Printing InDesign to PDF with missing links

I received a document with lots of missing links for images (and I don't have access to those images)
- but when I printed it to a PDF the images are all there - how can this be?  - not that I'm complaining when something works - but need to understand why it worked.  Thanks for any help

If it looks like the stop sign with the ? of doom you are just printing the proxy. If it looks like the Mac PICT icon it is embedded. If there is nothing it is linked and useable. One can generally export a pdf regardless of whether it is the best idea.
There is a 4th type of way to put an image in that doesn't show anywhere, though I'm not aware of how that works in terms or breakage. That's likely what you are getting from Word. It is not best practices as it can lead to file corruption when document bloat gets too big, but in small doses where nothing is color critical it isn't gonna hurt anything.

  • Export to pdf with missing links

I recieved a indesign document with a few missing links on some small thumbnails. Is there any way to embed pictures with already missing links?
    using ID CS5
    Thanks

PDF export is a background task by default in CS5, so it can look like nothing is happening for a while (or it could be stalled). Open the Background Tasks panel and see if anything is really going on.

ya downloaded the trial version of acrobat. I guess it was free earlier and never faced a problem.
Acrobat has NEVER been free. Reader (formerly called "Acrobat Reader") has always been free, but the Creation/Editing software has always had a price tag.

  • Merging pdfs with internal links

I have merged 2 pdfs with internal links. After they were merged the bookmarks work but the links in the text do not. Any help on this?

    Hi NovaRbt,
Could you please let me know what version of Acrobat and OS are you using.
How have you merged the two PDFs?
Are those links opening perfectly in the individual PDFs?
    Please let me know.

We've setup the Adobe Document Server and can print to a pdf with BI 7.0 NW04s SP13 . Now I need to change the template or settings for the pdf output to add report title and the company logo. It doesn't seem to be one of the standard templates set in the IMG .

  • Issue with printing Indesign exported PDF in Chrome

I have created a file in CS6 and exported it to a two sided PDF. This PDF works when printing from the PDF.
I have uploaded it as a document link on a website and when clicking on the link it opens in a separate window. If people use Internet Explorer or download the file the PDF and print it it looks perfect.
If the user is using Google Chrome only a section of the PDF prints at a large size. It looks like it thinks the PDF is an A3 so only prints the bottom left hand corner.
Things I have already tried - which all have the same issue.
Creating a brand new InDesign file and exporting reuploaded on the website
Saving it as a IDML file and exporting and reuploaded on the website
Had someone else export the file
Tried printing from google chrome outside the office
Checked no issues with the website backend
Checked with the IT company that services our systems.
Thanks in advance of your help.

    Hi jtrew,
It sounds as though the issue is specific to Chrome. Please see the following document from Google support: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/142056?hl=en
Let us know how it goes.

  • [CS4 WinXP] InDesign crashes on opening docs with missing links

    Hi,
I expect this issue is more to do with the PC than InDesign itself but I would be interested to know if anyone else has seen a similar problem (and been able to resolve it).
The design team in my office have just been given new HP Compaq PCs with CS4 (inc. InDesign 6.0.4). When these designers attempt to open certain InDesign documents, their InDesign will crash with no warnings or dialogues. The same documents can be opened on other (older) PCs without crashing.
The documents which crash all contain links to graphics on a network which is not available. The same document will open on older PCs but will obviously report missing links. The network is not available to the older PCs either. The older PCs are also running InDesign CS4 (6.0.4).
If the failing documents are opened on older PCs and the links removed, these can then be opened on the new PCs with no issues.
As I said, I expect this is a PC/Networking issue rather than InDesign itself but any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Simon Kemp

Try changing the preferences regarding checking links on open, and also using a workspace that doesn't include the links panel or preflight. That might be enough to get the files to open, and exporting to .idml or .inx and resaving might solve th problem (for that matter, it wouldn't hurt to export one from the older machine and see if that will open).

  • InDesign Server 5.5 Missing Links

I'm getting missing link errors in the log when InDesign Server opens files. The missing links reported are for xml files and snippets. Opening the document and looking in the links pallette shows no missing links. I tried using AppleScript to see if I could access these links but they are not there. I can find the links if I open the document in a text editor so I know they are actually there but I cannot seem to find a way to get rid of them. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.
Has any one else seen this problem?
Is there some way to "clean" the file? ( I already tried doing a save as on the files. )

I encounter the same problem with InDesign Server CS6: I get warning messages about missing snippets. This does not prevent to generate PDF's successfully (with madeToPrint server), but I would like to understand…
    Any idea?

  • Indesign document PDFs with Black outline around pages ... and ...

    Hi guys
I have posted this problem in the acrobat section but have thought it could be an indesign issue also.
Basically I am PDFing an InDesign CC document with crop and bleed for a printer.  For some reason, on some pages, it adds a black/grey outline to pages, and in some cases seems to crop the page so there is no bleed.
Any thoughts?  Original post with image can be seen here: PDF has strange black outline at printers end?
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply Rob.  This is not the case - I know this as other pages in the document have there bleed correct (5mm all around).  I have resolved the black outline issue, but now have this bleed issue.  On my screen the PDF looks fine but for some reason when the printer opens it, they do not get the bleed on the left edge!
    Thanks

  • Cannot print InDesign or PDF files

Upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and cannot print InDesign (CS3) or PDF files on Epson 800. Illustrator and Photoshop files print just fine (as does Word etc.).
Any ideas? All my drivers are upgraded.

    Hi Bob,
    Thank you for your response.
I upgraded both through the "Software Upgrade" and then through downloading the upgrade through the Apple support site. Things do not make sense. If it's a problem with CS3, then why doesn't Acrobat print (I upgraded long ago to 9.0)? And why does Illustrator and Photoshop work? Most mysterious. I'm a very serious user of both Mac and Adobe. Still have my SE and Illustrator 88. This is a first for me.
By clean install, do you mean wiping my hard drive? Would do just about anything to not have to do that.

  • "Save as PDF" - with working Links?

    Hi there,
I just realized that when I use the "Print -> Save as PDF" function, it does not save the links into the PDF. Thus, when opening the file into Preview the links within the document don't work anymore.
Any idea how this could be changed?
    Thanks for any advice!

How about choosing "Mail Contents of This Page" from the File menu for the alternative?
It enables the current page to save and email to yourself...

  • Can I create a pdf with clickable links which open new pdfs?

    Hi,
My client now wants me to create pdf with links to open new pdfs (in an offline mode). He wants to put all the content onto memory sticks to hand out at a conference.
I have suggested the alternative of links which redirect to other pages within the same pdf, but if I could create one which open whole new pages or documents this would be really smart.
    Many thanks,
    Sam

When you create the links, use "Go to a page view" type, as opposed to "Open a file". This allows you to create links that will open another PDF to a particular page and view (zoom and position).

  • Cannot access a PDF with a link in IE 9.

We have an application that shows a list of PDF Documents as links with in an aspx page.  When you click on a link it should open the PDF, and it does on XP pcs.  As of tuesday of this week the windows 7 pcs no longer function.   The Windows 7 machines are using IE 8  & 9, on these machines when you click on the link it does nothing, except highlighting it in blue.   Has anyone else expereinced this problem. It is acting like it disabled the click event for these links.
Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Yes, I was going to post a similar problem as yours.  Is this in a secured site?  I have a similar problem with adobe reader X(10.1), it cannot open pdf files within IE 9 when the site is secured, IE 9 just stays blank no matter how long I waited.  For non secured sites it works most of the time.  There is definitely a bug.
Ex. of secured site pdf reader doesn't work.

But if I access the document with the non secured link, it works.

  • How do I print to "Adobe PDF" with an encrypted pdf?

I've created a form in livecycle and I want the security to be set up as such:
    1) A password is required to edit the form in LiveCycle AND
    2) People can print the pdf to "Adobe PDF"
I've been able to create livecycle password access, but when I put a password on the LiveCycle Access (currently: Printing Allowed: High resolution, Changes Allowed: Filling in form fields and signing existing signature fields), I get this error when I try to print it to PDF:
    %%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
This PostScript file was created from an encrypted PDF file.
Redistilling encrypted PDF is not permitted.
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
How can I edit my form so I can do both.

It´s quite some time I was solving this.. but as I already wrote and I can somehow remember(as far I´m not working on this platform for 3 years): printing 150dpi is one thing - it´s printing like a simple pic. Printing in hi-res works in completely different way - pdf must be redistilled with pdf distiller or how it was called. Means, there must be additional step before printing the pdf form. Cant remember the details.

  • Problem with missing links.

    Hi,
I've created similar topic in InDesign Server Developer forum section (http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b70e8d). I post it here having hopes of possible solution in the range of scripting.
Company I work for is developing web application that processes InDesign documents (we use CS2 and CS3 servers).
We experience problem when users upload documents containing external links to some network paths and these network paths are inaccessible from our server. In this cases performance degrades drastically. For example document with 20 external links to network paths is opened by InDesignServer by 7 minutes, while the same document with external links to some local path is opened within 5 seconds.
I suggest that this degradation is caused by time InDesign Server is trying to access network path to check status of the link, as it can take a lot of time to assure that path is invalid.
Does anybody if I can do something via scripting to avoid that link lookup or make it shorted, and preserve that links in the same time?

    hi all,
    > Does anybody if I can do something via scripting to avo id that link lookup
    > or make it shorted, and preserve that links in the same time?
it's definitely a timeout problem. indesign tries to access these links.
i've the same problems with indesign desktop cs3 last occurrence with 5.0.3
    haven't tested with 5.0.4.
haven't found a solution yet, but would greatly appreciate one!
    regards,
    gregor
