using Tiger?

My husband works in an office that recently brought in a Sharp DM-4551 copier/printer. He takes our Powerbook G4 running Tiger to work and so far hasn't been able to find a way to print. The only drivers we can find online are for Windows or OS Classic.
I did download the OS Classic driver, and even installed the OS Classic environment in hopes of then installing the driver. If I'm able to complete the installation, is it possible to then print from OS X applications? Or will it only be possible to print from OS Classic applications?
On a side note, I have been stalled in my installation of the OS Classic driver. The Classic environment seems to work just fine. The driver and all its documentation is in a folder on my desktop. When I open it and run the installer, a box pops up asking me to insert the installation disk. There is no disk, but all that would be on a disk is in that folder on my desktop. I can't figure out how to tell the installer to look at the desktop folder instead of looking for a disk. It won't continue the installation without insertion of a disk. I tried burning the install folder onto a CD and inserting the CD when the installer asked for a disk, but somehow it guessed that this was not the original installation disk, and wouldn't take it.
This is really obnoxious to not be able to print from Tiger to this Sharp DM-4551. Please, please please, is anyone who can help??! We would be so grateful to get this issue fixed!!

Okay so I downloaded Gimp Print (now called GutenPrint) and installed the latest version. I even found the Sharp DM-4551 in the list of printers when I went to set up the driver. The hangup is now in filling in the appropirate information. What I mean is that when I set up the printer driver using GutenPrint, I'm asked for protocol, IP address and Queue name. For protocol, I chose IP, as stated in the GutenPrint directions. The IP address I obtained from another user in the office who prints to the DM-4551 with her Dell with no problems. I'm stuck on Queue, though, and can't get any further without knowing what goes in that blank. I've tried leaving it blank, and entering "lp" as instructed in the GutenPrint documentation. When I try to print, it says it's connecting and then never can connect to the printer. It finally just times out. Where do I find what to enter for "queue"?

  • Pages '08 Arabic doc prints in Tiger, not Leopard

I have a Pages '08 doc that is a mix of Arabic and English characters which will not print fully in Leopard but prints fine in Tiger (on either a Xerox Phaser 4400n or an HP LaserJet 4200n). The printer prints a blank page or, occasionally, a PostScript error. It seems that the trouble is specific to the characters in this doc, as other Arabic docs print fine, even under Leopard. I've been able to get parts of the unprintable doc to print by selectively deleting text, but I wasn't able to narrow down exactly what the offending characters or strings were.
Deleting and re-adding the printer and updating the HP printer drivers didn't help. Any suggestions on where I could look for error logs, fixes, further troubleshooting?

I have a Pages '08 doc that is a mix of Arabic and English characters
Pages often messes up Arabic text, especially when mixed with English, and it is normally recommended to use a different app for such things (Mellel is the best). Is your text known to be correct?

  • Can't print from Tiger to a shared printer on Mountain Lion

    Hello,
I have a branch office that's running Mountain Lion on one computer and Tiger on the other.  How can I print from the Tiger machine to a shared printer on the Mountain Lion computer?  I should point out that this isn't a problem when the printer is shared from the Tiger machine, just the other way around.
    Thanks,

  • Can't get a good print with Tiger - Epson R300

    Hi, I have a year old imac - tiger - photoshop CS3 -
I have a printer Epson R300 that worked Great! with my older mac/older photoshop.
I have tried many things to try to get a decent print.
I scan in paintings using bright colors with lots of details in the color.
All the prints come out not great, when this printer used to give me beautiful prints with older mac.
Am I barking up the wrong tree?
Does the R300 just not cut it with this new spiffy computer?
I wish i never got rid of my other computer. It was slow, but great.
I have done considerable research and tried things and made notes on my prints. All prints are substandard from my point of view.
Any help would be appreciated. I need the step by step help.
I'm not that good at computers.
    thanks!

Odds are very high that the problem is not with your OS (assuming you are on 10.4.11), your Mac or the Epson printer (assuming that you have recently downloaded and re-installed the very latest Epson driver).
Odds are that your color management setup is flawed. Carefully follow the steps at

  • Printing from tiger to win2k3 print server in AD

    Hiya all
I have a win2k3 domain to with a couple of win2k3 print servers, we have mostly win xp boxes but have a Mac population of about 100-140.
I am having problems printing to the print server from a Tiger workstation, it is a full member of the AD domain and will pre-authentiucate me to shares no problem, if add a printer listed under 'open directory' or browse to the print serve then select the server it all goes through fine and the print is then listed.
When you run a print job it comes up with the error:
Unable to connect to samba host, will retry in 60 secs.
    Connection failed with error
    NTSTATUS_ACCESSDENIED
I am using the Tiger AD client not AdmitMac so it is a all apple install..
    Anybody have any ideas?
    Thanks
    Laurence
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hiya All
Have solved myself, It is a bug in the AD client in that it does pre-authenticate samba shares on AD domain machines but NOT print shares on the same machines..
It has been reported but as to when it will be fixed...
The way round it is manually map them.
Go into print and fax then add a printer.
click the more printers button, change the top drop down to windows printing then change the other drop down to network neighbourhood.
select your AD domain from the list and then scroll down to your print server and click choose.
You will then be prompted for a username and password, enter your domain username and password (no domain prefix needed) and tick the option for the keychain.
Select the appropriate print share and change the make and model to reflect the printer.
click add and thats job done.
The only caveat I will add to this is that when your domain password expires and you change it this obviously will invalidate the connection, this means you must delete the keychain and re-add the printer.
    Thanks
    Laurence

  • Epson Printing with Tiger 10.4.11

Thought I'd enlist the help of the "heavy hitters" of this forum...
You may know of this problem, but I just became aware of it. Upon reactivating my trusty Epson Stylus Color 1160 printer this week (and a long while since upgrading from Panther), I discovered that the Epson printer drivers no longer work, nor does the Epson Print Utility (which is supposed to be used for alignment, head cleaning and nozzle test).
It means that, because I'm running a PowerPC machine, I can no longer print my valuable archives of large scale high resolution Southwest photos... which I have optimized for certain ICC Color Profiles in ColorSync.
Epson tells me they're no longer supporting the software for the 1160 and they refuse to help, other than to refer me to use the GIMP Print drivers that shipped with OS X 10.4.11.
No offense to Apple or SourceForge (who make these drivers), but this solution is laughable. First of all, I can't find any ColorSync facility built into the GIMP interface in Tiger; and, secondly, the print image size in the GIMP drivers seems to be seriously bolloxed (as my 13" x 19" test printout printed at 8-1/2" x 11" EXCEPT for a 3/8" band in the middle that was actually 13" x 19").
Yes, I have downloaded, but not yet installed the most recent GIMP drivers ("GutenPrint") from sourceforge, but have to admit I don't have the confidence to apply them...
Please let me know any thoughts and recommendations... Thanks!

BDAqua, thanks for your kind and generous response.
1.) "Since it's a Dual Boot, can you use the OS9 drivers?"
Beats me... I print from Photoshop 7. I can't remember if the program runs under OS 9; nor do I know if running Photoshop under Tiger would let me select an OS 9 printer driver, in lieu of a Tiger driver.
2.) "Does this old OSX driver work?"
It's the same one I had installed under Panther (and the one Epson is still offering), but it doesn't show up at print time.
    3.) "Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4... "
Not sure if this is the ticket -- I surmise the installation of Tiger installs the GIMP drivers, in precedence to the Epson (1.2Ba) driver -- or at least somehow the Tiger print routine won't invoke the old Epson Driver (which I never uninstalled).
4.) " ...I wouldn't be surprised that you could use a later Epson Driver and/or habd edit the PPD to the correct dimensions."
Wow. I assume such editing would exceed my skills (and I'm not familiar with the term "habd"). Are there instructions, somewhere?
5.) "If it uses 4 inks perhaps the Epson WorkForce 1100 Wide-format Printer driver would work?"
A creative thought. I've never looked into the structure of PPDs (or drivers), and have been assuming that either a.) the literal printer name would govern invocation of the code, or b.) Epson might have told me if another set of drivers and utilities might work, or c.) if they abandoned updating their 1160 software for Tiger and PowerPC, they well might have thrown the rest of their printers overboard, as well. I'll try to look into this...
Why can't life be simple, the way it used to be... *:=)
After a series of e-mail love letters back and forth between myself and the company, today I asked Customer Relations for the address of the CEO in Japan, so I could ship my boat anchor back to him, personally.

  • Can't print after Tiger update

I updated from Panther to Tiger 10.4 today, and then did an update to 10.4.6.
Now I can't print. Tried "Save to PDF" from the File>Print menu. Nothing. Tried clicking on the "print" button. Nothing.
The Apple knowledge base only says something about deleting a Xerox plugin, which I didn't have, so I couldn't do that.
Anyone know what's going on? Thanks!

Not unusual to have this problem if you had printers installed before upgrading. Open the Printer Setup app and select "Reset Printing System" from the File menu. Then reinstall your printers. If still no joy, you might want to check your printer's mfgr's website for new (10.4) drivers.

  • NT_STATUS_NO_MEMORY errors when printing in Tiger to Windows printers

I cannot print to any windows printers using Tiger 10.4.4
Here is a list of printers I have tried:
HP Laserjet 4100N served from Windows 2003 server.
Xerox Docucenter 2240 PS served from Windows 2003 server.
HP Laserjet 4000N served from Windows 2003 server.
Samsung ML-1710 served from Windows XP Professional workstation.
I will get either one of the following errors:
    NTSTATUS_LOGONFAILURE
    NTSTATUS_NOMEMORY
This happens both at home (the XP workstation) and at work (the win2K3 server). None of the Macs at work (6 all running tiger) can print to any of the printers, they all could print under OS 10.3.9.
Something seems really broken with the Samba printing subsystem.
I can mount fileshares off the same machine with the same credentials so I'm quite confident it is not an authentication issue.
I also have no difficulty finding the printer, I simply cannot print to it.
I have used native drivers and gimp-print drivers all with no success.
Also note that gimp-print drivers do not work on Intel based Macs (they just crash).

I can't use the HP JetDirect protocol for some odd reason it fails to connect when I specify the IP address of the printer.
I get a NTSTATUS_NOMEMORY error printing to the LaserJet 4000N next to my office using the SAMBA printing mechanism. This occurrs with every Mac in the building.
It would be really nice if Apple could update the samba version to the latest release from samba.org to at least see if this fixes the issue.
From the looks of these forums, there appears to be plenty of problems with Windows printers with the 10.4.4 update.

  • Help Printing from Windows 7 to shared printer on Tiger/Mac Mini

UGH! My folks have long been running on a Power PC Mac Mini with Tiger. The Mac has an Epson Stylus CX4200 - works great in this configuration. Unfortunately, we have a need to implement a laptop with Windows 7 running. I'd like to print to the Mac's locally-attached printer from the wirelessly-connected laptop.
Anyone know how to configure windows 7 to print to the shared printer attached to the Mac? Any help, greatly appreciated.
    - Brad

    Hello Brad,
If you download and install Bonjour for Windows onto the Windows 7 laptop, this will assist you with finding the printer being shared by the Mac.
Note that the web page does not mention Win7 support, but since Vista is supported there should not be an issue.
I also cannot ever remember using it when I had Tiger on a Mac, so not 100% of it functioning correctly (certainly works when printer is shared by 10.5 and 10.6).
In case it doesn't work, you could manually add the printer queue on Win7. The connection used by Bonjour for Windows is IPP and you will need to know the IP address or name of the Mac sharing the printer. You will also need to know the name set for the Epson, which can be found via the Print & Fax pane.
    The network queue name on the Win 7 laptop needs to be;
    http://maccomputer_name.local:631/printers/PrinterName
    or
    http://IPaddress_of_mac:631/printers/PrinterName
Then for the Printer Manufacturer and Model you can select the HP Color Laserjet 4550 PS. Don't worry about selecting a PostScript (ie PS) driver. Even though your printer probably does not support PostScript, the Mac will convert the incoming PS spool file into the appropriate format used by the Epson.

  • Laserwriter Select Printer won't print in Tiger OS 4.10

I have a PowerPC G4 computer newly updated from 9.2 to Tiger OS 4. 10. My Laserwriter Select 360 is connected to the computer by Asantetalk, which then plugs to the computer.
Tiger will connect to the printer and it seems to print but nothing happens. There are no errors either.
I have checked all of the cables and they are correct. Everything worked great prior to the upgrage.
Asante does not have any information on OS 4.10 either.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

I suggest you buy a USB-parallel adapter cable. Caveat - I'm not sure that will help. You need to figure out if the Asante or printer are at fault (by using with another computer), and next after that will be generic OS X fixes, like:
Boot from install DVD and repair the hard drive.
Download the Combo updater and re-update OS X.
Try Printer Setup Repair from www.fixamac.net.

  • Tabloid Printing Problems - Tiger and HP 9800

A brief scan of topics relating to "tabloid printing" seems to indicate that problems printing at this size are not entirely uncommon.
I'm having such an issue with a customer running Tiger on a MacBook Pro, trying to print architectural PDFs on an HP 9800. No matter what paper size is selected, what scaling percentage is chosen, the PDF invariably prints out "zoomed in" - that is, missing vital information (name of project, date, name of designer, etc.) normally located on the right-most edge of the page, as is common with drafting and design documents. At letter size, the 9800 prints flawlessly.
It would seem that the error lies in HP's driver. I've heard of GIMP drivers being viable in situations such as this, but have never used them. Any recommendations or workarounds?
    Thanks, folks...
    -Darren

perhaps I am having a similar issue...trying to connect an HP 7200 All-in-One via TCP/IP...when I go to "Add" in the Printer Setup Utility, and click on "More Printers..." i get: "Printer Setup Utility has unexpectedly quit". Any advice?

  • TCP/IP printing on Tiger 10.4.11 stopped working

Shortly after a batch of updates via Software Updates it was discovered that a G4 iBook running 10.4.11 was no longer able to print to any TCP/IP printers. Attempts with printing results in error messages like "Printer busy; retry in 30 seconds", or the print job simply disappearing from the printer queue.
The printers (Canon MX700 and Samsung ML-2510 via Ethernet->USB adaptor) have been printing to these and older printers since the first day the iBook was bought from the Apple store. Deletions and additions of the printers in the Print & Fax section of System Preferences has not fixed the problem.
We even re-installed Tiger twice with the first install "Archive & Install" and the second one "Erase & Install" with the "zero erase" option. The problem still exists.
Any guesses as to the fix or possible workarounds are greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
The error message could indicate that the Mac and the printers are no longer configured on the same IP subnet. The subnet is determined by the subnet mask. With a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, the first three sets of numbers in the IP address is the subnet. The last number is the network address. For example, an IP address of 10.0.1.5 has a subnet of 10.0.1 and a network address of 5. For the Mac and the printer to be able to communicate with each other, the subnet needs to be the same for both devices.
If the IP subnet is correctly configured for all devices then you can use the Ping facility within Network Utility to check there is path from the Mac to the printers. With Ping selected, enter the IP address of the MX700 and set the number of Pings to 4. Then press the Ping button and see if you get a reply, something similar to the following...
    Ping has started...
    PING 10.0.1.5 (10.0.1.5): 56 data bytes
    64 bytes from 10.0.1.5: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.410 ms
    64 bybes from 10.0.1.5: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.323 ms
    64 bytes from 10.0.1.5: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.363 ms
    64 bytes from 10.0.1.5: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.315 ms
If you don't get a response from either printer then it is likely that your network port is faulty on the Mac. If you do get a response from either printer then you could look at adding the printer queues again. Note that for the Canon, you will need to have the Canon IJ Network Utility installed and running. To then add the printer, you need to select More Printers > Canon IJ Network.

  • Printer in Tiger

First, all is still working fine in Panther. Since I moved to an additional hard drive with Tiger installed in the same CPU as Panther, I can compare the hard drive systems. I noticed that there is no folder in Tiger for "applications (Mac OS 09). I am using a G4 that allows me to boot from either OS 9 or OS X, which I can still do. My OS9, however, is on a separate hard drive than Panther and I never used the build in OS9 that came with Panther; all works fine as I have it set up.
The reason for my question about the Application (Mac OS 9) is, I am having a hard time getting my Epson Stylus Photo R200 printer to work in Tiger the way it worked in Panther and am wondering if the non-existent file could be the problem. And, what would happen if I simply copied it over from Panther into Tiger?

  • Printing from Tiger to Ubuntu linux machine

    Hi,
I have an iMac with Tiger installed on it and a PC with Ubuntu linux installed. My printer (HP photosmart) is connected to the linux machine and prints fine. I have a home network with a Belkin wireless router.
I used to be able to print to the printer from the iMac, through the router when the PC had WinXP installed. When i try it now, i get a Samba connection error.
Is there something i need to change on the Mac to get it to work through linux?
    Many thanks.

You don't need to mess with samba, or create users, etc. to print to a Linux box. OS X can print right to CUPS. Just replace your /etc/cups/cupsd.conf in Linux with this one below, and browse to the network printer under OS X print utility to add it.
    # /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
    # Simple CUPS configuration file for a print server
